Now that the federal government passed the First Step Act, governors and state lawmakers are considering their own prison reform. For decades the criminal justice system’s methodology have failed to protect us, end addictions, or "correct" criminal [behavioral] issues. 'MAXED OUT' is an eye-opening indictment against the criminal justice system. It vividly details the long-term effects crime [especially old felony convictions] have on offenders, their families, public safety, our communities and the economy—all of which are astounding. Once an offender has paid their debt to society, society then imposes a lifetime sentence that all but guarantee them to reoffend. Finding sustainable employment [that pays a living wage], housing that’s safe and affordable, and being given a fair chance to establish a purpose—making them productive members of society are all too often, unachievable.
In 2018, Sears filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and closed 250 locations, laying off 25,000 employees. If part of their restructuring plan was to open more locations and hire additional employees, their plans would be rejected. Well, the Department of Corrections is hemoraging money but expanding in size with the same failed model. If it weren't for being funded by your tax dollars, they would be out of business because as much as 83% of their products are being returned (recidivism). You cannot change the course of a failing system by increasing its size. 'MAXED OUT' highlights this sentiment in a way that everyone can clearly see the flaws in their methodology.
MAXED OUT' offers a series of stopgap solutions that if implemented, will permanently resolve this crisis—ultimately decimating the recidivism rate, reducing crime, fighting poverty, restoring families, making our communities safer and growing our economy. By the time you've read 'MAXED OUT', you’ll not only agree, you will become an advocate for what can only be described as a complete cultural transformation.
