( Format : audiobook ) "So, Jack, are you married?." Jack West is a partner in a small law firm,'East West Law's. Since the birth of his child several years before, his marital problems have been increasing. So when he is approached by a gorgeous woman named Amber, he finds himself returning with her to an hotel room - and his troubles really start there. Troubles far more life threatening than the possibility of his home life disruption.
This is a fast paced thriller based in and around London as Jack tries to survive whilst trying simultaneously to find out by whom, and why, his life is being threatened. It is a good, almost classical (think The Twenty Nine Steps) action mystery, told in shortish, sentences written in the present tense which give it both an urgency and a feel of news reported immediacy. Quite well presented, there are some descriptive passages spoilt by over repitition of key words, such as wall, vine, gaps etc. The narration by David Loving follows the text urgency with a brisk reading, again emphasising the near news-like quality of the story, maintaing the almost deadpan, unemotional writing despite the man protagonist's fears and confusions. His voicings of the characters is differentiated and clear. The combination of story and reading give this book a distinctively visual, film like quality, different from many action adventure stories.
I was fortunate in being gifted a complementary copy of Red Mist, at my request, by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you - I enjoyed it immensely. I did find it slightly strange that, given the book was set in England with the main protagonist himself living in the English countryside, the narrator was not English. Having said that, however, Mr.Loving's performance fitted well. The ending, too, was nicely done and not trite in the expected way. A nice mystery spy action thriller for anyone who enjoys books in this genre.
This is a story of espionage and spies. It has a picture of Big Ben on the cover, so I was expecting a British narrator or someone who sounded more worldly and sophisticated. That's why it was really distracting to have the book narrated by what sounded like an older, Southern gentleman from a deeply red state who should be out hunting. Being from Virginia myself, I do understand that gut assumption is probably totally wrong. The narrator did a perfectly decent job in that there were no mispronunciations and the pacing was decent. It was just such a disconnect. The fit is all wrong. It made getting into this book very difficult. It may also have made some of the writing and plot issues more apparent because I never felt immersed in this book.
I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.
At first the story had a nice fast start and pace, which is what I wanted to read, but after a few chapters there were characters spilling in from all sides with little to no background, leaving me a bit confused as to who was who. Unrealistic character interaction, very poor editing and proof reading have made this book a very frustrating and disappointing read. A very rushed and amateur book. For those of you wanting some very quick, very easy reading with no thinking involved, this is the book for you.
This book started with a promise, but in my opinion failed to deliver for a number of reasons. I thought the idea was a good one, and the story does have some of the elements of a thriller, including pace, but, in my opinion, is bogged down with typos, grammatical errors, excess verbiage, and problematic plot points. And the addition of erotic sex scenes does not help when those basic issues are still there. I gave the story 3 stars out of 5.
This is a reasonably well written story, like the ideas & characters but it needed better proof reading as names are swapped around & a few spelling issues! Shame really! Otherwise it would of been good!
Good story, well written except for off color language
I would have given this a 5 but stories, fiction and other should help maintain and advance proper language. Each author should find words better to fit sexual situations, rather than fuck, cock, dick, and pussy.
