A decent entry in the mystery category.

Not quite suspense, not quite crime fiction, not really detective. The mystery equivalent of a beach read, but not a cozy.

Entertaining and a great way to pass the time, but not something that will linger much once you close the book on the last page.

Bonus points for refreshingly not containing any forced-in "diversity".

Great for fans of serial fiction and light mystery.

Note that while this edition is from 2021, the book was originally published in 2018. So if you want more, there are already three sequels and a prequel available.

I've had this on my shelf forever and finally got around to it! Cassidy is searching for her stepbrother, Reeve who disappeared mysteriously and seems to have vanished. Determined to find him, she travels from location to location, meeting new people, surfing, and trying to figure out which people know something and which are hiding what they know. It's a fast-paced, tension-filled ride with plenty of twists and turns!

I actually forced myself to finish this book; it was mind-numbing, poorly written, and it had painfully long descriptions which stopped making any sense after a while. Nothing, I mean not even the slightest thing ever happened for more than half the book then everything was quickly wrapped in the final pages leaving me with a whole bunch of “what, who, but how?!”.... and don’t get me started on the main character (ugh!)

I have such mixed feelings about this book. Not the least of which is my puzzlement that I read a book named Rescuing Reeve, but Goodreads and Amazon apparently think the book is called Love in the Time of Surfing! I doubt I would have picked up a book with that title, and in reality the title doesn't make sense as it's a suspense book that doesn't really have that much to do with love (imo) but definitely has plenty to do with surfing.

I'll back up. The premise is that a woman vulcanologist who has recently lost her husband/fiance (it's unclear which for much of the book) is asked by her step-sister to locate her step-brother since she's already in Costa Rica (his last known location). Sounded interesting to me. We find out not too far into the story that Cassidy is also an amateur surfer, and there is a lot of surfing going on amidst the sleuthing. Though I'm not that interested in surfing, and I would have liked more about vulcanology, I did like the way the story had a slow build to the suspense and mystery, unlike many suspense novels that whack you over the head at every turn with impossible scenarios. I found it page-turning, but not exhausting. I also thought it appropriate and timely that there was a side story about child sexual trafficking. I don't enjoy hearing about it, but I do feel that it's an important topic and worth bringing attention to.

On the negative, I had a hard time being convinced of the sincerity of Cassidy's devotion to her dead fiance, Pete, because in nearly the first scene she has a casual liaison (non-graphic) with a member of her research team. Not long after she has another liaison (graphic) with someone else she barely knows. There are at least two other guys that she feels attracted to but doesn't act on. This is a huge detraction to the book for me. I also didn't get how she could be this casual about sex when she also is concerned and sickened by evidence of sex trafficking in her investigations.

There were a few technical plot errors. The most glaring one is that when the bartender character is first introduced, there is a long scene where he is not identified by name. A few scenes later, when Cassidy enters the bar, the narrative begins talking about "Mel". It takes me a while to realize that Mel is the bartender. But we haven't been given that name, nor has, apparently, Cassidy. I think this should be have been more explicit. In addition, there were many details left out in the culmination of the action that made the sequence of events confusing. I think these items could have been cleared up with a good substantive edit. Less seriously, there were a few grammar/punctuation issues, like "you're" confused for "your".

I'm not sure I'll continue with the series, mostly because I don't have a lot of respect for Cassidy and I'm not sure I want to follow her future exploits.

Blurb:
Author Amy Waeschle deftly explores an emotionally charged landscape of love, loss, and despair—and the risks one woman will take to save a fallen family member.

When volcano seismologist Dr. Cassidy Kincaid wraps up her field season on Costa Rica’s most active volcano, she heads to the beach for a rare treat: five days of surfing and relaxation. But a call from a family member forces a change in plans. Cassidy’s miscreant stepbrother, Reeve, has gone missing in the nearby town of Tamarindo.

The last thing Cassidy needs is a risky adventure, especially one involving Reeve. The last time she saw him, a police officer was shoving him into a patrol car. However, Cassidy discovers that Reeve had called her on the night he was last seen. Had it been a desperate cry for help?

Driven by guilt, Cassidy vows to find Reeve, and embarks on a journey that will lead her into the underbelly of the Latin American surfing world. A place of deceit and darkness, of oppression and terror. Though what she learns about Reeve will surprise her, the journey comes at a terrible price, threatening everything she’s come to trust about herself, love, and her fiancé’s recent death.

With surf scenes from Costa Rica and Nicaragua’s best waves, Love in the Time of Surfing delivers a gripping and heartbreaking story about the lengths we are willing to go to save our family, and how the choices we make have the power to either redeem or destroy us.

Cassidy is a professor studying volcanoes in S. America. Her step-sister calls her asking for help finding Reeve, Cass' step-brother who has gone missing down there. This leads Cass into dangerous waters as she negotiates drug dealers, corrupt police and people smugglers. This story, the first in a series, shows the mettle as well as the vulnerability of the heroine. As is usual with this author, the background is thorough and informative, and the story is thrilling.

This Kindle was a gift from a Mystery website. I'm not entirely certain how to describe this story. Cassie is trying to get over her fiance's death, and is sleeping with two different men to dull the pain. She is a surfer and does an inordinate amount of it, which frankly did not do a thing for me. She can't seem to find her missing brother Reeve but when she finally does (which seems to take forever) the book gets to the finale and then goes on afterwards and still manages to leave the reader shaking her head and saying "What?"

This is one of those books that gave me a pause as to what rating to give it. For some reason, I had a hard time getting lost in the story and connecting with the characters. It seemed like Cassidy was very trusting of others while in a foreign country, especially when she was trying to find out what had happened to her brother and she put herself in some very dangerous situations without knowing who she should trust.

Good mystery, some flaws in main character but sometimes you like them more if they have them. Okay reading however for some reason I couldn’t connect with the heroine ... reading other reviews I find this unusual — ya pays your money and ya takes yer chances. Pick some reviewer you trust to find whether you’ll like this novel.

The first of the Cassidy Kincade series, Rescuing Reeve is an exciting look into the life and times - 2018 - of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We see Cassidy's life as a vulcanologist setting up a study on the Costa Rican volcano Arenal with plans to monitor the underground action at Arenal from her home in Southern California and write several papers, both alone and collaborating with others. And everything is going well - at work. Her personal life is still on hold a little over a year after the death of her fiance Pete and she doesn't see the end of the tunnel of grief even yet. She will take a few days surfing the extraordinary waves in the Central American Pacific before flying back home.

But then her stepsister Rebecca gets Cass involved in efforts to find - and most likely rescue - her stepbrother Reeve, who has gone missing in either Costa Rica or Nicaragua several weeks ago. Cass fears he has had another dip into his well-documented addiction to booze and/or drugs but he IS family, and Rebecca has small children and can't come down and search him out.

Tracing Reeve's last known activities, the search has unexpected benefits. Reeve was working on a surf boat as the cook and general helper, a fairly large ocean-going vessel that carries surfers from spot to spot with famous waves along the Pacific coast, when he disappeared in San Juan, Nicaragua. Cass takes the same ship and meets several women, avid surfers all, also from the West Coast of the U.S., and is able to enjoy some of the famous surfing in both Costa Rica and Nicaragua with them as they travel north. With the help of the ship's captain, she is able to follow the trail of her stepbrother through the streets of San Juan. But this is not the boy she knew. This Reeve is a man of character and compassion. And where is he NOW?

NO SPOILERS

This was my first read of a book by Amy Waeschle. Count me as hooked. The story was well crafted with different plot threads intertwined, an interesting if troubled protagonist, excellent supporting characters, and enough curve balls to keep the reader guessing. Cassidy Kincaid is doing research for her PhD as a Seismologist and as she is getting ready to depart to go back to her university, she is contacted by her stepsister. Though they are not close Cassidy is pressured into trying to find her stepbrother who has dropped off the radar. Against her better judgment, she agrees to see what, if anything, she can determine. Her location and other priorities are made more challenging as her stepbrother has a history of drug use and irresponsibility. (Drug use in Central America. What could possibly go wrong?)

Having lived elsewhere in the tropics, I found her descriptions of the weather, surroundings, and things in general to be spot on. Her details about dealing with the local authorities is also the problematic mess that I found to be true where I was.

I'm not a surfer, but Cassidy is and the level of detail provided by the author sounds like she is a surfer herself. Fun if you are as well. Informative if not.

Bottom line for me is that it was a great read, hard to put down and the sort of book I'd have preferred to be able to read in one sitting. This was my first book by Amy Waeschle but it absolutely will not be my last. Looking forward to her next book.

Rescuing Reeve
(Cassidy Kincaid Book 2)
by Amy Waeschle

Rescuing Reeve is the second book of the Cassidy Kincaid series, a well written story of a horrible topic, which runs rapid in todays society. A captivating storyline with a plot that has many twists and turns, filled with action, drama, and suspense. Rescuing Reeve has explanatory writing which will draw the reader emotionally into each scene, and has a different end than anticipated, leading into the next book in the series. I am sure that many readers will love it, but it is not suitable for all age groups.

Ms. Amy is a talented author, and this book shows that a great bit of research has been done before writing this story, (which I really enjoy reading about the locations), describing the world in her story perfectly. Her characters are exceptional and well developed, with believable characteristics and distinct personalities; readers will find the lead female character's emotional state is easily understood.

Not an easy book to read but it is a great read, slow getting started; but I could not put it down. This was my first read of a book by Ms. Amy Waeschle and I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I am interested in other works by this author. Thank you, Ms. Amy, and to the free Savage Creek Press for sharing this series. These are my own thoughts and feeling about this book and the author, giving both a 5-star rating

Always answer the phone.

Dr. Cassidy Kincaid is studying volcano in Costa Rica when she gets a call from her brother, Quinn, and her stepsister, Rebecca, that her stepbrother, Reeve, is missing in Tamarindo. He is not returning their calls.

Cassidy is not worried about Reeve. He is a mess. Reeve has lied, threatened, and stolen from her in the past. She cares for him: he is her stepbrother. However, you do not have to like your relatives. Cassidy thinks he is on another drug bender.

Unfortunately, her siblings keep calling her until she gives in to them. It will be a wild goose chase; however, Cassidy will hunt for Reese. What will Cassidy do to find her brother, who has been missing for two weeks? Reese’s last know association is on a boat transporting surfers from one wave area to another along the coast.

Read this slow-moving tale of how Cassidy searches for her brother in a foreign land. There is danger, mystery, drugs, human trafficking, attempted murder, drinking, partying, surfing, a little sex.

What’s not to like in this scientist turned sleuth tale? What will happen when Cassidy runs into criminal elements? Too bad, someone wants her dead! Who will help her?

A good mystery story.

Things I liked about the book:
1) It is realistic fiction.
2) It brings to light some of the practices of the heinous crime of human trafficking of which I was not aware.
3) After I finished reading the book, I find myself reflecting on the actions of a dysfunctional blended family. It gives me pause to reevaluate how I sometimes judge others without the benefit of knowing the full story of current events in their lives that influence their decisions.
4) It is part of a series.
5) It is a part of the Kindle Unlimited Library.

Things I did not like about the book (why I subtracted a star):
1) It is not a clean read.
a. Profanity – Use of GD and F Bombs dropped.
b. Sexual situations – I prefer “behind closed door” scenes.

This is an amazing story by an excellent author. I’m impressed by the magnitude of this story. It covers everything from sadness to death to love exemplified. Cassidy has lost the love of her life. She has immersed herself in her work. She received a phone call from her stepsister. They have been unable to locate the stepbrother. Cassidy decides to spend some time doing R and R. She feels an obligation to help locate her stepbrother. She begins to relax and surf
What more relaxation could she ask for. The story continues with more strong characters and more exciting adventures. Does she find her stepbrother?? You must read this story in order to get the feel for it.

After a slow start, the story turned out excellent. Kept me reading deep into the night with lots of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed, the descriptions of the surfing made me want to try it again. I did not expect the surprise at the end and it made the book even better. The description of Cassidy’s grief makes you almost feel it until the jumps into bed with whoever comes along. I skipped the explicit bits and would have liked the book much more without it. Her grief could maybe explain the risks she takes while looking for her stepbrother.

One life at a time.

Cassidy thinks she is looking for her step brother who probably got himself involved in drugs again. But just maybe she is wrong and he is saving a life. Getting caught up in finding what happened to Reeve might cost Case her own life. Human trafficking is prolific in the US and central America. One person can do something to save one life just by spreading the word of warning to young girls.

The search is on for her step brother. Cassidy takes a break from her job to hunt for her missing brother. On the clues she finds along the way she meets a myriad of people both good and bad. But who is who? As she searches she meets with danger, escapes death a couple of times and yet finds the will and time to do a little surfing. All while mourning the death of her fiancé. Filled with mystery, action and a little romance; Rescuing Reeve is a definite read to put in your ereaders.

This book has a great storyline. Human trafficking is so prominent today that it’s scary. This book is so realistic that you can see things that happened in the book, happening in real life today – all over the world. I was so into this book that it was hard to put down until the profanity and explicit sex started. That is really a big turn off for me. However, the storyline kept me in the book but cringing every time I saw the gutter language.

This book really is an excellent read. Loved the geology and engineering which the books starts off with. The author draws us into Cassidy's life. We feel like we are there as she travels the work and adventure through Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Loved the surfing trips and the search for her step-brother. We really are part of the 'learning who he really was'.

The reader is there as a silent but well informed observer all the way through the book. It was a very enjoyable read.

She is an expert in volcanos

When her half-sister phones to tell her her half-brother seemed to be missing and she needed to find him.
It seemed impossible, but slowly she worked through the sketchy evidence.
I found this story to be very interesting and thoughfully researched. Read it. I think you will like it too.

Cassidy tries to find her missing step brother

Cassidy leaves Oregon to work on equipment to record volcanoes in Costa Rica. When she gets a call telling her the Reeve, her step brother is missing her trip turns into an adventure where Cassidy barely survives. I liked the storyline and a little surprised at the ending. Worth the time spent reading.

I've read a book titled Rescuing Reeve but now find it titled Love in the Time of Surfing. This title doesn't do the book any favours, I would never have chosen a book with that title as I'm not a fan ot romances, and would have missed out on a good read. Looking forward to other books by this author

This is awesome series. I really am enjoying it!

Wow! What an incredible story. So much is revealed about Reece, Mel, Pete Bruce and Cassidy is amazing! Thank you for acknowledging the fact that it is incredibly hard to get over the death of a husband, fiance or whatever the relationship and the how alone you feel even with others around.

Excellent story!

I appreciate how the main character is not a cardboard cut-out of some impossibly perfect person. She has flaws & imperfections. Like many (who have dealt with addicts), she gets tired of dealing with her addicted stepbrother. I never thought I would want to know what it felt like to surf. Now, I'm glad that I have some idea of what it's like

Well researched, well written

Step-by-step we are taken through Cassidy's search for her brother. I never knew as much about surfing as I learned here. The characters are well detailed and come alive. I didn't expect the ending...well done.
