जब ‘कृष्णकली’ लिख रही थी तब लेखनी को विशेष परिश्रम नहीं करना पड़ा, सब कुछ स्वयं ही सहज बनता चला गया था। जहाँ कलम हाथ में लेती, उस विस्तृत मोहक व्यक्तित्व को, स्मृति बड़े अधिकारपूर्ण लाड़-दुलार से खींच, सम्मुख लाकर खड़ा कर देती, जिसके विचित्र जीवन के रॉ-मैटीरियल से मैंने वह भव्य प्रतिमा गढ़ी थी। ओरछा की मुनीरजान के ही ठसकेदार व्यक्तित्व को सामान्य उलट-पुलटकर मैंने पन्ना की काया गढ़ी थी। जब लिख रही थी तो बार-बार उनके मांसल मधुर कंठ की गूँज कानों में गूँज उठती। वही विस्तृत मधुर गूँज, उनके नवीन व्यक्तित्व के साथ, ‘कृष्णकली’ में उतर आई। —शिवानी.

(1923– 2003) was one of the popular Hindi magazine story writers of the 20th century and a pioneer in writing Indian women based fiction. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to Hindi literature in 1982. Almost all of her works are in print today and widely available across India.

She garnered a massive following in the pre-television 60s and 70s, as her literary works were serialised in Hindi magazines like Dharmayug and Saptahik Hindustan, and in TV serials n films.

Upon her death in 2003, Government of India described her contributions to Hindi literature as, “…in the death of Shivani the Hindi literature world has lost a popular and eminent novelist and the void is difficult to fill”

भैरवी और चौदह फेरे के बाद कृष्णकली शिवानी जी की तीसरी रचना है जो मैंने पढ़ी है l ये उपन्यास भी पहले दो की तरह एक स्त्री की कहानी है जो लेखक ने बहुत ही सुंदर और मार्मिक ढंग से चित्रित किया है l
कृष्णकली एक गरीब कुष्ठ माता पिता के अवैध संबंध का निर्माण, जिसे जन्म लेते ही माँ ने मार देने की कोशिश की l नन्ही कली को आश्रम की डॉक्टर एक वैश्या के हाथ सौंप देती है I यहाँ से शुरू होती है कली कि कहानी I
कली को एक बेहतर जीवन देने के लिए उसकी माँ घर-परिवार छोडकर एक नई शुरुआत करती है l पर कली एक आंधी की तरह अपने जीवन को जीने की ललक में एक नए रास्ते पर निकल पडति है l कली का चित्रण इतना मोहक है, उसकी अनुभूतियां इतनी अनूठी कि जब वह अपनी आँखें हमेशा के लिए बन्द कर लेती है तो भी कहीं एक उम्मीद होती है कि शायद यह उसका अंत ना हो I

This is one of the best Hindi novels, which will remain in my memory for long long time to come... It's really difficult to stop feeling oneness with the story of the novel and at times getting into depths of emotional ups and downs as things unfold for the main character of the novel. The story would touch anyone who has felt the middle class Indian life, particularly north, and has sensitivity for human emotions, especially those, which remain unexpressed...

A beautiful story about a beautiful girl. I lov shivani style of writing... Her protaginst have lovely name. The location is genrally the kumao garwal area where writer belonged. Her knowledge of the culture is evident in her books and so is her love for that.

भुलाया जा सकता है ? लेखक ने कृष्णकली की सुंदरता का इतना बखान किया की उसके सामने उसके किये सारे कृत्य फीके पड़ गये!क्या रेलगाड़ी में किसी के जेवर चुरा के जाना, फिर उसपे जूठा आरोप लगाने की धमकी देकर डराना,किसी पर स्वयं को थोपना क्यों की मेरी सुंदरता से बच कैसे सकता है ?
जिन्होंने पाला उन्हें छोड़ कर चले जाना?
सम्भवत: सबको यह पुस्तक पसंद आई है परंतु मेरे लिये इतनी रुचिकर नहीं थी |

I have been an avid Shivani reader, Krishnakali along with Atithi have been my best reads. who can write about feminine feelings better than Shivani. A must read.

This is the third book I've read by the author Shivani and the one I was most looking forward to as it had been recommended by a friend's mother after she heard that I have been exploring this author. It seems to be one of her most celebrated works and I can completely understand why. In comparison to the other books of hers I've read, this is superior both in terms of writing and characters. I grew attached to both Panna and Kali very quickly and got engrossed in reading the twists and turns of their lives. Kali has to be one of the most interesting characters I've come across in the literature from that time period. The unexpected turn the ending took was a bit heartbreaking, but I do not want to share any spoilers here. To anyone looking to explore Hindi literature, I would highly recommend this.

This is one of my favourite of shivani's novels. Read it so many times n still can read it any day. The story flows n creates one world of its own n you feel part of everything happening. Characterisation of Krishnakali is very loveable n believable.
