Rate this book
A Historical Regency Romance Novel

A tale of loss, deception and the true strength of the heart.

Lady Margaret Baxter lost her husband, the Duke of Lowe. He was found dead at the hands of his mistress and now Margaret wants to bury her head in the sand. She decides to escape with her six-year-old son Ezra, away from the scandal. The country residence in Comptonshire seems the only choice.

Lord Nathaniel Sterling recently returned from the Navy to take over his position as an Earl since his older brother died, a position he despises as much as the peerage in general. He was heartbroken once and he has no intention to marry soon. His only goal is to build a school for the poor, until he saved a little boy from an accident and sought help from a stranger, Lady Margaret Baxter, and he immediately fell in love with her.

But he is an Earl and she is a Duchess, and most importantly, she is a widow in mourning. Both of them cannot resist their burning desire to connect. As much as they want to keep distance in order to avoid scandal again, she is drawn to him like a moth to a flame.

As they navigate these obstacles and more, among friends and foes, another force comes into play and threatens to tear them apart forever. As they try to overcome their past heartbreaks and their fear of love, they are left with one question: Will rank, reputation and deception win out? Or can love truly conquer all?

I have grown up and now live in Concord, New Hampshire.
I have studied and worked as a librarian and my meticulous research in History inspired an everlasting love for Historical Romance.
I discovered Bronte Sisters at my early teens and I have been fond of heroines like Jane Eyre, ever since.
I finally got the guts to participate on a writing contest on 2017. From right then I decided that plotting romances with rakish men and smart, feisty women, was an excitement I couldn’t stay away from. Except the times I am chasing down my two young boys.
Other than writing, I delight in watching theatrical plays, reading mystery novels and my latest discovery is cake decoration, something that I owe to my sons and my weakness for sweets.

I found the overall story of the hard-fought emotional romance between Lady Margaret Duchess of Lowe and Lord Nathaniel Sterling Earl of Comptonshire, lovely. Their ups and downs and even someone from the past trying to break their happiness apart. At six years old, Margaret's son Ezra's grief over his father's death was immense. He became withdrawn angry and wanted no comfort. Because of Ezra's grief and him trying to feel better he embarked on trip back to London by himself. When his cart overturned and he was stuck under the horse practically drowning in the mud, Nathaniel saved him. Nathaniel gave Ezra a reason to smile again. Somehow Ezra needed a friend and an adult male figure in his life. Ezra's emotional state unfortunately blew like the wind in whichever way Margaret and Nathaniel's relationship went. And let me tell you it fluctuated horribly back and forth. But no one was more affected by this than Ezra. I wished I would have enjoyed this more. I found the story so drawn out it became somewhat boring. Like I said the overall storyline is excellent, the characters personalities are wonderful and Ezra's character is especially realistic. But the telling of the story took too long. I wished the extended epilogue did not only focus on Ezra but I wish it would have jumped a few years into the future to see how Ezra was doing and how married life between Margaret and Nathaniel would have been. This story has potential it just needs to be tightened up and more life breathed into it. There was one loose end. Who trashed the schoolhouse flowerbed and vegetable garden?

This is a story of a complicated relationship made even more so by family members.
It opens with a funeral so there is a bit of sadness running through the story.
Our couple are called Lord Nathaniel Sterling, the Earl of Comptonshire and Lady Margaret Baxter, the Duchess of Lowe.
I love the characters and the interactions with each other.
Loved the plot with it's twists and turns.
Will this couple find their way through all the hardships, deceits, lies to their happily ever after?
Read this lovely heart warming romantic tale which I found very hard to put down.

A scintillating romance story!

Lord Nathaniel Sterling was unprepared for his brother’s death or assuming his brother's role as the Earl of Comptonshire. He had little in common with the nobility, finding them trite and petty. Now he found himself in the position where he must not only interact with them but must take a wife from their vapid ranks and produce an heir. He chose instead to hide at his country estate while he considered his options.

Lady Margaret, Duchess of Lowe, fled London with her 6-year-old son Ezra to escape the scandal created by her husband's death in the arms of his mistress rather than expose as Ezra to any more cruel gossip from the ton. However, Ezra misses their home in London and while trying to return by himself, his cart overturns and Lord Nathaniel rescues him from certain death. When he returns home after delivering the boy safely to his mother his interest is piqued by her presence and beauty. He finds himself looking for reasons to see her again.

Ezra finds a father figure in Lord Nathaniel and the Earl is drawn to the small boy mourning the loss of his father. While Lady Margaret is grateful for the Earl’s actions, she hesitates to place Ezra or herself in a position where another nobleman could harm them emotionally even though she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the handsome Earl.

I liked that the author made Lady Margaret intelligent, strong, and determined to protect her son and that Lord Nathaniel recognized and admired her intelligence and character. The plot had romance, drama, and a happy ending; a great recipe for an enjoyable afternoon reading. I received a free copy but my review is entirely honest and voluntary.

This is a wonderful enjoyable page-turning love story, and will show the reader the tribulations the regency high society can put a person through, regardless of title. Cruel indeed they are meddling, and wagging their tongues for any bit of gossip to talk about. Tarnishing reputations especially to a woman. Lady Margaret Abigail Baxter, Duchess of Lowe is the victim in this scandal. Moving was difficult, but necessary it was for the best herself, and her son,Ezra only six years old. Lady Margaret's husband died just recently. Fate had other plans for them when they finally arrived in Comptonshire. Little Ezra missed his father so much he went for a ride with horse, and cart but got into an accident and injured himself badly. Nathaniel Sterling, Earl of Comptonshire found Ezra, and brought him back to Lady Margaret. Nathaniel happen to stop, and visit he was concerned about Ezra's health. They both are very fond of each other, and this begins their friendship. Ezra needs company to help his healing. Nathaniel grew closer to Ezra, and in turn Margaret's feelings changed as well. A deceitful woman is trying to keep Lady Margaret and Nathaniel apart. Writing a letter with false accusations and lies. These two captivating characters's love for each other brings them together in the end. Nathaniel finally asked Margaret for her hand in marriage. Definitely A Must Read.

The sins of the Duke.

We start the story at a funeral for the Duke of Lowe, after being found dead
in the bed of his mistress. Lady Margaret, the Duchess of Lowe decides
to take her son Ezra and abandon London in the wake of scandal following
the Dukes death. Fleeing to Comptonshire where through an unfortunate
accident involving Ezra she meets Lord Nathaniel Sterling, the Earl of Comptonshire.
I always like a story where the H/h are marrying above or below station. And this one was sweet with just the right amount angst. The source of the conflict was
not that big of a surprise to me. It was however the source of my only eye roll in the book. It happened near the end. After all that Lady Margaret had dealt with
and once the villainess and all her lies exposed. One would think it be happy ever after time.
But no evidently Margaret lost her mind and believed only part of Tessa’s tales to be false.
My only wish would be to know who wrecked the flower bed and why?
Lucinda Nelson is one of my new favorite authors and I await
her next book. Maybe Clark or William’s story.

An ok read.

I found the relationship between Nathaniel and Margaret was very slow to progress. There was much reference to the scandal Margaret was enduring because of the circumstances surrounding her husbands death. However, the details of WHY it was a scandal and the implications for Margaret and her son was kept hidden. The nature of living in this time period and the “expected” behaviours of titled men and women clearly directed the types and frequency of proper interactions. As a result, I felt conversations were stilted and somewhat superficial with very little meaningful dialogue between Margaret and Nathaniel. The conflict generated by rumours and letters really added to the story. In a way, I was surprised that the pieces of the story came together in the end as they did. I just wish the ending was not so abrupt. Yes, the main issues were resolved, but then what?

I received a free ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed reading the book. The story was good, the characters are well-described, engaging and likeable. Although for me, the entire story moved along much to slowly. I was happy to see that the Duchess of Lowe found her happily ever after for her and her son Ezra. I always love an extended epilogue, but in this case, in order to read the extended epilogue you have to click on a link at the end of the book. The link brings you to a page where you are required to resubmit your name and email address again, then it says the extended epilogue will be sent to you. I finished reading this book almost a week ago and still haven't received the extended epilogue. This seems an unnecessary and annoying requirement, especially since the author includes the first three chapters of her next book, as a preview, at the end of this one.

This is the story of Duchess Margaret and Earl Nathanial. Margaret’s husband, the Duke, dies in the bed of his mistress. It seemed he preferred his mistresses company over there out of his wife and young son. The shame I’ve been found in his mistresses bed caused gossip in London.
To protect her young son from the gossip Margaret takes him to their country estate and there she meets Nathaniel, the Earl. It seems Margaret’s young son, Ezra, was in an accident and broke his leg. The Earl found him and returned him to their estate. Nathaniel was taken with Margaret and Margaret was taken with Nathaniel. That’s begin a period of getting to know one another. Since Margaret was still in morning they had to be careful to not get tongues wagging.
This was an easy read and there is a happily ever after but not before the lovers are tested.
Lucinda Nelson has written a lovely story.

Again a wonderful book to read from Lucinda Nelson. A wonderful story with a slow structure that will keep you listening to this book.
The story of a widow who has a scandal behind her due to the behavior of her deceased husband. To leave the gossip behind her, she decides to leave London with her son. Then she meets a man who takes her son out of his shell and is a true friend to her. When her feelings for him deepens, there are people around her who work against her. Real love always finds a way and a happy ever after is a bumpy one, but it will eventually come.

Nice to read how the main characters in this story deal with their past and their experiences and how they learn to love again. A wonderful story.
I enjoyed this story and I am sure that future readers will feel the same way!

Unintended consequences.

When two people have lived and lost, trust is hard to find.
Lord Nathaniel Sterling had loved when younger but was not in line to be lord as he was a second son and so his love, Tessa, turned to another.
Lady Margaret Baxter had married a Duke who made a mockery of their marriage and died in the bed of his mistress.
The two meet when Nathaniel rescues her son.
Ezra, the son, immediately takes a liking to him and ails unless Nathaniel is seeing him.
The two adults find time together to be tempting.
Lady Baxter’s cousin happens to be Tessa and she is up to no good and wishes to make trouble between Nathaniel and Margaret.
Tessa gets a comeuppance and finally, Margaret and Natahniel see their way to HEA.

Margaret and Nathaniel's story is one of loss, pain, broken hearts...friendship and love. They meet when Nathaniel saves Margaret's son, their friendship grows as Nathaniel spends time with the boy, and ultimately Margaret. They have both suffered broken hearts and find it hard to trust. She is a Duchess, he is an Earl. Society is cruel to each of them, it would be more cruel if they were together. Being together is unacceptable and unlikely. However, their hearts do not follow the rules of society.

This story is full of ups and downs. The characters are well-developed and lovable. I truly enjoyed this story and look forward to the next. Perhaps Clark or William's story?

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book. This is the second book I have read by this author. Once again the author has given us a beautifully written and heartfelt historical romance. Completely true to the customs and manners of the era and dripping in authenticity, this story is a stunningly powerful romance between two broken people and their journey to healing each other. The characters are engaging and likeable, the drama is full of highs and lows and everything in between, including betrayal and heartbreak, and the romance is heartwarmingly sweet and satisfying. This novel satisfies on all levels! Wonderful read.

It reminded me of my Mother-in-law thinking I was not good enough for her son.

When I was reading this book, I thought how could class rank make this much difference between a Duchess and a Earl. I felt sorry for Nathaniel and all the grief it brought to the relationship. And I felt sorry for Margaret to have to be strong for her son over something she had no part in. Reading how each one dealt with the situation made for interesting reading . I felt happy, sad, proud of the Duchess , and betrayed all in one book. Read it for ideas of how to handle situations in your life.

I enjoyed Margaret and Nathaniel's story. Margaret was a widow crushed by her husband's infidelity, made worse by the gossip that surrounded the funeral. Her escape led her to Nathaniel who also had a tough time with love. Together they discovered that second chances are possible and even better than the first failed romance. I enjoyed their story, but the book did drag ever so slightly in the middle, but picked up quickly and moved along at a good pace. Overall, really good, heart-warming story.

I loved every bit of this ebook. I so enjoyed reading it and couldn't put it down until the end. And want to read it again. That little boy was way beyond his years in intelligence. He was determined to get back to the city and had an accident. That is where the earl met him. He took a liking to the earl and he came everyday which helped not only the boy but his mother. She is of a higher class than him so it is somewhat tricky. I highly recommend this. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.

I enjoyed this story of loss, deception, friendship, and love. Can two broken-hearted people find love together? What if society would not approve due to differences in social status?

Lucinda Nelson always writes wonderful historical romances and this is no exception. Excellent characters and descriptions tie you to the story in such a way that you cannot leave until the book is finished. You feel for the characters and can only hope that they can find their way to each other.

I truly loved this story. Margaret is devastated not only at the loss of her husband but by how he was found. She moves away from London to escape the gossip with her son. She just wants time to heal and put the passed behind her. Nathaniel has loved only to find out the woman he loves turns away form him because he is a second son. So you have two people dealing with heart breaks and finding it hard to trust. This story made it hard to put down. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Mud at First Sight

I loved the story of Margaret and Nathaniel. From the moment they met to the end, was a wonderful time. It is always nice to see someone, not related, love the kids as much as the parent. The attraction keeps pulling them together, but they're troubled past, and certain people keep them from completely getting together.

I think there was quite a bit of extra verbage that could have been done away with.

3* for the storyline. Didn't like the constant headers he said, she said. So many factual errors I can't list them all, and the spelling is appalling. "He tied the horse's reigns to his belt" not only the wrong word, but a stupid notion too. Two thirds is the way through a baron appears, referred to as the Baron, but no idea who he is or what part he plays.
Could have been good, sadly not.
So many loose ends, what happens to Tessa, was the fire an accident or arson?

It is the heartbreaking story of Lord Nathaniel Sterling, the Earl of Comptonshire and Lady Margaret Baxter, the Duchess of Lowe. How mistaken events kept them from each other.

Will they be able to admit their feelings and take the next step on love? A bitter sweet story as they search for love.

A True Second Chance Romance

This story opens with a funeral and throughout is much sadness. Many trying times assail the duchess. Her burdens are eased slowly over time when an Earl saves her son’s life. This is a story of a complicated relationship made even more so by family members. This book was extremely difficult to put away.

Can a Earl and a Duchess find happiness together. The story of Nathaniel and Margaret is a tale of loss, despair, heartache, love, misunderstandings so many things working against the couple. I found the story well written, although at times it seemed to drag some for me. For those that enjoy historical regency romance novels this is a good read.

Margaret,s husband was found dead in his mistresses bed, because of the scandal and gossip she took her young son to the country
And met Nathaniel who had broken his leg. They liked each other, but had to tread carefully because of rumors since Margaret is still in mourning for her unfaithful husband. I loved this great characters and good plot. Hard to put down, a real page turner.

Pleasant, leisurely, lush historical romance. There are several coincidences, and one misunderstanding took far too long for the characters to resolve. I would have appreciated more about the challenges of the heroine, newly widowed, in managing her estate, and the stakes are relatively low. Keen to read the next one - preview shows the stakes are higher.

Enjoyed this book! Her husband died under bad circumstances and she took her son and went to her country house to get away from the gossip. A neighbor helped her son and brought him home. They were attracted to each other and fought it. I recommend this book to everyone who likes romance.
