Magical Fantasy. Romance. Deception.

All of my expectations shattered the day my sister fell, and my magic changed.

Zivrune, the magi prince I’d loved since childhood, didn’t become king. My sister didn’t heal the land. The two of them didn’t become bondmates.

For years I waited in hiding, hoping for the promised rebellion. Instead, the cruel king’s guards arrive and leave a trail of bodies in their search for someone.

I know who they want. I just don’t understand why. To find answers, I’m forced to return to Yandari and face my past. But I’m not the same girl anymore.

Because now, I know family doesn’t mean fidelity, devotion definitely requires sacrifice, and love? For Zivrune, I’ll defy the law, regardless of nature or magic.

This coming of age fantasy is told in parallel timelines, building up to a shocking reveal that will leave you reeling and breathless. With action, drama, and unexpected turns galore, BETRAYED is young adult fantasy that is dark, twisted, and beautiful.

**BETRAYED is the first book in the Magi Rising series and includes the previously released prequel, Fallen, plus an additional 30k words for a novel filled with unique magical powers, romantic suspense, and a surprising twist on teen shifter books. Due to thematic elements, BETRAYED is intended for mature young adults and up.**

RAYE WAGNER is the USA Today Bestselling author of young adult fantasy books, but she hates writing bios. She’d much rather tell you a story. She’s partial to fantasy, with dragons or magic or something so she can lie and not feel guilty. She also has an obsession with sweets (all the bakery goodies), nerf wars, wigs, and occasionally tutus.

When she isn’t writing, shenanigating (I’m sure that’s a word), or lying, Raye is with her family . . . preferably at the beach.

"How can I help… When I don’t know what the fetid rot is going on?”

Me too girl, me too.

Also this cover ^^^ made me want to read the novel!

I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the story- the world building was interesting, and the magic system was unique...but in the end... I am confusion.

spoiler questions:

I think I get the overall story the more I think about it, but the time jumps back and forth-and no one seeming to answer any dang questions made this read a little frustrating at times. Additionally, the lack of clarification for some of the character's motivations left me asking 'why' on a lot of plot points.

But hey, its on kindle unlimited right now- so if your looking for a unique read I would recommend!

Raye Wagner truly has a way with words. The Darkest Drae was my first book by her and I loved it. Don’t judge a book by its cover truly has meaning because I did and figured I’d be reading something mediocre. Sometimes I’m glad to be wrong.

First of all, I AM OBSESSED WITH PANTHERS!! The construction of this fantasy world was something to behold. Why have titles such as ‘kings’ and ‘queens’ when we can make up our own names? The significance of naming in this book was obvious and I absolutely loved it. I loved the creativity Wagner conducted.

Another favorite of mine is how the story flowed. Went from 3 years ago to present day and in some moments it could be confusing but how each chapter closed off just left me with questions and expectations I didn’t end up forgetting simply because of the time jump.

Now for the characters. Disa is a badass. I love her attitude and that moment she caves every time she thinks or sees Rune. She’s a soul-seeing girl that only has love in her heart for her older sister. Her powers blossomed in a way I wasn’t entirely expecting. I guess I thought she’d control the dead but this is just as good, there are so many ways to formulate necromancy powers in fantasy books and I can’t wait to see how Zadisa transforms in the coming books.

Now time for Ziyana. The first chapter pretty much set the tone for how this would go. Ziyana is a narcissistic, self centered, power hungry woman. Who thinks that teasing her sister and reminding her of her ‘lesser’ beauty will somehow make her beautiful as if that were even necessary. My heart really tore for Disa because it didn’t seem she craved beauty, just her sisters adoration. Truly at the end of this book I half expected Disa to release her sisters soul for more than one obvious reason (Zeron).

Zivrune. Very creative name, I loved it immediately (a sucker for ‘Z’ names). A boy with the mind of power who literally sucks at controlling his own. Like it’s so obvious you like Disa but you don’t even wanna reach forward, you reach alllllll the way back and assume she doesn’t even like you, the same way you don’t think anyone likes you. Wanted to tackle him. The ending and his....joining, WAS AMAZING

Zeron. What a mess. Somehow I expected to figure out more about him. About his thoughts. I feel as if I were viewing him through 3 thick glass walls, it was hard to pinpoint the gravity of his character. Like yes he’s a control freak, he wants power, he’s manipulative and is sadistic. But what else. I hope the second book (if homeboy even survives) touches on his mental and emotional side. As to why he is doing this.

Bicav. A wonderful, pure !! mind reading side character who has my entire heart. BUTTERCUP. Nuff said.

The description of powers and magic was splendid. Ok and the joining was great to read. It was intimate, sensual, and tense. And that hot spring scene!!! More of it (because that not so nice bite on the neck). More of this between these two I need it to survive!

The setting of this world was very different. In contrast to the common forest of pine trees, this was a jungle. Which is ironic since I recently saw a writing post about broadening the locations of fantasy worlds. Not every forest needs to be cold with erect trees.

P.S: What happened with Mar? Is he dead with the others? He was completely forgotten.

I am soooooo confused! I read Stolen and loved it. Betrayed is also a great read but it's being listed as book 1. I started freaking out because I thought I skipped a book. So when Illusions was released I decided to read this book first, to make sure I didnt miss anything. It worked out and I love the back story. If you are new to this series be sure you read this book first! I dont know how I got mixed up but I'm very happy with Betrayed. It's an excellent addition to this series.

This book was intense! It was written with so much emotion and anxiety. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the uniqueness of the storyline. It was full of twists and turns. I can’t wait to read more of this series!

A lot people feel Betrayed (ha get it) that this book became book one after everyone already loved Stolen and had read it as book one, but I will say: I loved it. If you've already read Stolen, don't feel dismayed: this book will only enhance your experience leading into Illusions, which just came out.

Betrayed Magi Rising book 1 is the first book that I have read by Raye Wagner and while I did enjoy this book it took me a minute to get into it. As I was reading this book I honestly felt like I had stepped into the middle of an already ongoing storyline and that I was missing quite a bit of information. While this feeling does lessen as I read, it doesn't go away completely. The author introduces the reader to two young girls - sisters. They start out close, but you can sense the distance between them even before the terrible and tragic accident that occurs.
The author takes the reader backward in time to different times. I liked having these glimpses to the younger days because the present day is when is Disa is older and supposed to be an adult. The story is heavy with the air of mystery that swirls around Disa the most. She's looked down upon by so many and I'm curious constantly as to why? Is it because of her magick? There are certain scenes of where I wanted more. I wanted Zadisa to slow down and listen to those around her, but she plows forward and so things are lost. I have to admit...being a huge lover of cats...one of my favorite scenes includes the dangerous panthera. I loved it. I liked the mystery of this mysterious but I wanted to know what exactly it is. What or who created it and why? I have my suspicions but I'm eager to learn more.
There isn't much that I don't like about this book. It's well written, and I enjoy the complexities between the characters. I just wanted the author to give me a bit more in certain scenes and situations.
Overall I am rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. I'm eager to learn what happens next and to see where this unique mystery goes that surrounds the characters and the dangers that they face.

Good PreQuel

This book is definitely a prequel but it's a good setup for the series. This books does go back and forth between the present and the past.

Once again, completely enthralled with the story. I think the author did a good job of writing these books in a way that you can almost read them in any order and still be entertained and still get that feel of piecing things together the way the main character might. I need to say though I did absolutely not enjoy the time period switch happening EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER (basically). It was a little hard to keep track of what point in time we were in/where we last left off. Still kept me hooked though.

The storytelling in this book was amazing. I listened to the audiobook and right off the bat I knew I was going to love it. The narrator did a fabulous job telling the story and bringing it alive.
I must say I got a little confused while listening to the story. I felt like I should have picked a book prior to this one but I kept on listening. Once I got used to the storytelling of going back to now and what happened a couple of years ago it was a very intriguing book and I hated that it ended.

"What the fetid rot?"

To find answers, I’m forced to return to Yandari and face my past. But I’m not the same girl anymore.

Betrayed was an okay read. I seem to be running into a lot of okay reads in fantasy lately.

The parallel timing didn't really serve well for this novel. I get that it was the hook and provided the tension and reason of getting Disa back to Yandari, but the past blurbs made up chunks of the novel and came off stilted instead. Wagner would have been better served with a linear progression, cutting out some of the past setup. And what happened to Mar?

The writing was well done but the plot itself left me with a lot of questions.

But let's talk about cats. While avoiding magi on her way to Yandari, Disa runs across a hurt panthera. While their whole companionship was extremely unlikely, I didn't mind. I happen to love cats (big or small) and was able to just take it at face value. With how human he acted, I was totally expecting Ruin to turn out to be some sort of panther shifter and thought that would be an epic twist (because cats + good looking shifters? Yes, please.). Alas, twas not to be.

And "bonding:" talk about steamy. It was intimate, sensual, and tense. And that was just for her marks, not even as a bondmate. I really want to know more about this process...and how I can get me some? I really wanted more of this bonding stuff to happen. Needs more steam.

Recommended for fantasy lovers that don't pick apart their books like me. (And potentially read Stolen first? A lot of reviews seemed to have had prior knowledge which I felt helped their reviews...)

I've decided to break this review down into my thoughts on the characters and on the world.

I enjoyed reading about Disa and Zivrune. Their characters are interesting and I found myself hoping that they could find their way back together at some point.

The relationship between Zivrune and Zeron however had me totally confused. Zivrune seemed completely unwilling to admit who Zeron had become, to the point where it just didn't add up for me.

Although the world building is quite extensive, I found the terminology a bit hard to follow and this slowed me down. Some words are explained at the start of the book but a more extensive glossary would have been helpful in my opinion.

The constant change between the past and present was another aspect that took away from the continuity of the story. I wonder if it would have been better to follow the story in chronological order?

Overall, this series does have a lot of potential but I think it wasn't as strong a start compared with Raye Wagner's Sphinx series.

I have purchased my copy on Amazon AU.

3.4 rounded up

This book appears far more complicated than it really is, due to the use of special language and characters in names, etc. That’s a bit hard to follow, even with the generous explanation given by the author in the beginning (read that!). Yet once that is grasped, the plot smooths out and things become far more straight forward. Two higher class girls, in a civilization surrounded by thick jungles, are childhood playmates and possible future bonds (mates) of the prince brothers. Except no one likes who they should and they are all magi who favs their own unique powers.... and, of course, power speaks. And then they grow up.

Pros:
- Highly Inventive
- Characters are unique and stand apart.
- Nothing is really clear till the final page.... and even then..

Cons:
- High strung, even when it doesn’t need to be.
- Much of it is overly complicated for unknown reasons.
- World building is sparse when introduced, though this is obviously a very different world.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm glad the author decided to change the order of the books around as I originally read Stolen first, which I really enjoyed but it left me a little confused as I wasn't 100% sure what was going on. Betrayed gives us that background info and it goes backwards and forwards between now and the past which slowly built up the story and the reveal. I really like Disa in Betrayed whereas in Stolen I wasn't totally sure about her. We get to see her character growth and what has happened to her along the way. Zivrune is an interesting character and is like to know a lot more about him. I'm hoping we will learn more in book 3.
Betrayed gets 5 stars from me, I'm now going to re read Stolen with a clearer picture in my mind and am looking forward to the release of book 3.

I would read book 2 ...but

All these ignorance and secrets just almost made me want to pull my hair out. I mean, I know the suspense has to be built but c’mon, it doesn’t have to be this slow. Rune could have been more forthright and grow a bit of a spine. He appeared weak to me letting all these horrible things happen under his nose. He couldn’t be that gullible.
I hope book 2 will be more fast-paced and the characters more heroic.
Story wise, very intriguing. I’d want to know what will happen next.

Brutal yet compelling, BETRAYED brings me back to why I fell in love with dark fantasy. The lush jungle kingdom of Qrali is as vibrant as it is dangerous, and the chemistry between Disa and Rune is mind blowing. Full of magic, intrigue, and plenty of mystery--this tantalizing tale will keep you glued to the book until the very last page.

Betrayed is a prequel of sorts to the Magi Rising series. Since I had the honor of reading Stolen and Illusions first, Betrayed really helped to explain a lot of questions and mysteries in the other two books. If you are getting this book, be sure to read the other two in order so you can see the "whole picture".

Betrayed explains the origins of Disa who was a young magi just coming into powers. With only her sister, who is supposed to be betrothed to the man she loved, Disa learns along the way the pitfalls of being a Zeta and having magical powers. Her power is extremely strong and useful and she becomes a pawn, more or less, to the current ruler of the land of Q'rali. Throughout her entire journey from one land to another, Disa follows Zivrune( or Rune), her childhood crush, his bodyguard Bicav, and a few others. At first I was wondering why Rune was giving her the cold shoulder and leading her all over the place when it was clearly written by the author that there were mutual feelings for each other. The presence of something greater was eminent throughout the entire story and you got a sense that everything was leading up to the big reveal. One of the greatest things about Raye's stories is her fantastic ability to draw you into her world and immerse you into the mysteries until the very end. With Betrayed, I was led from mystery to revelation, then to more mysteries, and then finally to that cliffhanger! But again, be sure to pick up Stolen and Illusions to understand it all!

The entire Magi Rising series takes place in an unknown world and the author creates a myth full of unique creatures, strange and delectable food, and unusual dangers throughout. Some elements of the land, people, and food reminded me of Asia or the Amazon forest so it was fun to find some comparisons. Whether the author intended to do that, I'm not sure, but I suppose with any type of fiction writing authors will incorporate some kind of realism or personal knowledge. I found the descriptions of Q'rali and all the places they visited (that I can hardly pronounce) quite fascinating and unique. The people speak their own language (again, it could probably be similar to other known languages) and it was fun to try and speak out loud certain words as I picture they would sound.

Overall, Betrayed is definitely the first book in the series you'll want to read first. As I noted earlier, I was given copies of the other two books sort of out of order so I was a bit confused. I'm so glad that Raye decided to put Betrayed as the first book in the series!
If you like magic and lore, love, betrayal, and animals, you'll enjoy reading Betrayed and the entire Magi Rising series.
Thanks again, Raye for a delightful new series!

Book 1 to 3 overall is 4.5 star for me.

I am sure I read the explanation of making it a book 1 somewhere before reading the books. I am glad I did read it because the covers confused me. However, reading order woudn't matter because it turned out okay whichever order you did.

For others who didn't get a warning, you can:
A. Start this book first (if you wanted to be given more deets to prepare you for the next books)

OR

B. Start with book 2 then book 3 then this book 1 (if you wanted something to make you mad crazy or mad angry, go pick one or both *shrug*)

I am a picky reader. I don't read all the way the series if it's dully written even the story was good. I like all the books out in the series so far. The unique style of telling the story in book 1 hooked me in. It just poked my interest to continue following the story. It was a crazy ride when I was reading books 1 to 3, I admit, because I want to strangle the characters because of their *cough* stupidity... but still love them.

I would have rated all books 5 but I felt there should be more of the story, like a novella or novellassssss (for real now, okay?! Wahahaha)

Well, I wanted the story about the characters who were in Heza or before that. I am still hoping Mar would pop out somewhere in book 4 or whatever because like Disa, I hate not knowing. It's like a part of story is missing between the time Disa went away and returned back saving Siv. In book 2, the people in the community Taja ended up with know Zadisa but the info was bland. I want the STORY to know why? What did Zadisa do to convince them. I want the story. Not just an info! STORY that they said Mar is dead. STORY about Siv's mind in panthera after book 1. STORY what happened in Terit before Taja happenedm. NOT JUST INFO!

*sigh* I guess whichever order reading the books ended up to me going mad angry or is it maybe mad crazy? Hmmm I think both *cheeky grin*

A solid beginning

Ok, full disclosure, I read Illusion before I read this book and walked away not really sure if I was going to continue the series. But now that we have the background story, the world building, the character backgrounds, I feel like I can really get into this world.

Raye is a fairly new author to me. My only real exposure to her is as a co author in another series and the original book in this series. I loved the coauthored series and despite it being confusing did enjoy the first book out for the Magi series as well. Now with this book under my belt I think I can say that this is a strong author. Considered YA her characters are not immature. They are brave, outspoken and willing to fight for what they want. As evidenced in Dasi. Where some of the other characters make you want to slap them, she actually DOES! When you want to look at the character and say, what are you thinking?? She DOES! It's honestly refreshing that she isnt being led around and silently questioning but going blindly ahead anyways.

So, to the story. This is a book that is told between present and past POV's so as we see where Disa is we see how she has come to be there. The events that led to her having to flee and then eventually what brings her back. There are two princes, one good but weak and one evil but strong willed. Two sister, one young and stuck dealing with the choices others make for her and one smart and a survivor but who puts her faith in the wrong people.

As you read you will see how their relationships begin, develop and eventually end within this book and set us up for an even more exciting adventure in the next.

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review.

Good but a lot of back and forth in time frames.

This is a complicated two fold review for me.
1. High star rating for Wagner's writing style and intense creativity. She can create a world so vividly it's tangible and wrought with emotions. You fall into her web and have a hard time retreating out of it. The characters are strong and unwavering throughout the storyline. She also twists the knife held in her writers hand and easily carves out a wicked, deceptive plot. Again, 5 stars for this.
2. Here's where this gets complicated. I read Stolen awhile back assuming it was book one. I was confused by the names and some of the story had holes. Come to find out there was a prequel to Stolen perhaps a Novella that turned into what I just read. It did help clarify characters and why there names were all these "Z" names I didn't understand when I read Stolen. So that helped but it got bumpy for me from chapter to chapter of this back and forth in time storytelling. She is an amazing author so I was fully engaged but due to that intensity, in each time period, form one chapter to the next left me overwhelmed. It got confusing because I was all "wait...where did 3 years ago stop again" because we bounced back to today. I had to work at piecing it together. It wasn't as easy as just telling it, 3 years ago..., 2 1/2 years ago, 2 years ago and today. It was jumping all over. For that 3 stars.
Hence the 4 stars to balance it out. I'm going to go back and read Stolen again and finish the series because it's going to be worth it!

Non-spoilers:

So, I have to hand it to Raye on the intrigue of the world she created for this book/series. I found the concept interesting, and there was pretty good world building, but some things that were rather confusing, and I think some of this was the language in this world. However, I had some trouble with the magic system and things taking place with poor explanation for the reader.

The back and forth time-jumps in the story weren't an issue for me, I understood their use to build up the suspense, but I typically don't enjoy books with too much of this apart from occasional flashbacks for character development, but it might be part of why I didn't love the book.

Additionally, the relationship between some of the characters seemed like a stretch and there were some continuity issues I had with the characters.

Ultimately, I think the story is interesting, but I think the author would have benefited from some more editing to convey better understanding of the magic system in this world. The character issues I don't think could be fixed, unfortunately, because their behaviors that seemed odd to me were critical to the story. It wasn't a deal-breaker for me, I still enjoyed the book, but would have loved the characters more if their behavior felt more true to character. Maybe more character development?

I haven't yet decided if I will finish the series, but I have added book 2 to my "want to read", so it isn't ruled out.

I completely didn’t realize that this was the same author of Darkest Drae. I loved the first book of that series until the second book flopped around like a fish out of water and then the third book was just the fish’s corpse. This series I was interested in the first book but I was completely lost as to what was going on. I felt like I had more questions than answers and then that ending left me speechless but not in a good way.
First off why does anyone want to be in love with a man who can’t even stand up for himself much less explain his feelings to the woman he loves? Zivrune was a wet noodle to me.
Second they never explained why the ziyana did a total 180 on her sister disa after resurrecting her and then helps her out again with sisterly love? Is Disa messing up these souls?
Third why in the world does Zivrune run from the room after attacking Ziyana to get to his brother leaving behind the woman he claims to love? Again wet noodle. I thought that panther soul would put some backbone in him but alas the panther gained Zivrune’s whimpy side.
I’m confused why they sent Disa away without telling her anything and why Disa didn’t just watch Zeron’s soul depart. I’d wanna make sure he was dead.

But out of some weird sense of inflicting pain onto myself I’m skimming the second book to see it it gets better. I did like the first book of the darkest drae. It’s so bad and I’m only half through and I have no clue what’s going on at all. Yuck.

I really enjoyed this book and was captured from the beginning. The author creates a unique world where magik is important and creates caste system where the stonger your magik the more you have to trade which is how the money system works. You can either trade in magik or owe people favors but owing others for goods or services is not ideal,so when Disa and Ana lose their parents to the buyi(an unknown creature or phenomenon that they are trying to figure out and eradicate) Ana turns to the Princes and gains her magik bond and Title of Zeta,a high magi. However, Disa has to rely on her older sister to take care of her bc she isn't old enough to become zeta and her magi is believed to be useless. However, when one of the Princes suspects her magik is stronger than they realized a devious plan is put into motion and by the time anyone figures it out,it may be to late to save themselves much less their people. This story is filled with love, hardships, betrayal and u imaginable consequences. But a warning, do yourselves a favor and go ahead and get book 2 because after the abrupt cliffhanger you're going to want to jump straight into it!

I enjoyed this story, but I think it was made easier by the fact that I read the second book in the series first. There is a lot of back and forth from Disa's current situation to her past and how she managed to find herself in the circumstances that take us into the second book.

Disa is an insightful character with a latent magic she doesn't even realize she has. And the other characters simply build around her from one who is flighty, to one who is oblivious, and then to one who is evil incarnate. The story runs the gambit, and it answered so many of the unanswered questions I was left with after reading the second book. I look forward to reading the third and finding out where it takes us.

This author has a brilliant and dark mind that delves into the places we are frightened to go but find alluring. We are drawn into her dark worlds with the caveat that there are red flags along the way and moments we might not be ready to face or have difficulty processing. Personally, I love travelling where she takes me, and I am always pleasantly surprised by the twisted stories within her mind.

Slow start 3.5

I liked this book actually. The idea and flow are well thought out. The backstory transitions are not horrible, but they are frequent. It is like there are two story lines at once. However, once the flashbacks have caught us up to who Disa is, the book is about 80% finished. That leaves barely 20% for the action and plot. Granted it isn’t a long book, but I think some events definitely could have taken place sooner. Or a basic explanation of who Disa is to start off. At one point she tells some minion characters her real identity, but the reader is not informed then. It might have saved some confusion to have explained a few basic facts about her history.

Otherwise? Great book. I like the writing even if it’s younger. With the romance, I’m not totally sure how it started or if it should be as strong as it is given that Zivrune sent her away. Disa is a bit whiny and will obey others a times, but she is not a total MC failure. She is like able in her own ways.

I was super happy to read this book! I know the order was a bit messed up before but this was a really great first book!

I love Disa as a character, she is such a strong stubborn character but you can tell she really just wants the best for the people she loves!
I do also really like Rune, he was a good contrast to Disa and I can see why she likes him so much and Bicav is probaly one of my favourite characters.

I really liked the magik system too, with the different abilities that I never would have really thought about especially the twists at the end like come on kinda cool!

The setting is interesting too, I do wish we got to see more of certain areas like just more description or insight especially the capital which I hope we will get more especially the kumdars house.

The back and forth flowed really well and super enjoyable couldn't put it down!

Happy with the new order so much more sense and flow!

I got this because I go to an author event where this author signs, and wanted to try her novels out. Sadly, I just couldn't get connected to this story. Maybe it was because all of the character names were basically the same? Maybe it was because the world that she created was hard for me to picture? Maybe it was the format of the chapters, where it went from past to present, that confused me? There were a lot of factors involved that could have had a disconnect with me, honestly. The concept was really good and for what I was able to obtain, I enjoyed. I would actually like to know how things get completed with the characters and how things get resolved, but I just don't think I can make it through another novel not really knowing half of the stuff that is going on.

I'm glad I got a chance to read it and maybe later in life I'll try again to see if I'm able to connect to the story better.

Confused and unsatisfied

This read like a very rough draft with half the plot missing. The bones of a good story was there- the only reason I read the entire convoluted mess-but so much was missing. Can we say character development? Cohesive storyline? It wasn't all terrible, but fair warning you have to get through a lot of confusion to see the underlying story. Not reading the next in the series, but looking forward to seeing how this author grows. Awesome idea, poorly executed. (Disclaimer: I'm not a grammar critic. I can get passed anything if I can connect with the characters in a great COHESIVE story. Grammar can be learned, actual talent can't. This author has the talent, but needs a new team behind the scenes- this finished project could have been soooo much better... I mean seriously what was actually going on in the story? I wouldn't be able to tell you.)
