S. O. Thomas is the author of the middle grade novels #GraveyardChallenge, book 5 in the FrightVision series, and The Slug Queen Chronicles. She was part of the 2018 summer #WriteMentor program.
With her infectious energy and a penchant for the peculiar, no one has ever accused S. O. of being mundane. She has a B.F.A. in Fashion Design. She spends her days designing creepy-cute clothes. At night, she dreams of magical places that end up spilling out of her brain and onto the page. She lives on the edge of a haunted forest in a small town in Massachusetts with her partner, their two cats, and a real-life gremlin.
This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.
I was very surprised by the underlying darkness and heart in Framed for Life, the previous FrightVision book, and the next book #GraveyardChallenge lives up to its predecessor! This one follows Qenna and her friends who are all having a slumber party when they dare each other to partake in the "Graveyard Challenge". They parade through the local graveyard to take a selfie with a tombstone but, unfortunately, Qenna captures a creepy fog in her picture, one that is getting closer and closer.
This was a really fun ghost story! The writing was simple but fresh and the dialogue was witty. We also have a protagonist who recently lost her mother, so this lends a fair bit of heart to the story and its climax. #GraveyardChallenge is a great addition to the FrightVision series!
This is actually a series of 10 books so far, conceived by Culliver Grantz, and several are written by him, in the same vein as the Goosebumps books made so wonderfully popular by R.L. Stine, whose MasterClass I've also taken, and I happen to think his writing / organizing his writing is great, so double disclosure, I guess.
This is a super-slim book, but it packs a powerful, creepy whallop. Qenna invites only her "real" friends to her slumber party, not Harley-who-lives-in-a-graveyard, but her father runs into Harley's grandmother at the grocery store and invites her to the party, unbeknownst to Qenna.
Until Haley shows up, of course. The girls were once friends, but now in the 7th grade at Kingsland Prep the social scene has shifted, and Qenna wants nothing to do with Harley.
And Harley's noticed. How could she not? So when she shows up at the party, and overhears Qenna's nasty comments, you've got the perfect set up for the viral social media #Graveyard Challenge. It's simple: go into a graveyard and take a selfie with a tombstone. Harley dares Qenna and the other girls to do it. She even offers to go with Qenna.
She assures Qenna the graveyard is quiet and safe at night; there's no such things as vampires and zombies. But what she doesn't mention is that someone's waiting for them, or waiting for Qenna, in particular, someone very near and dear to Harley, someone Harley will do just about anything to bring back to life.
I loved the ending, which takes what could be a really grim, scary situation and puts a somewhat touching, hopeful spin on it. And I really enjoyed how the author played with the bully / bullied perspectives to deliver the creepy plot twists.
This is perfect for a quick thrill! Enjoy the read.

So, this book has officially passed the second one as the best in the series (of the first five. I'm reading these in chronological order for the record). The first four books had endings I'd argue were happy. Book 1 ended with the main character being captured by his mom's boyfriend, but they were saved and it was mentioned they were going to see their dad, so there's still hope at the end of that one. This one didn't end on a positive note. You could argue the very last word Qenna said in the book was a positive note, but the character is still stuck in the spirit world now. And that's why I love it. That ending brought me the most terror I've felt so far in this series. And the twist that Harley was actually trying to bring back Ashley, rather than save Qenna, definitely caught me off guard. And a lot of the story does actually have moments that have you on the edge of your seat, wondering just what's going to happen to Qenna, and then when that twist comes up, you're surprised. I also was actually glad that Qenna heard her mom's voice in the spirit world when being warned to not let her (Ashley) touch her at first. I thought "Well, I definitely like that she got to hear her mother's voice again." and then, that bomb is dropped at the end that Ashley took over her body after one final picture and Qenna was stuck in the spirit world screaming has me now not as happy since she's reunited with her mom, by being stuck in the world of the dead.
But the sheer terror I felt reading that. I loved it! This was definitely the best of this series so far! I'd highly recommend this one!

‘Graveyard Challenge’ by Sasha Thomas is a gripping tale featuring Qenna Scott who finds herself being tormented by a malicious spirit. It all begins with a seemingly harmless dare to go into the graveyard and take a picture with a gravestone, hence the name ‘Graveyard Challenge’. Qenna and two of her friends venture into the graveyard to complete the dare and end up getting more than they bargained for when a horrific spirit binds itself to Qenna. Qenna grows increasingly weaker, experiencing hair loss and strange marks on her body. Finally, it’s up to Qenna and her friend Harley to somehow vanquish the sinister spirit and free Qenna from its clasp. Moving on, the writer truly has done a remarkable job with the twists and turns in this story. The groundwork for all the twists was laid earlier in the story, but with such a light touch that they are easily overlooked and keeps readers guessing till the end. Apart from that, the narration of the main character was interesting and suitable to her character, comprising of expertly manipulated reveals that further improved on the story. Furthermore, the plot of the story was well developed without feeling too rushed or packed with too much information at once. In my opinion, the ending of this story was enthralling and unexpected, throwing me off guard as I had expected a typical happy ending where Qenna defeats the evil spirit. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I give it five out of five stars.

Book Review: Frightvision ( @frightvisionbooks )Number 5/ #graveyardchallenge by S.O. Thomas and Culliver Crantz Rating: 10 out of 5 stars!! (dont judge this book is so amazing it broke my scale!!) Content Warning: death, grieving process Truly Im 26 but this book still scares the crap out of me!! I screamed! I cried!! I was on the edge of my couch the whole time!! I also fell in love with these characters!! The last Frightvision book reminded me so much of Goosebumps but this one BLEW Goosebumps right out the water!! The diversity, the realistic portrayal of grieving like I've never seen in a children's book(as someone who experienced the death of a grandparent at a young age I really would've loved that as a kid) and they may seem like such small parts in the story but they really added to the characters and their motivations! I love all the unique families and seeing how they work so well! The friendships are so strong and the kids are so realistic! I hope to see these characters come back soon. I love the idea of a Graveyard Challenge ; its so current and you can just picture kids doing this! There was a part where I thought I know what was gonna happen and I was still really excited to see it happen. I thought I knew what turns would be taken and I wanted to see it play out ; I still love a predictable book BUT I was so wrong!! It went the exact opposite in the best way and every second holds you in this place where you feel like a kid again!
This was a good creepy one for my two middle grade readers. A group of friends get together for a typical Saturday night slumber party with an unexpected guest. They make the best of things to salvage their evening and decide to partake in the widely known "Graveyard Challenge." As one might expect, some of the girls are more eager to participate than others. Unforeseen events and some creepy photos set the stage for the mysterious adventure with some high stakes and a little tween drama for good measure.
This was a great spooky tale and a real page turner. If you're looking for some good middle grade fiction and your kids have liked Goosebumps, or Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, I'd highly recommend Graveyard Challenge.
I will admit that I love the FrightVision Books as much as my 10 year old daughter! She read this book in two days and told me I just had to read it! Of course, I was excited to. This book is about all the things kids do these days, challenges, selfies and hanging out with friends. It's the challenge that gets them into trouble. If you or your child is a Goosebumps fan, this is a great book series for you! I'd recommend to boys and girls. It's perfect to read as a bedtime story as the books aren't too scary but very spooky. I think these books are great for those who are reluctant to read because they have a great pace, never boring, and are real page turners! Enjoy!
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the twists and turns the plot took.
Qenna has big plans with her friends for a slumber party at her house. But an unexpected guest shows up. Harley. She and Qenna used to be friends, but drifted apart. People at school call her “Haunted Harley” because she lives in a graveyard. Things go bad when Harley dares the girls at the party to do the #graveyardchallenge .
I believe kids will enjoy this book. It has a lot of suspense and is relevant to the times. So many kids have their own phones and do silly challenges for social media these days. I think this books has a good lesson about not giving in to peer pressure to do potentially dangerous challenges.

For my 7 year old daughter, this was one of the scariest of the FrightVision books, but she still loved it. She would go from asking me to stop reading because it was scary to coming back to me begging for another chapter before the end of the day. I’ll admit, there were times where she would want to stop reading but I continued without her because I was so gripped by the story.
Definitely one of the horror-y MG reads in this lot, the one that most reminiscent of Goosebumps. Really entertaining/keeps the reader's interest-- even the end I saw as a surprise!
This book is perfect for the middle schoolers who love to read books that are a little scary - not too much! My daughter and I read it together. It's a real page turner.
Ohh my son and I loved this one so much. The ending!!!! I hope a second book comes because I need to know what happened!!!! This series is like candy! So easily devoured. If you don’t own this for the young reader in your life, or even for yourself... what are you doing?
