415 Ink #3

Hellion

Rate this book
415 Book Three

From the moment SFPD Detective Ruan Nicholls meets Ivo Rogers, he knows the tattoo artist is going to bring chaos to his neat, orderly life. A hellion down to the bone, Ivo is someone Ruan not only doesn’t understand, he’s not even sure he needs to. Everything about Ivo is vibrant, brash, cocky, and arrogant, and Ruan wants no part of him.

Or at least that’s the lie he tells himself when he damps down his desire for the social wild child life tosses into his path.

For Ivo Rogers, life revolves around two things—his family and 415 Ink, the tattoo shop he co-owns with his four brothers. His family might be stitched together by their battle scars from growing up in foster care, but their brotherhood is tight—and strong enough to hold Ivo together during the times when he falls apart.

Now Ivo faces a new challenge when he falls for a cop with an old-school mentality on how a man looks and acts. Ruan is the promise of a life Ivo thought he’d never have, but their clashing perspectives threaten any chance of a relationship. Being the family’s hellion makes it easy to be misunderstood, yet Ivo has faith Ruan will not only embrace who he is but love him as well.

I loved this one so much...Ivo's story was everything I'd hoped it would be. Full review to follow soonish!

Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb here...

and say that while I'm pretty sure there will be at least 2 more books in this series because we've still got to get Luke and Bear's stories to discover and while I know I'm very much looking forward to them for me I think Ivo's story was it and by it I mean this was the story that I was truly waiting for...this was the one that was going to get 5 stars from me not because it was a five star read but because there were only 5 stars for me to give. I loved Gus's story and Mace's story got 5 stars from me because I loved it even more than Gus's but even if there'd been more than 5 stars that's what it would have gotten but Ivo...well I'd happily give it 5 stars and then some.

Ivo's the brother who's captured my attention and intrigued me the most from the very beginning. While his life's been easier than his brothers in some ways in other ways he's faced his own demons and still is. Ivo's spent his whole life trying to fit into boxes to make people like and accept him...to be enough but the one thing he's learned from it all is that when you try to fit into other people's boxes you end up leaving behind pieces of yourself in your efforts to conform until you feel like there's nothing left anymore. Thankfully Ivo had his brothers to show him that not only is he enough he's more...so much more than enough. He's finally at a place in his life where he's comfortable with who he is and with the fact that the only person whose approval he truly needs is his own.

Ruan Nicholls grew up in a different time and lives in a different world...he grew up in a time when admitting you were gay could garner you anything from rejection by those you love to a beating or worse and as a by the book cop his world is still fairly conservative but it's changing and Ruan knows that if he doesn't want to spend his life alone than he needs to change to but somethings are easier said than done and sometimes with the right motivation a person can find the strength to do what's needed.

Ivo and Ruan's paths have crossed before...ten years ago when Ruan was still wearing a uniform and not a detective's badge, but Ivo was too young back then and Ruan's career was just getting started and while they found each other attractive it was a case of time and circumstance not being what it needed to be.

I found it so easy to relate to Ivo's family dynamics with the over bearing, well meaning but meddlesome brothers because he's the youngest and having held that position in my own family for the past 60 years. I get it...I know what it's like to be the youngest in the family, that person who no matter how old you are, what your accomplishments are or what's happened in your life to the rest of your family you're always going to be 'the baby' of the family. it's all done out of love and good intentions but let's face it we all know what road is paved with those good intentions.

Between Ivo's brothers and Ruan's internal struggle to be the man that he wanted to be and that he knew Ivo needed him to be , I enjoyed the way Ivo and Ruan's relationship developed and that they came together first as friends and then as lovers. It wasn't that the physical attraction wasn't there but once again for them it was a case of time and circumstance but I loved that they didn't let this stop the relationship from developing on a different level first before they became lovers.

'Hellion' was for me one of those stories that just fell into place and worked even more so than 'Rebel' or 'Savior' and i really loved both of those books so who knows when we get to Luke and Bear's stories I may be changing my mind about which book is my favorite in this series but to be honest I'd be really surprised it that happened which is not to say that I'm not looking forward to the next one in this series.

Family, love, and a strong theme of "being, unapologetically, yourself" are what make Hellion another enjoyable installment of Rhys Ford's 415 Ink series.

Ivo Rogers is the perpetual "little brother" of 415 Ink. Ivo has some baggage - a lot of it, actually. He, along with his brothers, had been dealt a less than stellar childhood and time in the system. And being a bit more different than the others made Ivo a target and made the others even more protective of him, but Ivo is strong and self-assured and he's not going to stuff himself into a box of someone else's making. Mad respect for Ivo.

Ruan Nicholls is a by-the-book detective and he has no idea what hit him when he finds himself attracted to Ivo. Ivo challenges everything about Ruan's neat and ordered world. Ruan is not in the closet, but he isn't exactly flying the pride flag, either. Being a gay cop, even in San Francisco, is not necessarily easy. Ruan is ready, though, to find some happy of his own and maybe, just maybe, Ivo could be the one.

I've been trying to figure out why Hellion didn't resonate with me as much as the first two books. Maybe it's because of the lack of conflict, or at least not enough conflict. With the MC's being a by-the-book detective who does not color outside the lines and a tattoo artist who regularly pushes the boundaries of what is considered "normal", I expected a bit more relationship angst, but everything was easy and light. Ivo and Ruan clicked and kept on clicking. Or maybe it's because of just how meddling Ivo's family is. There does come a point when I want to tell people to back off. I'm glad they're tight knit, but they were over the top in the meddling department. One thing I should note, however, is that the overbearing meddling family is a common theme in this author's books. It generally does not bother me over much.

What I really appreciated, however, was the lack of melodrama between the MC's. I love tension, you see, but melodrama gets tedious and I'm happy for the lack of it in Hellion. Ivo and Ruan get their HEA and even though I didn't feel like they had to fight for it, I still am glad they got there.

Luke's book is next, and I suspect he's not going to go willingly to his HEA, so bring it!

Ivo has always been a unique child. Wildly talented but also wildly unconventional. I never quite warmed up to him in the previous books but he definitely intrigued me so I was excited to get into his head for this book.

There was some continuation issues with the re-meeting of Ruan and Ivo after the death of Mace's dad. Usually, such things irritate me but I preferred the one in this book so I didn't mind as much and I also didn't mind the age gap (10 years?) between our MCs.

Ivo was Ivo, he was creative and original in a way that only he can pull off, was surprisingly caring and o so thoughtful. Raun was a great guy and though he was out at work, he still found it difficult to trust because of past experiences which involved violence and death and all the other nasty stuff.

Consequently, he struggled with preconceived notions about masculine behaviour which certainly did not apply to Ivo. Given what he'd gone through, I totally understood him and why he needed to adapt to being attracted to guys who made him uncomfortable.

Naturally, this differing outlooks led to some conflict and I liked the way it was handled. There was real soul searching and actual adult conversations around the issues, which were then ironed out and continually worked on. It was such a breath of fresh air.

As a result the above, their relationship grew so organically that when they finally had sex (like just twice in the whole book-super slow burn), it felt like the cherry on top and not the basis for the whole relationship. I loved everything about it and honestly didn't want the book/story to end. These men complemented each other perfectly.

Of course we got glimpses of our two previous couples and plenty scenes with the other brothers especially my fave, Bear. I really do hope his book is awesome. He doesn't deserve anything less!

Speaking of brothers, I really liked Luke in other books but its like he did a 360 in this. He seemed colder and frankly ruder. I understood that he had bad history with Cops which informed his behaviour towards Ruan but the references made to this "darkness/danger" puzzled/intrigued me in equal measures. What EXACTLY happened to him to be so afraid of hooking up because he could end up killing them if he got pissed off? Freaky.

O and that ending with the newest tattoo artist in 415 Ink and Luke! WHAAATTTTT?!!! Man, Rhys Ford your are so wrong for that. So so wrong! I need that book now!

The brothers have a unique and special relationship even though there are so many different personalities between the five of them. They all are above and beyond loyal, to one another, to their friends and to the causes they whole-heartedly believe in.

It was no surprise to see them become a little overbearing when Ivo, the baby of the five...finds Ruan, someone he "likes"...hoping to eventually it would become a lot more than merely "liked". Ivo and Ruan have a few rough spots. They are both young, but Ivo is wise almost beyond what you would expect for his age and that’s why he fit so well with Ruan. Both guys could also be said to be a bit on the domestic" side. It was a nice change to have a character like Ivo, who’s eccentric, willing to bring his cop boyfriend meals at work and willing to feed his cat and do his laundry. Things that many wouldn't consider "manly", (maybe I could borrow him:)

Ruan wasn’t really sure how he felt or how to handle things. He had another more private side that was quite interesting but unexpected and "off the norm". Overall, though, this was another phenomenal book by Rhys Ford with wonderful characters. It's a great addition to the 415 Ink series. It was also good that nobody had to die for Ivo and Ruan to reach their happiness.

Wow, that was a bit different from what I usually look for in this genre. But it was a good experience.

I really liked these main characters. And not only them, but all the brothers. I haven't read the previous books in this series yet, but I needed this particular one for one of my reading challenges. Though I will definitely read the previous books. I'm sure I've had the first one on my TBR heap for some time. It will be fun to see the stories of the other brothers.

I have a sweet spot for tortured heroes, and these brothers definitely are ones. Ivo is a very good example here. Together with Ruan, they created an unusual but well-matched couple. It was a surprisingly sweet story.

Though I guess I was expecting a bit more storyline. This is a very simple story. There is one point when Ivo and Ruan argue, but they soon find out where the difference comes from and they quickly reconcile. Sometimes I wished Ivo would show more tolerance and understanding towards Ruan. He expected full acceptance from Ruan, but at times I thought he wasn't giving it to Ruan himself. But it wasn't a big problem.

Overall it's a good story, and like I said, I will probably read the rest of the books in this series.

Oh Yes!!!! This was so great and everything I hoped for.

Ivo is a great character and after reading this story I kind of understand why his brothers are so protective of him. although he can take care of himself.

Ruan is the perfect match and I loved that it was not " oh you wear heels ... ok" but that we could see how he struggled with it due to his upbringing. but he loved Ivo enough to work through his issues ... and Ivo gave him enough time, which took a lot of courage!

I love this series and I think this one is the best book till now. can't wait to get Lukes and Bears story.
so Luke is next and hopefully soon!!!!

BTW: love the cat :)

So the most interesting part of this book was the last handful of pages that teased Luke’s story. I’m so disappointed. Ivo was such an interesting character and yet his story was completely uninteresting. Honestly, it was just a meandering path through life as an adult, wake up, go to work, maybe wave to the neighbor, guilt trips from family, go to bed. The cat was the most interesting part but even that felt like gratuitous filler after a while. If it weren’t for the cat, description of tacos/dumplings and Ruan being at work (and that’s it. Just work. No crime storyline. Just....being at work), the book would have been 70% shorter.

Fans of the author’s other work might enjoy the Easter eggs of other characters here and there.

This last bit is just my own pet peeve but could have done without the fart references.

Let me start by saying that I didn’t know Ivo was going to be my favorite brother but he totally is. There’s something so strong yet so vulnerable about him that just grabbed a hold of my heart and never let go. I also love Ruan because he’s a man who’s conflicted by how he feels and what he thinks he knows but instead of holding on to that, he opens himself up to not only learning about Ivo but also about himself.

Ivo Rogers is brash and bold and totally sweet when you least expect it. Ruan Nicholls has been trapped inside his own perception about himself but the moment he meets Ivo, his life starts to change.

I wish I could put into words how this whole series has made me feel but especially this book. Rhys Ford somehow makes every emotion…every bit of anger and love and fear and happiness seem so real by painting this amazing picture with their words. Ivo’s greatest strength is his ability to accept himself for who he is. He’s very “in-your-face” but he’s earned it the hard way. Ivo is also very understanding and he sees that Ruan is conflicted about his own feelings and instead of letting it pull them apart, he lets Ruan grow and come to terms with himself in his own way.

Ruan goes through a lot in this book. He struggles to bring who he thinks he is and his attraction to Ivo into some sort of idea that makes sense. I love that he’s open to learning and that he tries hard to explain to Ivo what he’s going through so that Ivo doesn’t think there’s something wrong with himself. Ruan takes the blame for his own shortcomings and works at resolving them so he can make his relationship with Ivo work.

Of course, Ivo’s family is a bright spot in this story and I can honestly say that this patched together group of men is probably in the running for my favorite fictional family (the Top Spot is held by the Morgan’s, another of Rhys Ford’s amazing creations.) Their fierce love and protective instincts for each other are the kind of family we should all be blessed with. Family should always accept you for who you are fundamentally.

If you haven’t read the first two books in this series, then I suggest you run out and buy them. You can read this story without having read the first two, but trust me when I say every book in this series is fantastic. Reading them will just enrich the experience of reading Ivo and Ruan’s story.

I loved Ivo from the first novel, and I really enjoyed this. Ruan was a great guy, honest and yeah a little fucked up, but there was communication and honesty and it was fantastic. Really looking forward to Luke's book, because holy shit what a set up there at the end. Will definitely continue the series.

I just LOVE this series. This is one of those series about a group of brothers that could have given up and let life give them what they got insteaad amongst all odds, they have made a better life for themselves and slowly.but not easily they are finding their true love as well. This does not happen without heartache though and lots of ups and downs. One thing is for sure, no matter what they have one another’s backs against any and everything. So you better watch out if you are one of those people that sets out to hurt one of them because you will have alll the brothers coming for you.

Ivo is the youngest brother of all of them so everyone is overly protective when it comes to him. Especially with the past he has endured. So when they believe that he is getting down or that someone is going to try and bring him down, the brothers will all rally together.

Ivo met Ruan when he was seventeen and he snuck out of his house to go to a club. Everything about the night was perfect up until it wasn’t and that is when he meets Ruan, a man that he will never forget. Now seven years later Ivo is about to come face to face with the detective once again when he comes to his house to deliver bad news or maybe not so bad news to one of his brothers.

Ruan cannot believe he is coming face to face to the one guy that made such an impression on him at the he of seventeen but now as an adult, Ruan knows that he has met his match. The problem is Ivo is different from most people. He has is own style and he lets no ones opinion of him change who he is. The problem lies in the fact that Run, though gay, is more old school then he care for. He is not one flaunt his sexuality and Ivo could not conceal his even if he tried.

This is going to be a major problem for them if there cannot be some sort of compromise because Ivo learned the hard way that hiding who he is, it’s detrimental to his mental health and he knows he cannot do that.

Will Ruan be able to accept every part of Ivo? How will Ruan handle certain aspects of Ivo’s past? Can these two men figure out what is best for them as a couple or is it just another passing ship in the night for them?

This book was such an amazing read! I love each of the characters in this series and when one book in the series ends, I cannot wait for the next one to come out. And after the teaser Rhys gives for the next book, I know I will be waiting impatiently for it to come out!! I soooooo look forward to whatever comes nwxt!!

Aaaaaand she's back! Rhys has once again claimed the top spot on my favorite authors list with this story. I LOVED Ivo, he was everything I had hoped for when he appeared in the first two books. Vulnerable, sweet, but with enough of an edge to make him interesting and sexy too. And to pair him up with the world-weary and somewhat lonely cop Ruan was perfect. My only quibble is that name-I have no idea how to pronounce it and it just didn't seem to fit the cop's personality at all. But that's just nitpicking, because the story was a delight. I loved how these two cautiously but honestly approached a relationship. There were a couple scenes where I thought, uh-oh, here we go right off the rails into a cliché, but she had these two talk to each other like adults and work things out. It was awesome. And now I'm just gushing, so I'll just finish up by saying that if you haven't read this yet, you should definitely put it on your list to read next.

There is so much love, fear, and hope in this story that I flew through the pages. Seriously, I kept getting distracted by the book so I burned dinner. Thanks for that Rhys Ford, lol! And it’s not just the sex. This a sweet, sexy, must read romance. I can’t even begin to explain how much I loved this book. Just read it.

I love this series, and like most 415 Ink fans, yes, I’ve been waiting for Ivo’s story. The bits and pieces I’ve read that have clued me in to who he is have only served to make me curious.

Ivo’s backstory was as complex as I expected it to be, but unlike previous books in this series, the angst here is all Ivo’s and not as hard on the reader. That being said, his past was as sad as I expected, if not more. Ruan was complicated in a different way, and his willingness to open himself to Ivo and to learn and change won me over. However, if I had one issue with the story, it was that we did not learn as much about Ruan. There was hinting to a past with issues, but it did not go too far below the surface, and that left me wanting more.

That being said, I love the pairing of Ivo and Ruan, the meshing of opposites attract. I was completely pulled in by the slow burn of the relationship. I loved their “getting to know each other” time, and how the focus was on intimacy. This to me set the stage for them to go full speed ahead when they decided they were all in, and I was all in with them.

As always, the core family was present, and it was great to see where the pairings of Gus & Rey and Mace & Rob are now, and the snippets of Chris and Luke were great. More hints of Luke and his tortured past—thanks to the expected teaser at the end of the book—which, wow that seems like it will be angsty! That being said, it was great to see Ruan become part of that family.

Great supporting characters as always, and love the appearance of Maite! And families? How about that crossover from the Morgans? Loved it. Loved my Earl time, and Spot the cat was everything. Overall, this was a great addition to the series, and I am really looking forward to the next one. Did I mention Spot the cat was the bomb?

Ultimately, I enjoyed this WAY more than the first two books. It wasn’t perfect. There were weird time jumps that weren’t obvious until someone would say it’s been weeks or months… I didn’t like that. I know that we’re told that Ivo and Ruan love each, but I felt like I missed the leap from like to love somewhere in those time jumps. There was lots of UST through most of the book. No steam until about the 75% mark. That was unexpected. I don’t have a problem with the lack smex if the story is off the charts, but this didn’t quite hit that mark.

So 3.5 stars rounded up because it’s Ivo.

This had all the makings of a very promising opposites attract story with a bit of an age gap for extra piquancy, but I was a little disappointed in how it was written. The sentences are rather long and have a rambling quality to them that slows down the pacing of the narrative too much and makes it harder to feel the intensity of what the MC’s are going through and really get that connection to them.

Both MC’s are fascinating characters though and the character development was well written. Ivo’s had a truly heartbreaking childhood and went through some very dark periods, which makes it so important for him to finally be able to unapologetically be himself. Ruan is great for him, steady and loyal, but has to overcome his own fears about what it means to be out, and stand out. After a rocky start things go quite fast, and for me the commitment and I-love-you’s followed too hastily after the brief amount of time they actually spent together.

There’s a heartwarming cast of secondary characters, what with Ivo’s meddlesome, slightly overbearing and extremely protective brothers and I’ll admit to being curious about the stories of the others even if this book wasn’t totally my cup of tea.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Finally! Ivo’s book! And it was definitely worth the wait. I’ve loved this series from the start but it has always been the beautiful, heel wearing youngest brother who has properly had my heart. And Ivo is just as heartbreakingly fabulous in his own book as I always expected he would be.

This book starts with a teenage Ivo defending himself against a would-be rapist while wearing sparkly heels and dressed like a naughty schoolgirl. This first scene is a torturous read but it introduces us to a terrified but defiant Ivo and introduces us readers to Ruan as a beautiful and kind policeman who takes care of the bloodied teenager. I can’t imagine a more perfect first scene and I’d dare anyone not to shed a few tears over these first few pages. Ivo and Ruan’s relationship is a decade in the making but their first encounter is really beautiful.

As with the first two books, much of this story focuses on Ivo growing into himself and coming to terms with his horrific childhood. Readers will remember many of Ivo’s early experiences from Gus’ book but because Ivo is so much younger than Gus, his memories are more fragmented and his experiences in the system are quite different. And while Ruan seems to be older and have himself together, his loneliness is awful and his experiences as a closted cop are heartbreaking and thought provoking.

Almost surprisingly, this isn’t a depressing read. Ivo’s passion for his art is joyful and Ruan’s enormous cat is delightful. I love catching up with the brothers’ expanding family and I love the way the family is expanding across the series.

As a foster carer myself, this series has hit me in the heart from the start. The brothers’ experiences feel real to me and I recognise many of my own kids in the boys. There is a powerful passage in this book where Ivo tries to explain foster care to Ruan as being similar to trying to teach a dog to live in a tree. It’s a beautifully written passage that explores a brutally uncomfortable truth. I cried through this book as I have through the others - but I also love that this is a hopeful series and the brothers are survivors who create a beautiful family for themselves. This story won’t stand alone - readers will need to start at the beginning of the series - but I can’t recommend this series highly enough.

DNF at 83%

It seems silly to DNF at such a late stage, but truth be told Ivo and Ruan bored me. I loved the idea that they had left a lasting impression on each other many years back, but I was really disappointed that in the present day, they shared no chemistry whatsoever, and I really struggled to find a connection between them. I thought the pacing of their "relationship" was odd. They never actually spent any quality time together, ever, so I don't get how they went straight to the "old married couple" stage. Ivo's sharp and snarky personality that I fell in love with in the two previous books only seemed to surface for his brothers, and I didn't really feel like I understood the person he was with Ruan (because I never really saw what went through his head when he was in Ruan's space or doing things for Ruan). As for Ruan, I found myself unable to empathize with his hangups and struggled to figure out what was so compelling about him.

I had one minor problem with this book. It was a little too much of an insta-love story for me. Even though time technically passes in within the story really Ivo and Ruan spend most of that time too busy to spend any time together. This left me feeling like their declarations of love came a little out of nowhere. Really though I did love them as a couple. For all his attitude and snark Ivo really does want someone to love him for him. He wants the stable relationship and all that goes with it. But he's also not willing to sacrifice who he is for it. He needs the man he falls in love with to love him for himself, high heeled boots and all.

Ruan grew up hiding who he really was and still isn't all that comfortable with being out. As a detective he's seen the worst of what that can bring. Someone as bold as Ivo scares him a bit as even though intellectually he knows it's ok, internally he still struggles not to worry about someone that bold and in your face. But he still loves the man and is determined to get over his fears. Together these two were just so sweet. And well Rhys has a big monster of a cat that I just wanted to smooth my face into, so I was happy.

I love Rhys Ford's writing and have yet to meet any of her men I don't like. This was another solid story and I hope the rest of the brothers get their happily ever afters soon.

I absolutely adore this series and the five brothers that make up the found family that is 415 Ink. Ivo, "a complicated macrame of masculine strength and feminine beauty", has to be my favorite. His unabashedly eclectic style is something we see Ruan grapple with. I love how Ruan is open about his conflict and how Ivo doesn't easily cut him any slack.

The way the conflict is addressed is so very satisfying for me. Ruan has "stupid questions" and Ivo is patient with explaining his point of view and why he dresses the way he does. While Ivo can understand Ruan's position, he doesn't compromise his identity and the way he expresses himself just to make things more comfortable for Ruan. And Ruan doesn't resent Ivo's position at all. Ruan acknowledges that he is the one with the problem, not Ivo, and it's something he has to work through.

Spot, "the marmalade monster" was a delight. Ford brings such a personality to him, and I loved every scene he was in.

It was lovely to revisit the other four brothers, and the teaser for Lucas' story has me chomping at the bit for his book.

3.5 stars!!

I was interested about Ivo's story since book one but I was a bit disappointed. Of course the story is good but there was a lot of descriptions and explaining that I just had to skip a lot of the story.

Maybe I wasn't in the right mindset, but I felt like this story was dragging a lot.

And then the last page was introducing us to Luke which got me interested, so hopefully I enjoy the next one!! Can't wait for that one!

Another winner in this series. Rhys Ford writes some of the most engaging characters in contemporary MM romance. Damaged, loving, fierce, and completely unapologetic.

Crackling dialogue, found/forged (of steel) family and a pretty cool Maine Coon.

4.5 stars rounded up

Update 07/25/2021 : Listened to the audiobook that finally released after so much time. Thoughts are pretty much the same. It was nice to see this family again and I hope that it means the next book won't be too long in coming. Narration by Kale Williams was excellent.

I am a big fan of this author and loved the first two books of this series. The brothers of 415 Ink are amazing men who have come through hell and found family with each other and are living fairly successful lives. Ivo was a character that I really wanted to know more about. His mix of masculinity and femininity when he dressed and his scorching sarcasm when it came to his older brothers made me wonder why he embraced the dual looks and what exactly made him so jaded.

To be fair, I did know that he was raised many years in foster care and before that one of his older brothers tried to harm him and his mother wasn't more than a conniving addict and abuser. His biological brother Gus, whose story was first in this series, seemed to have it worse because he was more cognizant due to their ages. But it is evident that Ivo has seen his share of sorrow, several foster families, and his fight to stay with his brothers when Chidlren's Protective Services took him away every time he had trouble with school. It did give him a bit of a protective bitter shell, and it also made him feel like he might never be worth the love. Ivo as an adult has found a sense of confidence though it is clear he and his brothers sometimes have shaky faith in it. Ivo wears what he wants to suit his mood and because others aren't able to. He loves art and creates his own on other people's skin. He also has a police officer on his mind after he was shown concern a few years back.

Ruan once met a teenager wearing a school girl skirt and killer heels and worried the young man might not be safe at home. His concern stayed with Ivo, but Ivo stayed with Ruan as well. Ivo was everything Ruan was not; brave and out. Ruan doesn't let too many people see the real him. Good old Catholic guilt and the things he has seen as a police officer hold him back from being an out gay man. He can't even contemplate the idea of wearing flamboyant clothes without worrying about what might be done. As a police detective he reenters Ivo's life and he is still intrigued, enough to want to meet up with Ivo on their off time, and to maybe see where this attraction might go.

Due to Ivo's somewhat defensive attitude and Ruan's worried nature, I thought that there would be a lot more sparks (good and bad) to go along with their fledgling relationship. And Ruan does screw up once or twice, to be sure. But I honestly felt that their romance was smooth and fairly easy going. Both of them have busy schedules and very late nights at work. It makes them appreciate the time they have together. Both Ivo and Ruan are also very willing to look into themselves and consider what they say and work on their actions if needed. And they are considerate of the others feelings as long as it doesn't involve trying to make each other into different people. Their journeys through life this far have given them a maturity that make them a little different from the characters in the first two stories.

Like other Rhys novels, this book has its share of cameos from Rhys's other characters. A location from the Murder and Mayhem series is mentioned and what a happy surprise learning that Ruan's precinct is where Donal Morgan works from. I love the tie ins for sure. I really enjoyed this third book in this series, and am dying to find out more about the enigmatic Luke and the responsible and loving Bear. I can't recommend this series enough.

Loved It!

I’ve been anticipating Ivo’s story since Rhys Ford introduced the brothers of the 415 Ink series. Ivo is the unique, brash, and unapologetic youngest of the patchwork family. He’s a lot of personality and I was hoping whoever fell in love with him would be up to the task of loving him without dulling his sparkle. Ruan Nicholls is older and more reserved for sure, but he’s drawn to Ivo like a moth to a flame. He wants Ivo but he first needs to come to terms with Ivo’s truth before he’s worthy of his affection.

Rhys Ford is so great with character growth. In this book we learn more about Ivo’s past and how it shaped who he is. Readers of the series know Ivo as confident and cocky, but in Hellion we get to see his vulnerability. Ruan’s character experienced so much growth. He’s a detective so he’s sharp and assertive, and he’s also closed off and has few real relationships in his life besides his partner and his landlord. He knows he must tread outside his comfort zone to be with Ivo so he does a lot of self-reflection and works on it. He screws up and learns from it, adjusting his notions in order to forge a relationship with Ivo. I was glad that Ivo didn’t make it easy for Ruan when he stumbled. True to form, Ivo held his ground even if it hurt.

As with the first two books, I thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic banter between the brothers. They bust on each other mercilessly one minute and act like overprotective hens the next. I can’t wait to read Luke’s story, which will be the fourth installment of 415 Ink.

《🔫👤 4 stars 👠👠》

Another great addition to the series. I was intrigued about Ivo’s story after reading Mace’s book. He was definitely a peculiar character within the brothers.

We left the last book, Savior , with Detective Ruan Nicholls informing Mace of his father’s death and it’s like this how Hellion begins, thought he have a little “prologue” which let’s us know how Ivo and the detective met years ago.

𝕀𝕍𝕆 can’t believe he met his cop again after all these years. At first, he doesn’t think he recognizes him but Ruan remembers Ivo for sure. That’s why he gives him his card and tells Ivo to give him a call any day. Later ℝ𝕌𝔸ℕ wonders what he was thinking. He wasn’t hitting on him! (As his partner Maite points out) He just wanted to know how he had been. He doesn’t want to date.

Good thing Ivo takes the lead and calls him one night to meet for a late-night dinner. Their journey starts like that, both of them trying to conciliate the image they kept of the other from years ago with the actual person.
Ruan Nicholls definitely knew how to love. Maybe grudgingly so, but it was there.
Ruan realizes Ivo is not the brat he thought he was, well…maybe a bit. Seeing the relationship with his brothers, how they care for Ivo makes him kind of envious. He has a safety net whit them, where he can be . He never had that. He never had a family that accepted him as he truly was—raised by his catholic grandmother and liking men wasn’t easy. He always lived in fear of how people would react to him being gay. Ivo with all his 𝓌𝑒𝒾𝓇𝒹𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈 and brass defies that existence still, he can’t seem to let go of him.
I need to be better. And I know that I should be better for myself, but I just want you near me—with me—while I try.”
The 𝓫𝓲𝓰 𝓽𝓮𝓼𝓽 comes early in their relationship with Ivo’s way of dressing. Sometimes is hard to break out of the box you’ve been living in. Luckily, they get pass this misstep talking about how they feel and this becomes a pattern for them. I loved that! After this their relationship becomes more domestic, you could say. Maybe there’s not too much drama like in Mace’s story but I didn’t have a problem with that. I liked to see how they grow together and got to feel comfortable with each other to the point of sharing the demons they carried along. They complement each other.
Don’t let go of me. Whatever you do, Ivo…just don’t let go, because I sure as hell am always going to hold on to you.”
Ivo’s story was heartbreaking. No child should experience what he went through. We find the reason behind the famous heels. At the same time, we get to know Ruan’s point of view. How was for him being gay in a different time, he’s not old but things were pretty different then. It made me think about the hardships people had to deal with—and still deal nowadays—to be who they really are.
I don’t think they know what it’s like to live with that kind of fear. I don’t think people understand how hard it is for some of us. How scared we were…how scared we are.”
Even though Ivo’s brothers act like a meddling family, grant part of this series charm is how family is more than blood and how it acts as a support system… with annoying brothers . In Ivo’s case, he being the baby of the family makes him their target. And there was an incident in the past…I liked how Ruan ended up being a part of that group.
I want to share my family with you, Ruan, so you know what it’s like to live in the middle of a bunch of crazy people who love you.”
I have to thank the side characters: Cranson, Maite and Spot (the cat).

Being sincere; I’d have liked to see more about Ruan’s job in terms of action. Maybe it’s the romantic-suspense lover in me who knows…

One last thing I’d like to mention, I don’t know if I missed something—I don’t think so but—at the beginning of the book when Ruan was doubting to have anything to do with Ivo, he talked a few times about “having the blood of someone he cared about caked beneath his fingernails”. I never read again about whom this person was or why this affected Ruan.

Anyway, all in all I enjoyed their story a lot . And that ending! I feel Luke’s book is going to be intense. So far I’m not liking this James guy. How long will I have to wait?

3 1/2 I was expecting a bit more tension, but this was a remarkably undemanding and sweet read. A few loose ends and continuity errors, though.

I absolutely love Ivo with snarkiness and awesome fashion sense. Ruan is a perfect match for him.

Crap, now I have to wait for Luke and Bear's stories...

The third story of the 415 Ink boys is the youngest of Bear (Barrett)'s clan of brothers. It starts out with Ivo, flexing his need for independence and a bit of defiance, sneaks out of his brother Luke's bedroom window wearing a short Catholic girl's skirt, a white button down from his bother Mace's closet, and the glittering red high heels he finally fit into for a night of dancing at a local club. As he left the club to grab something to eat and catch the last bus home, some guy thought Ivo was an easy mark to give him a blow job. What the jerk didn't count on was Ivo's ability to defend himself. Now Ivo was cooling his heels (literally and figuratively) by the police sorting out what happened, when one ruggedly handsome police officer came over and treated him as a whole person. It was refreshing and it shocked Ivo how much this ten years older cop pushed all of the right buttons. Officer Ruan Nicholls was taken aback by Ivo Rogers. He felt as if he were being tested with everything Ivo was: young, gorgeous, and comfortable with just who he was. Nothing Ruan could be, as he guarded his sexuality like a hawk, even as a San Francisco cop. He just needed to get this kid safely home and run the other way.

Fate has a way of leading you back to temptation--and it happened one day when Ruan had to deliver some bad news to Mace. When Ivo was alone with the Ruan, he gave him his card, and asked to call him to explain the red heels from about ten years ago. Both Ivo and Ruan were attracted to each other--Ivo even had dreams about the officer--even better looking now than ever. The call gets placed and the journey begins with Ruan coming to grips with his deeply constructed facade so he would not appear to be gay, and Ivo being the out and proud man he is.

This not quite May-December romance (that is 11 years age difference) has Ruan rethinking what he knows to be a homosexual man in today's terms. Ivo knows there may be some issues, but they both decide to take the plunge--though with Ruan's schedule, it's a bit like dating the wind, but Ivo and Ruan take the chance and discover many things about themselves and each other. Where Ivo is confident-Ruan is not it leads to a painful decision they both must take.

I love Ivo's story of romance, and Ruan's story of self discovery. A cameo is made by Ruan's captain, who happens to be Donal Morgan of the Sinner's Series which was a delightful surprise. Another surprise is that there is no one chasing and trying to kill the main characters in this book!!! For those of you looking for a Rhys's mystery or a thriller story, you'll not find it here, but you'll be happy with the nice tapestry of the latest in the 415 Ink series, with no dead bodies to wrap it in.

My set list for this book was, or may seem eclectic.
Sweater Weather - The Neighborhood -- I imagined this song when Ivo was sitting on the police car while Ruan got his statement.

I'm Worth It - Fifth Harmony feat. Kid Ink - Ivo to Ruan--to look and accept what Ivo is, because he is indeed worth it.

I Loved You Before I Met You - Savage Garden - When Ivo mentioned he felt a string attraction to the rugged Ruan as he approached on the night of the opening sequence

This Is Me - Keala Settle from the Greatest Showman - Awesome song that makes no apologies for who they are -- i can picture Ivo singing this one.

I'll Wait by the Strombellas - to mark the split and the waiting for the answer.

Whenever Wherever by Shaikra - this one just popped into my head when Ivo opened the book.

Note: I requested and was given an advanced copy to review.

Enjoy!
