Le regard droit, le corps arqué, elle conduisait une moto, une grosse cylindrée aux flancs de laquelle avait été dessinée une tête de mort accompagnée d’un écriteau singulier : N.D. dite Kalamity Djane."
À Natingou City, ville montagneuse dans le nord du Bénin, trois personnages singuliers, répliques parfaites des caractères du Far West, tiennent sous leur joug la population par leurs actes excentriques. Un vacher bagarreur, un inspecteur de police teigneux et un homme d’affaires, desperado amorphe et vif à la fois. Apparaît soudain une jeune femme vengeresse donnée pour morte dans des circonstances fort troubles, Nafissatou Diallo, sous le nom de Kalamity Djane, pistolet au poing, annonçant bien haut dans le mythique "Saloon du Desperado" son désir, sa décision irrévocable d’abattre les trois terreurs.
Après le western américain, le western-spaghetti, voici donc la spécialité béninoise : le western qui joue d’une arme de destruction passive alcoolisée : le western tchoukoutou.

Around-the-world #197: Benin 🇧🇯.
A very original novel, merging the Western genre and the locale of Benin, resulting in a "Beer Western" (tchoukoutou being the local beer in Benin). With characters called Cow-Boy (a shepherd), Chérif (a police inspector) and Desperado (owner of the local bar), who need to confront a woman assumed dead, but who came back to avenge herself under the name Kalamity Djane. Highly complex French, with a mix of local Beninese words, general argot (slang) and a preference for the more complicated vocabulary.
Somehow, the book could have been longer to flesh out the story, provide more background story, but as it is, it is a high-paced crazy adventure.

This completes my reading novels set in all 197 countries in the world (all 193 UN members, plus Vatican 🇻🇦, Kosovo 🇽🇰, Taiwan 🇹🇼 and Palestine 🇵🇸).

Je neemt het skelet van een goede spaghettiwestern en teleporteert dat naar Benin. In plaats van Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson en Henry Fonda neem je drie Beninese protagonisten en dan voeg je daar nog een op wraak beluste Calamity Jane - in dit geval Kalamity Djane - aan toe... et voilà... alle ingrediënten voor een succulente "Western tchoukoutou" zijn aanwezig. Overgoten met een zeer mysterieus sausje, staat dit garant voor leesplezier, zeker als het geheel dan ook nog eens geschreven is in een vlotte stijl, boordevol met leuke zinswendingen en pittige dialogen.
Florent Couao-Zotti mag er wezen en dit smaakt naar meer.

This would have been a quick read if not for the fact that the French was quite advanced and a little beyond my capabilities. I did learn a good few new words but I do wish I had to look up fewer things, it was a little disruptive to the reading flow.

This is a story as old as time, a tale of murder and revenge, but I still found it quite interesting and it certainly evoked the feeling of an american western.
