Not another romance with an adult and a high schooler!! These age gaps just keep getting bigger...

Honestly it was kind of cute, but like I can't do another one of these. At least this time the girl is a third year instead of a first year, but nah. It escalated so quickly too. I thought it was going to be more of a slow burn, with more messaging back and forth, but they met and announced they liked each other so quickly. And honestly her being a high school student adds literally nothing to the plot besides a tiny bit of drama and unnecessary conflict that is quickly disregarded. She could've easily been a college student, but I guess that's not risque enough. Anyway moving on! I probably won't pick up the next volume.

there's potential, but the whole time i just couldnt figure out why they would even like each other? they just met and this 29 yo wrestler kissed this 17 yo kid in the cheek all of a sudden. felt like taking advantage of a fan if i do say so myself. they dont even know each other, at all. then at their 2nd/3rd encounter, he asked her to marry him? WTF. this was as insta as it gets, and i'm allergic to those

A professional wrestling heel and one of his fans flirt through social media and there seems to be a real spark between them. Then a cute romantic start takes a sudden right turn into age gap territory, but at least the story seems to be addressing that controversy head-on instead of just presenting it as something that makes sense. So I'm interested to see where they might be going next.

In stories like this, I always get a paranoid suspicion that the translators or English editors might be tweaking things a bit for an American audience and wonder what the ages of the couple are in the original Japanese.

And I do have a quibble with them constantly referring to the male lead as a gorilla, when he has a fairly generic handsome or even baby face. If you want a true gorilla type, check out one of my all-time favorite manga, My Love Story!!, Vol. 1.

This is a lighthearted romance between Kuga, a professional wrestler, and Momoka, his fan.

She’s always cheered for him whenever he has a fight so they share some tweets, and end up meeting. He instantly falls in love with her, despite being so young.

Actually, I would have rated this higher but I just can’t stand the fact that they have more than 10 years between them –and she’s a minor. Kuga-san is 29 and she’s 17 at the moment, so yeah. Not a big fan of age gaps.

I mean, they’re cute together and I kinda have a crush on Kuga, but even if she’s seen as “more mature than her age”, I would have liked better if she were at least in college.

Also, as a wrestling fan, I was expecting to see more detailed fights but unfortunately is heavier on the fluffy romance.

I know I’ll keep reading the series because I really liked Kuga-san but I can’t rate it higher simply because I’m quite not OK with huge age-gaps.

Read if for the #MiniMangaReadathon.

This isn't a very promising beginning. The romantic situation the author sets up feels much more troubling than romantic, almost entirely because of the eleven year age gap between the leads--the girl being the younger one, of course. They keep communicating with each other when they really, really shouldn't, and their justification for doing so boils down to "I'm into her/him." Add art that's decent, but nothing special, and I wouldn't blame anyone--including myself--for not wanting to continue.

My partner, whose book this is, told me the second volume is better, and he isn't wrong. More in my review for that one.

This is just so cute. It's also an odd combination of insta-love and a slow burn romance, but that works well to highlight the awkwardness of the characters' relationship, which gets even more awkward when Kuga realizes that Momoka is still in high school. I really appreciate the way that he has to process that - it doesn't ignore the fact that dating an of-age high schooler could turn out badly for his career and the large emotional distance between 18 and 29, but it also doesn't put a quick stop to the romance plot. If there's a healthy way to depict this kind of romance in fiction, Yuhi Azumi may have hit on it here, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

2020 Read #643

I was expecting My Love Story for older shojo readers, but — that age gap!! Eleven years!! And the girl is only eighteen! No, no, no! That is not okay! I do like Momoka as the heroine, but I just don’t see why she would want to be with Kuga (since he doesn’t have much of a personality this first volume). From the cover alone, I was hoping this would be a relationship between a hoodlum-like high schooler and a cute popular girl, so maybe I should have just made up my own story instead of buying this...

These two were so fking cute together I could just die!!!

But Momoka is living the fangirl life she has her fave wrestler Kuga smitten with her as she is with him. They meet exchange numbers and few tweets.. its cute start to their friendship/relationship. But the drama is now about the age gap between the two. I can't wait to read Vol 2

Low angst, Drama, slight secondary character

DNF at 80%. He’s 29, she’s still in high school and 18. Heck no. Yes, I know there are May-November romances out there, but they honestly shouldn’t be encouraged. 1, the artwork and story isn’t enough for me to keep reading past the 11 year age gap, stars.

Momoka is a huge pro wrestling fan, and her absolute favorite is Kuga, a big and burly heel (bad guy). Kuga is 29 and used to most of his fans being male, so he's pleased when a female fan keeps cheering him on on Twitter. Momoka finally gets the courage to go to one of his matches, and the two meet in person afterward and hit it off. The problem? Kuga assumed she was in her twenties, and Momoka is actually an 18-year-old high school student.

This was okay, I guess. The author didn't go the predictable route and have Momoka lie to Kuga about her age, or turn the age difference into a big misunderstanding stretched over multiple volumes. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the route the author took instead was all that much better. It was awfully sudden.

Their Twitter and few in-person interactions were nice - I was reflexively going to say "cute," but there wasn't really enough to justify using that word. I'm still not sure how I feel about Momoka's habit of crying whenever she got overexcited, but I liked Kuga's efforts to help her calm down. I think I'd have liked the volume a little more if it hadn't been for the ending, although the sudden appearance of was reassuring.

As far as the artwork went, I really wasn't a fan. The facial expressions, in particular, seemed off, and there were times the character anatomy bugged me as well.

I wish I knew how long this series was going to be. With the way things are going, it feels like this could wrap up pretty quickly and neatly, but who knows?

Extras:

A one-page thank you from the author.

i don't mind age gaps in romance but there's something wrong when it's between a 17-year-old (minor) girl and a 29-year-old man. like don't bother making it romantic or aesthetic because it's just pedophilia at the end of the day, and we don't care if the girl is "more mature than her age", that's still a child and the dude can go to jail.

why not make her a college student? they can also experience fluffy romance even when they are already adults!

NEW FAVORITE SERIES ALERT!!

I love this series with so much of my being it is not even funny! Kuga is the best depiction of a cinnamon roll hero I have read in a while, and I can't wait to see how this story continues!

You can watch me fangirl about it in this video!

A super fluffy shoujo manga about a pro-wrestler, and his high-school super fan / girlfriend. The squick factor wasn't too high, since they didn't do too much except act like love-struck teenagers (particularly for 29-year-old Kuga!). I don't know what else to say except I suspect that the story will end up being as superficial as the first few volumes.

This was super cute but I have reservations! I just struggle with anyone in high school. Kinda bleh.

This one features
- pro wrestler hero
- hero owns a bunny!
- heroine is a wrestling fan
- heroine is a high school student (but is 18)
- instalove
- age gap - hero is 29 and heroine is 18 (and still in high school)

These two get to know each other on social media and Kuga doesn't know anything about Momoka. They begin to talk and meet and Kuga starts to fall for her. Of course ends on a cliffy. Great graphics and overall a fun read!

Not only is it wholesome, but I know just how big the age gap is. The last couple of these kind of mangas have made me really cherish and value that.

This did not need to be an age gap romance. I repeat: THIS DID NOT NEED TO BE AN AGE GAP ROMANCE. There are so many ways this story could have been written without a high schooler having to be in a relationship with a 29-year-old man and nothing would have been different (besides the plot of the whole first volume no longer needing to center on THIS MAN TRYING TO DECIDE IF HE SHOULD DATE A HIGH SCHOOLER OR NOT).

I was going to read the second volume of this anyway because I already checked it out from the library, but the author including another adult character telling Kuga how inappropriate this relationship would be and to stop contacting her immediately and then ALLOWING HIS MIND TO BE CHANGED BY THE HIGH SCHOOLER BASICALLY THROWING A TEMPER TANTRUM totally destroyed any and all interest I had left. As an actual 29-year-old, I’m disturbed by the choices that were made both in the book and by the author writing it.

If you’re looking for a cute fluffy story about a pretty girl dating a strong, burly guy, just read My Love Story!! by Kazune Kawahara and Aruko. Not only is it a great classic series, but it’s got AGE APPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIPS HAPPENING. I mean, COME ON.

I don't really have much to say about this. I can't deny it's cute, but I do not believe that protraying a realtionship between a 18 year old still in high school (who is just a child with an adult label) and a grown 29/30 year old man. That is not okay in any circumstance (even with what happens in the 2nd volume). Normalizing this is very, very dangerous.

Saw this at the bookstore today. Fell in love with the idea. I have always been a huge pro wrestling fan. (Heels are my weakness soo uh yeah right up my alley!) Well I didn't know about the age gap... I can't stomach this. As someone who works with middle and high schoolers, this is dangerous territory! The couple connects through twitter... Nothing wrong with fan interactions but uhhh when it becomes romantic between an 18 year old and a 29 year old! No thank you! This is glorifying something that scars people for life. I thought that it was going to be a girl falling for a wrestling trainee... Her own age! Not her actually dating a full grown man she is a fan of! Now don't get me wrong... Teenage me would have loved this book as I was a huge fan of Roman Reigns if only he would have replied to my tweets ya know? But uhhh no please don't glorify something people go to jail for! I do appreciate her not lying about her age though!

This was cute!

Though I'm unsure if I'll LOVE the series, I definitely LOVED how much I could relate to Momoka! As someone who met their significant other while in high school and facing that same "looming" age gap and others perception on that, it can indeed lead to heartbreak. Thankfully, my husband and I stayed together despite what others said and are very happily married of 10 years. Due to my own personal experience, I really enjoyed that aspect of the story and seeing the struggle handled so well (and accurately).

I was a little unsure of how I would feel because at the beginning it felt like things went slightly fast, but it's implied I think that they have been messaging back and forth for quite some time? I was sort of surprised by the ending, but it was sweet.

I definitely like the pro wrestling aspect! That's something different in manga and was a fun aspect. Kuga is definitely VERY sweet!

Looking forward to diving into the second volume!

I usually don't mind age gaps, but this one somewhat bothers me.

Not because she is 17 (turning 18) and he is 29 per say, but because she is a 17 (turning 18) high school student while he is a 29 year old professional wrestler. Literally I wouldn't mind if she was a freshman in college, but she isn't. She hasn't even graduated high school yet.

I would have found this a lot more endearing if she was in college, but instead I feel almost uncomfortable reading about them.

The age gap is the main issue I have. And the fact that OTHER CHARACTERS ARE AWARE OF IT just pushed it over the edge for me. I honestly won't be finishing this series because of it.
