****Trigger Warning Needed*****
Till The Sun Dies was a very good but hard read. I was very conflicted between my rational head and my soft heart.
No woman deserves to be used, abused and subjected to acts of sexual depravity, including being raped. No means no. No argument.
When I got to the 21% of this story and I read the direction Emilia Finn was taking this a conflict between my head and heart began and I truly think that the author needs to put a better warning of how graphic this becomes at this point. Not just a comment that it contains "dark topics" There are no punches pulled when vengeance is taken and the method of payback is horrifically "visual".
There were "snippets" of what Laine suffered at the hands of Graham her so called boy friend but I thought Emilia Finn needed to expand/explain this more and help the reader to understand exactly what Laine went through and why she didn't fight back.
The writing is strong and so is the plot BUT a warning is needed so that you are prepared for what you are about to read.
It took Laine a long time (too long in fact) to realise that Graham was an unhappy coward and that her life was truly good. She had the love of a good family and eventually the love of a good man.

This was book 2 in the
"Checkmate"
series. This was a good emotional read Ang & Laine have both been through a lot. Ang gives her the strength to get through all the crap from her past. Jess, Kane, and the rest of her family. Ang is such an amazing person for doing everything it took to help the person who he loves the most overcome the hardest thing that has happened to her. I loved the emotional rollercoaster ride that this book took me on. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

This series and book is going on my all-time vault.
I am almost at a loss for words. This story showed the power of love. It heals and restores us. Laine sure needed it and I couldn't have picked a better guy to help her. Ang was truly an angel. Every step he did had one purpose and that was to make her heal, smile, feel safe, and to finally show her he was there when she was ready.
Fantastic interactions with Kane and Jess. Laugh out loud moments between these four were hilarious, hell even the ones between Kane and Ang were hilarious. Add in some of the most heartbreaking and healing conversations that could only come from their twin bond and ugly teary.
Honestly, this book cannot even be described in here words.It was an experience that every reader dreams of finding. The author did an amazing job and taking it sloe, without making it drag on, and let these characters heal. There was no instant, I'm better now, " and instead worked it the way it needed to be. The anticipation was killing me. I was rooting for these guys. When it finally happened much later in the book, I didn't care that it had taken that long. Because, it was beautiful and special.

You won't be lost having not read it but it enhances this story so much.plus you get to see how much Kane has changed all for his Jess which then pours over on Laine. Bottom line, this is in my top books of 2020, and it's only January. I'm a huge fan of this author now.

Good but Book 1 was better
This was a good emotional ride but depressing. It was good to see Laine overcome what she went through, however we never know the extent of it because it's not told in detail.
Angelo, goodness can he be more perfect? He is so in love with Kaine and help her pull through even though it hurts him in the process.

Fantastic.
This book was a phenomenal read. It’s emotional, gut wrenching, powerful and empowering. This book touches you in ways that aren’t even prepared for. It touches on some pretty dark themes that aren’t always easy to incorporate into book series but Emilia Finn handles it not only incredibly well, but in a way that is believable as well. Laine and Ang’s story is a whirlwind of emotions in the best way possible. Emilia has a way with words and a way with making us fall in love with new characters every time she pushes out a new character.

Tigger... sexual assault/abuse and suicidal behavior
Slow burn and drawn out story line.
I’m really torn on what rating to give this. Although it was a great story and an excellent healing process it still fell flat for me. I tended to skim so much of the “road trip” as it was boring and dull reading. I wanted to really give this one a strong rating but just couldn’t.
So...this author tends to be extremely repetitive in her writing...with the FC talking through her suicidal thoughts I started to get annoyed...either do it or don't...she repeated the same thoughts over and over...it was really annoying for me.
I do not take these thoughts in a light way at all...please do not read my review as I didn't care about her thinking of suicidal thoughts and how hard the decision is to actually take that plunge as I truly felt for the FC and what traumatic circumstances she went through.
I am only discussing the repetition of the author's writing. I did skip over much of her thoughts but will not affect my rating at this point. I'm hoping the author knocks the repetition out already.
Ok – I still really hate the twin, Jessica. I hated her in the first book and I really hate her in this one. She is allowing her twin to “snuggle” with her in bed after waking her up (due to FC nightmare) while she is naked with her live-in boyfriend who is also naked…umm no…go to her room you perv.
The twin and the boyfriend are babying the FC. Again…really don’t like Jessica. The MC however, is handling the FC so much better than the sister. He is making progress where the sister is allowing her to continue to hide farther in her shell. That sister needs to go. She is doing more harm than good.
I really appreciate how the author did take the time to show how the affects of the sexual assault and abuse can take a toll on one’s mind. I was impressed with how the author walked the reader through her ordeal and steps on her healing journey.
I felt this was a little dragged out for me. I was getting to the point of skimming over many parts. Normally for me this would be an automatic 2 star deduction but seeing I understand why the author drawn out the story as in reality this would be an honest situation, I look pass my normal deduction review. When it came to the “road trip” Ugh…boring.
I’m publishing this review with about 100 pages to go. There is no way for the rating to go any hire for me at this point. I am skimming the entire end and I am really bored at this couple. Both of them are holding back and neither the twin or her boyfriend are truly helping this along. Seriously the FC did not have a strong support system in those two.

A perfect slow burn, friends to lovers, continuation of the Check ate series. This series is fast becoming my obsession! I simply love these characters, and while I loved and was invested in Laine and Angelo, Kane and Jess’s major supporting characterizations were a perfect addition and added so much depth, humor and heart to this book. Finally we get to see why it’s called the Checkmate series too! The heartbreaking things that Laine and Ang have endured are so difficult, duet dealt with in a very courageous way. I really enjoyed this book and loving this series!

First of all, I'd like to say that a trigger warning never hurt anyone. I went into this knowing what I'll face, all the dark moments and the graphic scenes. But not everyone does so, trigger warnings; suicide attempt, mention of rape and graphic scenes of violence.
Other than that, I'd like to say that I loved this book. It was pretty intense and emotional and what Laine went through....It broke my heart in so many ways, at some point I couldn't read, I had to take a break.
What Laine and Angelo have, it's a story of healing, a story of true love, of always being there for your person, no matter how difficult it is, no matter the pain and the darkness. Laine is one of the strongest characters I've ever read about, and Angelo is the most sweet and caring; his past really shaped him into the person he is and I really, truly love and respect him. They fit perfectly together.
Kane and Jess!!! Jesus Christ, they are amazing. I couldn't stop smiling, laughing and wanting to reread their book. I have no words to describe how much I love them!

This book involves some really dark themes such as sexual abuse and depravity as well as attempted suicide. I did not know this going in so I definitely want you to know because you read. There sadly was no warning of triggers.
Laine's ex was truly just an awful person. IO thought Angelo was a great match for her because he wanted to help her heal and feel safe. Laine need that in her life and she deserved it.
I appreciated that process that Laine had to go through to heal. It shows a genuine struggle to heal from sexual assault and all of the thoughts that go through the survivor/victim's mind. I thought the journey was realistic as healing does not occur overnight, no matter how great the new man in your life might be, you will truly struggle to feel safe and protected.
Angelo truly showed up for Laine and showed her the care that a really man would have in a relationship, instead of the toxic relationship she had in the past. There was moments of laughter and banter that helped to lessen some of the emotional turmoil that you feel.
Audrey Obeyn and Dane Anderson did an amazing job of showing the feelings and turmoil the characters were dealing with and kept you invested in the story. Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing/Brilliance Audio for the early access to this audiobook. All of my opinions are my own.

This romance is all about the slow burn and it quite a longish book. Angelo has loved Laine for many years. They are really good friends and he doesn't want to jeopardize that. In the previous book Laine was badly hurt, both mentally and physically and this story is really a follow on from that one. The H/h from the previous book also star as side characters, so we learn more about them. There are also many family members from a couple of previous series (which I haven't read), appearing.
There are uncomfortable scenes near the beginning which may be triggers for some. There are lots of fun scenes but this book is still heavily dramatic with some dark scenes that include blood and revenge. I would say to understand this story best, that you read book one in the series first. If you don't want to do that, it can be read as a stand alone re the H/h's story as many background details are explained - so it is a spoiler for the first book. I enjoyed this one and didn't want to put it down, but I did enjoy Pawns in the Bishop's Game slightly more (it's dark - very dark).

I absolutely love the writing style and the personality of the characters but I definitely had some issues with the way the MMC referred to the FMCs trauma. He very much idolised her past self and it was like he was waiting for her to get over her trauma and be that person again not love her as she is.

Really loved this one. It touches on very heavy topics, but Emilia Finn did a magnificent job with portraying the trauma AND the recovery. I think the only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I wanted more of Laine and Ang. But honestly, the slow burn and the process of healing was so worth the ending.

Worth the Wait
This book has some heavy topics and you have to wait a long time for the characters to finally realize they are into each other but good grief this book was so good. Very sweet like the two new characters introduced. I can’t wait to dive into the third.

Amazing
You have done it again Emilia. Just when I think you couldn’t possibly write a better book, here comes another. I loved all the others, but this one is amazing, with hard topics, and real people. Love it! Well done!

So the only reason why I am docking my stars down to 4.5/5 is because the entire story line surrounded the FMC’s suicide attempt and recovery.. And there’s nothing wrong with that.. but it kind of got to be a little repetitive. I’m sorry if that’s insensitive, but i’m being honest.
The first book in this series is probably one of my favorite books of all time and the couple from that book were in this one a ton, so heck yeah!
I really like this small town world and the characters in it so I will definitely continue to read on.

So the only reason why I am docking my stars down to 4.5/5 is because the entire story line surrounded the FMC’s suicide attempt and recovery.. And there’s nothing wrong with that.. but it kind of got to be a little repetitive. I’m sorry if that’s insensitive, but i’m being honest.
The first book in this series is probably one of my favorite books of all time and the couple from that book were in this one a ton, so heck yeah!
I really like this small town world and the characters in it so I will definitely continue to read on.

This book was totally not what I expected, even for the queen of “blow you away” reads, Till The Sun Dies is one of Emilia Finn’s most emotionally powerful books. Laine and Ang’s story is almost painfully raw. Emilia Finn captures the devastating emotions that they experience so perfectly with her writing you are guaranteed to go through an entire box of tissues at the start. Especially if you’re like me and have been reading her books since the Rollers.
I am so attached to every last one of these characters and that combined with Emilia Finn’s ability to move your soul with her words is the perfect storm of hitting you in the feels. Don’t let my ugly cry warning make you think you’re not going to get the fun, swoon, and heat we all love though because this is Ang and Laine we’re talking about here. For every tissue I tossed while cursing Emilia for making me cry I also cracked up at something or fanned myself or fell in love with this giant group of lovable lunatics all over again.
Ang is by far one of the sweetest and most patient heroes ever. Gentle when Laine needed it, a hero when Laine needed one, a friend and ultimately the man who loves her the way she deserves to be loved. He was freaking everything. His quiet love was more powerful than the loudest explosion in the world.

Emilia is one of my favorite authors and she didn't disappoint when it came to this book. I knew going into this book that it was going to be heavy and incredibly heart wrenching but DAMN it was so much more than that. Ang & Laine's story by far is the most emotional story that Emilia has written. I read this book in one sitting and was left so raw and happy at the end. This book is a rollercoaster to get through. Laine is so strong for getting herself out of that pit of despair with all of the love and support she has from Ang, Jess, Kane, and the rest of her family. Ang is such an amazing person for doing everything it took to help the person who he loves the most overcome the hardest thing that has happened to her. Their story & development were written so amazingly well. Although I hate Graham and wish he had never really been in the book, that scene in the beginning was gold and felt so damn good to read. Thank you Emilia for writing a story that focuses so heavily on mental illness, depression, suicide, and abuse. It is so rare to find that as such a focal point in a romance novel, it was done exceptionally well. And when I didn't think I was going to cry anymore, the author's note just tipped me over the edge again. So beautifully written.

Emilia Finn did it again. I love the slow burn which allows for healing. For me the best part was seeing Kane again. I love that man. Many times I found myself laughing at Kane and Angelo's conv and friendship.

Dual Narration Audio - both narrators did a great job letting their emotion come through the narration, I definitely felt for the characters (ESPECIALLY Laine).
This one started out SO strong! With the way book one ended, I just had to know how Laine's story was going to develop and where it was going to end. We don't get a whole lot of Angelo in book one so I wasn't really sure what to expect.
What I got... A GLACIAL BURN. SO. FRICKING. GLACIAL. We get to around halfway through the book and FMC internal monologue is "I THINK I have a crush on my brother's best friend" THINK?! THINK. My diamond painting took damage at this point I was like WHAT DO YOU MEAN THINK?! Like I can completely understand her not wanting to get into anything physical after what we see her going through in book one and seeing what she's still dealing with at the beginning of this one but like.... can you two PLEASE just be honest with each other?! You have no problem sharing your feelings/issues with Jess and Bishop but tell each other? *gasp* I also don't understand the whole "she's forbidden being my best friends sister" like.... would he not WANT his best friend to get with his sister? That trope in books in general never makes sense to me - you are obviously best friends for a reason and you know each other, why would you want your sister risking it with someone else (HELLO GRAHAM)
Bishop was definitely the best character in this book too and once again Jess drove me nuts. One at the end of book one she's literally like "I can't get myself to care about Laine's pain/trauma, maybe one day" and then it takes everything that happens in the first few chapters for Jess to be like "oh yeah maybe I need to pay attention and get of Kane's dick" BUT THEN she gets Laine to live with them but doesn't seem to even TRY to be careful when it comes to her and Kane just f*cking all over the place? She knows what Laine went through and STILL doesn't really try to be that careful like she isn't worried if she ends up traumatizing Laine all over again. Although I say that and at the same time, I appreciated the way Bishop continued his crudeness throughout this book and didn't shy away from how he felt about Jess while at the same time pushing Laine to become her old self again AND get her and Angelo together.
The scene with Laine, Jess, and Kane texting in the car while Angelo drove had me CRACKING UP - again we see Kane not shying away from his crudeness but it's all in an effort to get Laine to make a move on Angelo.

This is book 2 in the checkmate series
This one follows Jessie's (previous story) twin sister Laine. This story is based on a SA victim. One where her ex boyfriend sold her to people for over 2 years. If you have triggers please do not read this story. And I hope you are safe now. If you ever need someone to talk to, vent to, be distracted etc my inbox is always open. It focuses on her healing process and we do not go into details besides her PTSD.
Laine is the youngest of the siblings. In the previous book we found out what horrible things she went through. She is traumatized and thinks she is poison to her family. He wears hoodies and sweats when it's hot and shuts herself in the guest room at Kane's house. Everyone is treating her like she may break again and try not to force her. Being around Kane and her sister and seeing their love helps but she is still terrified of everyone else. Then the shy guy who is her brother's friend and someone she's known her whole life shows up. The healing process is so hard and I'm so glad she had the support system she did.
Ang is described and someone you forget about until you need him. It hurt my heart because this man has his own demons. He has a love for cars and owns his own garage. He taught Laine when they were younger how to work on them and helped her get out of trouble all her life. He deserves so much love and I had so so so much respect for him for how he went to help Laine. Giving her the safe space and a physical goal she could work towards without her even realizing it. I love so much that he knew what she needed and what he didn't want to be. He sucks at taking hints but he has an absolute heart of gold. He does fall in the trope Touch her and 🔪 and I loved it so much. Ang is that guy that deserves all the love and support and I'm so glad he didn't lose friends over his decision to be with Laine.
My favorite part of this story is we got so much Kane and Jessie. Kane is the best big brother ever when it comes to Laine. He knew she was hurting but instead of treating her like she would break he made dirty jokes and helped her with her feelings for Ang. Kane is the real hero and it will be so hard for him to ever lose his spot in my heart.

Before diving into this review I want to point out something. TRIGGER WARNINGS HAVE NEVER HURT ANYONE. I said it before and I repeat it now, especially in this book. There's a warning in the blurb and that's it. And it's not enough. We're talking about suicidal thoughts, a very descriptive suicide attempt and also very descriptive flashbacks about what the female character suffered; an abusive relationship, rape, violence, sexual exploitation. So yeah, I'm a little mad at how this issue was handled. I love Emilia and her books, but a major warning was necessary. And not only now, I think most of her books, with exception of Bobby and Kit, need a warning as well.
Now about the book... this was a roller coaster. It broke my heart and then healed it, slowly. It was raw, emotional, powerful and empowering, all in one. Both Ang and Laine went through painful things, although we could only guess a little about Laine's story after it was introduced into the series little by little. But Ang was a mystery. And now I understand why.
I don't know how to explain it but this was so slow that you could really start to see the change in Laine's thoughts and attitude. You could feel it. You could feel how they were both healing, how their relationship was going from friends to something else, but at no time was it dragged. It was just the whole journey.
I think the only thing I didn't like was how the other characters were ignored, or better said, didn't have enough time on the page. I know that this is a new series and I understand why Kane and Jess were more present in this story (after all Laine and Jess are twins), but the friendship between the girls and the band was being told since Britt's book, more than six books back, so it felt a little weird for me that they weren’t that important or didn’t have so many interactions, idk. And also I feel like Kane was a little bit ooc.
“Why are you here, Ang?” He yanks the coat over her shoulders and glowers. “Because I love you. Because I refuse to let you waste your life. Because it matters to me that you’re happy.”

I adore Ang! He’s a great guy and his love and concern for Laine is so deep and true. She is his first priority and her feelings and thoughts are his ONLY concern. Not the love Ang has hidden from her for years or his desire to become Laine’s person. Ang just wants her happy and is selfless in this pursuit.
Laine comes a long way in this book. It’s takes a while to get there, but that’s understandable with the trauma she sustained. She slowly begins to open up and become the woman she was years before. Her therapist along with her family and friends help; however most importantly having Ang by Laine’s side making her feel safe, protected and loved help the most.
Kane and Jess are also a big part of this story. I genuinely love Kane! That man is hilarious and such a contradiction! He’s laughing and making jokes one minute and then serious and ready to kill someone in the next. Kane didn’t treat Laine any differently than he normally would and that helped her along her road to getting better. Spence is pretty funny too!
This was another book with all the feels. I laughed, worried, cried, got annoyed, felt sad - it was all there. I’m enjoying this author’s work and plan on continuing with some of her other released books.

Checkmate is becoming one of my favourite series, I’m thrilled to of found Ms Finn. If you are looking for hearts and roses, this book is not for you. Life isn’t always perfect and pretty, often it’s cruel and ugly. However, light infiltrates the dark as you read this heartbreakingly beautiful story. It’s raw, realistic and the reader is drawn in so that he or she can feel each and every emotion the author wants them to feel. I cried, swooned, laughed and smiled whilst watching Laine emerge from her cocoon in colourful glory.
Ang was patient with a quiet, gentle loving hand, he was thoughtful and deep. Laine had been used like a toy, her strings were pulled as she was manoeuvred like a puppet, isolated and raped. He’d loved her for years, but she was taboo, his friends little sister. The old Laine was gone and a scared withdrawn version stood in her place. She was living a nightmare that she couldn’t escape, her skin was crawling with the filth of unwanted touches. Laine felt an utter despair that no man would ever want the tainted girl and as everyone was moving on it would be best for her to leave. However, Ang made it his mission to remind her of all the things worth staying for.

I liked this book because Laine has gone through so much and we get glimpses of how bad it truly was. Having heard about her in previous books almost made the situation more personal. When I read about other women being victimized, I feel it, but I felt this a bit more because it was someone I had gotten to read about in other books so it felt like I "knew" her. The disbelief was there, like could this really have happened to her? This wasn't a case of a one time rape, this was continuous abuse that she went through by multiple men for a long time. While she stood in the sidelines of the previous stories...this is what she was going through. It seemed surreal. The sensitive topics and how they were covered I think was well done. I do believe this book was muuuuch slower than book 1. Because of all the action in book 1 I expected this one to be just as crazy but it wasn't. Fully understanding the situation Laine was in, I feel the tension between Laine and Ang was dragged out a bit because the time they actually spent as a couple felt to me like nothing but a blurb in the book. Having said that, I did enjoy this book nonetheless. After having read numerous books I can say with certainty Emilia Finn is an awesome writer and I'm looking forward to starting book 3.

I love that this book was about Laine getting her power back and not just a sad, drawn out story about Laine being a victim. Angelo was patient and kind yet also a vigilante protector which made him the perfect hero. When they finally got together it may have been one of the hottest things I have ever read. I loved not only the chemistry between Ang and Laine but also the relationship between the twins, the friendship between Ang and Kane and the family dynamic they have as a group. So many times their banter had me in stitches. Jimmy Kincaid was the funniest flirt until Oz Frank's came along and stole the title but after reading this book its obvious Kane Bishop is the reigning king of jokes and sarcasm!
Sonia is such a well written and endearing character I couldn't not mention her in my review. Even the author's note at the end of the book had me smiling through tears. This was a powerful, emotional story that was incredibly well written.
Note: This book can be read as a standalone BUT Emilia Finn does an amazing job of developing her characters throughout her stories and then they continue to be included in each book. I highly suggest getting to know each of them by starting with the Rollin On series and reading the books in order.

Although it can *technically be considered a standalone as it focuses on different characters than the first, I wouldn’t recommend reading it before Pawns in the Bishop’s game. This story picks up right where the first one leaves off but focuses on Jessica’s twin sister Laine and her story post Graham. Laine is grieving her life before Graham and who she used to be. She is a shadow of her former self -terrified of men and being alone. Tired of being in pain and wanting it all to end, Laine doesn’t see any other way out. She is found in the shower by Angelo after slitting her wrists and trying to end it all. This story focuses on her recovery, and how Ang helps her trust herself again and realize that not all men are dangerous and will hurt you. This book had me hooked from the first page! Laine’s journey through trauma and healing is handled with sincerity and depth, and watching her slowly piece herself back together—with Angelo quietly by her side—was both heartbreaking and incredibly moving. The book doesn’t shy away from darkness: suicide ideation, hospitalization, and the weight of unresolved pain sit heavily in the early chapters. But that makes the light—Laine’s growth, Angelo’s patience, and their evolving bond—even more powerful.
Angelo is the heart of this story. His devotion to Laine, his slow-burn protectiveness, and his gentle encouragement (including the vintage Buick project!) make him a standout hero. Their road trip with Kane and Jess is a much-needed breather, filled with banter, awkward hotel room sharing, and emotional nudges toward long-overdue confessions. The chemistry is strong, but it’s the friendship and respect that give their relationship such satisfying weight.
Of course, Emilia Finn never shies away from a little vigilante justice—Angelo and Kane’s brutal revenge on Laine’s ex is visceral and cathartic, especially with Spencer’s help. Add in Angelo’s dark past and it’s clear he’s the kind of man who will move heaven and earth for the people he loves.
This was a gorgeous continuation of the series. While Checkmate book one still holds the crown for me, this was such a rewarding, tender, and fierce story of healing and chosen family. I'm so glad I finally picked it up—and now I can’t wait to keep going.
