Known for his biting wit and rapid-fire brain cells, Yukito Ayatsuji is a detective and top-ranked skill user who possesses the ability to expose any crime. When a request to investigate a puzzling murder incident hits his desk, Ayatsuji must team up with Mizuki Tsujimura, a spunky agent sent from the Special Division, to tackle the case. Can the unlikely duo get to the bottom of this mystery?!
I found it kind of hard to read, as the illustrations are small and full of details. Still, the story seems interesting and i love the art style. can't wait to see how this unfold.
Update (4/19/2022): My Gaiden brainrot is still going strong. I usually don't rate BSD volumes or light novels because they're relatively small components of a much larger whole, and because of my attachment to the overall story I feel that I can't accurately rate each individual volume, but since Gaiden is a standalone with its own characters, I can actually rate it now. I'll give it 5 stars, of course. I've read and analyzed every chapter several times by now, but each time I read a chapter I somehow end up finding something new. The light novel and volume 2 better get an official translation soon, because I am really starved for content. Also Ayatsuji is now my absolute favorite BSD character, and it should be a crime for him to be so underrated. Tsujimura also deserves so much better. The manga tends to make a joke out of her, but she's so complex if you take the time to look closer. Anyway, TL;DR: read Gaiden. Now. I'm not asking.
Update (3/29/2022): Okay so a few days ago I remembered this existed, and then fell down a rabbit hole of finding as much Gaiden content as I could. I ended up rereading both this official translation and some fan translations on Tumblr, and then I also cross-referenced everything with some light novel excerpts. When I first read this I thought it was pretty mediocre because I couldn't tell what was going on, but now I know. Now I understand. Now I can see all of the little details Oyoyo put into the manga. And I'm obsessed. I have such strong brainrot for this now and I can't believe so few people know about Gaiden. Please someone just read Gaiden and suffer with me, I can't be the only one losing my mind over all of this.
Also Ayatsuji Yukito is definitely one of my all-time favorite BSD characters now.
First review (5/24/2021): A pretty promising first volume. It was a little difficult to understand what was happening because of the art style, but, overall, it’s pretty good.
I can’t tell if Ayatsuji and Ranpo would bond instantly or if they’d develop such a strong rivalry that they’d become some kind of new soukoku.
"In a spy film, this is where the hero would defeat the villain and save the day, but..."
This Bungo Stray Dogs spin-off is written by the same author while the artwork is done by someone else.
The story is set in some unnamed place in Japan. There are references to the Armed Detective Agency in Yokohama but they don't make an appearance.
I like the story but the art is a bit harder to read. Especially during action scenes it can be difficult to see what's going on.
An interesting twist with this spin-off is that the authors featured here are still alive. Main character Yukito Ayatsuji is the author of Another. The novel has been translated by Yen Press. There's also been an Anime adaptation. Which makes this Japanese author a bit more familiar than the cast of the main story.
I have a new favourite character and that is Ayatsuji the suicide detective. Man, he reminded me so much of Dazai for some reason. And then we saw Dazai drawn in another art style which was a bonus! Dang, he looked fine. But back to the stoty, Ayatsuji is such an intresting character he made me think of Dazai because of his ways to figure out crimes that fast. But he is actually more like Ranpo with the whole deducing thing but both are great in finding out crimes pretty fast. Also i like his whole personality and vibe, the man loves cats! C'on! But the dolls? That is kinda creepy... He also is so chill when Tsujimura comes in to attempt to murder him again but don't do it eventually. I love their dynamic together. But i am so saddend there is no second volume coming out... I wish they would have also continued on with this series, it had a really good start. Maybe one day?
I like Ayatsuji and his skill. Once he identifies the culprit of a crime, they die. I like the detail where they experience an "accidental death." That detail really stood out to me. How interesting...
I also wasn't expecting this story to be told from the perspective of the Special Devision for Unusual Powers. I still find that "agency" being a secret government agency pretty cool. I guess I only gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because some of the more violent action-packed scenes were hard for me to tell what was actually going on. Aside from the scene where Ayatsuji used his skill and that murderous teacher died... I only understood what happened at that particular scene. But the scene where they were suddenly attacked near the end, I was so confused lol.

Interesting characters, though I hate the way everyone talks to Tsujimura. Be warned that the gore is much more graphic than in regular BSD. I'm not as interested in the story as I should be after this many chapters. It just isn't very compelling somehow. But I do plan to read the next volume and find out what happens. It's just not a big priority.
fucking amazing, ayatsuji should've help the Agency in the main plot lmao he could kill these villains in one go. very nice plot and surprisingly dimensional characters. shout out to Tsujimura <3 lol.
3.5 stars. tsujimura my lovely girlfailure girlloser girlboss and ayatsuji the frutiest character with questionable wardrobe choices to ever grace this spin off series <3
