Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (manga) (Volume 1) (Rascal Does Not Dream

Rate this book

Bunny girls do not live in libraries. This is simply common sense. And yet, that's exactly where Sakuta runs into one in the wild. More bewildering is who the bunny girl is: Mai Sakurajima, an upperclassman and well-known actress currently taking a break from industry work. Wanting to find out more about the mystery surrounding Mai (and maybe get a little closer to her in the process), Sakuta launches an investigation to figure out what's making this bunny girl invisible to everyone around them.

I really liked that this volume collects the manga that adapts the entirety of the first book of the Seishun Buta Yarō series of light novels. The original release had two volumes but this omnibus edition allows you to enjoy the first arc in one sitting.

Those who enjoyed the lone season of the anime Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai would enjoy this one as well. Reading this allowed me to enjoy the story at my own pace. vis-à-vis, reading the subtitles of anime. It allowed me a better look at how the original writer explained the pseudo-science at the heart of the story. My verdict would be Mai (Bunny Girl Senpai), Rio (Logical Witch), and the burgeoning bromance between Sakuta and Yuma are as interesting and entertaining here in the manga as they were in the anime.

2020 Read #634

This was very nearly a one-star read for me — the characters were just so bland and one-dimensional — but the idea of “adolescence syndrome” is a very intriguing one to me, especially with how it’s conveyed in this story. But everything else is pretty much a miss, at least for me.

Watch the anime.
The excellent characters and plot are shoved to the background for female fanservice shots and embarassed faces. The earnest and emotionally intelligent main character is just another teenage asshole. Given how well executed the anime was without the fanservice nonsense it's such a disappointment, and a betrayal to key points of certain characters' arcs

I know this one is popular in the manga community, but it was torturously mid. There was too much fan service (a particular shot from between Mai’s legs comes to mind, totally unnecessary for a wholesome story). The story was too short for the emotional depth it tried to hold. The whole thing about the bunny costume held no meaning. Really, I learned nothing from this book, and the romance wasn’t even that good. Cute art, though.

*Second time reading review* -3.5 stars

This was not bad, but I think I had better memory of it, or have read a lot more since reading this. It felt just a little average this time. Not bad, and I wouldn't say don't read it if this is your genre. I also do plan on reading the second volume, I just wasn't as in love with it, still deserves to keep it's 4 stars in official capacity though.

*First time reading review*- 4 stars

Finished this last week, it was pretty good. A fun story with well developed characters. I liked the artwork too. Great story over all.

Trigger Warnings: bullying

The pictures in this manga are well done, and I think Tsugumi Nanamiya did a really nice job.
This is a cute little slice-of-life romance story with an interesting plot, fun characters, and an HEA.

The plot
Sakuta, the MMC, goes to school with a famous child star actress, Mai, who is the MFC. He sees her dressed in a bunny outfit at the library, and both of them are shocked that he can see her since no one else can. As the story progresses less and less people can see her, and they even start forgetting that she exists. Sakuta thinks it's because of something he calls "adolescent syndrome." His sister was bullied harshly at school and woke up with marks all over her like her bullying had taken physical form. They think that maybe no one can see Mai because she kept wishing to be in a world where she couldn't be seen. Sakuta tries to help her solve the problem and they end up falling in love.

The characters
I loved Sakuta's personality. He had a dry sense of humor and was completely inappropriate, but he did it in a funny way. A lot of manga and anime show teenage boys as perverts, and this story plays into this by having him give funny remarks right back to those comments. Such as:
Mai: " Also, don't sit so close "
Sakuta:" Mm why? "
Mai: " You might get me pregnant "
Sakuta: " What should we name it? "
Freaking hilarious
Mai isn't the soft spoken crying persona or the overly aggressive type. She has a lot of spunk but it also down to Earth. She steps in with a slap when she needs to but also has heart for real problems.
Kaede, Sakuta's sister, doesn't have a major role, but she is important to the plot and is a really cute little sister. She roots for her brother's love life and when she thinks he's studying for his exams.
Rio is Sakuta's female friend who basically lives in the science lab and helps him solve the riddle of why no one can see or remember Mai. She's smart and sarcastic and added an interesting perspective to the story.

The romance
Sakuta likes Mai from the beginning but respects her boundaries and doesn't force himself on her. He makes perverted remarks, but she throws them right back at him. The love from her side took a bit longer, but it was believable, and you really wanted these two together by the end. There's quite a bit of fan service (but shots, etc.), but nothing under the clothing is shown, and they don't kiss or anything.

I enjoyed reading this and have added it to my permanent library for when I need a light, easy read. I recommend it to anyone dipping their toes into manga, who likes slice-of-life stuff, or who just wants a cute romance story.

Fantastic adaptation. I absolutely love it!

This is one of those stories you never want to end. It just never lasts long enough. It was such an emotional ride. I was literally yelling at my tablet when Mai slipped Sakuta the sleeping pills. I was all like "NO!!! He'll forget you, too!" The next few pages were just so sad, as Sakura slowly meandered around school, like a man with no purpose. However, he knew enough, to know something was wrong. He was forgetting something. Something important. Then his love for Mai came bubbling up like a fountain and he couldn't contain it. He had to exclaim his love for Mai to the whole school. Then, almost as if a veil had been lifted from their eyes and minds, the whole school finally saw Mai. They fully saw her, and knew who she was. She made it back, and into the waiting arms of Sakuta. I honestly would be satisfied with this ending right here. However, there are more adventures to come.

An omnibus that contains all of the Bunny Girl arc. Imagine that. It's good. The art is good, it hits the highlights of the story, but it's too fast, too condensed. The anime is better than the manga. And better the anime is the light novel Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.

If you don't know anything about Bunny Girl Senpai it would not be a bad place to start -- in fact you should start. But certainly do yourself a favor and continue on with more of it.

I was initially a bit worried about this series, it has a few cringe inducing images.

However, if you can get passed that the story and character here was really good. It is about being seen and accepted, about learning more about people beyond the surface.

The art work for the series does an amazing job depicting the range of emotions the character feel.

I particularly liked how concise the story was, this one volume was basically a full story arc. There are follow up manga, dealing with other characters, and continuing the story, but I really enjoyed that the author was able to tell a fulfilling and complete story, without relying on dozens of volumes.

Well worth a read for fans of romance and slice of life manga.

I had seen a lot of gifs and memes about this anime, and they were interesting enough that they caught my attention so when I saw the manga was available down at my local library, I decided to give it a try.

Overall, it was a good enough story but I honestly felt stupid the whole time due to all the scientific terminology and concepts that I found difficult to grasp. I feel like this is an anime/manga that it more geared to the more educated of us, and that's perfectly fine but this series is just not for me.

The characters were interesting and varied enough that I wanted to find out more about them- like the main characters sister and his scientist best friend. I would have enjoyed seeing their stories get fleshed out more.

A really compelling novel with an interesting concept. I'm excited to read the other material in this series since I hear its taken more seriously in the anime and light novel! It's a nice introduction to the series and helps visualize the characters and concepts easier. The art is beautiful, very nice inking and the panels are easy to read and follow! I love the anti-child star message at its root and the chemistry between Mai and Sakuta is genuinely very sweet, and the jokes are pretty funny. A good easy read if you're looking for a short feel-good story that has more depth beyond the basic surface, as well as a new series to get into that has other media available to enjoy.

Decided to read the book after watching the anime (which I absolutely adore)! A story of a high school boy, Sakuta, dedicated to resolving Mai's adolescence syndrome. Meanwhile, establishing an adorable relationship with her.

It's a cheesy but sweet high-school romance story with a little mystery intertwined. The artwork is amazing, and the story is well paced (there's nothing drawn out too much).

Honestly liked it a lot more near the end. But overall could be so much better. Really great concept and theory but the execution is lackluster. the incest implication, random sexual shots and comments, the overly sexualized art style set BGS apart from lovely works such as A Silent Voice. This could’ve been a story with an equal emotional impact but here we are, and here I am, having read all of it

This is a story I would never have picked up based on the title alone, but I saw a Tiktok about it and it seemed really interesting. And I'm really glad I did. The story is really interesting.

There are definitely weird parts, like the guy's comments to women, but nothing extremely creepy.

I'd suggest checking it out if you're interested in the descriptions.

Tbh it definitely not the best thing I have read but it was really sweet. It was very wholesome and it made me smile. The art it nice though there was definitely some stuff I thought they could leave out but, meh 🤷‍♀️.

I think, if you are looking for something cute, wholesome and chill to read with a cute drawing style this book might be for you👍

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would!!!
I adore the relationship between Sakuta and Mai. Their chemistry was great. The story of this first volume was great too. It’s a little confusing but I still enjoyed it.
There were some ecchi moments but honestly, it didn’t take away from the story.

I've owned this volume for so long, but it's taken me until today to actually pick it up and read it! There was no major reason, but I really loved it. The artwork, the development, the characters, all top notch! I have the second Omnibus, so I'll be going right into that one too!

This story is brilliant even if the horny teens are immature. I loved the anime and found the constant horniness of the manga annoying, but it doesn't detract from the brilliance of the connection of these characters and the interesting syndrome they face.

i'm just literally experiencing this story in reverse adaptation order at this point, huh? (in my defense i probably woulda done the light novel before the manga, but my wife who has already read the light novel checked the manga out from the library, and i wanted to read it before vi returned it.)
