Starship Fesarius is heading back to Earth after a seventeen-month deployment in space. Her crew will take shore leave and be assigned to other duties while their ship undergoes a thirteen-month refit. Before that can happen, however, the Admiralty recalls Fesarius back to duty status just an hour after landing -- a passenger ship inbound from Alpha Centauri III is experiencing FTL Drive problems. A core breach will kill all 792 souls aboard if they don't get there in time. The rescue goes off without incident but there is one fatality, and the death of that GEC lieutenant leaves his seven-year-old daughter alone in the world. Follow along as the Captain and his wife see about adopting the orphaned waif while teaching a class at the Academy and overseeing the refit of starship Fesarius.
Born in 1960, Mr Adams has been writing fiction since 1993 when his mother gave him an obsolete computer. "The Adoption" is the eighth book in his Fesarius series of sci-fi novels. He has blended elements of Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel and plenty of common sense to create a read that is both comfortably familiar yet completely new. Mr. Adams is divorced and lives alone in Kendallville, Indiana.

I enjoy this series, which reminds me of the science fiction I read in the 70s and 80s with emphasis on the characters and adventures. That said, the overall tone of the story earned it 4 stars, because some problems I have with this world became much more noticeable in this book. I prefer authors leave their politics out of the books I'm reading about a future world. I would hope Saudi Arabia, if it still exists in 100 years as a nation, would be more enlightened than it is portrayed in this series. Rey-el has been the Captain's wife for 20 years and has not cared about her husband's career? That would infer that their marriage has only lasted because they never see each other. And the sister-in-law marrying the Captain's brother as a consolation prize is a poor story trope and not worthy of this series.
Like every book in this series, I enjoyed this one. however I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because unlike the other ones, this one was slow and a bit boring. That's because Fesarius goes home to Earth for a 1 year reprieve. No exploring other solar systems or alien battles in this one which just made it less desirable for me to read and took me longer to finish than the others. However, it was still nice to see the crew living a bit of their life on earth. I still highly recommend this entire series
