I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.
Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!
This is a series I would rate more than 5 star if I could! Engaging plot- ✔ immersive world building- ✔ well developed characters -✔ if you are hovering above that purchase button so it, you will not regret it. From the beginning to the end of this box set I was pulled in as our anti-hero the Hunter began his journey to find the truth. The battle scene descriptions are vivid and high action as well as frequent as the Hunter gets himself in fights constantly. I cannot put into words how much I'm hooked on Andy Peloquin's writing now and will definitely be continuing on with this series as well as all the rest of his work I can get my hands on.
So I made it through 40% of this, by that time I felt like I was reading a teen angst novel. The Book spends sooooooooooo much time on the MC’s inner angst and monologue I started rooting for his enemies. The other part that I found annoying, is this dude is supposed to be an all world assassin, and yet falls for every single trap, ambush, setup, backstab- I mean literally Every. Frickin. Time, I’m assuming the other 60% will be more of him falling into every obvious trap, having a half a chapter internal pity party then go on a killing rampage too only feel more angst for killing. I picture the MC as Kristen Stewart in my mind only even more depressingly angsty. I gave it two stars because it had a lot of potential, but never lived up to it.
This is a phenomenal series and it’s great news that Andy’s given it the box set treatment. The Hunter is a conflicted hero, who struggles with his past, his place , and his mission, all the while representing as a perfect combination of Dexter, Venom and Robin Hood. His morals are questionable, but there is always a heroic side itching to get out, which makes him a fascinating three dimensional creation.
Andy Peloquin loves his characters and his world, and it’s apparent while reading any of the books in this box set. It’s always a joy to read the work of an author whose sense of enthusiasm for the stories he’s written shines through in every page.
I’d strongly recommend jumping head first in to Andy’s world of Einan head first with this “killer” box set.
I enjoyed all these books. I thought this book brought a nice, tight conclusion to the story, yet it clearly leaves us with the knowledge that The Hunter’s adventures will continue. Good action wrapped up in a good story.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these three books. Very happy they were in a trilogy so I could binge read the whole lot. It's books like these that help me deal with my chronic facial pain, they are so immersive it helps me through the day to imaging I'm somewhere else. I could not put them down. There's so much action and detail of the main character and what he endures because of the blade. I can't wait until I read more about the Hunter. If your looking for a book with a very strong main character, a gripping plot line, lots of action and immersion then I would highly recommend this trilogy. Andy Peloquin is such a great writer, he captures the imagination with his writing and transports you with the character to another world. I have been a fan of his books for years and will continue to read them with glee.
Its great to have the first books all together! There are a some unique characters, plenty of blood and guts, non-stop action and an amazing storyline. It is exciting, well written and Andy brings out the full potential of the series. This series is brilliant :) I received an ARC from the author.
These are great books to fall to sleep with. I don't mean to be unkind however the dialogue is so repetitive that you can easily glaze over and nod off. This is a shame because if all three of these books had been condensed into one it would be a cracking yarn.
Book1: Dexter meets the Punisher. Durzo Blint meets Ezio Auditore da Firenze. I must confess that is was Durzo Blint that made it an instant ‘want to read’ for me. I was not disappointed!
Durzo Blint is a character that has my love. A book that promises to be on that level, must deliver and in my opinion Darkblade Assassin does that. This book certainly has a grim-dark setting. The story takes place in a city that is ruled by corruption. The powerful rich take and the suppressed poor try to make the best out of their miserable lives.
The main character is the Hunter. He does not know how he became the Hunter, or why he is the Hunter. But he is, and I am looking forward to know more about his history. Andy writes compelling characters whom support the main character and his quest. There is quite a bit of information given about the religion system, I think this will play a bigger role in the next books. The action scenes are well written, with enough information to make it flow in your minds eye but not so much to slow it down
To make the long version short: again a 4 stars read, it has a grim-dark setting, demons, the scum of the earth and one hunter who is trying to figure out what his place is in all this darkness.
Book 2: The story of the Hunter continues in the second book of Hero of Darkness written by Andy Peloquin. In the first book we learned about the Hunter as part of the story if the city Voramis. The second book is more centered about the Hunter. I enjoyed the flashbacks to the unknown history of the Hunter. I also enjoyed the character building that happened in this book. You can see him grow in understanding of his own nature and getting more control over his dark side.
Sometimes I want to grab the Hunter by his shoulders and give him a good shake! You are doing an amazing job!! Don’t let the demon win! But how hard is it, when you have a 24/7 voice in your head telling you otherwise. Telling you that you are nothing more then a killer, that it lusts for blood. It would drive any person crazy.
There is a lot of information and they answer part of my questions, but still more remain and new ones has arisen. There is only one solution and that is to keep on reading!
Book 3: We are again treated with a great story of the Hunter! Darkblade Protector is the 3th book of Hero of Darkness written by Andy Peloquin. This book is again more character driven then plot driven, something I immensely enjoy. And can I just say what a beautiful cover!
The writing style of Andy has me captivated. This time we are thrown into the story and then go back to how we got there. It was a new twist in how to experience the story that I could appreciate. After three books I also must comment on the use of smells in the books. The Hunter has a very keen nose and every person has his or her unique smell, I love that this is a focus point for I find smell very important (and are often disappointed in public transport by the smell of people :X but maybe people think the same of me lol).
This is again a grim tale, were the Hunter must survive against the odds. The story keeps unfolding, but still… there is so much I do not know! Must keep on reading!
This one I’ve been going back and forth in my mind and it’s really hard to rate. Ultimately I’d say 3.5 stars. There are some good pros but a fair amount of cons and really left me wanting
Pros: I think it’s a cool premise and idea. Assassin possessed by a demon and such but tries to keep a code of honor. The longer the series goes the greater the world gets and the depth of enemies and mystery.
Cons: that being said, it’s a bit long winded and shouldn’t be as long as it is. Each book has several of the villain with the long monologue trope. They also tend to talk in circles and say the same thing over and over. You could cut 100-150 pages out of each story.
Wanting: for as long of a story it is there is only one character. Usually there are at least side characters that grow too but it’s very short stints. A woman you meet in the first book would have been great to have around longer, or the crazy guy in the 2nd. Reading so much about one person in an epic fantasy is hard to keep interest. Doesn’t need other POV but include actual side characters for longer than a few chapters.
I got this because it was on kindle unlimited, pretty good for unlimited but I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series.
I've read the first two so far and wow! Darkblade Assassin was a thrilling read that fires you up and ignites the darkness within! It grips you right from the beginning and won't let you go until the final plunge! It was beautifully written and wonderfully dark!
The Hunter has now been added to my list of favorite antiheroes! A dark voice whispering in his ear, compelling him to kill...to feed, a mysterious past he cannot remember, and abilities no one should be able to possess...all of it...just brilliant!
Darkblade Outcast delves deeper into the Hunter's dark world. It was utterly amazing! As in, somebody better make a movie of this because it'll freaking ROCK the box office!!!!! I am a sucker for antiheroes and the Hunter . . . I love his character sooo much that I dressed up as him for Halloween. The world that Peloquin has created is absolutely brilliant!
Heroes of Darkness was actually the first dark fantasy series that I read . . . and OMG, where has this been all my life? The amount of awesomeness packed into these pages????? BAH!!!
The start of a great series! The first three books of the excellent Hero of Darkness series. I highly recommend it!
Darkblade Assassin - Very interesting! Little is as it first appears in this tale of an assassin with a unique blade and dark reputation.
Darkblade Outcast - Great story! The Hunter’s journey of self discovery continues with lots of action. The existence of a larger plot and his role in it is becoming more apparent. Can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Darkblade Protector - This book is evil! I could not put it down and it kept me up way to late! None stop action! Loved it! Can’t wait to read the next one!
Normally have a compulsion to finish a story, no matter how bad it gets. Or at least to skim through to the ending. Couldn't even get to chapter 7. Nothing like reading about a horny psycho who claims to hate humanity, crave murder, yet is fascinated with an orphan n their well-being. This is perhaps the worst book ever attempted to read. Sad too, read the series fell apart in book 2, yet the first book was supposed to be amazing.
Good read, keeps you interested and the story line is different from most of the fantasy books I have read. The character list isn't too large to remember so it is easy enough to keep up with who is who. As it is book one of three in the series I am looking forward to seeing where the story line goes in book two.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author and I will be looking at more of his stuff in the future.
One last being is left to ensure that humanity has a chance. The Hunter, with his inner Demon must do what he has chosen to do. The author describes the pain and gain well in this, the first collection of three well written books. This story grabs you and holds you as you, the reader will the Hunter to succeed.
the Hunter has no memory of his long past. but the blade at his side and the voice in his head remind that he has a past that involves killing. and justice and that there is an evil out there he must fight.
i. Really. Love. This . Series. the Hunter has enough torment and conscience to be human. he interacts so well with the whole cast. Love it
Andy Peloquin is able to bring visualizations to light, including the sounds and smells causing the reading to be a sensory experience in addition to imagination. Whether it be the city, or battle, you can be assured you'll know what it sounded like and the smells that are there for the character. Great writing and user of sensory.
This was the first three books of the series and started off well and carried on in second part,by the third section it seemed to slow and I began to struggle, might take a break before next set. The author is good but I found my interest starting to wain by the third book.
Another collection of stories that showcase what Peloquin does best street crime, dark fantasy and tortured characters living in the grey areas between right and wrong, good and evil teying their best. A great read and a intriguing story with great characters and detail.
I really enjoyed the other series by Andy Pelloquin, warriors of steel and glory, and this was really gripping. There were some bits that almost got a bit samey, but I found it hard to put down. Now onto the next four volumes. If you like a bit of fantasy then I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Thank you Andy Pelloquin.
This is a brilliant series, full,of not stop action from start to finish. The Hunter is one mean dude. Cannot wait for the next set. If you like the Hero of Darkness you’ll love this. Very highly recommended must read.
Characters to love, characters to hate stir in some intrigue and revelation and you have an exciting adventure series. A bit on the dark side, but worth the read.
Although at times the story is laborious, it holds the attention, what's going to happen next, how does he get out of this, all these questions kept me reading I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy or excitement
Enjoyed this series very much. A lot of fun. Lots of action. Great characters. Read the first three books in just a few days. Enthusiastically recommend to all.
Great books so far, Im about to start book 4. When I went to Andy’s website, for suggested reading order, he suggests after Im done with book 4 go to another series, and so forth. It appears he has written around 4 series all based in the same world.
Loved these books. The action was good and believable. You got know the character's and I was a routing for the main character for the whole time.can't want for the sequel to these series!
I read these three books together which was a challenge but well worth it. I like the way the story develops and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
What an amazing, exciting story. Such magical characters and what an imaginary nation. It felt like I was actually there as a bystander and could see the actions.
