By many measures Enda Kenny was Fine Gael's most successful leader of all time, but his position as Taoiseach was thrown into turmoil in February 2017 by an explosive political scandal – one which threatened to collapse his government, and ultimately cost Kenny his job. In Enda the Nine Days That Toppled a Taoiseach, Gavan Reilly offers an enthralling blow-by-blow account of the Maurice McCabe how a Garda whistleblower was targeted by a national smear campaign, and how the government's botched response led to a fatal loss of trust in its leader. Compiled through exhaustive research and interviews with dozens of key figures and witnesses, Enda the Road is the ultimate account of a nine-day political hurricane whirlwind that brought down a Taoiseach.
Very well written and researched book. My only caveat to those interested in reading this book is to not judge the book by its cover. I had assumed it was going to be about the relationship between Enda and Leo and how their political lives intertwined. Instead the book is really about how Maurice McCabe’s fight for justice impacted on Enda’s career. So it was not the book I was expecting, but that is no fault of the author. If I had read the blurb instead of just looking at the cover I would have known that. Gavan Reilly is a fantastic journalist and all round nice guy (from the 30 seconds I met him in person) and I hope he goes on to publish more Irish political works.
Forensic analysis and well written. But sometimes these books, written so close to the event, lack perspective as most of the main figures are still in office and reluctant to reveal any noteworthy information. A good read though
This is a good insight into how a Garda whistleblower’s inquiry end eventually with the demise of Enda Kenny as head of the Irish Government and the sneaky political Leo Varadkar rise.
