After I read the blurb of the story, I really looked forward to reading this "murder mystery". This did not turn out to be what I expected. The first half of the story dragged. I felt too much emphasis was placed on the illicit affair Ellen was having with Alexander. There was not enough background on the villain, Lachlan, Ellen's fiancé. The story became more interesting about two thirds of the way through the book. That kept my attention and allowed me to finish reading the book. At the end there were too many loose ends. Even after reading the extended epilogue, it did not tie up some of the loose ends. The overall storyline had promise. I feel this book has room for improvement.

Very interesting story! A high born, wealthy young English lady is devastated after the brutal death of her father. She is then told that her father's will includes a marriage contact with the son of a Scottish Laird. Her godfather takes her to Scotland to meet her betrothed. She soon finds that the man she is to marry is not what he seems. I, he is kind and thoughtful - but his true self is cold and greedy. Ellen finds a friend in Isla, the wife of the Laird's second son's best friend. As Ellen discovers more about Lachlan's true self, she fears for her life as his wife. She finds herself drawn to his brother, Alexander, and makes decisions that will affect her life in the castle. This book describes life in the Highlands and how it differs from Ellen's life in England. The characters are well drawn and interesting and castle life is vividly described and some scenes are on the steamy side. I heartily recommend this book and this author"

Her Fate Is Chosen for Her💃💔

Ellen's businessman father dies, writing into his will that she, as the last living relative, must marry into a Scottish Lairdship🐺🔪 to keep the business going. He's no sooner in the ground, than Ellen is sent off to the Laird's castle🏰 to marry Lachlan👺🔪, the eldest of the Laird's two sons.
The big problem is Ellen💃💔 doesn't like the older son, he is a narcissistic insincere liar and a libertine, only in it for himself. He just wants her 💰money.

Ellen💃💋 falls instantly in love💞 with Alexander🐺🍆⛲🔪, the younger brother.
The book consists of Ellen💃💋 and Alexander🐺🍆⛲🔪 trying to keep their love secret from Lachlan👺🔪, while the time of her marriage to Lachlan👺🔪 grows closer and closer. As the wedding date approaches, Ellen💃💋 is so frightened and upset, she makes herself sick.

Lachlan👺🔪 stops at nothing to marry Ellen and get control of the business and money💰, even banishing Alexander🐺🍆⛲🔪 to England.

ARC Received from Bookfunnel🌀
I also got the book with KU.

This book is a well written adult Romance💞 and Adventure with criminal elements, murder🔪, and spying.
I had a large problem with The way the book ended but am not going to reveal why in order to protect the plot.

Ellen Holton discovered she was to marry the eldest son of a Scottish Laird when her father was murdered. She had no desire to marry this Scottish man at all. As she was getting ready for her father's funeral her maid told her it was time for her to go and she needed to play her part as a dutiful daughter walking behind the funeral procession waiting when she got down the stairs was Charles Braiser he gave her a hug, then went on to tell her that Lachlan Golgow would be at the funeral but she didn't have to meeting them. She buried her father greeted her guests and finally went upstairs to lie down and try to sleep but she did. Charles spoke to Laird and Lachlan about putting the wedding off for a couple weeks or so to give Ellen time to get climate ties to the Scottish people, they agreed with him so the wedding was postponed. What problems did she have meeting the people the Golgow family and then the date arrived for her wedding to find out everything that happened you have to read the book. And it's a good book...

I really enjoyed this book from Lydia Kendall. I think it is one of her best and I was impressed by the plot development as well as the character arcs of several of the characters, particularly Ellen (who experiences a virtual hero's journey) and Isla. Although foreshadowing may have been a bit heavy-handed at times, it was effective and did not detract from the plot. There were unexpected incidents despite the foreboding sense of what was likely happen, and the climax of the story took me by surprise. The tension was a bit much for me, as I was kept in doubt of a happy ending until the very end. Thankfully, there is one.

RAISING THE STAKES!!!
Wow! Man, talk about one heart pounding adventure. All the unexpected events and mishaps propel all the stormy, swirling emotions running rampant and thrusting this baby to life spectacularly. We have foes to fight, enemies to conquer and people to save. Just another day in paradise. You have all the drama, suspense and danger that keeps nipping at your heels undaunted. The characters are solid with individual traits and qualities that balance and blend, playing off one another brilliantly. The scenes are so detailed and descriptive as it hustles and bustles thrusting this bad boy together flawlessly. Lydia and Cobalt spin this rushing vortex so thick and woven in their imagination until everything else ceases to exist. Remarkable job guys, thanks for sharing this jewel with us.

What a great book! I loved it. This is an exciting story, a real page Turner from beginning to end. There are lots of twists and turns and it's action packed, full of drama, suspense and romance. It's very well written and the characters are well described, engaging and likeable. All except Lachlan, the Laird's son. What a detestable man! The story kept me on the edge of my seat, though - I couldn't put it down. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from cover to cover.

Ellen Holton is grieving for her father who just passed away. Alone by herself with only her guardian now,Charles Braiser who was the best friend of her father, and she considers him as her uncle Charles. Ellen loves him dearly. Ellen was promised to marry Lachlan Gowglow, eldest son to the Laird Elairon in Scotland. This arrangement was made a long time ago,and Ellen is not happy about it. She regrets having to leave England to meet Lachlan. When she arrives the beauty of this country is overwhelming for her ,along with Lachlan's brother,Alexander Gowglow. Love at first sight! Does it still happen? In this story it most certainly happened, and Alexander knows that it is against Gowglow clan rules.
Ellen and Alexander become lovers, but with great risk. They must say their goodbyes to each other. Ellen's wedding day is in 2 days.
Deceitful plans are put into action against both Ellen and Alexander. Uncle Charles never arrived on Ellen's wedding day, and she refuses to go through with the wedding. Lachlan can't wait for his wedding night. He has everything to gain. Finally control of Ellen, properties in England along with much wealth. This story is intense with emotions, romance, ,grieving of loved ones, deceitfulness within the family, and you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough to find out what happens in the end. Great Story Lydia I enjoyed this one.

What a wonderful story!  Lydia Kindall's novels keep getting better and better. Her stories are always interesting and allows a reader to imagine themselves as one of the characters. Two brothers want Ellen for very different reasons, one brother has a darker side to him. Will Ellen make the right choice before it's to late? Ellen, Lachlan, and Andrew will draw you in and give you reason to take the journey with them. Their story is a spicy romance, betrayal, excitement and action, and the villain getting his due. Torn Between Two Highlander's will draw you in and keep you turning the pages! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, from cover to cover. The Extended Epilogue rounds out the story very well. Also the Scottish Brogue Glossary is a welcome addition to the novel. Hopefully there will be another novel that will let us know what happened to Malcolm.

Dishonorable intentions

After Ellen's father is attacked and killed, she learns that she is to be wed to Lachlan the heir apparent to the Laird in Scotland that her father had known and done business with. Her father's business partner, Charles has been an honorary uncle to her and escorts her to Scotland so that Ellen can become acquainted with Lachlan before the wedding. When
Ellen's feelings for Lachlan are tepid at best, but the instant attraction between herself and his brother Alexander throws her into turmoil. When she learns more about Lachlan's character, she decides that while he's gone on business from the castle, she's going to seduce his brother so that at least she has control over whom takes her innocence.

Lydia Kendall has written a story that is full of suspense and intrigue which kept me reading until the end. The characters were well described and entertaining. Ellen has just suffered the loss of her father and has also been informed that he had arranged a marriage for her before his death. She feels that she must agree to her father’s last wishes and travels to his home in order to get to know him. Once there Ellen realized that she will never be able to love her betrothed because she loves another.

The Best Man

Very entertaining and romantic. Alexander was sweet and kind. Lachlan was evil and mean. Greed and corruption is what finally destroyed him. I felt sorry for the Laird because he still grieved for his wife and Lachlan betrayed him. Loved the extended epilogue.

A good premise ruined by an author's rush to finish it? I don't know if this was written as the author intended but this instalove plus zero resolution to the villain was the worst I read in a while.
