Nick and Grace have been together for 7 years. Nick has helped bring up her daughter Lottie. The night he proposed should be a memorable happy time but will be a date she will never forget, for a different reason, as that night Nick disappears without a trace!!

The police think he has just left her, but why would he propose then leave? She think she knows him well, but does she?

The story goes back to Nick’s childhood, when he went on holiday with close friends who made his life hell by ignoring him. A tragedy occurs and this has affected Nick through to adulthood.

This story is told from several people’s prospectives leading from the childhood holiday until the days leading up to Nicks disappearance. What was Nick hiding?

This book kept me gripped with its mystery and secrets. The ending did not disappoint and for me was quite unexpected but brilliant!!

Definitely recommend this book. I was instantly drawn into this story and kept captive until the last page.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

It dragged A LOT and so far I could guess what was going on, then I skipped to the last chapter (not proud of it but glad I did it) and yeah that’s it…

Grace's fiancé vanishes the night after he proposed. As Grace searches for answers, she finds that Nick wasn't the uncomplicated man she thought she knew. She uncovers a hidden tragedy from his childhood.

The story starts off very slowly but stick with it as its pace does get quicker. There are plenty of twists with people hiding secrets and betrayals. I could wait to see what had happened to Nick so I devoured this book in one sitting. Once you get into the story the tension builds. The characters feel true to life but which ones can you trust? A decent read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, RandomHouse UK, Transworld Publishers and the author Emma Curtis for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow what an excellent read. It was completely gripping and had so many twists and turns which were brilliant. It had you thinking one thing and then it completely changes. All the characters were interesting and I found the book to be so gripping. I just wanted to read it in one as I was desperate to know what happened next. It’s easily one of my favourite books. It had everything you could want in a book and more. I definitely recommend it.

Emotive & largely realistic psychological thriller with depth of one man’s disappearance.

Having enjoyed Emma Curtis’ second novel I was keen to read The Night You Left, despite its familiar premise and getting off to a slow start. Thankfully I was rewarded by another well-written and gripping psychological thriller with depth, empathy and reality. That is not to say it was lacking in twists but there is a maturity to the entire novel which is lacking in so much of the genre, from the consideration of the practicalities of a man disappearance on his family to the unprocessed trauma of the past and the misunderstandings and half-truths that can change lives. Emma Curtis scores highly with well-defined characters crafted with skill and an understanding of the psychological implications of longstanding guilt from the past.

The novel opens with Grace Trelawney being knocked sideways by the disappearance of her partner of seven years after leaving the house following his proposal to her. Thirty-four-year-old hedge fund banker, Nick Ritchie, it soon turns out wasn’t quite the uncomplicated man that Grace assumed he was when they fell in love with. But Grace has her our history too and despite the lack of police interest in her fiancé she soon discovers how instrumental the summer of 2000 was in the lives of Nick’s family and two others families, all long estranged.

As a dual narrative unfolds with Grace’s concern and distress at Nick’s disappearance under the microscope, the intrusion of Nick’s snobby mother, Cora, who undermines Grace at every turn and his weak father, Tim, brings added pressure. With Lottie’s real father, Douglas, a controlling and overbearing influence on Grace hanging about and her vulnerability made evident the present day storyline is emotive and involving despite not being the paciest. A second timeline winds the clock back to July 2000 and follows a tragic summer holiday to Devon with the Ritchies joining two other families which Nick has neglected to mention to Grace and all of the involved parties seem reluctant to discuss with her.

Much of the present day timeline consists of the first-person narrative of Grace and how she is coping with the emotional and practical implications of Nick’s disappearance whilst attempting to limit the disruption on ten-year-old Lottie’s life. The 2000 timeline is presented from multiple perspectives all of which serve to give rise to grudges, conflicted memories and guilt complexes with far-reaching consequences. As Grace doggedly investigates just what did happens that summer she herself becomes the focus of police suspicion as her troubled past is thrown back at her...

Absorbing with very real reasons why Nick might not have shared his memories of that summer with his fiancée and believable implications for the future of all of those involved. Highly satisfying despite being on the lengthy side at nearly 450 pages.

The book opens with the disappearance of Grace’s fiancé, Nick. Grace is distraught. The night before Nick proposed to her and she can’t understand why he would leave without speaking to her. Grace is convinced that something has happened to him, and as details about Nick’s past begin to unravel, it seems that Nick might be in danger. I really liked the dual timeline here which takes us back to the year 2000, when Nick is a teenager on holiday with his family and a group of friends. As it gradually begins to reveal what happened on that holiday, it becomes apparent that Nick has been hiding certain aspects of his past from Grace. Did it have any bearing on his disappearance in the present? .

I could feel Grace’s frustration as the police seemed to take little interest in her fiancé’s disappearance. In their eyes, he’s a grown adult, and until he has been missing for a certain amount of time, there was little they could do. I also couldn’t believe the treatment Grace was receiving from Nick’s parents. I really took a disliking to them, especially as they seemed to want to move on very quickly and already believed that Nick was dead and wasn’t coming back. This was what made me root for Grace even more. I wanted her to get justice. It also made me want to believe that Nick was still alive.

There are some horrific and disturbing reveals as the truth about Nick’s past. I could begin to see some of the reasons behind Nick’s disappearance. The novel shows you how, over time, a past event can fester in someone’s mind. It shows you what a person is capable of if they are just pushed over the edge. And that person is always the one who you least expect.

Another great book by this author, the other book I've read by her was When I Find You.

Grace's fiance vanishes without a trace the night after proposing.

Has he walked out on her or is he in danger?

Grace along side her daughter Lottie desperately search for answers and it becomes clear they both have kept part of their lives hidden from each other.

Like I previously said great book, great character development.

If you like a suspenseful read pick up this one.

Nick disappears just hours after proposing to Grace. She goes through the motions but slowly starts to realise everything may not be as it seems – will her secrets be kept whilst she’s uncovering those of the people around her?!
Such an enjoyable read, the story moves around from present day to the past and from different characters perspectives. I always enjoy this- when done in the right way and this was good. I never felt confused or not sure whose perspective I was reading. I think the inclusion of different character’ POV and scenes from their old lives really helped move the story along quickly.
Grace is obviously emotional, urgent and wanting answers – this leaps from the page and you feel the frustration in not knowing what has happened and if anyone she knows has got the answer. I must admit I worked out some aspects of the story, but they were quickly addressed and there were plenty of additional twists that took me by surprise. The ending – well, crikey me, I did not anticipate that at all.
This book is well-paced, lots of drama happening throughout to keep you entertained. I enjoyed the elements showing Nicks past – especially as we hadn’t had chance to garner opinion of him before he went missing – and we get to see everything he has had to go through.
This book will grab you from the off, I was engrossed and on the edge of my seat until I finished it. I’ve never read any of Emma’s books but I will definitely be rectifying that.
Highly recommend.

This was a fun read. Grace's fiance disappeared hours after proposing to her and that left her in a conundrum of confusion and fear. What had happened to him? And what was he hiding?

My first book by Emma Curtis showed me Nick's life in the present and the past. The events which led to the disappearance were laid bare as the pages turned. There were a lot of disturbing characters who seemed to have a hand in this. It took Grace strength and fortitude to get to the truth.

The first half was a bit slow as compared to what thrillers do. 2 timelines and many POV too kept me on my toes. There were not many twists, but the story itself was engaging to keep me engrossed in the mystery of Nick's disappearance.

Overall, a fun read.

*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the Publisher.

Gripping from the very first page, THE NIGHT YOU LEFT by Emma Curtis is a psychological thriller that will enthral your mind while making your skin chill, and is definitely up there as one of my top reads in this genre this year.

When Nick proposes out of the blue one afternoon, Grace is over the moon. Her life with Nick and her daughter is everything she ever hoped for and everything she thought she may never have. But when Nick goes for a walk that evening and doesn't arrive home, Grace is thrown into a panic. Did something awful happen to him? Could he have left her? Is he with another woman? And as Grace sets out to uncover the truth, she quickly realises that there is so much about Nick's past that she never knew about and it seems that his past and present have collided. But Grace knows the real Nick and she knows that he would never willingly walk away from their wonderful life together. One thing is for certain, she will not stop until she knows the truth no matter how hard, or dangerous, that may be.

Instantly thrown into the story, I enjoyed the alternate chapters moving from the present situation where Nick is missing, to flashbacks of Nick's teenage years which has shaped him greatly. The characters are excellently portrayed and I found myself warming to Grace immediately even though it is obvious that she has her own hidden secrets too. Obsession, revenge, tragedy, and twisted memories are all the order of the day in this book and there is honestly never a dull moment from start to finish.

THE NIGHT YOU LEFT by Emma Curtis puts the psychological into psychological thriller and I highly recommend this corker of a story to all fans of this genre. I look forward to more from this author.

Unlikable characters

This is the first book I've read where I didn't like any of the characters except the dog, Grace was so annoying and her relationship with her ex was in my opinion bloody ridiculous as if he could control her like that and march in and out of her hse like that her partner Nick would he really except that behaviour! As for Anna what a selfish b.... and the in laws terrible. Overall i felt in the first half there was two many characters and I did get a bit confused. Overall it did keep me interested but just thought it was a bit unrealistic for me.

I have to start by saying that I knew this was going to be a good book as my mam read it before me and she said it was brilliant. Now we all know how hard mothers are to please, so I didn't doubt her for a moment, and of course she wasn't wrong!

The Night You Left drew me in right from the start with its mystery and intrigue. Why on earth would Nick propose to Grace then walk out of her life without a word the following day? The police think Nick has simply left Grace but Grace knows him better than anyone and knows he wouldn't do that. Or at least she thought she knew Nick but it soon becomes clear that he has kept secrets from his past hidden from her. How well did she really know her fiancé after all?

I usually pick things up and connect the dots quite quickly but I don't know whether the current heatwave has melted my brain or more likely that Emma Curtis is such a talented writer that she had me fooled. I was so greedily lapping up Nick's story from the past that I completely missed something and I ended up kicking myself as I couldn't believe I hadn't made the connection. I obviously don't want to admit brain fade but I do think that Emma Curtis had cleverly deflected my attention so I didn't make this connection until a split second before she planned to reveal it.

The characters are portrayed brilliantly in The Night You Left. I absolutely loved to hate Nick's mother, Cora. What a b*tch! She makes no secret of the fact that she doesn't like Grace and doesn't think she's good enough for her precious son. Grace's ex, Douglas, made my skin crawl; strangely enough he creeped me out more than Nick's father, Tim, who has a very murky past. Douglas is so controlling, not just of Grace, but he needs to be in control of absolutely everything. He seems to be a very cool and calculating individual, although he does lose his cool at one point in his very own 'Here's Johnny' moment.

I don't need to think twice before saying that I wholeheartedly recommend this totally addictive book. It's full of mystery, intrigue and family secrets that kept my eyes glued to the page from start to finish. A highly recommended read and a well deserved 5 stars from me.

I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

“The Night You Left” by Emma Curtis

💍This book is definitely what you need if you like multilayered psychological thrillers with lots of unexpected and intense twists.

Genre: Novel
Language: English
Release date: 2019

💍The Plot:  After the challenging period in the past, Nick and Grace build their new life happily. Until one day. Nick proposes to Grace to marry him, and Grace says ‘yes’ happily. But after that, Nick disappears without a trace. Grace plunges into her investigation that appears to be full of new questions and dangers.

💍The Writing Style: This is the third novel of this amazing author. As well as the previous ones, it’s easy to read and can be read in one sitting. Emma Curtis is a master of brilliant and cleverly written psychological thrillers. Characters’ emotions and feelings are always depicted perfectly and make me worry about them from the first pages. There are a lot of unexpected turns and twists full of tension and emotions. Numerous episodes that include deep thoughts and reflections of the characters are absolutely addictive. These episodes are always my fave ones.

💍The Characters: The number of characters is numerous. As always, all of them are portrayed superbly in all aspects. I felt emotionally connected to them and even started hating some of them from the first pages.

🙈Warnings: Death of a child, molestation of a teenager, murder attempt, grief, anxiety

💙My Favorite Quote: “We all have things we can’t escape, things we regret, things we can’t undo. You have to learn to live with it…”

💙Would I read other books by this author:  Sure!

Nick has just proposed to Grace when he goes for a walk and disappears.
Grace thinks she knew him but as she seeks answers more and more is revealed about Nick. He has a scret. A tragedy which happened in his past. Was he to blame or were others to blame and what will happen when the past meets the future?

Grace and Nick have just got engaged but he has just disappeared. Left with her daughter, an overbearing ex partner, Nick’s parents who have moved in and cause Grace absolute hell. There’s so much going on and all Grace wants to do is find Nick.

Nick’s story involves childhood friends who make his summer hell which could impact his adult life. This was a good solid read and although it took me a little while to get into it I really enjoyed it. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I am an Emma Curtis novice and I was so impressed with this outstanding psychological thriller, although I have had another of this fabulous author’s books - One Little Mistake - on my Kindle for a while. The premise of The Night You Left beckoned to me and I knew that I had to read this novel!

The Night You Left definitely did not disappoint. It had everything I would expect from a psychological thriller - a great plot, well-drawn characters and terrific pacing.

Even though I have read quite a few books with a similar premise to this one - a missing partner, unexposed secrets, many lies and several twists, so I began this book in the knowledge of what was to come. This novel has also been a great delight, full of drama, betrayal and fascinating characters, whether they were loved or hated and unexpected outcomes. There was oodles of suspense and it was definitely an enthralling reading experience that had me hooked throughout.

I loved the shock factor and twisting plots, making this extremely difficult to put down. I really appreciated the smooth writing style of Emma Curtis and it was easy to connect with the characters - to imagine them, sympathise with them, love or hate them.

The great reveal was fulfilling and unexpected. The Night You Left was everything I wanted in what was a pretty special psychological thriller.

I am already looking forward to my next read by Emma Curtis.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Random House UK, Transworld Publishers via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

"When Grace’s fiancé vanishes without a trace the night after proposing, her life is turned upside down. But has Nick walked out on her, or is he in danger?

As Grace desperately searches for answers, it soon becomes clear that Nick wasn’t the uncomplicated man she thought she knew. And when she uncovers a hidden tragedy from his childhood, she realises an awful truth: that you can run from your past – but your secrets will always catch up with you . . . "

Filled with suspense this thriller keeps you hooked until the end!

Grace and Nick seem like your average couple - a house, jobs, a dog and Grace's daughter from a previous relationship.

When one moment changes both their lives - the night Nick left. This had me filled with who, what, why's and the writing style made me eager to find out more.
Grace searches for Nick and after alerting the police they don't seem that worried - even though he vanished the night after he proposed. What makes a seemingly average guy dissappearance?

Kept me captivated with the cleverly written plot as Grace delves into Nick's history as his past meets his present with the turn up of two people within days of each other from his past.

I really warmed to the character of Grace - she came across as strong, determined to find out the truth and clearly loves Nick and her daughter. Yet she has secrets of her own she wants to keep in her past which even 3/4 way through I don't yet know.

The story mixes perfectly between the past and the present and is centred around a family holiday from Nick's childhood that no one can forget. A tragedy that those concerned never got over, the story is told from the perspective of various characters and is peppered with twists keeping the ending hidden.

I didnt guess the ending and happily got taken where the author was leading me.... Or so I thought.

Impossible to put down

My thanks to Random House U.K. Transworld Publishing/Black Swan for an eARC via NetGalley of Emma Curtis’ ‘The Night You Left’ in exchange for an honest review. As it was already published when I came to read it, I elected to purchase its very reasonably priced Kindle/Audible combination.

Grace and Nick have been together for seven years and Nick has been helping Grace to raise her daughter, Lottie. Earlier on ‘Day Zero’ (Saturday 14 April 2018) Nick had asked Grace to marry him and she had accepted. Yet that evening Nick went out for a walk and didn’t return. Grace had thought it was odd he hadn’t taken their dog, Toffee, with him. By the middle of the night she is becoming anxious....

I am going to not say anything more about its plot to avoid possible spoilers but will say that it is a rollercoaster of a domestic noir/psychological thriller with plenty of twists. It did start slowly but pretty soon I was completely hooked and couldn’t put it down. I was happy that I had a quiet Sunday to settle in and just enjoy the ride.

While this is my first experience of Emma Curtis’ writing, I plan to look into her previous novels and keep an eye out for her future books.

This book is fantastic and I couldn't put it down!

Grace and Nick have been together for 7 years. On the night he proposes, he disappears. Grace is sure that something has happened to him and sets out to find answers.

The story flits between the current time and back in 2000 when Nick would been 16 years old. His family along with two others are holidaying together and a tragedy happens. The two stories tie together really well and kept me guessing right til the end.

It was a good few chapters before I started to get into this one. The characters are a little wooden and not much chemistry between them but I soon found myself binging the book
