From USA Today Bestselling author Khardine Gray comes a sexy, delightfully devilish, seductive second chance Mafia Romance. Be prepared to take a walk on the dark side.
Claudius
Rule #1 of being mafia boss- Trust no one.
Rule # 2- Keep your friends and enemies damn close. In the underground world, friends and enemies could be the same thing. Don’t let them know who you love…
My story started out with a guy who liked a girl.
She looked like an angel to him.
I was the guy, Ava the angel.
But… my life turned into this world where I got married to her twin sister and Ava hated me.
Then I got caught in a game with the devil I didn’t want to play.
My enemies used my weaknesses against me, and killed my wife.
Ava could have died too so I stayed away.
The universe, however, had other ideas and threw her right back in my path.
An angel like her didn’t belong in the dark world of a Mafia boss.
I know that, except, I’m selfish.
I should leave her alone, but I can’t.
The problem is …history is repeating itself, and there’s an enemy in my circle.
It’s the same game as before and this time losing could get her killed.
Ava
Avoid him…
That was the most sensible thing to do.
Ten years ago, when I first met Claudius, I knew he was trouble.
He’d made me love’s fool and broke my heart in so many ways when he married my sister.
So, what was I doing running back into the arms of a man I shouldn’t be with?
Coincidence reunited us, but my heart did the rest.
My heart stifled the voice inside that told me to run away.
My heart made me selfish...
I wanted him for myself.
I knew I shouldn’t be with him, but I couldn’t leave him alone.
That very thing could be my downfall.
This isn’t like any other second chance romance you’ve read before…

This was my first book by this author. It didn't do it for me, which is apparently an unpopular opinion, but I'll try more of the series at some point because I think I could potentially like this author's stuff.
A lot of things frustrated me in this book, but nothing so intensely as Marissa, and how sympathetically she was depicted. What she did wasn't just devious mean girl shit.
I also felt uncomfortable with Claudius's relationship to Marissa in general. I get that Claudius warmed to Marissa out of a sense of responsibility, and I don't blame him for that, but it sounded like he was effective. He said he had to learn to love her, but at the end of the day, the point is that he had, in fact, successfully learned to love her. Claudius loved Marissa. He at one point even felt hopeful about their future, all while Ava was still out there, alone and heartbroken.
He was able to go through and engagement, wedding and marriage to Marissa right in front of Ava, and Ava could sense nothing amiss. She remarked several times that they seemed so happy. In the flashback scenes between Marissa and Claudius, he didn't seem tortured by his commitment to her, or by his enduring love for Ava. He didn't seem like he was acting. My point is that he seemed like he got over Ava, and like he loved Marissa instead. And it didn't seem like it took very long.
How long before he started fucking Marissa? How could he do that without feeling some sense of betrayal toward Ava? How strong could his feelings for Ava have been, really?
Ava on the other hand, couldn't get over him and her heartbreak after a decade, even when she thought he was a piece of shit that knocked up and proposed to her twin sister the minute she left the country.
And here's the other side of this: how could Ava feel no insecurity about any of this? Shit, I felt insecurity on her behalf.
If Ava did feel any of things or hash them out with Claudius, we weren't treated to it. In fact, we weren't given much indication that they talked at all. About anything. Once they reunited and he explained the truth, they had sex, and then had more sex, and so it would continue until some work obligation forced them to stop for a while. Ava talked more to Claudius's brother's wife than she did Claudius. The only evidence of their connection extending beyond lust was the flashback scenes where they met and he asked her out. That's it really. I love a good sex scene, but I wanted to know that they had more than lust between them. Instead I kept hearing about her massive tits.
Other than that, it was smaller, stray observations. For instance, Claudius kept dodging bullets. People can't dodge bullets. There's suspending disbelief and there's casually giving your characters a superpower.
Also, it seemed like Claudius was something of an ineffectual leader. And i wish the character/motivations of were developed a little more.
Anyway, I ran into some problems with this book, but I do think I could like this author in general. I'm curious about the stories of some of the other characters.
Claudius didn't seem to be the boss, I felt as though he was too soft for that role. I don't think that he redeemed himself after sleeping with her twin and the marrying her because it was the 'right' thing to do AND then staying with her after the child died. Where was he when Ava was dealing with her sister dying and dealing with the shock that she was kidnapped and almost died too? He was nowhere to be seen. The twin was killed off and I feel like we didn't really get an explanation as to why she betrayed her sister in such a horrible way. Claudius didn't fight for Ava and walked all over her and being the doormat that she is, she let him. Ava had a massive opening for her restaurant but put someone whom she hadn't seen in 10 years first.

This was a pretty good read. Claudius is forced to marry Ava’s twin sister but he really loves Ava when his wife is killed Claudius still doesn’t go to Ava because that would put her life in danger. When Ava comes back years later Claudius watches her from afar he is the head of Chicago Mafia branch and his life is dangerous. This was a pretty good read although I thought it was long at times. This was a good read I liked both of this character's Ava is a strong independent woman Claudius is a hot sexy mob boss I also liked the four. These two had a lot of hot chemistry I have read this author before. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
If I were Ava I want to ask Claudius , he loves Marissa or not?
If I were Ava I want to ask Claudius, If Marissa doesn't die Can we be together?
If I were Ava, I would move on.
*** Spoiler ***
for me I was confused by Claudius's feelings for Ava. He acted like he loved her so much, she was his only love. But the former part between Claudius and Marissa when the two lost their son ,He chose to be with her. I know he might want to cheer her up, but for me, if Claudius really didn't love Marissa. He shouldn't give her hope. but he takes care of her and tries to love her and succeeds, he feels for her Even though he defended that Didn't feel the same as Ava. But it's enough answer for me. how he felt for Marissa and will start over together
At first, I thought Claudius loved Ava very much. So he chose to help her instead of Marissa, but in fact, he just met her first, that's all.
If he had to choose between Marissa and Ava I'm not sure Claudius would choose Ava. Even when he was fighting an enemy He still misses Marisa all the time. think of her words
Even if Marissa is dead but I don't feel pity I think it's fate, Ava didn't do anything wrong. Why did Marissa hurt her? because of selfishness And Claudius disappointed me. If Marissa hadn't died I also think the two are suitable for each other. and Ava should move on
I feel bad reading the past part. Because I think Claudius loves Marissa and care so much. And I feel very sorry for Ava.
And for me, I think Claudius didn't love Ava enough. to fight for love He chose not to tell the truth. and let her go for whatever reason I'm confused anyway.
This book makes me so sad because the heroine deserved a man who only loved her, not her manipulative, selfish twin sister. One of my biggest pet peeves in books is when the author goes on and on about a past lover and how special they were. We don’t care about their love story, I want the HEROINE to be SPECIAL!
Claudius Rule #1 of being mafia boss- Trust no one. Rule # 2- Keep your friends and enemies damn close. In the underground world, friends and enemies could be the same thing. My story started out with a guy who liked a girl. She looked like an angel to him. I was the guy, Ava the angel. But I got caught in a game I didn’t want to play. A game with the devil that destroyed me. My life turned into this world where I got married to her twin sister and Ava hated me. The situation became my weakness when my enemies used it against me, and killed my wife. Ava could have died too so I stayed away from her. It was safer that way. Year in, year out I tell myself the same thing, and I stay away. But the universe had other ideas, and threw her right back in my path. I can’t have her. An angel like her doesn’t belong in the darkness of my world. I know this, except, I’m selfish. I should leave her alone, but I can’t. Ten years ago, when I’d first met him, I knew the man was trouble, but I didn’t listen. He’d made me love’s fool and broke my heart in so many ways when he married my sister. That was a lesson to learn. So, what was I doing running back into the arms of a man I shouldn’t be with? We were like darkness and light. Different. Too different. Coincidence reunited us, but my heart did the rest. My heart blinded me to sense and logic, and stifled the voice inside that told me to run away. My heart made me selfish...I wanted him for myself. I knew I shouldn’t be with him, but I couldn’t leave him alone. That very thing could be my downfall. This isn’t like any other second chance romance you’ve read before

REVIEW: 4.5 stars--DIRTY HEARTS is the first instalment in Khardine Gray’s contemporary, adult GANGSTERS AND DOLLS erotic, Mafia romance series-a spin off from the author’s THE ACCIDENTAL MAFIA QUEEN series. This is thirty-eight year old, Chicago Mafia Don Claudius Morientz, and thirty-one year old, chef Ava De Luca’s story line. DIRTY HEARTS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous series is revealed where necessary. Caudius was first introduced in The Accidental Mafia Queen.
NOTE: DIRTY HEARTS contains scenes of graphic violence that may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Claudius and Ava) DIRTY HEARTS is a second chance story line focusing on thirty-eight year old, Chicago Mafia Don Claudius Morientz, and thirty-one year old, chef Ava De Luca. Ten years earlier Claudius Morientz fell in love with Ava De Luca; two years later their world fell apart; another year would pass wherein Ava’s twin sister would be murdered in retaliation against the Chicago mob leaving Claudius and Ava struggling to move beyond the who, how and why. Fast forward to present day, at which point, Claudius continues to protect the only woman he has ever loved, a woman who will once again become the target of Claudius’ enemies. What ensues is the rekindling romance between Claudius and Ava, and the potential fall-out as Ava becomes collateral damage in a world ruled by ruthless tactics, guns, murder and vengeance.
Claudius has never stopped loving Ava De Luca. Having married her twin sister for sins of the past, Claudius struggles with what happened and why. Ava never knew the real reason behind Claudius’ betrayal, a betrayal that would once again destroy Ava’s heart, only this time directed at her deceased twin. As Claudius’ enemies draw near, our ‘hero’ battles between head and heart in an effort to protect the woman he loves, protection that comes with betrayal and revenge.
The relationship between Claudius and Ava is one of second chances; a rekindling romance between two people destroyed by power, control, manipulation and jealousy. The sexual attraction is palpable; their chemistry is steamy and hot. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Ava’s best friend and business partner Kelly. We are reintroduced to Claudius’ protection detail known as The Four: Dante, Gio, and brothers Jude and Alex; Claudius brother Lucian and Amelia (The Accidental Mafia Queen), and their father, former Don, Marcus Morientz. The requisite evil has many faces.
DIRTY HEARTS is story of family, friendship, betrayal and loss; of vengeance, hatred, resentment and rage. The premise is gritty and raw; the romance is passionate and seductive; the characters are colorful, dynamic, charismatic and strong.
I bought this book a few years ago but forgot about it so it’s been on my TBR for quite a while. Unfortunately, I have little good to say about it.
It has major ick vibes. For example, the H (Claudius) was the family peen 🍆 who ended up marrying both identical twin sisters. He firstly dated the h (Ava) and fell madly in love with her, but then married her evil twin (Marissa) after she tricked him into bed whilst he was very drunk (ie nonconsensual sex aka sexual assault aka rape) and conveniently fell pregnant. Then the evil twin losses the baby and is later murdered. All her evil machinations are magically forgiven and forgotten and she receives sainthood.
Did Claudius turn around and regret marrying evil Marissa? Nope, because he learned to love her and planned a future with her. Yep, he loved Ava so much that he wanted to stay married to her twin sister instead and didn’t feel guilty about destroying Ava’s life. And where was Ava, the supposed love of his life, whilst the H was happily building a life with Marissa, you ask? Well, she was off licking her wounds, playing nice as if though her heart wasn’t ripped out when both her soulmate and identical twin sister betrayed her in the worst way possible. She pretended to be okay with the situation, wasn’t resentful towards Marissa, and was therefore the biggest fucking doormat in history. IMO, Ava should’ve gone nuclear on Marissa’s ass and gone no contact with the disloyal couple.
What bothered me most about the story is that the H accepted his fate and never once fought for Ava after Marissa raped him. He never questioned how Marissa got pregnant by him or how her pregnancy and their subsequent marriage would impact Ava. What’s even worse is that he was supposed to be a tough Mafia guy, but actually came across as an inconstant, spineless, dim-witted pussy who was bested by a young woman (Marissa) 7 years his junior.
There are so many inconsistencies and discrepancies in the story that it often had me guffawing. Ava is supposedly a chef who trained in France and runs a Michelin star restaurant, but in one instance she’s trying to develop a new Bolognese recipe by putting chilli in it like it’s never been done before in all the history of Italian cuisine. And one of the famous go-to desserts in her exclusive restaurant is pancakes. Not crepes…pancakes. LMAO. 🤣🤣
Holy shit, this was the dumbest shit I’ve read in a while.

Again the Don who "owns" Chicago is out played. Ava was a bit much at times....I don't need anyone, I can take care of myself...how does that work out for you when your almost kidnapped outside your restaurant or when you were actually taken for a second time. Maybe stop whining and trying to be tough and just accept that you are in danger and really cannot defend yourself. At least Amelia can fight and shoot to defend herself. What I find the most disappointing is that Claudis knew there was a rat in his team and for 8 years did nothing to flush them out. Weakness!
I enjoyed Claudius and Ava’s story. It was messy as hell yall! There was great drama and angst, but also there was a lot of passion and romance in this tale as well. There’s hard choices to be made but I liked the two of these MCs together. They made a lot sense to me. Their meet cute was adorable and I was hooked from the beginning!
Claudius, Mafia Boss, was just such a good guy and it makes sense why he was the boss in my eyes. He was ruthless when he needed to be but he wasn’t malicious and cruel. I could see how he was really in such turmoil over what happened between Ava and her sister. It was just really hard to see him have to make those tough decisions. Marrying Marisa was the worst decision ever but people make mistakes; Claudius in marrying her, but I’ll never forgive Marissa for what she did! I also really liked to see him as boss, try to navigate the rat in his outfit.
Ava, chef and restaurant owner, was just so sweet! But she had a lot of fire to her as well. I like the fact that she was such a boss in the kitchen and also with her restaurant businesses. Her twin was absolutely despicable and I don’t think I could have been as loving or considerate of Marissa if I had been in the same position. She really was an Angel Doll.
This book was spicy and the connection between Ava and Claudius was so intense! Really enjoyed the passion between these two!
I would definitely recommend this one to my dark mafia lovers and those who love Angsty love stories. I’m looking forward to Dante’s story next!
Although this is a new series, I would recommend reading the Accidental Mafia Queen series first as it gives us the beginning of all the changes that led to the story in this book. However, even without reading those books 📚 it's pretty easy to follow the tale of betrayal and heartbreak that this one is based on. It has a ton of mafia action, it's a little spicy, and has a morally grey mmc that absolutely aforesaid the fmc, who's sweet and delicate. The narration was really good, too.
Got to around 50% and stopped because I don’t like characters who comment on other peoples appearances. Twice the guy in this book speaks in a nasty way about woman with lip fillers or woman who have had plastic surgery. I didn’t sit right with me. I didn’t like that at all. And it put me off. I would have carried on if that didn’t happen twice. The story is actually good. Shame really. Maybe this author doesn’t like woman with lip fillers. Or woman who have duck lips.
This is a spin-off from the Accidental Mafia Queen series. A great start to a new mafia series and a second chance romance story. A fantastic read! Claudius Morientz is now the new mafia boss of the Rossi crime family after the death of Raphael Rossi because his brother, Lucious released his controlling interest. Claudius, his father and the famous four run the Chicago territory with an iron fists. He is reeling about the death of his wife after 7 years and seeking revenge and unexplained answers of occurrences with his plan. Ava DeLuca is the sister to her identical twin Marissa...with two polar opposite of personality( extrovert/introvert). Ava and Claudius was completely into one another until a trick becomes the cause of the broken relationship leaving Ava devastating. Ava attended a culinary school and is the owner of her family restaurant and seeking to expand the family business. Her idea area to expand belongs to Claudius but the past is preventing any encounter with each other. But as they test their boundaries of business option, fate takes an unexpected turn, secrets revealed, old enemies threatening their lives and chance at a second chance of love… The story is captivating, suspense and painful history combine into a complex tale of betrayal, jealousy, dark secrets, deadly twists and turns with so many WTH moments. Will the secrets tear them apart or bring them closer together. Who is the traitor(s) in the organization? What is the traitor personal gain? ****I voluntarily received an Advance Review Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review****
I have already read books 2 & 3 before I read this one, since they were part of booksprout reviews, so I got a glimpse of Ava and Claudias. When I got this one, then was reading some reviews, I turned leery about reading this since he loves the good twin and the evil twin portrayed the good one to trap Claud into some kind of relationship if there was a baby. I get Italian men like to have their sons born legit into the world but he didn’t love the evil one, and said twin blackmailed him into a marriage by telling Claud that don’t matter if he don’t want the kid, she does... that right there is a omen, Marissa wanted something of his that she will always hold over her good twin’s head, Claudius’ child, even better his son... I blame both Marissia and Claud of they bad luck that happened since the evil twin forced Ava to her travels for their family’s restaurant. When Ava finally heard the whole truth about her sister’s marriage and how it started will tear the woman apart but she’ll forgive Claud easier then she does her sister, but when the past comes a snatching and manipulating rivals will have history repeat itself but this time the bomb is attached to Ava. Can Claudius get to her before the time per is set or will he lose the real love of his life and himself??
Couple of things upset me and one was the fact that Claudius stayed with the conniving, bitchy sister even after she lost the baby. He stayed in the marriage after there was a way out. There was never a mention if they slept together as a married couple before, during or after all the lies was exposed. Ava took the news that they were a couple after she herself had been with him close to 2 years prior like a blasted doormat lying at the front door for everyone to wipe and walk their feet all over. Twins or not that was the ultimate betrayal regardless of how she died it excuses nothing. Their parents never questioned all that nonsense that happened and needs a frying pan to their heads. Now on to the story at hand. Loved it. The unpredictability of everything was eyebrow raising and the characters were on the love them or hate them list. Can’t wait to see if all secondary players of “The Four” will get a novel of their own. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I actually liked the book and the main characters. That sister was to much for me. I wouldved like to know would he have stayed with her after everything she did if she didn't die? I'm glad they didn't string me along for them to end all the past issues at the end. I would like to hear more about them and lic/Amelia

Another solid book from this author; I'm so glad I stumbled upon her work. This one is a pretty light mafia book, which is a perfect choice for an audiobook since the writing is 'easy' to understand and doesn't require 100% attention during the listening. I recommend reading this after The Accidental Mafia Queen series, which is basically an introduction to this world and especially the the brothers—Luc and Claudius.
I really enjoyed how the story overlapped into this book, giving us a glimpse into what happened to Luc and Amelia, as well as how Claudius was handling his new role as the mafia boss. I found his love story with the twins Ava and Marissa very interesting, although it did read as a soap opera at times. Some of the things that happened made me want to rip my hair out and ask: why?!
To sum up the plot of this book: Claudius meets and falls for the 'innocent' twin Ava, but the 'evil' twin Marissa wants him because she hates losing, especially to her sister. After Ava and Claudius argue and break up, she waits until he is completely wasted and poses as her sister to get him to sleep with her. She then gets pregnant, and Claudius marries her for the sake of the child that she sadly loses at some point during the pregnancy. Sometime later, the main villain of the book kidnaps the sisters and makes Claudius choose which one he wants to save. Marissa dies, and Claudius feels guilty and decides to stay away from Ava until they reconnect years later—which is the starting point of the main plot of the book.
While I did enjoy this story, there were several things that annoyed, or rather baffled me. For instance, Claudius was almost too kind for his own good. While I understood why he chose to marry Marissa in the first place, it made no sense for him to stay with her and even attempt to love her after they lost the baby. The woman sexually assaulted him, for f*ck's sake. She literally waited until he was too wasted to comprehend who he was with, posed as her sister, and slept with him after he repeatedly said 'no' earlier. Not only that, he lost the love of his life because of her. How he could put it all aside even after the only thing binding them—their baby—died is beyond me.
Marissa was also very underdeveloped in my opinion. The author tried to redeem her, but it all came out of the blue. I didn't understand why she suddenly felt guilt and had a change of heart. I felt like this could have been explained better instead of being kept mostly off-page.
Other than that, I really enjoyed the plot and the action aspect of the book, as well as the side characters and the hints of possible pairings in the future books. There were moments that surprised me—I genuinely couldn't guess which brother was the rat until the very last moment. The steamy parts were amazing as usual in this author's books, even if some dialogue choices were a bit... cheesy. Still, I had a blast reading (or rather listening to) this. Can't wait to find out what went down between Alex and the quirky hacker, too!
My rating: 4/5

Ok, so let me tell you a secret, I never really got into mafia romance. I never really liked it. So when I saw this book in a reading group, three things pulled at me to read it...1) the cover because it is gorgeous 2) the series title Gangsters and Dolls and 3) in the blurb the one line that caught my reading strings “ This isn’t like any other second chance romance you’ve read before…”. I’m always down for a second chance novel. I saw it was a spin-off of her Mafia Queen Series, but saw that it was a stand-alone. Oh holy hell in a hand basket, I’m so glad I took a chance on this book. It captured my attention right in the Prologue, I read it in one sitting and read a couple of chapters over because I was siting there, and asking myself if that really happen. Claudius and Ava pulled at my heart strings, you felt their love, pain, power, and most terrifying moments. Ava is this strong, sweet, woman that has been put through the ringer. Claudius is this powerful mafia boss, who has a heart of gold. I also adored the four and Luc’s guys (Claudius brother), I have a favorite, but will not tell no one, because, hey no spoilers from me. I love the storyline, and the plot was so unpredictable, you were actually following Claudius decisions making them with him, instead of guessing and theorizing what will happen next, which is a big plus in my book. I’m so looking forward to the next installment and will definitely, keeping buying these books. So I applaud you Ms. Khardine Gray for making me a liar, saying I will never ever again, read a mafia book or actually loving one. Thank you for writing this amazing book! .
We first meet Claudius Morientz in the Accidental Mafia Queen series, and I can't wait for the rest of the Gangsters and Dolls series!!!
Claudius Morientz is the new mafia boss for the Rossi family. His father still helps as an advisor and his brother Lucian is out of the family, but when family needs you, you don't turn away. Claudius has his father for most everything and the Four to help run Chicago, but when things continue to happen that only an insider would know, who can he trust but his own family. Reliving the death of his wife and their relationship is hard for him, but necessary for Ava and the love their share. But what will Claudius give up or miss when he wants Ava so much? Will Ava see past his "job"? Will he ever get revenge for the murders of his family members?
Ava is going through life the best she can with the hand that was dealt her. But her only regret is not forcing Claudius to be honest with her at all times. But when her twin sister, Marissa who is also Claudius's wife is taken and she is taken as well, the game is meant to have a loser, but at what risk and cost. She loves Claudius will her whole heart and always has, even when he did the unthinkable to her. But when the truth is out, can she see the truth? Will it set them free? What about the uneasy feeling she gets around some of the Four? Will expanding her business give her the second chance she needs?
This story is full of suspense, drama, revenge, betrayal, dark secrets, twists and turns, love, lust, romance, jealousy and so much more! You will not want to put this book down. I received an ARC of this book from the author and purchased it!!!
A HEART-FELT romance that will curl your toes! Using flashbacks liberally, author Khardine Gray’s newest Mafia Romance is trip through the halls of every Mafia stereotype known but presented in a way that makes them feel fresh, new, and unexpected. Kudos to Ms. Gray for putting a fresh face and unique approach that had this reader not only intrigued but also had me so invested that real-world issues became secondary to finding out how Ava and Claudius could possibly build the happy ending they kept messing up. Gray’s prose is descriptive and easy to read, but attention to the subheadings and the point of view is important in this novel. The characterization is phenomenal and the plotline complexities rage from the subtle to the “in-your-face” action that made this love-story feel more like a page-turning action-adventure at times. Make no mistake, however, “DIRTY HEARTS” is first and foremost a WONDERFUL love story that is complicated by Claudius’s Mafia ties, Ava’s culinary goals, and subsequent family drama. “DIRTY HEARTS” is a phenomenal story and well worth the price of admission. There is darkness, violence and lots of STEAM so those under the age of 18 need not apply. For me, “DIRTY HEARTS” is going into the FAVORITES collection on my Kindle. So, if you like to dabble in shades of dark, “DIRTY HEARTS” is the first of a five part-series that promises toes will curl and so much more. I STRONGLY suggest you purchase your copy of “DIRTY HEARTS” today! Happy pages! 😉
While I really liked it, & for the most part I enjoyed the characters, I couldn’t understand how Claudius could do what he did. This book was frustratingly infuriating & I wanted to pull my hair out. I think it’s the first time I found myself torn between rooting for the couple, but also thinking the mmc didn’t deserve her. Ava’s twin pretended to be her, took advantage of Claudius when he was drunk, got pregnant & begged him not to tell Ava the truth. He claimed he loved Ava so much, yet he agreed to keep the secret & made it look like he genuinely wanted to be w/Marissa & married her. I understood wanting to be in his child’s life, but he didn’t have to marry the woman who tricked him. And even after they lost the baby, when he could’ve walked away, he didn’t, he stayed & wanted to try to have a marriage w/her & love her!! WTF. The only thing that kept me reading was there were only a few chapters where it was in the past w/Claudius & Marissa before she was killed. The book mainly opens in the present day, 7 years after Marissa was killed. While I liked the book, & for the most part the plot, what ruined it for me was Claudius wanting a real marriage & wanting to love Marissa- even after losing the baby. The woman was a jealous, vile person who ruined what he had w/Ava & him even marrying her for the baby was disgusting. But to stay, nope. I couldn’t. He could’ve been an amazing father & still be w/Ava, not marry Marissa.
Khardine Gray writes magnificent books with tantalizing stories, characters that literally jump off the page, and lovers who are meant for each other without question, but some part of that story is missing in Dirty Hearts. Claudius is the mafia don who's been in love with Ava forever, but he's never been explicit in telling her that he loves her. Ava's jealousy-ridden, evil twin, Marissa, waits until Ava leaves the country to spring her trap. She waits until Claudius is dead drunk and, pretending to be Ava, seduces him and becomes pregnant. Claudius has a "momentary" sense of shame, but marries her for the sake of the child, but also because she's "the mother." When the baby is stillborn, he doesn't breathe deeply and think that now he can love the woman he's always wanted...nope! He decides to stay married to her because.... um, uh, I'm still trying to figure that one out. Claudius doesn't really hold anything against her for betraying her sister and I lost all respect for this cheating ahole. It gets worse and I simply plodded through to the end, hoping that Claudius could redeem himself. Spoiler...He didn't. He "tried to love" Marissa. He never connected with Ava, even though he loooves her. He stays hidden from her because he loooves her! I hope this is a one-off for me because Khardine Gray is a tremendous writer, so I'll definitely pick up the next book in the series!
Bad Boy mafia, good guy protector and a second chance for what’s right
Dirty Hearts (Gangsters and Dolls Book 1) by Khardine Gray has all the feels and then some! By then some I’m referring to all the breath-stealing drama, edge of your seat action, gripping danger, thrilling chemistry and the deep emotional connection of Ava and Claudius. I adore second chance romance! Despite his tough and mean exterior, Claudius is a romantic at heart and only for Ava. I am an absolute fan of this author and she has delighted me again with a fantastic story, exciting plot and spectacular characters. I had the pleasure of revisiting characters from the Mafia Queen series playing prominent roles in this book, but it’s really standalone in case you haven’t read that series yet. I really enjoyed how she seamlessly blended their past and present throughout. Claudius and Ava will stay with me just as Luc and Amelia have, not to mention many other characters from her other books. Overall a wonderfully well written book that leaves the reader craving more. And I am craving more even with the fitting and deserving, decade past due HEA for Claudius and Ava. Well done! I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.
a WONDERFUL love story that is complicated ... main characters Cladius and Ava.... I really like this author she always delivers ... Claudius is the mafia boss, Ava is the love of his life and is the owner of her pa's resteraunt. “DIRTY HEARTS” is a phenomenal story and well worth the read... There is darkness, violence and lots of STEAM so those under the age of 18 need not apply hahaha... if you like to dabble in shades of dark, this is the first of a five-part-series that promises toes will curl and so much more. I STRONGLY suggest you get your copy of “DIRTY HEARTS” and start reading today ........ Claudius and Ava will pull at your heart strings, (well they did mine ) you will feel their love, pain, power, and most terrifying moments. Ava is this strong, sweet, woman that has been put through the ringer. Claudius is this powerful mafia boss, who has a heart of gold. I also adored the four and Luc (Claudius brother), and Luc's guys Donnie and Saul.... I have a favorite, because.. well no spoilers from me. I love the storyline, and the plot was so unpredictable, you were actually following Claudius decisions making them with him, instead of guessing and theorizing what will happen next, I’m so looking forward to the next installment ... Awesome read..
This was my first book by this author. I got the book on he free Kindle day. I did mostly enjoy it. A lot of repeateding lines, super annoying. Claudius and Luc's dad calling the ladies "pet" was a major no no. That's really a bad nick name. Claudius calling both Marissa and Ava "doll" was another ick moment. It was ok when he called Ava "angel doll" but when he dropped the angle and called her doll like he did to Marissa in the flashback moments. If that was my SO I would have flipped 💩 on him. And the fact that Claudius was willing to stay with Marissa after everything (I won't say what everything is to avoid spoilers). But no, out of all the books I've read Claudius is by far the worst male lead. I didn't even like him, just more like tolerated him. I'll read the other books because Gio and Dante especially peeked my interest. There was some mistake that was missed by editing and ARC readers.
Chapter 3 page 36……”I’d gotten here from eight this morning….” I think it’ll make more sense if it said “at” instead of “from”.
Chapter 32 page 389….the G in Goliath needs to be capitalized.
Chapter 32 page 398…..the L in like needs to be lower case.
Claudius taught her a lesson when he cast her aside four years ago for her sister because she was a better fit, she may want closure, but he was the don of Chicago. Ava owns Delizioso with her business partner, Kelly, she was moving on and wanted to expand the restaurant opening another branch, then in each city., Ava knows exactly who it is wanting to see her at the restaurant, seeing him everything she felt came flooding back. Their story is messy, and she’s not the same person she was when they met. Claudius can’t believe what Ava said made all logic of being with her go, everything was exactly how the lies he told her made it look, but he was scared of losing her forever. Having her in his bed made him realise, she made him want to live. All he knows is Ava deserves the truth and he hopes she doesn’t hate him; he can’t fight wanting her anymore, with everything going on can he keep her safe even if it means keeping his unknown enemies close, will she give him a second chance when everything comes out.
Claudius My story started out with a guy who liked a girl and she looked like an angel to him. I was the guy, But my life turned into this world where I got married to her twin sister and Ava hated me. Then I got caught in a game with the devil I didn’t want to play and my enemies used my weaknesses against me, and killed my wife. Ava could have died too so I stayed away.
Ava Avoid him.
Wow what an amazing book this was to read from the beginning to end. I felt so sorry for what the two characters went through, the story line was fabulous and made the book really sucked me in. Khardine Gray has gone and done it again and written another fabulous book and I would highly recommend it.
