For my summer reading assignment, I chose Look Beyond the Clouds by Michelle Gano. This book has many helpful daily exercises that will help new and experienced teachers alike in the classroom as well as in life in general. Each paragraph is followed by self-reflection questions as well as a “Take Action” list.

Look Beyond the Clouds is a cross between a self-help book and a teacher’s success guide as well as a motivational book. The author refers to her personal experience as a new teacher in a Title 1 school where she did not have any shared experiences with her students and how a teacher took her under her wing to guide her in her career.

I found the self-reflect questions helpful in reflecting on past experiences. My favorite part of the book was when she talked about looking at the positive in every day regardless of what happened in the classroom. Although we are truly blessed in our school, there are times when lessons do not go the way they were planned. Yet, there is always something positive that occurred that day.

There is a chapter that covers the choice between being positive and negative. The author categorizes people as those that chose to be either positive or negative. She suggests that the reader spend more time with people who are positive, kind and good listeners.

Some interesting suggestions that I will try to incorporate into my daily life;
1. Help a teacher.
2. Thank a teacher.
3. Plan and deliver a lesson on gratitude.

The most important take away from this book is to keep a positive attitude, to focus on the positive things that happen in the classroom and to use positive words to describe every day. I found it a useful read. I plan to work on the “Take Action” section during the school year as well as the worksheet that came with the book.

As an elementary teacher myself, I am strongly receptive of any advice to overcome burnout. This book however, though well-intentioned, is preachy and self-absorbed. There are many people with personal challenges and issues (both related to teaching and unrelated) that "just think positively and be positive and positive will come!" simply will not fix. Furthermore, after losing my brother in 9/11, the passage about the author's father being there and promptly returning safely being unbearably hard was was insulting. The balloon metaphor was also very unhealthy - telling someone to 'not bring down people around you with negativity' leads to suppression and internalization, and is really harmful psychologically.
I do agree that mindset is important, but this book comes from an entitled perspective that fails to consider how that entitlement affects the author's sense of reality.

For teacher and for all the parents

I could not put down Michelle’s “Look Beyond the Clouds” from the first chapter. I was inspired by the positivity and creativity that Michelle has. Staying positive is easier said than done. The author shares her experience in a systematic way and gives us tools to be the better version of us when the situation is not ideal. Highly recommended!
