Evelyn Mercer has always had a plan. She lives and breathes the plan. The plan and coffee. Go to law school. Check. Make Law Review. Check. Get competitive internship. Check. Land dream job. Double Check.
That dream job? Yeah, it’s a nightmare, and Evelyn is miserable with a capital M. When she reaches her misery threshold, Evelyn does the unthinkable and deviates from her plan.
Her unexpected new job takes her to Pinehaven Ranch in the middle of nowhere Montana where Evelyn is faced with her biggest obstacle yet. No coffee shops within a 30-mile radius and her new boss’ brother, former rodeo champion Jack Danvers. The three words that best describe Jack are stink, stank, stunning. He is perfection and he inexplicably seems to hate her on sight. But if there is one thing life has taught her, it’s that she still has a lot to learn and Montana is full of surprises.
Emily Mayer is a best-selling author and a book lover with a capital L. When she isn’t writing, you can usually find her in the kitchen burning dinner with a book in her hand or tucked away in one of her favorite reading spots promising "just five more minutes." In addition to books, Emily is addicted to coffee, dogs, and cat videos. She lives in the Midwest with her husband and dog, both of whom are very good boys.
In a lot of ways, this is like a Mariana Zapata story. It's a single narrator, slow burn, lots of internal dialogue, enigmatic male, initially at odds, and a single explicit sex scene. But saying that it's like Zapata will mislead fans of hers if they're expecting that same intensity and level of emotional conflict.
Evelyn is scrambling a bit in life because her initial plans turned out rather hollow. She didn't like being a lawyer and the executive assistant thing is good, but mostly in a "holding pattern" way. So she's kind of finding herself when her boss drags her to the ranch his family owns. And since she kind of knows that she is, she lets herself explore and experience new things with a delight that I found very engaging. I liked seeing her throw herself into new activities and discover joy in them. And I liked that she was strong enough to be assertive with what she likes about where she came from but isn't willing to let that actually define her. And this may be the first character I've seen with a realistic depiction of debilitating migraines in a book and I think Mayer did a great job simply making it an aspect of her life (that sometimes took it over, but was mostly manageable).
And I really liked Jack, too. The initial misread that lets him be dismissive of Evelyn at first persisted just long enough to be interesting and not so long that I had to believe him a jerk at heart. And I liked how he'd carved out a life for himself in ways that he hadn't originally intended and how he was able to connect with Evelyn in so many ways that were definitely non-obvious from the start. And when he fell in love, he was so very sweet and without losing any of his essential Jack-ness.
So I found this a win and engaging and I love that it worked out so well. Mayer does a fantastic job keeping the story moving and interesting and I particularly liked that she didn't have to resort to artificial conflicts or dark moments when I think most authors would have been tempted to do so. Some of that may be the great secondary characters in and around the ranch. I enjoyed them all and I really hope that at least one of them gets his own story in future.
Which makes this a strong five stars for a surprising debut and an author I hope to see more from. It's a little light and things progress steadily from beginning to end so if you're looking for dramatic gestures or lots of emotional conflict, then you'll likely be disappointed. But I sank in and just enjoyed every low-conflict moment.
A note about Steamy: Like I said, there's a single explicit sex scene, though there's some sexy talk and lead-in as well. Still, this is the low side of my steam tolerance and I think this is another aspect of romance that Mayer got just right.
Everything Girl is a very, very slow burn. The couple barely speak up until the 35% mark. Normally, I would be wanting way more interaction sooner, but I can't even complain because this book was just so entertaining. I think if this wasn't even a romance, I would have still loved this book just as much.
The things that I really enjoyed about this story was the setting. Evelyn travels with her boss, Ben, to his family ranch in Montana to work under the radar since he caused a bit of scandal back in Chicago. There she meets his very grumpy, but sexy brother, Jack, his mom, and fellow ranch hands.
Evelyn is the main star of the show, however the side characters were a big reason I really enjoyed this book. Gabe especially...he needs his own book. Then there were the animals. Hank Williams, the dog; King, the horse; and the goats!
I'm seriously impressed that this is the authors first book. After reading this, you would have thought she has been writing for years. The only thing I wished for, was more of Jack. I would have liked to have gotten more of a feel of what he was thinking. You are really left guessing with the hero.
This was such a fun, low angst book that was very, well written. I am looking forward to more from this author. She will be one to follow to see what she'll brings us next.
There was lots to like about this book, I love a cowboy trope and enemies to lovers is a favorite of mine! Jack the hero gave off plenty of brooding cranky vibes when Evelyn arrived .Evelyn was funny and well liked amongst Jack's family and ranch workers.
Why it didn't reach 4 or even 5 stars for me was that we got too much of Evelyn lusting after jack and Jack scowling to have a complete turn around. Jack decides he wants Evelyn or
It lacked any real story to explain how, why or when Jack fell for her?
He went from him confessing eh when did this falling in love take place. We didn’t get his POV but I don’t think there was enough subtle hints or dialogue to show his feelings until they got together and then it all seemed a bit rushed and meaningless.
So it fell flat on the insta love front and I felt that Evelyn's lack of confidence made her ecstatic this strapping cowboy would want her rather than there been anything real behind their feelings...ya he was good looking but what made her fall for him ... I dunno it just didn't work for me!
OMG, I'm on a roll. Ein wunderbarer Slowburn, ruppiger Love Interest, schönes Setting auf Ranch in Montana, im Gruuuuuunde eigentlich kein großer Plot (entsprechend auch kein großes Drama).
I picked this book on a recommendation from a Mariana Zapata's group so I knew it would be a slow burn and boy I was not disappointed with that. I wasn't disappointed at all, actually.
When I started closing my eyes and wanted to hide because I was embarrassed for Evie’s behaviour as much as she obviously was, I knew I was in for a really good book because that meant I could relate to her. She was a very lovable character, with all her qualities and flaws, insecurities and hidden strengths. Sure, I knew from the start where that was heading, the turns of events weren’t that unexpected, and I was not surprised one bit from Jack’s admission on the reasons behind his behaviours from the start. But that was ok for me. It was a light read and at the same time a much needed one. Because as much as it was a romance all right, it’s also a journey of self-discovery, from how lost you can feel when plans don’t go how you thought they would to finding happiness in the place you expected it the least. It was so much more than a romance, as much in that regard as in the relationships Evie developed with the other characters, Gabe most of all. I loved the banter going on between those two and laughed my ass off countless times thanks to them. Same goes for Ben and Evie. I really dig friendships, and I loved that she had that kind of relationship from the start with Ben.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book. Maybe don’t go there expecting lots of surprises in terms of plot twists (but who does when they pick up a romance book, seriously? The primary reason we love them is because they end up the way they do) but go there for a light read, one that will probably make you blush and want to hide if you connect to Evelyn, but that will also make you laugh and fall in love with that land and its people in Montana.
Also, I'd love to see Gabe again in another book. Just to put it out there.
So, I had a very weird reaction to this book. During the first half, I was absolutely loving it. I liked the writing style, I enjoyed the characters, I adored the setting (I have a thing for Montana, which has only gotten worse since I visited the state two years ago) and I was excited about where it was all going since I love a good slow burn and this was shaping up to be a great one.
And then ... it sort of all fell apart, and I don't think I'm 100% sure of the reason behind it. I felt like a balloon that had been perfectly inflated during the first half of the book and then a needle was stuck in it and it completely shriveled. I think it's mostly because the hero, Jack, does a complete emotional U-turn around the halfway point and I couldn't find much of an explanation for it. The heroine is constantly confused because of this and I couldn't help but share her sentiment.
This is definitely another case where first person narration is a limitation because even though I understood most of Jack's little clues and sideway glances, it would've been nice to be able to read his mind. The way he went from basically avoiding Evelyn as much as he could and being somewhat rude and stand-offish to suddenly showering her with affection and engaging in public displays of affection did not make any sense to me. It's as if he woke up one morning and decided to put his evil twin brother to rest and let a completely different side of his personality shine through. There wasn't really much of a gradual change, because in the end, things do move really quickly.
My head, much like the heroine's, was spinning. Because I was bothered by it so much, it got to the point that when the romance started happening, I almost disliked it. (This was not helped by Jack calling Evelyn 'baby' shortly thereafter. Dude, 2 seconds ago you barely even talked to her.) Which is strange because I was so into it at first! It seemed like the perfect slow burn until it wasn't. Because when you think about it, everything still happens over the course of 4 weeks.
I'm blaming most of my reaction on poor characterisation on the author's part and lack of emotional depth, maybe? I don't know. I would've liked an actual explanation for Jack's being surly and somewhat unfriendly at the beginning beyond the fact that he was instantly attracted to Evelyn and was trying to fight it.
I'm sure this is a case of 'it's not you, it's me' where this book is concerned. I should've loved it, but I didn't but I can see why other people would. I'm still sticking with three stars simply for the first 50% of the story that I flew through and because I did genuinely like a lot of elements of the story. I liked that Evelyn was such a planner (a trait we share) and wasn't at all sure of what she wanted out of life. She didn't have it all together yet (another trait we share) and I loved her slowly finding her way, finding joy in unexpected things. All the side characters were pretty phenomenal too, they were such a great bunch, I loved ALL of them. Hank Williams too.
On an ending note: my copy of the ebook needed a lot of editing. There were so many spelling and grammar mistakes and words missing here and there.
You guys. How come nobody told me about Emily Mayer?
I’ve been sleeping on this book for years, and meanwhile it’s been out there this whole time being so adorably sweet, so laugh-out-loud hilarious, bursting with chemistry and feels and this delicious long, slow burn. Everything that is great about romance novels – it’s in this book! And I had no idea.
I absolutely ADORED Evelyn. Every once in a while a heroine comes along that sort of steals the show. I mean, do not get me wrong, Jack was absolutely scrumptious as a hero. But Evie? She was heroine perfection. Awkward and silly and so self-aware. Her insecurities resonated and – honestly – her whole being was relatable and warm and lovable.
Paired with Jack? While their burn was slow and seemed to ignite without warning – I gobbled it up like the greedy romance glutton I am. Their chemistry worked for me. I loved her nervous missteps and his steady patience. I loved how – once their romance fired up – there was very little drama to it. I loved literally every single thing about them.
And don’t get me started on the secondary characters. Every. Single. One. About 2/3 of the way through the book I hopped on Amazon to see if there are stories for some of these people because they were begging for stories. Or maybe I just wanted more time with them? They added a wonderful layer and depth to the story and I just loved the entire package that Emily Mayer created here.
This was my first book by this author (because nobody told me!!), but I’ll be back for more lickity split. I am smitten, maybe a little bit obsessed, and over the moon to have discovered something that falls so perfectly into my wheelhouse. Definitely check this one out! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars
This book is overloaded with cuteness and fun and I loved every moment of it!
With a long slow burn between Evelyn and Jack, you would expect the story to drag but it never did. Evelyn was such a fun, engaging, heroine I couldn’t get enough of her. The way she thought about things, the way she acted, and her response to embarrassing moments held me captivated from the first page. I laughed throughout the entirety of this book.
We don’t get Jack’s point of view which I really, really needed to feel a connection to him, but I loved Evelyn enough to help make up for the lack of Jack. This couple actually are rarely in the same scene for a good portion of the story. In spite of that fact, I was never bored. With an abundance of secondary characters and animals that kept this heroine on her toes, I was thoroughly entertained.
When this couple finally start to make headway I was so hungry for it I couldn’t stop reading. I expected there to be some heavy angst, but that was never the case. This is chick-lit, rom-com, small town romance at its best!
Thank goodness for book buddies who know when to push you into reading a new author and an amazing book!
This is, I believe, Emily Mayer's first novel (unless she has written others under a different pen name) and it's pretty good. It's an easy-breezy chick lit read, with appealing characters, good dialogue, and a feel-good plot. There's even some personal growth for the main character, Evelyn Mercer, who's a woman who cannot function well without making plans and does not feel comfortable if she has to deviate from them.
At the moment, Evelyn, who graduated law school and is a bar member, is not working as a lawyer in Chicago, but rather as the executive assistant of a successful, hunky, handsome businessman. In spite of this job not being quite according to her plan, she's enjoying it. Problem is, however, that her boss is also a womanizer and just got caught in a high-profile affair with a married woman. So he's off to Montana to his family's ranch until his peccadillo is no longer the gossip du jour. And that means Evelyn goes with him.
A trip to a ranch in Montana is definitely not part of any of Evelyn's plans. She doesn't feel comfortable around strangers and in unfamiliar surroundings, and most definitely not around very handsome men. And her boss's brother, the manager of the ranch, is, apparently, the Most Handsome Man in the World.
Well, we go off to Montana and Evelyn learns to be more comfortable with herself and new surroundings and with Handsome Men. And there are Handsome Men all over the place here. I count at least 5 if you include the handsome middle-aged father of one of the four younger ones. We readers are never allowed to forget how Handsome they are. They are really, really, drop-dead Handsome. Muscular forearms, shapely rears, great abs, shoulders, biceps, and great hair. Not to mention their handsome, manly faces.
I confess to enjoying the sight of a Handsome Man myself. But enough is enough. This got really annoying. And it was so tiresome to see the women here going all googly-eyed and jelly-legged over them. There were comments or thoughts about the Handsomeness on almost every page.
The story itself is pleasant. A slow-burn romance and a personal-growth story of a woman who felt a bit like a nothing girl becoming an Everything Girl. I think the author shows promise. Maybe in future books, she could branch out more and make her secondary characters more complex and less like they were plucked from Central Casting. And maybe tone down the "OMG he's so Handsome" element.
LOVED the main character. LOVED LOVED her. I could relate to Evie in a lot of ways, which made this experience extra special. Her relationship with the dog, her friendship with her boss and with everyone else at Pinehaven Ranch, the way she found herself...All great parts of the story.
The romance was also really good. Slow burn. Broody hero. Sexy times.
For some reason I was reluctant to start this book, but I'm so happy I gave it a shot. No regrets!
This was a verrryyy long and boring and pointless read. The heroine had a personality of a cardboard, the plot was overdone, predictable, and if I’m honest extremely uncreative. I skipped a lot, especially the pointless text messages with the sisters. All of that could have been taken out and not missed. Just didn’t work for me. Kudos to me for finishing it.
It's rare to find a good slow burn with all of the feels so I was so pleased to find this. Proper escapism, no angst just good solid feels and excellent smut.
Complete story, available on ku. If you enjoy Mariana Zapata or Sally Thorne then you'll love this.
This has to be one of the top 5 best books I have ever read! It has a great slow burn I love, comedy and all the feels. I love Evelyn's relationship with all the guys, her awkwardness and how funny she is. I was sucked right in from the beginning and didn't put it down until I was done. Then I started it right back up again. I cannot wait for more from this author!
First off, a quick shout out to Jacob Proffitt because if he hadn't read this baby, it wouldn't have popped in my recommendations list. So hats off to you, man!!! 😊😊😊
I don't even know where to begin. This baby is a slow burning perfection.
I am a huge fan of Mariana Zapata and this book reads like one of hers.
It's a story of Evelyn and Jack.
Evelyn is a girl who likes to plan everything. Sometimes, however, her plans don't work out as much as she wants them to. And when we meet Evie, she is still trying to find the right path in her life.
After she decided she hates working as a lawyer, she is offered a position as an executive assistant to Ben Danvers, a brilliant businessman but also a womanizer, something that lands him in a lot of trouble.
So to lay low, Ben takes Evie to Montana, to his family ranch house, where they could both work until the scandal dies down.
And this is where we meet Jack, Ben's brother. A former legendary bull rider, a farmer, a cowboy, a man through and through. And very easy on the eye.
Sadly, not a fan of Evelyn as it seems. From the very first meeting there's a lot of hostility on his part and Evie has no idea why.
And this is how it starts.
I don't wanna go into details because i don't wanna spoil, but the way they got closer and closer to each other, how Evie started to feel at home in Montana, how she grew into a woman she always wanted to be, this was all perfect.
And I freaking loved every bit of this book.
Don't expect any sudden turns of events, there aren't any. It's a slow burn.
It's a story of two people, who despite being complete opposites, find their way to each other's hearts.
And that part with King? I literally cried like a baby and i think my hubs is looking for a shrink for me lol.
Summing up, i dunno what rock i've been living under that I never heard of Emily Mayer. I really don't know. The writing style was wonderful, the humour was fantastic, very subtle but also very on-point.
I absolutely adored Evie, I looooved Jack, I was secretly in love with all the side characters, especially Gabe. This book was a perfction to me.
And so if you love slow burn like my dirty self, read this baby, you won't regret a thing.
3.5 stars for this slow burn. Evelyn had such a quirky, amusing voice. It was a bit too "wordy" for me. I would have liked to see more interaction between Jack and Evelyn that showed the feelings growing. I was also a bit confused in the beginning because she seemed attracted to Gabe. I wasn't sure who the H was going to be for a minute. A pretty good debut novel.
Who knew all I needed was a small town town cowboy to fall in love with me?! Jokes aside this book was so cute and I’m so happy they didn’t do a 3rd act break up, I could see through Jack's grumpiness but he won my heart either way.
Since there isn’t many reviews and this is the authors first book I decided to write a review. I want to state first that the writing was pretty good and I like the idea of the book. That being said there was to many triggers in this for me. I’m not a fan of the following; other women scenes/drama, Manwhore Heros, weak heroines that seem to be more of a door mat then anything else. The moment those show up in a book I’ve already checked out. I wish authors would stop doing that. I want more originality please!
So if you ok with those things I would say you might enjoy this one.
This was recommended to me and I have such a hard time saying no to recommendations:} I enjoyed it. It started out so strong and kinda lots a little of it's sizzle there for a bit. Sometimes you love the characters till they get in the relationship and then things sometimes get weird. That is how this was for me. I enjoyed it and I liked sweet insecure Evie. She was a fun character. You know what was weird, I never felt like I knew the leading man he was this grumpy mystery all threw the first and then I just felt like they started making out and lots of the conversations you have as you fall in love just weren't there and I just felt like I missed him. There was plenty of lust. This is an adult romance with some detailed sex and make out scenes. There are scattered F booms and swear words throughout.
While the 'working girl, tired of her big city job, moves to a small town to find peace and ends up with a cowboy' is a classic, can't-possibly-go-wrong formula, this was just one of those forgettable reads your brain decides to chuck out one fine day.
The girl was funny, charming and an endearing sight to witness but the boy was just.. 'hot'? When did that became the sole interesting personality, I'm not sure.
“You’re an everything girl. When I look at you, I see my everything. Whether you’re in Montana or Chicago or the goddamn moon, you are everything.”
It was plain awesome, delightful and enjoyable! All the side characters were remarkable, I loved the setting and the humor. Evelyn & Jack made a perfectly fine couple. The book was well written, quick paced and worth picking up if you're into grumpy cowboys who turn soft for their love interest. It was a fantastic slow burn but I didn't love it as much as I loved Rocket Science by the author. Though it did not disappoint and I'm looking forward to read more of Emily's future works!
LOVED this one!! A great slow burn - definitely as good as a Mariana Zapata book but without the endless inner dialogues!! So romantic!!! The feels were incredible too!!! My only nitpicky complaints were I wished the author made it more clear the H was jealous of Ben in the beginning and that he really didn’t hate Evie - it was hard to understand his reactions at first iykwim. I also found the h’s self doubt in the book a tad annoying but it was kept in check so no stars deducted. Hoping this author writes more soon!!!
Everything just fell flat for me, no chemistry, no intensity, nothing. I gave 3 stars because the secondary characters were cool but overall it was pretty plain.
Well that was absolutely adorable! It’s an enemiesish to lovers, slow burn I’m talking 85% into the book y’all! If you love Mariana Zapata slowburn you will enjoy this one!
I don’t normally read books with cowboys because my husband was one so I tend to judge books written about them, buuut she did a good job. I hope she writes a book about Gabe!
This was a master’s class in romance noveling. Plain and simple. The enemies to lovers trope can be tricky. The motivation for the conflict then the turnaround must be rock solid and perfectly paced. Mayer nails it. I love the fact that the reader can pick out right away why Jack is so dismissive of Evelyn at the beginning, even if—understandably—Evelyn cannot. Spoiler: Raging jealousy of his womanizing brother who EVERYONE assumes must be sleeping with Evelyn because “Executive Assist” has been code word for lover so many times in the past.
Again, the author had to thread the needle with the turnaround, pacing it perfectly as to not go too long to be annoying, but not go so quickly that the reader's like, “Well, that was fast.” When the love interests do get on the same page, it is just lovely. It was so easy to fall in love with both Evelyn and Jack and root for them to HEA.
One final note, I have to give Mayer props for red herringing the phone call from the ex fiancé half way through. She had me dreading the overdone 11th hour visit from the Ex to throw everything into conflict near the end. Didn’t happen. Instead, the dénouement landed just right, and OMG the goodbye at the airport... How often has that scene been written poorly in other romcoms, but Mayer sticks the landing on that too.
REREAD NOTE: Read (or reread) if you are looking for some mental and emotional happiness on a random Friday night.
Nothing really happened in Everything Girl. It was a very bland read-through, the characters uninteresting and lacking serious characterisation. The romance between Evelyn and Jack? Made no sense to me. They barely spent time together, barely said anything to each other, for quite awhile; she interacted with every other male in this book more than she did Jack, and yet they have a connection? How?! Their romance just felt forced as fuck and ultimately ended up being cliche as hell.
A conversation between Evelyn and Jack, when they're finally actually speaking words to each other:
"What do you like to read?" he asked. "Anything. Fiction, nonfiction—but I like fiction the best for sure." I faced out the window, needing a break from his probing gaze. "You’re full of surprises, Evelyn from Chicago." Wow, so deep...
LOL. Because reading about fiction and non-fiction is so interesting and attractive? It is not a surprising or interesting thing to find out about someone, get a grip.
Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, authors need to STOP using "baby" as a term of endearment as soon as the couple get together. Please, it's cringe.
I clicked on this book soon after I finished another, because I liked the cover. Big mistake. The writing here is amateur, the characters are forgettable, and the romance is pathetic and cheesy.
