USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!
Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.
Sweet, fun, fast. All in all a typical Christi Caldwell.
Many times I ask myself why I continue to read CC's even though its been a while since they've really WOW-ed me. And I think its because the ease of it, you know what you're getting with Caldwell's books. It won't be horrid but it won't make you sigh in joy either.
This is another edition in a fun, sweet, short read. Barry and Meredith knew each other when they were young; him a future duke and her the spirited daughter of his father's man of business. Interestingly, Barry is younger than Meredith - not by like a decade, just four years - so that's definitely something new. After being cast out and loosing everything Meredith is now a straight-laced matchmaker who has been employed by Barry's mother to find him a suitable duchess level wife.
Of course, you know where this is going. Barry and Meredith share some moments, realize they've a lot between them and fall in love. Everything is resolved very quickly, like so quickly. I really wish problems in life could be resolved as quickly and smoothly as their romance. But alas, nope!
Eventually what made me give it three stars are a few moments that stood out. The humor is good and I enjoyed Barry's mischief. At one point, when Barry uses his knowledge of roses to indicate to Meredith that not all roses have throns and indirectly tells her that not everyone will let her down - its quite sweet. It's also well executed by Caldwell.
So, if you're looking for a quick, fun sweet read pick this one up!
Series: The Heart of A Scandal #3 Publication Date: 6/25/19 Number of Pages: 210
Barry Aberdeen, Marquess of Tenwhestle – future Duke of Gayle – isn’t who society thinks he is, but he’ll keep that to himself. He is six and twenty and has years before he’ll be ready to marry. Little does he know; his parents have other plans for him. Now that his sister, Emilia, has married (Book #2 - A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart) their full attention has turned to Barry.
Meredith Durant’s father was the man-of-affairs and best friend to the Duke of Gayle and she was raised on the estate along with the duke’s children. She had a happy life there until she was twenty years of age and her ailing father was ‘retired’ and they were turned out. That was ten years ago, and now her father has died and she’s been supporting herself as a matchmaker for the last eight-and-a-half years.
Meredith was shocked to see Barry Aberdeen sitting in the gardens at the Royal Horticultural Society as she was there with one of her charges. She didn’t know it was him at first, but she saw a man and admired his looks – and then he started reading poetry aloud in the most mellifluous voice and she was mesmerized. Then, he turned, and it was her childhood nemesis, the brother of her best friend, the boy who had comforted her in a stable before she had to leave the estate – and he was all grown up.
Several weeks later, Barry was at their country estate for his parent’s annual two-week house party. Oddly enough, he usually enjoyed those events and was looking forward to the entertainments, fishing, riding, etc. Then, his sister finds him where he is fishing and tells him that their mother has turned her attention to his marital status. He doesn’t believe her – but then, she shows him the list of attendees – and it isn’t the usual group who is in attendance, it is almost exclusively young marriageable young ladies and their chaperones.
I love his reactions when he realizes that the reason Meredith is at the house party is that his mother has hired her to matchmake for him. He decided he’d just show them and then promptly lead Meredith on a journey of discovery, healing, growth, and love. Barry is a wonderful hero and just the man Meredith needed. Their journey was such a sweet one – and when Meredith sacrifices all for Barry’s wellbeing – it just makes your heart beat faster and faster.
This is an excellent, fast-paced, can’t-put-it-down kind of read filled with wonderful characters and two main characters that you can’t help but love. One thing I loved about the book is that there isn’t a lot of angst and turmoil – yes, there were some unpleasant memories, but they didn’t take on the angsty colorations that you often see. To me, the only thing that would have made the book better would have been the addition of an epilogue with them at some point in the future – in the experimental gardens – maybe with a baby or expecting one.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋 Lighthearted ,fun and wonderfully entertaining. This is a great book .
Laughs , easy banter , emotional and warm , I could keep going but I’d eventually run out of descriptive words . Just take it from me that you’ll adore this book .
Barry and Mare have been friends since they were small and this really comes through in the relationship, even though they split for ten years you can see the connection and the chemistry from the first time the meet again.
They are so good together, Christi has this way of giving her character a sense of belonging and emotional attachment to their partners, you can feel it in their conversations and in the way they react to each other .
It was also nice to see Heath and Emilia again and his parents the Duke and Duchess were wonderful .
All together it made a great book one that had me chuckling as well as a little teary eyed at times.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
"There was nothing more alluring than a man with a book," came Meredith's thought as she saw the gentleman in the tight-fitting black trousers with a tailcoat in just a shade deeper than red, which gave an illusion of sin. He was in the middle of the botanical gardens and she could not help staring as he began to read Byron. But she had to remember "A charming gentleman was a dangerous thing, and all women-all of them-could fall prey to one." Thus was her advice to all her charges and their mothers at their first meeting. You see Meredith was a matchmaker and at thirty one years of age she thought herself beyond staring at anyone, most certainly not "Lord Captivating". Imagine when the man turned around and it was Barry, the little boy who was the brother of her best friend and heir to the dukedom. A man who belonged to the family that had turned out her and father, dismissed him from his job and she with him, with no care as to what happened to them. That is when life had drastically changed for her. Meredith had made a life for herself with a career in matchmaking and she lived by all the strict rules she taught the girls. But it appeared those rules just might be broken! Barry's mother had been pushing him to find a match and guess who she hired to help him find that perfect lady? Oh yes, lady fate was shining down and his mother engaged her to help the process along. A devilish, beyond drool worthy man. A woman who has forgotten how to enjoy life but was determined not to fall in love. But once they get together, it is so wonderful to watch how they both change! I loved these two together and could only smile as I turned the pages and cheer on Meredith to let her true self out! A wonderful romantic, fun read that keep me captivated until the end. Christi Caldwell is one of my very favorite authors and I look forward to every new story she writes! Cannot wait for more!!
Meredith Durant is the daughter of the Duke of Gayle's steward, when her father's health deteriorates he's turned off & they leave the only home she's known. Twenty year old Meredith also leaves behind her best friend Emilia , the duke’s daughter & Barry his son. When her father dies she forges a life for herself as a matchmaker. Imagine her surprise when a decade later her job finds her working for the unlikeliest of households, never expecting her assignment would be her best friend's younger brother, Barry—who's not so little anymore. Barry Aberdeen, the future Duke of Gayle, knew his days of freedom were numbered. With his sister recently married, his mother turned her marital aspirations to him. She’s even gone as far as to hire a matchmaker, who should it be but Meredith Durant. Barry, not so little is just the epitome of a hero, gorgeous, caring, wonderful sense of humour & totally sigh worthy. Meredith is intelligent, strong & oh so lovable. Together they make for one of those couples who stay with you. A lovely, lovely love story that left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. There were no cliff hangers, no mystery just two wonderful characters finding that childhood friends could have their HEA My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I read the previous book in this series, I so loved it I didn’t gave a thought and purchased it when I learned about a new sequel.
I do liked both main characters, Barry is such a fun, witty and clever hero, he tries to live life at the fullest his status allows him and he is also a caring young man, able to see past his rank and vowing in his own way to restore his childhood friend inner’s joy. Meredith has to do with what life has thrown on her path, having lost more than her home and first love in a short span of time, she also lost her trust in others, having to face alone her father’s demise and the ruin that came after, she rebuilt herself, a self expunged from the dreams she once had, only focused on her task. So they rekindle, a decade later, no one is the same, Barry has created a happy mask as a facade for his true interest in life when bitterness has stolen part of Meredith’s zest of life. It was no fast nor slow-burn romance, after so many years apart, each sets new eyes on the other, seing the similarities and differences.
At first, I had a problem with this great tale, it was Meredith’s weakness around Barry, I tend to very much dislike the knees wobbling women. So the beginning gave me a fright, but as Barry was as affected by her, as they so shared an instant and depth attraction, which heightened their senses of the other, rendering them unable to be fully coherent when close to another. I decided to follow where the author would lead me with this couple, and it was a merry chase, both unable to stay away.
Perfect choice if you want a feel-good read that eases the spirit, soothes the soul, and warms the heart. A bit of a fairy tale, that reminds one that dreams (barely even dared) just may come true. Smile, laugh, and yes, cry, with the amazing characters only this talented author can create. You won’t find a better historical romance if you want an unpredictable and lovely treat to fill a few summer hours with pure enjoyment.
Meredith Durant’s father was friend and man-of-affairs to the Duke of Gayle. She grew up along side the ducal children, Emilia and Barry. So when her father was dismissed and they were put out, she was hurt and confused to be leaving the family she had felt so close to. With the passing of her beloved father shortly thereafter, Meredith was left alone to map out her future. Feeling hurt and forgotten by the ducal family, she vowed never again to expect anything from others. With hard work, and altering her name, she built a career which secured her a reputation as London’s leading matchmaker.
Now, upon being summoned by the Duchess, and with no other option than to accept, she’s returning to that familiar estate, where she’s offered an assignment of matchmaking Barry Aberdeen, Lord Tenwhestle, to a woman of his standing, with the highest of birthrights.
Always expected to conform to societal demands by his parents, and not permitted or encouraged to pursue his true interests, Barry masked himself as a rogue. The Gayle title would always come first before their son or anything else. When Meredith comes back into his life, Barry begins to realize what is missing from both of their lives, amidst the developing feelings beginning to surface between them.
It wasn’t a dream of love between them (their relationship growing up more of friends, even brother and sister), but to see the love that evolves as their paths once again merge, is a beautiful and romantic journey, filled with desire and tenderness. As always with this writer, another page-turner packed full of unforgettable and captivating moments, with a sure-to-please ending.
I received an arc for my honest opinion, and I’m happy to do so. I absolutely loved “A Matchmaker for a Marquess”, and most definitely recommend it.
A Matchmaker for a Marquess by Christi Caldwell is book Three in The Heart of a Scandal Series. This is the story of Barry Aberdeen and Meredith 'Mare' Durant. I did feel this could be a standalone book if you wish to do so. We do get to see some past characters so that is always a bonus for me! Meredith's father worked for the Duke of Gayle which lead her to be best friends with his daughter Emilia and friends with her little brother Barry. But then her father health to a turn and Meredith left the only home she really knew along with her friends. Now in the present (several years later) Meredith is a Matchmaker with a successful reputation, but her heart is harden to love for herself. Barry is to inherit his father's title, the Duke of Gayle. Barry knows now that his sister is married, his mother is turning her eye to him to make a match. Meredith ends up being hired by the Duchess of Gayle to find her son Barry a wife. Barry is just a few years younger than Meredith who acts so much different than the Meredith he used to know...he sets out to loosen her tightly tide attitude. Of course feelings start to become engaged which can only lead to hurt Meredith thinks but of course love always wins in the end. Loved this story and I cannot say how big a fan I am of Ms. Caldwell's writing. Although this was somewhat lighter in story it still moved me like no other author can do. If you haven't read a book by Ms. Caldwell then you are missing some great stories....I highly recommend her books.
Miss Meredith Durant believed in good things and fairy tales. That is until the Duke and Duchess of Gayle forced her father along with her out of the only home they knew. The only person willing to console her was her best friend’s little brother little Barry Aberdeen. Ten years later Meredith, a matchmaker, is all grown up cynical and world weary but so much wiser than who she was as a girl. As she is listening to someone speak beautiful poetry she is entranced by whoever is speaking and wants more; when the person reading the poetry turns around horrors upon horrors it is little Barry Aberdeen, Marquess of Tenwhestle. Meredith does the only thing she knows, she runs thinking she will never see Barry again. Never is a long time and the Duchess calls on Meredith for help in finding Barry the perfect match for him. Meredith is determined to find Barry someone but all Barry wants to do is spend time with her. As both Meredith and Barry spend more and more time together; can Meredith do the unthinkable find Barry a good match and leave him even though her heart and his will get broken with the choice? This regency story is a wonderful lighthearted romantic comedy that is so much fun to read! Sure the improbability of a matchmaker and a marquess is not really possible since marrying someone titled and within the same circles would be more likely. Still if most stiff regency readers can let go of their misapprehensions and just enjoy the story plus how well it is written will find joy in it because really there is a lot to like. There is some turmoil, personal tragedy, second chances and secondary characters you don’t know whether to trust them or not and yes it will make you get mad at the injustice but smile when love triumphs over all. Meredith the staid stiff heroine matchmaker is someone you can’t help but like. Yes she suffers many betrayals but still stands strong and definitely a heroine worth falling for. Barry is truly a great hero as well, worthy of being a book boyfriend and one easy to fall for too. Sure Barry’s young but he’s so full of life and outspoken it’s hard not to love him anyway. This is a feel good love story filled with lots of emotion that is well worth the read too!
A Matchmaker for a Marquess is a true Christi Caldwell original. The kernel of this heartwarming story was sparked in the author’s incredible imagination at a peewee soccer match. You have to read the dedication. So precious!
The characters are fantastic. The writing continues to be fresh after so many books. Caldwell writes characters a reader wants to befriend. This story was no exception.
Meredith Durant finds herself alone in the world fending for herself as a matchmaker to young ladies of the ton. A far cry from the idealistic young woman we met in “In Need of a Knight.” I love meeting Aldora Adamson’s friends from long ago. They’ve all so far had far different lives than they dreamed of in the “Heart of a Duke” origin story. As usual, Christi Caldwell has turned her world upside down and done a magnificent job of picking up the pieces.
Barry Aberdeen, future Duke of Gayle, and younger and formerly bratty brother to Emilia Aberdeen, Meredith’s former best friend, is a dishy hero. A man of many smiles, he tugs the heartstrings and makes this story a genuine page turner.
There are no outlandish, mustache twirling villains in this tale. Just two kindred spirits finding love at the right time in very ordinary circumstances. What could be more ordinary than a future duke being forced, at the behest of his parents, to seek a wife at a country house party where the single females outnumber the eligible bachelors five to one? That’s typical, right? No? Only in my Regency romance obsessed world? Okay, I will give you that.
But still...What happens when you meet the man of your dreams in his infancy? Well, you just wait until he grows up, I suppose.
I gladly recommend this story. Come on immerse yourself in Christi Caldwell’s amazing world. You won’t regret it.
A Matchmaker for a Marquess is the third book in author Christi Caldwell’s “The Heart of a Scandal” series. This is actually the first book I’ve read in this series, and am now going back to read the other books. This was truly just a joy to read!
Meredith Durant had spent her entire life at Berkshire Estates. Her father was the Duke of Gayle’s friend and man-of-affairs for more than two decades. When her father is abruptly and unexpected sacked, Meredith is shocked and devastated to leave…
Barry Aberdeen, Marquess of Tenwhestle is not society’s typical rogue, he has a love for botany. With his parents desperate to see him wedded, his mother secretly hires a matchmaker to help in her quest. What Barry doesn’t know is the girl who he grew up with, Meredith Durant is the matchmaker...
Well first let me say I absolutely loved Barry. He’s charming, funny and I just adored his personality. The interaction and the banter between him and his family was witty and had me smiling throughout most of the book.
As for Meredith, my heart broke for the young girl who felt betrayed all those years ago, who struggled to take care of her father and to make a living after his passing. I absolutely loved Meredith and Barry together. They grew up together with Barry being 4 years younger and more of a nuisance to Meredith back then. So when she meets the grown-up Barry and feels herself attracted to him, she struggles and tries desperately to fight the feelings that continue to grow. I loved watching these two former friends reconnect and gradually fall in love.
With witty dialogue, fabulous secondary characters and a surprising twist at the end I didn’t expect, this was an absolutely fantastic read that I struggled to put down! Highly recommend!
Well, I am in love with a new hero, Barry Aberdeen the Marquess of Tenwhestle! He was so much fun, handsome, his humor is side-splitting, a good friend, very romantic, great conversationalist, a botanist, a very happy bachelor that the young ladies all want to snag & a "reputation" of being a rake - seriously, what else could you want?
Meredith Durant was the daughter of the Duke of Gayle's man-of-affairs & had spent her whole life living in the cottage on the Duke's property. She grew up with the Duke's daughter Emilia & they were as close as sister's & Emelia's bothersome little brother Barry, who was three years younger than Meredith. The Duke & Meredith's father were best friends & the Duke & Duchess were her god parents but her father was beginning to forget things & the Duke decided to retire her father & hire a younger man-of-affairs - they were forced to move from the cottage to London. Her father's health worsened & not long after moving, he died. Meredith was forced to find work & she became a successful Matchmaker.
Eleven years later, she runs in to Barry - he has all grown up, boy has he grown up. They talk & reminisce a bit about the past & what she has been doing, then go their separate ways - even though they both are still thinking about the other one. A couple of months later, the Duchess contacts Meredith & wants to hire her as a matchmaker to Barry - she is having a house party with her list of young ladies fit for the future Duke of Gayle. This is where all the fun, humor, lost friendships, romance, desires begin their journey to find Barry a wife to fulfill his duty.
I can't say enough about Christi's ability to make me laugh, cry & feel emotion so deep that I am physically at the house party with Barry & Meredith. I was gifted this ARC & I am thrilled to give you my honest opinion - as you can tell, I loved it & I know you will too!
Oh my, what a wonderful story of a heroine who has had to be strong and the hero who makes the dreams she had given up on come true.
Destined to never marry Meredith Durant helps members of the ton make matches. Until the day comes that she’s tasked with making a match for the son of the people who turned her life upside down years before. Barry Aberdeen, Marquess of Tenwhestle, stumbles upon someone he thought he’d never see again and is outraged at the path her life has taken. He’s even more stunned when he learns she’s been hired to find him a match.
Be prepared for laughs, tears, and a shock; all written with Christi Caldwell’s classic style.
I had to DNF - the female character was freakishly clumsy. She kept falling on her ass and getting tangled in things. Yick. "With a gasp, she scrambled from his lap. Her skirts—her now-damp skirts—tangled about her legs. Meredith came down hard on the floor. She groaned as pain radiated from her buttocks up her back, and she resisted the urge to massage the wounded area." Then, soon after: "She became tangled in her covers and fell back on her haunches." Wow, haunches. Super sexy. Maybe next she broke a bone. Gross.
A Matchmaker for a Marquess, Book 3 of The Heart of a Scandal series, was about Miss Meredith "Mare" Durant, daughter of the Duke of Gayle's late and former man-of-affairs, and Lord Barry Aberdeen, the Marquess of Tenwhestle and future Duke of Gayle. Eleven years after the Duke of Gayle fired her father as his man-of-affairs and having had her heart crushed by a stable boy's desertion, Meredith had become a matchmaker. While seeking out her current client at the botanical gardens, she encountered the most alluring gentleman she had ever seen...who turned out to be none other than her former best friend's little brother, Lord Barry Aberdeen. Meredith had quite a few reasons for harboring hard feelings towards the entire Aberdeen family for every single one of them had hurt her in one fashion or another. So when Barry's mother sent for her, she thought, even hoped that it was to receive an apology for the way they had treated her and her late father. However, that was not the case. The Duchess of Gayle had actually summoned her to recruit her to assist Barry in finding a wife...in essence, to play matchmaker for him. When Meredith tried to decline the position, the Duchess made the offer one she couldn't turn down, regardless of how much she truly wanted to. While there was a good deal of angst and drama in this story, the emotion that took center stage, other than passion, was humor. Oh yes. I ran a riotous path throughout the book whenever Barry and Meredith spent any amount of time together...which was plenty. However, there was also jealousy, anger, betrayal, fear, and even a bit of resentment to round out the emotional rollercoaster ride of a storyline. The more time Barry and Meredith spent together, the deeper and stronger the feelings between them became. The chemistry and attraction were apparent to anyone who paid any amount of attention to them. When the past and present collided, it brought everything to a head. It was amazing to "watch" how this story played out to its fullest potential. The characters were all well fleshed out and the storyline fully developed with very little fluff. The twists and turns kept the reader glued to the pages from beginning to end. This book definitely deserved a five-star rating and to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
While her father worked for the Duke of Gayle, Meredith grew up with the children of the home and was treated like family. But suddenly her father is left go and she must leave the only home and family she has ever known. Her father soon dies and she must make a living for herself. She finds that she is good a matchmaking and starts to make a name for herself. While with her latest charge, she runs into Barry, the son of her father's former employer. He was always just the younger brother of her best friend, but now he is grown up and appears to be a rogue! Several months later, Meredith is invited back to her old home by the duchess. When she arrives, she realizes that the duchess whats her to matchmake for Barry. While the money that she is being offered would set her up for the rest of her life, why is trying to find Barry the perfect match feel so wrong?
Barry has just watched his sister fall in love and now his mother has turned her sights on him. When he finds out that his mother has hired his sister's former best friend to find him a match, he is livid. But he works out a deal with Meredith. He will mingle with his mother's guests at the house party, if she will spend time each morning remembering what it is to have fun.
As these two send time together, it is hard for both of them to deny the feelings that are starting to develop. While Barry is not ready to marry, Meredith feels that she is not of a high enough class for a future duke. Can these two reconcile these things to get their HEA?
I loved Meredith and Barry's story! I loved that they had a common history that tied them together and because of that, were comfortable with each other. You really didn't have any of the awkward moments that often happen as people get to know one another. But sine they had spent so many years apart from one another, they still had lots to lean about what their lives were like now. I loved the bantering between them and it had me laughing out loud. I can't wait to see what Caldwell has in store next!
Meredith grew up on a Ducal estate but when her father is made to retire to letting in a younger man Meredith is hurt, hurt that those that she loved just forgot her even though they had their own problems no one helped her. But what even hurt most that she didn't understand was that her father was ill. Then there is Barry, the Marquess who even though he was younger than Meredith, his sister and her friends he tagged along with them. Always listening in on their talks, having Meredith play piggyback and just being a lovable pest. 10 years or more has passed and Meredith has lost her father and a pile of bills to pay on top of finding a position to live on. What happened is being a matchmaker in helping those that needed help in finding the right partner and Meredith does find them and have matched many happy couples. Barry is 26 now, is a man about town, but his joy is in plants and horticulture which his parents doesn't like. He still loves to go fishing, and going to his mother's parties but he isn't ready to marry or is he? But now the Duchess of Gayle has set her mind on having Meredith find a match for her son, Barry. Does Meredith accept it? Does Barry allow it? What are behind Meredith and Barry's reasons for getting together in getting him his match? These questions and more are just waiting for you to enjoy reading. In reading this book Christi has brought her flair of the mischievous in Barry, and the practically staid manner of Meredith into many situations that has you laughing, gasping of air and tearing up in parts. But Barry wanting to not marry, and Meredith not realizing that she is having feelings for Barry show that as always you will fall in love with not just the characters but with Christi's wonderful stories. You will love Meredith and Barry's story and before you know it you will want to read the other books in the "The Heart of a Scandal" Series just to see how Christi brought those couples together.
I’m so thrilled to be reading another masterpiece from the amazing Christi Caldwell! If you have read any of her books before you will know that she writes the most amazing Historical Romances! What makes them so special? Christi writes about those with PTSD, Disabilities and Older women, that let’s be frank here, 99% of other authors will either completely shy away from, or they will be a footnote! But that doesn’t happen with this author! No, she feels that everyone deserves their happily ever after! And I not only wholeheartedly agree, but commend her for that.
Meredith Durant is the daughter of the steward to the Duke of Gayle's Estate, well he was, as now he has been let go, and they are being forced from their home, and Meredith feels not only heartbroken but betrayed too! Not only by the man that claimed to love her, but lied to her, but by the Duke and Duchess, her were also her godparents, but finally by the one person that cause all this mess, or should I say his failing mind did, her Father. The only one who offered her any comfort in this time of pain, was Barry, the Future Duke of Gayle. But even he was powerless to stop this runaway train.
Fast forward thru a lot of pain, and Meredith is truly on her own now, so she did the only thing she thought she could do, and that was to reinvent herself into become a matchmaker to the wealthy… that is until she bumped into her past! I will leave the story there, but I will honestly say that this book moved me, and at times I felt like I was feeling Meredith’s hopelessness and pain, and my heart broke for her!
Now before you get nervous about not reading any of the other books in the series BEFORE A Matchmaker for the Marquess, it is just like with all of the author's books, has been written as a stand-alone, but I hope you do read the other books in the series, as it is truly special.
“A Matchmaker for a Marquess” is the third book in Christi Caldwell’s “The Heart of a Scandal” series. I greatly enjoyed reading the book as the story is well thought out (with a few unexpected twists) and Christi’s writing style, as always, draws you right into the story. I didn’t want to put it down. The dialogues are clever and witty and make you smile more than once. Barry is a truly lovable character and I can say I found a new favourite book boyfriend! :D I highly recommend this book.
The book can be read as a standalone, however I can only recommend reading the other books in the series (and Christi’s other series ;-P) because they are also great books and it is always nice to see previous characters reappearing, and it lets you truly appreciate the world Christi has created with her books.
*****************************************
“A Matchmaker for a Marquess” ist das dritte Buch in Christi Caldwells “The Heart of a Scandal” Reihe.

the five star reviews are all correct, however they arrive at their rating. Two things stood out that were overlooked for the most part. In saying goodbye to Barry, I felt a 16 y-0 infatuation and love for Mare, as demonstrated when they reveal they have both kept their exchanged rose petals. Also that the scandal rags of Barry's roguishness apparently are untrue: he tells Meredith after they made love it was his first time. What puzzled me was the supposed charade conducted by his parents to bring Meredith to marriage. this was so far fetched and was not explained well. The treatment of Meredith's father and his dementia was not clear either. She lived in the manor, he lived in the cottage. Apparently they were given no time to leave. Yet the Duke said it was not the case. The age difference had no relevance. Content had the wit, banter and teasing fun one looks for. It seemed though that the constant repetition of Meredith's circumstances were filler, as the book was quite short in itself. Reading the synopsis of a thousand tales at the end of the book became fatiguing as one plot after another was like a deer shedding its antlers and them growing back not quite the same, grander, and different directions. Have read many many of caldwell's books and enjoyed them, but it seems that churning out series with little humor, much angst, and the ever necessary situations between H/H became like writing your name fifty times: it is your name but never quite the same signature. never quite the same, but never quite different is the overkill. Still thank Christi for filling my evening with something else than Trump, Barr, Flynn, and the pandemic. for that i am truly grateful.
“A charming gentleman was a dangerous thing, and all women—all of them—could fall prey to one.”
A Matchmaker For A Marquess is book three in the Heart of a Scandal series by Christi Caldwell. This is a light-hearted, easy book to read. Meredith Durant and Barry Aberdeen, the Marquess of Tenwhestle, grew up together. Barry was the annoying younger brother to Meredith’s best friend, that used to follow them all over. Meredith’s father retired due to health concerns, and moved her away just as everything seemed to fall apart in her life. Barry was the only person to comfort her before she left. Ten years later Barry and Meredith have a chance meeting in the park that puts in motion the events of this book. Meredith has become a reserved woman and esteemed matchmaker for the ton. Barry has grown into a happy, oft-smiling man with a strong intellect. I just have to say this, Barry is a tease and I spent the first half of this book saying to myself, ‘Just kiss her, already!”. Barry and Meredith both see themselves as they were and how they could be. They bring out the best in each other. Meredith says the secret to find love is to just be yourself and I think that’s true. I think my biggest take away from this book is that sometimes distance happens between people and it’s not because there’s someone to blame, life just happens sometimes. You won’t stop smiling as you read this book, I didn’t.
(Note: We finally get a reunion of some of the girlfriends, I hope they all come together in the last book. I received this book as an ARC from the author. Release Date is June 25, 2019)
What an emotional story. Friendship, loyalty, betrayal and misunderstandings plague Meredith and her father. Her father was the Duke's man of business when he was replaced. Meredith was forced to leave her friends who were like family and she had to leave the only place she knew as home. She was jilted by her first love, then she had to move and then her father became ill and died. Meredith had to survive and survive she did. Meredith grew up carefree loving life, enjoying nature and loved her friends Emilia and her younger brother Barry, the Duke's children. She grew up with them. Ten years later, Meredith became one of the most sought-after ton matchmaker. By this time there was no contact with Emilia or her family. Her parents were Meredith's godparents and they never reached out to her. But Meredith had given up on finding happiness for herself and decided to find happiness for others. Thus, the matchmaking business was born. On an outing with one of her clients, she ran into Barry. As shocked as she was, she could not help but admire how he had grown up so handsome. But she threw up her walls and walked away from the encounter. The story revolves around the unusual request of the duchess for Meredith to return to her childhood home to be a matchmaker for her son Barry. This story has so many facets to it. There are twists and turns and an absolutely surprising ending that came out of left field. I never expected it. A wonderful story and a must read. I highly recommend it. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After some dark, heavy books from Christi Caldwell she delights us with a lighthearted, feel good book. We first meet Barry, younger brother to Emilia, in A Lady’s Guide to a Gentleman’s Heart, where we get a glimpse of this charming mischievous rogue who defends his older sister like a true gentleman. Meredith is first seen In Need of a Knight, one of Aldora’s childhood friends, who has also know Barry since he was a baby. Inevitably life happens and Meredith moves away, eventually having to make her way in the world alone. Until a chance meeting with a handsome, charming rogue she knew as a boy, Barry. The Duchess of Gayle is determined to see her son married & settled organizes her usual summer house party with a twist. Meredith a well known Matchmaker reluctantly takes the job offered by the Duchess. As you can imagine mischief & fun ensues when Barry finds out why she is there. He makes a deal with Meredith and through their time spend together she learns to enjoy life again and together they fall in love. This was such an enjoyable read, Christi’s characters touch your heart and you root for them to get their Happy Ever After. She writes from the heart. I cannot recommend this book enough, you don’t have to have read any of her books before this could be your first but be warned you will want to read her others after this.

So does Meredith find Barry right woman ? Will Barry share his feelings with Meredith? Grap this amazing book to find out what happens with this cute love story.
I absolutely love Christi Caldwell's writing. I find myself counting down the days until her next release, and thankfully she is an author who doesn't keep you waiting years for the next installment to a series. Plus, a lot of her series are linked together, so you are constantly getting to revisit old characters. That is one of the things I love about A Matchmaker for a Marquess and The Heart of a Scandal series- getting to find out what happened to the very first ladies who wanted "a heart of a duke."
One of my favorite type of historical romances is the "old friends become lovers." This book does not disappoint. I fell in love with Barry and Meredith. Caldwell is an expert in digging deep into the emotions of the character and really making you feel right along with the characters. There is plenty of emotion in this book. I found myself laughing, crying and most importantly sighing throughout the book. I love that this book touches on finding someone who loves you for you, and Caldwell does a fabulous job sending you on that journey with each character. You get to know who they were, who they are now because of life experiences and most importantly who they will become.
I highly recommend this book or any of Caldwell's books. If you haven't tried her, wait no more. You won't be disappointed.
Sometimes you want to be wrapped up in a warmth of goodness and love and escape the bleakness that real world throws you in to. This book seems to be the perfect wrapper to provide that warmth, a book that makes you feel happy, and smile once you close the back cover...and that smile dangles on your lips throughout the day and more! We had met the characters in this book earlier, in other stories, and loved them, or were intrigued by them. The way Christi makes them unfold in this story touches your heart. As always, the scenes just play in front of your eyes...each smile, each tease, each banter is like a new bud blooming into a colourful flower. One is bound to fall in love with the Aberdeen family. And the way the story is presented, it never seems it is a fairy tale never to be really true, rather it is grounded in reality, and makes you believe all over again that goodness exists and it is everyone's right to be happy! I don't want to give glimpses about the story...but do read it, because it will definitely make you smile, and.... it is good to smile!
A Matchmaker for a Marquess, book three in Christi Caldwell’s Heart of a Scandal series, is a marvelous tale! Meredith Durant grew up in the Berkshire countryside as the best friend to Barry Aberdeen, the future Duke of Gayle’s older sister Emilia. He never understood why she and her father left unexpectedly when she was just a young lady and he a boy on the cusp of manhood, but he never forgot her, or holding her in his arms as she cried her goodbyes. Years later he encounters Meredith visiting the gardens at the Royal Horticultural Society, and finds her working as a companion. When he inquired of his parents they say they will check in on her, and instead hire her as a “Matchmaker” for Barry, who is know to be a Rogue. As with all of Christi Caldwell’s novels her characters come to life on the page and Meredith and Barry are no different. But there is something about this couple, and Barry especially, that just makes you smile. There is a certain joie de vivre, that is heart warming and enlightening! They are both witty, charming and fun-loving characters that make this a truly marvelous read!
