FINAL DECISION: This was a book that slowly built the relationship between the hero and heroine. By the time the book ended, I adored them as a couple.
THE STORY: Celia Fitzgilbert is recovering socially from a broken engagement when she meets the reclusive Duke of Clairemont. There is something special between them from the moment they meet. Celia is thrilled that she might actually find a man she can love. But the Duke of Clairemont is actually an imposter who is masquerading as the duke to uncover a murderous traitor.
OPINION: This one quietly crept up on me as a book I really enjoyed. There was a bit of suspense in determining what happened to the real duke and also the story behind the hero. What I loved best was that while the two were falling in love under false pretenses, the truth is that both had things to hide. When the hero's secret is revealed, Celia is shocked and upset but then realizes that there is much she can forgive. The sweetness of their story after the big reveal made me love the romance between these two. Everything seems hopeless and yet there is still a possibility for a happy ending. Best of all, there is no magic wand at the end. These two have to live with challenges because of the hero's past but love makes all of it worthwhile.
I liked Celia as a character. She is pragmatic and willing to forgive when I expected drama when the deceit is revealed. To have the man she falls in love with go from a duke to a not-duke might be expected to make a woman despair about all she has lost. But Celia truly only loves the hero and is willing to sacrifice much to be with him.
An oh, how I loved the hero. I especially liked that he is truly a nice guy. His conscience clearly bothers him as his interacts with Celia. Accomplished and unexpected in what his story turns out to be. Michaels does a great job of having seemingly unexpected pairs work well together.
There are a lot of secrets at play in this book and I don't want to give away anything more.
I do want to say that I liked this book even more than the first in the series. There was just an easiness with the characters and their relationship. I expected more drama and angst and while there are many secrets to be revealed, the characters themselves have a core commitment to their feelings for one another that gave me a warm feeling.
WORTH MENTIONING: Oh, I can't wait to read what is going on with Stenfax.
CONNECTED BOOKS: A SPRING DECEPTION is the second book in the Seasons series. It can be read as standalone although there are connecting characters and an overarching story. This book gives all the information a reader needs.

Chock full of angsty goodness!
One of the romantic tropes I always enjoy is a character with a secret identity. Whatever their reasons for hiding their true selves it’s just that much more suspenseful and engaging to see love blossom even knowing that the big reveal must follow. In A Spring Deception it’s the hero – Clairemont – who isn’t all that he seems.
When the War Office learns that the Duke of Clairemont has been murdered it puts a high profile investigation in jeopardy. The duke had long been suspected of working with other men to support traitorous activities in England and his death could force their other suspects to to to ground until the rumors subside. Hoping to salvage their case and find the killer, the head of departnemt decides to keep the murder quiet and use the chameleon-like skills of his best agent – John Dane – to step into the shoes of the dead peer. Since no one in London has seen Lord Clairemont in a decade, who’s to say that the man making his appearance during the season isn’t the reclusive duke?

This new series from Jess Michaels is quite good, and while maybe not as steamy as previous novels the stories are much much more engaging. There is intrigue with compelling and likable characters---- don't get me wrong---there is still some steam, just not an overwhelming amount. The overall arc regarding the two sisters parentage is fascinating, can't wait to see how that resolves itself. If you liked the Woodley's (novella + first two) and the Flynn's you should like this series as well.

I normally dislike spy stories. But this one was pretty great. No one gets kidnapped by a super obvious villain. Also the villain was a late introduction so i didn't have to suffer through some villains murderous plans. The villain also wasn't a 'super-nearly-undefeatable' dude. Surprise! The war office guy and the hero could actually handle themselves. Unlike other spy stories, you get an actual bad guy and not someone close to the hero as the villain. I appreciated the relationship between John and the EarI being maintained and not needlessly corrupted. The author did not forget she was writing a romance and not a mystery. Thank goodness.
I loved how Celia just loved John for whoever he turned out to be.
This was less steamy than I expected for Jess Michaels but the build up was sweet.
My only frustration is that the mystery of Celia and Rosalinde's father is still unsolved. Pffft.

Celia wants the kind of marriage her sister has: one filled with love. She has ended her engagement in the previous book and so now is free to choose. Only one man has caught her eye, unfortunately he is an impostor. The Duke of Clairemont is dead and someone has taken his place to find the murderer and uncover a secret operation. He and Celia find themselves drawn to each other quickly but they both have secrets. Will their love survive, can they be together when those secrets are out in the open? I know the answer because I was lucky enough to get an ARC of one of my most anticipated romances by one of my favorite romance authors, Jess Michaels.
This one, like the previous story, has two characters that have such inner struggles between what is right or wrong, duty versus truth. I'm going to call him Clairemont so nothing about his true character is revealed, but I really enjoyed his character. He is usually composed and collected, the perfect character to go undercover but Celia really gets to him. He never saw himself as being able to connect with another person like he is with Celia. She is warm, caring and overall a good person who wants more than anything to find love and to learn about her father's identity. She takes the risk of going for what she really wants even if what she really wants is a lie. They struggle knowing what they really want and how little time they think they can have with each other before they have to go their separate ways. It was heartbreaking. It was so sad to see them fall in love and then try to stay away from each other, suppress their feelings to avoid the pain. Of course, it can't be that easy and they are continuously drawn to each other. Their love was so lovely.
I really wanted to know who killed the real Clairemont. I had no idea because it isn't like here is a bunch of suspects and one of them is the murderer. This part of the plot is here and there but focused more so towards the end. It has a good balance and is incorporated in the story nicely. I'm not going to lie but I still really want to know who their father is. I still don't know. I get that they want to focus on the future and not the past but they were discussing it so much that I think we should still get an answer.
Although I may not have loved this one as much as the first book, it was still very interesting to see how these two overcame their circumstances. I can't wait for the next book which is about Stenfax and Elise. Gasp!

This book has me biting nails and swearing throughout as Celia, so completely deceived but so deeply desired discovers she cannot take everything in front of her for fact. A Spring Deception is book 2 in the 'Seasons' 4 book series by Jess Michaels. Book 1 is Rosalinde and Gray's story. Book 2 focuses on Celia, Rosalinde's sister, and John Dane, a spy for the crown.
We first meet Dane when he's called to the Duke of Clairemont's residence by Stalwood, Dane's handler, to investigate the duke's murder. Believing Clairemont and his network were involved in treasonous activities, much of the investigation comes to a standstill with Clairemont's death and a killer on the loose. However, the reclusive Duke hasn't been seen in public in ages, conducting most of his business by correspondence. Bearing a slight resemblance to the Duke, Dane slips into spy mode to impersonate the duke and make a return to society in an effort to ferret out his network and flush out a killer.
Celia Fitzgilbert sees the Duke of Clairemont across the ballroom and feels a strange attraction and connection to the handsome prodigal duke that just arrived to the ball. An innocent meeting alone on the terrace gives the opportunity to make their introductions and Dane is smitten. Stalwood advises Dane to use the introduction to see more of Celia since Gray, her brother-in-law, is one of the suspects to be investigated. But Dane is apprehensive of furthering anything with Celia because when this case is closed, the duke will 'die' and Dane will move on to his next assignment. A relationship with Celia can only hurt her in the end. Will Dane take his impersonation too far and be discovered? Will Celia allow the duke to court her? Is there any chance for a future between Dane and Celia?
I enjoyed this book, but admittedly not as much as book 1. The spy/undercover/subterfuge angle worked just fine, but as predicted, the truth will come out and people will get hurt. I liked that while the mystery of Clairemont's killer and network were central to the story, it didn't overpower the growing relationship between Dane and Celia. Dane did have a conscience, thank goodness, so as things progressed with Celia, he was feeling that guilt. My big issue with this book is that we actually see very little romance. Celia is in love after a couple of meetings with Clairemont (Aiden), but Aiden sends her letters regularly and we know this because the author tells us. Unfortunately, it leaves the reader missing out on the bulk of their growing romance because we never see even a snippet of a letter or know what they talked about. Such a bummer, really. I did like that we see Dane get jealous over Stenfax. Celia smooths it over because she and Stenfax are becoming quite good friends in the wake of their ended engagement, but it affects Dane's possessive gene and makes him realize he really wants Celia more than just physically.
Celia and Dane share a handful of passionate moments but a few in particular were just kind of.... tacky. After Dane is hurt, Celia takes him up to her room to clean his wound (because that's totally appropriate). Then they have a quickie because they need to get back downstairs to everyone. Really? And the last time they are together in the book, it felt ridiculous and silly when it should have been happy and romantic. I dunno. It all felt too forced.
I did like how Dane's cover was blown and that he wouldn't give Celia his real name, all to protect her. I also thought it was just like Celia to say she would continue to keep up appearances for the sake of the crown. Of course, she did so because even after the deceit, she loved him. But the author kind of glossed over any options that would allow Dane and Celia to be together, marry, or have a future once the case was closed. Ultimately, Stalwood makes the decision for Dane, but that didn't feel right either. To be presented with Stalwood's option is one thing, but to be ordered to do it is quite another. I didn't think it was fair that Dane didn't have a choice since it was his career.
Editing issues in this book were very noticeable and they were stupid mistakes... No instead of not... that kind of thing. There were also several sentences I came across that just didn't make sense, almost like a wrong word was used but I couldn't really tell which word was wrong because it still didn't make sense. I don't know, but I was surprised that I stumbled on as many things as I did. Plot flow and the overall writing style was fine. Like I said, it was just stupid stuff that should have been caught easily by arc readers and an editor.
The only other thing that was weird was that the author chose to continue to call Dane Clairemont even when he was conversing with Stalwood (who was well aware of the subterfuge). I believe there was mention of Dane keeping 'in character' but it was just odd, and I've never read a story where the impersonation was handled that way. Even in narration. For example, when Celia is speaking to Clairemont but it's Dane's thoughts and point of view we are reading, his thoughts were written as Clairemont's thoughts, not Dane's. Does that make sense? For Celia's thoughts he would be Clairemont, but for Dane's thoughts, shouldn't they have been, well, Dane's? Honestly, it wasn't any source of confusion since it's a small cast of characters. I just found it odd that Dane's thoughts weren't conveyed as his own to the reader. I dunno. I'm nitpicking.
I give this book 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3. I did enjoy it but not as much as the first book, which I rated 4 stars. Steam in this book is a 3 for me. I felt a lot of the steam was forced into the story rather than flowing organically within. Book 1 was better on that score. Regardless, I'm interested in reading book 3 and I have it all queued up on my Kindle. Book 3 is Stenfax's story, the Earl Celia was engaged to in book 1.

After Dane is hurt, Celia takes him up to her room to clean his wound (because that's totally appropriate). Then they have a quickie because they need to get back downstairs to everyone. Really? And the last time they are together in the book, it felt ridiculous and silly when it should have been happy and romantic. I dunno. It all felt too forced.
I did like how Dane's cover was blown and that he wouldn't give Celia his real name, all to protect her. I also thought it was just like Celia to say she would continue to keep up appearances for the sake of the crown. Of course, she did so because even after the deceit, she loved him. But the author kind of glossed over any options that would allow Dane and Celia to be together, marry, or have a future once the case was closed. Ultimately, Stalwood makes the decision for Dane, but that didn't feel right either. To be presented with Stalwood's option is one thing, but to be ordered to do it is quite another. I didn't think it was fair that Dane didn't have a choice since it was his career.
Editing issues in this book were very noticeable and they were stupid mistakes... No instead of not... that kind of thing. There were also several sentences I came across that just didn't make sense, almost like a wrong word was used but I couldn't really tell which word was wrong because it still didn't make sense. I don't know, but I was surprised that I stumbled on as many things as I did. Plot flow and the overall writing style was fine. Like I said, it was just stupid stuff that should have been caught easily by arc readers and an editor.
The only other thing that was weird was that the author chose to continue to call Dane Clairemont even when he was conversing with Stalwood (who was well aware of the subterfuge). I believe there was mention of Dane keeping 'in character' but it was just odd, and I've never read a story where the impersonation was handled that way. Even in narration. For example, when Celia is speaking to Clairemont but it's Dane's thoughts and point of view we are reading, his thoughts were written as Clairemont's thoughts, not Dane's. Does that make sense? For Celia's thoughts he would be Clairemont, but for Dane's thoughts, shouldn't they have been, well, Dane's? Honestly, it wasn't any source of confusion since it's a small cast of characters. I just found it odd that Dane's thoughts weren't conveyed as his own to the reader. I dunno. I'm nitpicking.
I give this book 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3. I did enjoy it but not as much as the first book, which I rated 4 stars. Steam in this book is a 3 for me. I felt a lot of the steam was forced into the story rather than flowing organically within. Book 1 was better on that score. Regardless, I'm interested in reading book 3 and I have it all queued up on my Kindle. Book 3 is Stenfax's story, the Earl Celia was engaged to in book 1.

4 deceptively captivating stars. Have you ever read an overview and thought, "Yeah, this is going to be good"? That was my exact thought when I read this novel's blurb and I was so grateful that the story was pretty great. A story with passion, forbidden romance and suspense all set in a historical London made for a positively delightful read. I'm keeping this short and sweet, the read is beyond worth it and I need to get my hands on other works by Jess Michaels!

Il nonno delle due sorelle è davvero una brutta persona: le avrà anche cresciute dopo la morte della madre ma ha allontanato il padre, persona di rango inferiore, facendo credere che fosse morto.
Celia stringe un nuovo accordo col nonno e in cambio di un matrimonio titolato riceverà notizie sul padre.
E il ritorno in città del duca di Clairmont sembra essere la soluzione ideale.
Peccato che il vero duca sia morto in circostanze misteriose. Quindi chi lo sta impersonando per scoprire l'assassino e chi è un traditore della corona?
John Dane è la migliore spia al servizio del dipartimento della guerra e si sta spacciando per il duca. Orfano, ha vissuto una vita di stenti fino a quando è stato salvato e accolto dal conte di Stalwood ed è diventato la sua migliore risorsa.
Solo che l'incontro con Celia complica tutto: John è devoto alla causa ma il suo cuore lo spinge verso la ragazza complicando la missione.
Cosa ne sarà del loro vero amore e del lavoro?
Questo libro mi ha lasciato perplessa.
Celia non mi ha convinta, l'ho trovata abbastanza vuota e insipida. Ho apprezzato molto di più John, combattuto tra il dovere e la riconoscenza e la possibilità di trovare finalmente la felicità.
Forse non è scattato qualcosa, il libro è scorrevole e si legge velocemente, ma non mi ha appassionato.
La vicenda di spionaggio che fa da sfondo diventa quasi marginale e c'è poca azione.
Molto più interessante la storia dell'ex fidanzato Stenfax che sarà il protagonista del prossimo volume.

También me ha gustado. Celia me daba un poco de pena tras la novela anterior ya que anula su compromiso y se queda sin saber la verdad sobre su padre.
Ahora está sintiendo por el duque de Clairmont lo que nunca sintió por Stenfax. Con el duque ve una relación como la que tiene Rosalind con Gray. Me han gustado los dos protagonistas, la trama está bien llevada. Claro que Ayden no es quien dice ser y el final podría suponer un duro golpe para Celia. Seguiré leyendo esta serie y espero que al final la autor nos aclare el tema relacionado con las hermanas Fitzgilbert porque aquí no queda resuelto.
Lo único que habría cambiado es que me parece que ese primer beso está forzado en la historia, llega demasiado pronto. El encuentro habría ido igual de bien sin que dos desconocidos, que es lo que eran, se besaran.
En general no ha estado mal, se lee rápido y los protagonistas crean un duo complementario. Mi valoración un 3.5

I would like to apologize to the poor souls who happened to be outside of my home as I read this book. I now realize that yelling "Oh my God just get to the sex already!!" was not an appropriate reaction to my frustrations about the pace of this book. I will endeavor to try to control my outbursts in the future, but I make no guarantees.

oggi desidero parlarvi del secondo volume della serie Stagioni, firmato dall’autrice statunitense Jess Michaels che, anche questa volta, è riuscita a tenere desta la mia attenzione, tessendo una trama ricca di passione, segreti, inganni, intrighi e sentimenti! Con questo romanzo ci catapulta all’interno di una storia avvincente e dal sapore proibito, che fin dalle prime pagine, ci trasporta nel mondo spietato degli agenti segreti, così algido e controllato, fatto di luci e ombre, omissioni e bugie, dovere, obblighi e onore. Una condizione di vita che diventa normalità, per coloro che sono stati addestrati per diventare al pari delle armi, al servizio della Corona, impiegati nel Dipartimento della Guerra. Lo scopo di questi soldati dall’identità misteriosa? Infiltrarsi e indagare con ogni mezzo lecito e illecito, per salvaguardare la stabilità e la sicurezza del paese, comprese le sorti di chi, agenti, militari e civili, si trovano a correre seri pericoli, stritolati all’interno di una rete di incastri e inganni, dalle pericolose conseguenze. Sono dei superuomini, delle macchine sofisticate, istruiti nell’arte della guerra, dell’inganno e della dissimulazione. Sono imbattibili nel fare buon viso a cattivo gioco, nel mostrare sangue freddo in ogni circostanza, così come ci si aspetta da soldati algidi e calcolatori, abili anche nel gestire le emozioni, nel tenere a bada i sentimenti, ma soprattutto, le pulsioni del corpo e del cuore. Ehm…effettivamente NO… perchè “Aidan”, il personaggio principale di questo romanzo, sarà destinato a ben altro! Come scivolare sulla buccia di banana e “tradire” tutte le proprie convinzioni, nonostante sia stato addestrato per anni e sia considerato, a ragione, uno dei migliori nel suo campo! Per quanto faccia o dica, non potrà salvarsi dalla malia che sprigiona su di lui, la bella Celia Fitzgilbert! Ma una cosa è certa, ci sarà da divertirsi e da palpitare insieme a entrambi i protagonisti, mentre si scoprono sempre più invischiati e coinvolti, in un balletto ardente, fatto di molteplici passi falsi, alcuni avanti e altri indietro, compiuti sulle note di melodiosi ansiti e dei tanti sospirati “Vorrei ma non posso”, pronunciati a fior di labbra e con il respiro affannato, specialmente quando sono nascosti negli angoli più bui delle terrazze e dei giardini, che diventano i luoghi ideali in cui commettere quegli scivoloni ardenti, che a noi lettrici di romance, piacciono veramente tanto!
«Io non sono un gentiluomo» disse, indurendosi di fronte a qualsiasi obiezione che avrebbe potuto avere per sé o per Celia. Era una cosa per il re e per la nazione. «Conosco il mio dovere.»
Preparate il carnet quindi, perchè molte saranno le occasioni di frequentare le serate danzanti dell’alta società, soprattutto quando il ricco, affascinante e il più desiderato Duca di Clairemont, farà la sua comparsa nei salotti londinesi, dopo essere stato lontano dalla capitale per diversi anni. Un lungo periodo nel quale ha vissuto come un eremita, nella tenuta di campagna ereditata dopo la morte del padre, avvenuta dieci anni prima. Ed è proprio il castello di Kinghill, a essere l’iniziale e oscuro palcoscenico in cui prende avvio la storia, una fortezza sinistra e scolpita nella pietra, simbolo del potere della nobile e antica casata. Ma chi è il misterioso duca? Sicuramente un uomo bellissimo, singolare e solitario che ha evitato di prendere il proprio posto alla Camera dei Lord, ma che ha deciso di investire nei nuovi affari di Grayson Danford, un vero precursore e con una visione progressista, pronto ad aprire la strada al futuro, riconoscendo il potenziale dei canali, delle macchine a vapore e di tutte quelle invenzioni che avrebbero portato il Paese direttamente nel prossimo futuro. Ma oltre a essere un investitore, cosa nasconde il Duca di Clairemont? Bisogna scoprirlo, specialmente a fronte degli eventi che si delineano chiaramente fin dalle prime pagine!
"Quando lo vide dall’altra parte della stanza, un vivace sorriso le illuminò il viso e la sua forza lo colpì allo stomaco e lo fece quasi ricadere all’indietro. Nessuno lo aveva mai guardato in quel modo. Come se lui fosse tutto. Era sempre stato una nullità."
Ma facciamo un passo indietro, vi ricordate di Celia, la sorella minore di Rosalinde, che ha incontrato quel fusto di Grayson Danford in una locanda, durante una sosta forzata causata da una bufera di neve improvvisa? Il loro matrimonio, pieno di amore e passione, è stato celebrato meno di sei mesi prima, e ora tocca a Celia fare la conoscenza dell’uomo che le ruberà il cuore! Ma se state pensando sia un amore che nasce, si sviluppa e cresce attraverso un percorso semplice, così come potrebbe sembrare all’apparenza, vi state sbagliando di grosso, perchè ci sono mille situazioni e ostacoli che faranno a gara per rendere complicato e impossibile, anche l’evolversi del loro rapporto! D’altronde, dopo aver amato Rosalinde e Gray, che fin dall’inizio si sono trovati a occupare posizioni opposte, tanto da definirsi nemici per buona parte del loro romanzo, non mi aspettavo niente di meno! La verità? E’ chiaro che all’autrice piace creare un po’ di tormento, per farci sospirare e attendere trepidanti l’agognato il lieto fine! Vi anticipo già che sarà veramente impossibile immaginare a quale stratagemma farà ricorso per modificare il corso degli eventi, soprattutto per mettere ogni tassello al posto giusto, e dare ai due innamorati, proprio ciò che il loro cuore anela,
ovvero un tipo di amore esclusivo, potente, passionale e travolgente come quello che anima Gray e Rosalinde!
"Lui. Voleva lui. Perché l’amore che provava non aveva nulla a che fare con il suo nome o il suo titolo. Aveva tutto a che fare con il modo in cui lui la guardava e la toccava e la faceva sentire nel profondo, fino al midollo. Come se fosse amata, come se fosse perfetta... come se fosse sua."
Sono veramente tanti gli aspetti che hanno reso questa lettura molto piacevole, a cominciare dallo stile narrativo dell’autrice, che appare scorrevole e disinvolto, ma altrettanto elegante e avvolgente, reso ancora più efficace dalla puntuale ed esperta traduzione di Isabella Nanni. Ma oltre alla fervida fantasia, che ha permesso alla Michaels di creare intrecci, dinamiche e nodi scorsoi, ho anche apprezzato la sua abilità narrativa, nel tessere una trama complessa e articolata, che si è suddivisa in una traccia principale, che ha rincorso la storia d’amore tra Celia e Aidan, per poi lasciare spazio a diverse sotto trame, che trovano il modo di alternarsi sulla scena, tirando i fili di dinamiche particolari, che si dipanano attraverso i vari personaggi, che prendono il loro posto nel romanzo. Figure minacciose che arrivano da lontano oppure parenti serpenti e onnipresenti, con richieste impossibili e segreti ancora celati, così come ricatti che continuano ad alimentare antiche sofferenze, che al di là dello sconcerto che provocano, hanno il merito di rendere ancora più interessanti e avvincenti, le pieghe sulle quali si inerpica la storia e che sanno donare nel complesso, apprezzabile profondità al romanzo.
"C’era molto sotto la superficie di quest’uomo. A volte intravedeva un mare agitato di emozioni e di dolore che lui teneva segreto. Lei si trovò a voler sapere tutto. Voleva condividerlo fino in fondo. Voleva alleviarlo nel miglior modo possibile."
E poi… continua a tenere banco il mistero di cui Gregory Fitzgilbert, il terribile nonno di Celia e Rosalinde, è il crudele depositario, diventando a tutti gli effetti il filo conduttore che unisce tra loro i primi due romanzi della serie. Sono indotta a credere quindi, si tratti di un mistero che troverà soluzione soltanto nell’ultimo volume! A mano a mano che si entra nel vivo, la storia assume le esplicite sfumature Spicy, anche se inizialmente è più uno Slow Burn, in quanto per trovare i momenti più brucianti, contrariamente a quanto invece accaduto nel racconto precedente, bisogna arrivare a metà libro. La seconda parte risulta quella più dinamica e ricca di colpi di scena, mentre quella iniziale è stata utilizzata dall’autrice, per gettare le basi della storia, soprattutto per analizzare le vicende che caratterizzano i vari personaggi, che fin dalle prime pagine, sono impegnati a studiarsi a vicenda e a prendersi letteralmente le misure, a causa di motivazioni e questioni diverse! Nel caso di Celia e “Aidan”, la cosa lampante è che si piacciono da subito, nonostante il bon ton, tutte le incertezze e le timidezze del caso, specialmente per i ruoli dei quali, consapevoli o ignari, si ritrovano a dover interpretare, come pedine all’interno di un gioco più grande di loro!
«Molto bene» mormorò, reprimendo l’ondata di dubbi che gli saliva in petto, che diceva che non era altro che un delinquente di strada, un buono a nulla che non sarebbe mai stato all’altezza di un duca, eremita bastardo o meno che fosse.
Esiste un sommerso e un “non detto”, che nel corso delle pagine si amplia e si allarga a macchia d’olio, fino a portare a galla un passato che non può più essere taciuto! In questo volume è quello di Aidan a creare nuovo sgomento, in quanto quello di Celia già lo conosciamo. Rivelazioni che arrivano ad agitare nel profondo, soprattutto per il modo di raccontare dell’uomo, così cauto, sincero e schietto, che trova finalmente la maniera di far emergere quella voragine interiore, che è stata per lungo tempo soltanto sua. Un abisso che lo rende, a tutti gli effetti, un uomo affascinante e degno di nota, soprattutto intenso, profondo e tenero, nel rivelare e mettere a nudo le sue infinite fragilità e difficoltà, del tutto umane. Soltanto così “Aidan” trova la sua vera dimensione, nonché la maniera migliore per palesarsi per quello che è intimamente, in modo da poter vivere a tutto tondo i suoi veri sentimenti e conquistare l’amore che merita.
«Ci sono molte ragioni per cui una persona può sentirsi insicura in casa propria.» Lei deglutì. «Sembra che siate voi ad avere bisogno di essere salvato, Vostra Grazia.»
Già a partire dalla dedica dell’autrice, sono stata sicura si sarebbe rivelata una lettura capace di emozionarmi. Leggera e passionale, ma anche dotata di quei risvolti profondi che mi piacciono tanto! Una storia che si è rivelata veramente piacevole, multi sfaccettata, ben bilanciata e intensa, tanto da arrivare a esplorare l’anima e il cuore di un uomo dai mille nomi e dalle molteplici maschere, che per destino e per lavoro, si trova costretto a fingere e a diventare “personaggio”, lasciando giacere nei propri abissi interiori, i suoi lati più fragili, veri, insicuri e desiderosi d’amore. Un uomo e un eroe, di cui nessuno sentirà mai parlare, abituato ad agire nelle retrovie, scaltro, silenzioso, risoluto e controllato e con un passato doloroso, (che scoprirete) e che nel tempo è diventato un'arma infallibile al servizio della Corona, perdendo il diritto di condurre una vita vera. Una dedica che si riferisce al protagonista, ma che nel bene e nel male, può adattarsi a ognuno di noi, che ogni giorno, come è normale che sia, siamo costretti a metterci in discussione e a trovare in noi stessi la forza e le motivazioni per guardare il bicchiere mezzo pieno e andare avanti! Ma lascio a voi scoprire ogni cosa e maturare le vostre personali considerazioni!
«Com’è?» chiese. «Tra te e lui?» Lei lo guardò sbattendo le palpebre. «Non è niente» sussurrò. «E com’è tra me e te?» Lei trattenne il fiato e poi sollevò le mani tremanti per prendergli le guance. «È tutto» mormorò.
Un libro che mi è piaciuto veramente tanto, e che consiglio a chi ama gli storici, ma con una marcia in più! Un romanzo che è riuscito a coinvolgermi e a intrattenermi, soprattutto per il suo lato introspettivo e la sua sfumatura spy, che ha soddisfatto il mio lato più avventuroso! Voi che lettrici siete? Amate il pericolo e il mistero? Buona lettura e alla prossima!

Sadly, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the previous one.
I couldn't connect to either of the main characters and their relations developed rather quickly. It might not be a pure instant love, but it was close.
Also, this one seems to be a lot of tamer than the previous book. The sex scenes felt rushed and they lacked chemitry and spark.

Wow! This was the kind of book that just grips you from the first page until the last and then makes you want to read it again, immediately, just in case you missed anything the first time!
John Dane is a spy for the crown, he has been called in a case involving the murder of a traitor and has been tasked with assuming the identity of the deceased Aiden, the Duke of Clairemont to weed out his co-conspirators. Due to incriminating letters found at the duke's residence, Grayson Danford is John's prime suspect.
Celia Fitzgilbert is now living with Gray and Rosalinde and is weathering the storm her broken engagement to Gray's brother has caused. Celia is still desperate to get the information her grandfather has about her father, but has resigned herself to the fact she may never get that information.
Celia and Clairemont meet and the spark between them is immediate, until Clairemont discovers who Celia is. When he tells his superior of her, he is told that "courting" Celia will be a perfect cover to investigate Gray. Clairemont is not happy about this devolvement but knows his duty, he sets out to woo Celia and try to figure out if Gray is guilty or not.
Clairemont soon finds himself falling for Celia and she reciprocates - but he knows that they can never have a future together and he is beginning to hate himself for his deception.
Celia is thrilled to be courted by Clairemont and decides to make a deal with the devil - one she immediate regrets. When she decides the future with Clairemont is more important than the past, she comes clean with him and tells him her whole story, even though she fears he will turn from her when he learns the truth. Clairemont surprises her by telling her he doesn't care about her past and offers to help her find her father.
When secrets are finally revealed, hearts are broken and there doesn't seem to be anyway these two can have a HEA.
Ms. Michaels has really out done herself with this book, her writing is impeccable and she was able to make this reader feel every emotion she wrote, I felt the hope, the pain, the betrayal, the anger, the joy and the love. The pace of the book was perfect, it flowed nicely, the love scenes were on the warmer side and the ending was spectacular.
I would recommend reading the books in order, but there is enough backstory to read this as a stand alone title. I am impatiently awaiting the next book!

Ms. Michaels has really out done herself with this book, her writing is impeccable and she was able to make this reader feel every emotion she wrote, I felt the hope, the pain, the betrayal, the anger, the joy and the love. The pace of the book was perfect, it flowed nicely, the love scenes were on the warmer side and the ending was spectacular.
I would recommend reading the books in order, but there is enough backstory to read this as a stand alone title. I am impatiently awaiting the next book!

I've been reading Jess Michaels for years and I while her books are decidedly more sensual than the other authors I read, I've always enjoyed her stories. This one however, much like the first in the series was a let-down.
As an agent of the War Office, John Dane is called upon to assume the identity of the Duke of Claremont after the real duke is found dead. In order to further his investigation, he meets and then courts Celia Fitzgilbert. What starts out as a means of gaining more information about Celia's brother in law, becomes much more complicated as John's feelings become involved.
Solid plot right? So what was the problem?
1) Celia was insipid and completely uninspiring as a heroine. Other than her beauty, there was literally nothing interesting about her.
2) The insta-love/insta-connection or whatever it is that draws them to one another initially is really weak. Let me be clear, some of JM's novella's are amongst my favourite HRs so I don't have any issues with a relationship progressing quickly. But this wasn't a novella and the attraction between these characters didn't seem natural to me. It felt a tad forced.
3) These characters had zero sizzle. I felt like their relationship moved form 0-100 fairly quickly only because the story needed to create this huge emotional connection between them so that when his betrayal came to light it would be all the more devastating to Celia. But I didn't feel like that necessary connection was earned - these two people were hot for one another way before they actually knew anything about each other.
4) The whole sub-plot involving Celia's past and her missing father was never fully explained in the end so why bother to add it when it didn't do much for the story? It ended up being entirely superfluous. For a girl who early in the book goes to make a bargain with her devil grandfather out of desperation to suddenly just give up the search for her true identity when she found love made no sense at all.
5) The anachronisms. Did regency folk say "shit" a lot? Because somehow I don't think so.
6) The overuse of italics to emphasise so many words. It was really distracting and completely unnecessary.

Celia was a major fixture in her sister Rosalinde's finding love in An Affair in Winter. Rosalinde and Celia share a bond that is as strong as the heartache and disappointments they have had to live through. A Spring Deception sheds more light on Celia and her continued quests for answers in her search for the truth about her family. Her journey is paved with deceit and it takes her into a world far more complicated than any she has experienced before. As often happens Ms. Michaels sets the course for events that are shocking and fan the flames of forbidden love with all it's complications, but she once again delivers the thrill of love with all it's tragedies and triumphs in a story that is emotional, entertaining and worthy of a five star review.

Avevamo già conosciuto la figura di Celia nel precedente romanzo, ma nel racconto a lei dedicato il suo personaggio viene approfondito e sboccia in maniera rigogliosa.
Una volta rotto il fidanzamento con un conte, la reputazione della giovane non ne ha certo giovato. Per Celia un matrimonio titolato rappresenta l’unico mezzo per tenere fede al patto stretto con il crudele nonno, l’unico modo per costringere l’arcigno anziano a rivelarle l’identità del misterioso padre.
La fortuna sembra sorriderle quando il duca di Clairemont riappare in società dopo anni di isolamento e comincia a corteggiarla, offrendole una potenziale soluzione ai suoi problemi, ma le cose non sono così facili come sembrano.
Aiden Clairemont è in realtà John Dane, una spia del Governo, che veste i panni del gentiluomo per investigare sull’omicidio del vero duca e su un complotto ai danni dello Stato. Certo, l’autrice non renderà tutto semplice alla nostra coppia; i due dovranno affrontare ostacoli e pericoli che rafforzeranno maggiormente il loro legame.
Che ve lo dico a fare, care Fenici, cosa penso di questo romanzo? Jess Michaels per me è una garanzia, una conferma di riuscita che si rinnova di storia in storia, con una penna riconoscibile, ma sempre originale e differente.
Celia rispecchia il modello delle sue protagoniste: audace, intelligente, pronta a sfidare il mondo per amore e per ciò che ritiene giusto, una dama determinata e fiera. È una narratrice attiva della sua vita ed è estremamente facile entrare in empatia con il suo personaggio e tifare per lei.
John e la sua bella sono riusciti a catturare un pezzettino speciale del mio cuore, la loro storia così romantica è piena di sentimenti intensi, che mi hanno fatto sentir le farfalle nello stomaco.
Senza ombra di dubbio, Inganno di primavera è uno tra i più adorabili romance storici che ho letto, un racconto che mi ha lasciato una bella sensazione di dolcezza, di serenità e leggerezza.

Inizio col dire che questo libro mi ha veramente sorpresa. Pensavo che l’autrice ci raccontasse la storia di Celia e Stenfax, una storia partita con il piede sbagliato e finita male, e invece ci regala qualcosa di completamente inaspettato.
È una storia d’amore che prende il via con un omicidio e un cambio d’identità da parte del protagonista, John, una spia del governo. Da lì si arriva a un vero e proprio colpo di fulmine con la nostra amata Celia.
Da un lato c’è John, un uomo dal passato turbolento e doloroso, che non ha mai conosciuto il significato della parola “amore”. Dall’altro c’è Celia, desiderosa di un amore viscerale e struggente. Non si conoscono, eppure le loro strade si intrecciano fino a diventare inseparabili.
Un susseguirsi di bugie da parte di entrambi li porterà a dover affrontare la verità…
Riusciranno a superarla? Riusciranno ad andare avanti, nonostante tutto?
Non voglio svelare altro. Questo libro mi ha colpito profondamente: è ricco di passione, intrighi e consapevolezze da parte dei protagonisti. È un susseguirsi di colpi di scena che non annoiano mai e tengono il lettore sempre vigile e coinvolto, dalla prima all’ultima pagina. La lettura è scorrevole, leggera e fluida; si legge tutto d’un fiato, senza difficoltà. Più si va avanti, più cresce la voglia di proseguire: è impossibile chiudere un capitolo senza la curiosità di leggere il successivo.
È come una calamita: ti attrae e difficilmente riesci a staccarti o a stancarti.
In genere non amo le digressioni nei romanzi, ma qui l’autrice le utilizza con misura e quelle poche presenti non risultano mai pesanti.
L’autrice ci fa immergere completamente nella storia, ci fa identificare con i protagonisti e ci trascina nel loro mondo fatto di sogni, desiderio e passione.
E l’epilogo? Semplicemente stupendo. Non si poteva scegliere finale migliore.
Spero con tutto il cuore di leggere un sequel altrettanto sbalorditivo, magari incentrato sulla vita di Stenfax… Chissà, forse riusciremo a regalargli un lieto fine.

Secondo libro della serie "Stagioni" di Jess Michaels. Ci racconta le vicende di Celia che avevamo conosciuta nel libro precedente. Dopo aver annullato il matrimonio con un Conte, la tragedia sfiorata ai danni della sorella Rosalinde che ha rischiato la vita per mano del crudele nonno e la paura di dover affrontare uno scandalo, si trasferisce a casa della sorella e del cognato Greyson rinunciando così alle informazioni sull'identità del padre che il nonno avrebbe reso note solo se si fosse sposata con un nobile.
Caso vuole che il suo ritorno in società dopo mesi di assenza venga notato niente meno che dal Duca di Clairemont.
"Nessuno lo aveva mai guardato in quel modo. Come se lui fosse tutto."
Il Duca di Clairemont dopo aver vissuto per anni in solitaria si ripresenta in società creando non poco scalpore tra la nobiltà e molti pettegolezzi per non parlare delle giovani donne che cercano di catturare il suo interesse, sarà soltanto Celia ad incantarlo.
Ma il Duca nasconde un segreto e il corteggiamento a Celia serve solo ad introdurlo in società.
Aiden in verità non può innamorarsi di Celia lei è troppo per un uomo come lui e non merita la sua devozione. Celia farà di tutto per abbattere le sue barriere e fargli ammettere che anche lui ha diritto all'amore.
«Ora» ansimò. «Sei veramente mia.»
«Sono stata tua appena ti ho visto» rispose lei ansimando. «E sarò tua finché le stelle non si spegneranno.»
Ma cosa accadrà quando scoprirà la vera identità del Duca? Riuscirà a perdonarlo?
E Aiden riuscira a tenerla al sicuro dai pericoli a cui è stata sottoposta a sua insaputa?
L'autrice mi ha conquistata per l'ennesima volta, ho percepito i tormenti dei protagonisti e la tensione sessuale che scorre tra di loro ogni volta che si trovano nella stessa stanza. Ritmo scorrevole e coinvolgente, bello il rapporto tra le due sorelle, ma anche l'amicizia che si respira con il cognato Grey e l'ex fidanzato il conte Stenfax.
Come sempre la traduzione a cura di Isabella Nanni è impeccabile.

Come ho detto per il primo volume, questa è la serie che mi ha riavvicinato al genere dopo tanto tempo, e confermo che mi è piaciuto molto anche il secondo. Stavolta la storia d'amore è quella di Celia (la sorella di Rosalinde già protagonista del primo libro) che è ancora alla ricerca del suo lieto fine: ed ecco che finalmente lo trova. Il protagonista maschile, John, è una spia che si finge un duca per stanare dei traditori, e nella sua missione incrocerà proprio Celia fingendosi suo corteggiatore... fingendo però solo fino a un certo punto. Infatti, mentre Celia si innamora praticamente subito dell'affascinante duca, anche lui in realtà cede ai sentimenti e si trova oltremodo combattuto tra il dovere e l'amore.
La storia è molto avvincente, rispetto al primo libro anche ricca di azione e suspense, aspetti che la rendono originale e soprattutto molto diversa dal primo libro, il che ovviamente è un lato positivo. Avevo proprio voglia di sapere come sarebbe andata a finire, ho letto le avventure di questa coppia in modo curioso e attento, anche perchè ho trovato Celia un personaggio femminile coraggioso e vivo, apparentemente è la sorella più debole e più vittima degli eventi, invece si rivela tosta e pronta a mettersi in gioco per proteggere la famiglia, l’uomo che ama e persino la corona.
Lo consiglio a tutti gli appassionati del genere, anche perché non è particolarmente “sdolcinato” e pieno di avvenimenti interessanti.
Come ho detto per il primo volume, questa è la serie che mi ha riavvicinato al genere dopo tanto tempo, e confermo che mi è piaciuto molto anche il secondo. Stavolta la storia d'amore è quella di Celia (la sorella di Rosalinde già protagonista del primo libro) che è ancora alla ricerca del suo lieto fine: ed ecco che finalmente lo trova. Il protagonista maschile, John, è una spia che si finge un duca per stanare dei traditori, e nella sua missione incrocerà proprio Celia fingendosi suo corteggiatore... fingendo però solo fino a un certo punto. Infatti, mentre Celia si innamora praticamente subito dell'affascinante duca, anche lui in realtà cede ai sentimenti e si trova oltremodo combattuto tra il dovere e l'amore.
La storia è molto avvincente, rispetto al primo libro anche ricca di azione e suspense, aspetti che la rendono originale e soprattutto molto diversa dal primo libro, il che ovviamente è un lato positivo. Avevo proprio voglia di sapere come sarebbe andata a finire, ho letto le avventure di questa coppia in modo curioso e attento, anche perchè ho trovato Celia un personaggio femminile coraggioso e vivo, apparentemente è la sorella più debole e più vittima degli eventi, invece si rivela tosta e pronta a mettersi in gioco per proteggere la famiglia, l’uomo che ama e persino la corona.
Lo consiglio a tutti gli appassionati del genere, anche perché non è particolarmente “sdolcinato” e pieno di avvenimenti interessanti.

Il Duca di Clairemont - dopo una lunga assenza dalla mondanità - torna in società suscitando l'interesse generale.
In realtà il Duca è morto da mesi e "Aiden" è una spia in missione. Comincia così a fare la corte a Celia Fitzgilbert, una gentildonna che ha alle spalle un fidanzamento rotto, offrendole una potenziale soluzione a tutti i suoi problemi. Il finto corteggiamento a Celia, però, ben presto diventa reale.
Tra i due scorrono emozioni viscerali, impossibili da relegare in un angolo quando il compito della spia entra nel vivo dell'azione. Ma come reagirà Celia quando le bugie verranno a galla? E cosa ne sarà del futuro che sognava con l'uomo che lei chiama Aiden?
Una storia che "fa credere alle favole" (dato che Celia aspira ad un legame come quello che vivono sua sorella e suo cognato) e permette ai lettori di percepire le emozioni tormentate che i personaggi vivono e tutta la tensione che scorre tra i protagonisti. Ritmo scorrevole, soprattutto nella seconda parte.
Amanti del "toccala e vedrai" - e dello spicy - questa storia fa al caso vostro.
Il rapporto e la complicità tra sorelle ha dato il tocco di "magia" per farmi valutare questo volume cinque stelle.

Ma perché allora si spaccia per lui?
Perché avvicinare Celia?
Ma soprattutto chi è veramente?
La storia è scritta in modo fluido e il pizzico di suspense che ruota attorno alla verità sul Duca rende la lettura molto intrigante.
L’intreccio narrativo è ben costruito così come l’evolversi della storia tra i protagonisti,che silenziosamente si fanno largo nel cuore del lettore.
Celia è un personaggio che sorprende e che ho rivalutato.
Il Duca, con il suo passato e con l’uomo che è adesso è impossibile non amarlo.
Nuovi e vecchi personaggi fanno capolino tra le righe e io non vedo l’ora di leggere la prossima storia .

A Spring Deception, Book 2 of the Seasons series, was about Miss Celia Fitzgilbert and Mr. John Dane, aka His Grace Aiden Alexander Charles Morland Waring, the 16th Duke of Clairemont.
Masquerading as the Duke of Clairemont in order to find out who murdered said Duke and to infiltrate the late nobleman's contacts, John was told to court Celia in order to safely and secretly navigate the ton so he could make inquiries into acquaintances of the dead man.
John, while investigating the murder of the real Duke, met and fell in love with Celia, even though he knew they could never be together once the truth came out. Celia also fell in love with the "Duke".
The danger in the story was a bit muted and...surreal, almost as if the author wasn't quite certain how to make it believable. The angst and drama were minuscule at best. The passion was...tame, but evident. There was little to no humor, and any other emotions were bland. The ending was disappointing and secrets that started in the first book still remained a secret in this book as well. The author left so much unsaid and undone that it felt like a cliffhanger.
I can't say I enjoyed this book. It was hard to read, like trying to walk through quicksand but sinking instead of moving forward. Definitely not a five-star book.

I very much loved this book, even though I wasn't sure I would since I wasn't a big Celia fan after the first book. John Dane is a spy and his latest assignment is to impersonate the Duke of Clairemont in order to find a a murderer and a traitor. He meets Celia at a ball and they are both interested in each other. John knows that, unfortunately, nothing can ever come of his attraction since he is a nobody and is essentially lying to Celia by pretending to be the Duke. The tension is high and I was wondering how this could possibly work out to a happy ending.
The only issue I had was that finding Celia and Rosalind's real father was a large focus of the first two books in the series. At the end of this book, his identity is not mentioned at all and I'm not sure it is going to be mentioned since the other books are featuring the Danford family, not the Fitzgilberts. I wish the mystery had been solved in this book.

Un elegante e sofisticato intreccio di amori contrastati, di scelte sofferte e di desideri che si insinuano dolcemente sotto pelle...
La scrittura di questa autrice è evocativa e immersiva, aiutata moltissimo dall' ottima traduzione che , diciamocelo, è basilare per avere un romanzo di qualità...

Refreshing historical romance
After reading scads of Regency romances in which the heroine always gets her titled hero, it's refreshing to read of a heroine of undistinguished background get a hero of similarly common ancestry. The romance proceeds quickly and not without its conflicts, but the author does both the reader and the protagonists the favor of intelligence and candid conversation. In other words, we don't have to suffer from wild leaps to erroneous conclusions and contrived misunderstandings. There were a handful of egregious editing errors that pulled me from the story, which reduced my rating on this book from five to four stars. Otherwise, well done!

Although part of a series, this would be easy to read without having read the first one. Celia is trying to marrying to please her grandfather so that he will give her the name of her birth father. It must be an aristocrat, and after one failed engagement (story in book 1), having a Duke courting her is perfect.
The problem is that he is actually a spy impersonating the Duke who was a recluse, so it is not difficult. The problem comes later when both develop feelings for the other. Celia needs this society marriage, and Aidan must disappear after the job is done.
