We are now just under 4 years away from the year 0, the end of a 26.000 year era and the beginning of another. It will be seen in the heavens on December 21, 2012 for the first time in 260 centuries. What will be seen on earth, however, is another matter. The Mayan prophecies relating to this galactic realignment are clearly set forth, and broken down, in this easy to read volume. But it doesn't dumb them down, thankfully. And it's pointed out that the transformation will take place over time, not in a quick fix I want it now manner that has become ingrained in our culture. The Mayan warnings about materialism, technology, the rape of our planet, and the loss of a sense of connection with the earth were all well founded and continue to be so. We can't go on like this. No how. No way.
Interesting. I had to re-read the section on the Mayan Long Calendar to make sure I understand it. No, the world is not coming to an end, but there will be changes in the next baktun, which is approximately 5126 solar years. This will happen after 12/21/12 using our calendar. There will also be an alignment of earth and planets with a point in the Milky Way which occurs every 26,000 years. Mayans believe that the world won't end but will transition to a new age and in this transition, there may be discomfort or a disaster, even if it's just a local disaster.
Its title does not mislead. This book is thorough, insightful, sparing, and anything but alarmist -- Benedict seems to have no egotist's reflections on the matter whatsoever, an ideal condition for properly presenting material which was originally, at least theoretically, obtained in objective states of mind.
I probably shouldn't have read this book and then read "The Road" right afterwards. It made me feel as if mankind is doomed, too many apocalytpic books at once! This book is great if you are at all interested in theories that 2012 will be the end of the world as we know it. A lot of info to take in and digest.
This was a beautiful book but not what I thought it was. I gave it to my niece because her father is from Guatamala and she was much happier with it than I was.
From the book: "The dominant message emerging from the Mayan prophecies for 2012 is that we are the prophecy, and that whatever happens in the future is dependent on the choices we make."
