I kept bouncing between a 2 or 3 star rating for this book. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t anything specifically unique or overly creative. I skipped many paragraphs as the book went on since they didn’t seem to really add to the story, but what I’d filled lines instead. I just didn’t come away from this book feeling any magic, ya know there was no vibe from it that really hooked me in. The heroine, Anya, was just a normal plain Jane back on earth. No education, regular customer service job. Her personality was just normal I suppose you’d say, nothing unique. The hero, Zar, he seemed sweet enough. But I don’t know why the guards were so afraid of him or thought he’d hurt her. Nothing else later in the book led us to believe he would. Sex scenes were mediocre. Nothing overly descriptive. The first were extremely brief. But I’m so glad the heroine didn’t whine and complain and fight the idea of a relationship. The secondary character, Tyree, came across very small and feminine in this book. So I’m really not sure how I’m going to feel about this girly small character morphing into a male that ends up with Grace in what looks to be the 3rd book planned. It will be extremely hard to make this character desirable after painting them in this book as a tiny elf like female. The next books preview makes it sound WAY more entertaining based on the first chapter than this one. I’ll pick it up on KU when it comes out to see if it is in fact better than this one.
. It's a fun read but I also found it easy to put down and not pick up again. Anya gets taken by aliens and forced to be the sexual partner of another slave, Zar, who is a gladiator slave. The plot is simple. There's too much sex and I skimmed a fair bit of the last 3rd. The kidnapped women are pretty interchangeable personality-wise. It was too convenient to the plot that all but one of the women are happy with their cage mates. I did like the way Anya and Zar get 'aquainted' over the first half of the book, but I could do with less current pop culture references. That kinda thing is just going to get more and more dated as time passes.
The most interesting character was another 'pixie' alien 'pet' that helps them escape. She even gets her own POV from time to time. The reader is treated to both Anya and Zar's POVs and normally I like that but Zar's POV didn't really add anything to the story imo. So it's another simplistic x-rated alien kidnap story.
So this is actually the third time I've read this book because I really want to read this series. I do really like Zar he was such a sweety who has been through so much. I'm surprised at my 3 star rating because I feel it's maybe more deserving of a 3.5. While I wasn't blown away by this, I am very interested to read some of the other aliens' books.
Have you ever been reading a series but you're not happy with who the next book is about? You really wanted to see another character's story instead? So you step away from the series. Well this is what has happened to this series for me. The next book is about Shadow who I have zero interest in reading but I think this series has an over-arching storyline so I'm kinda stuck. Anyway I reread this because I made plans to force my way through Shadow's book and keep reading the series....so we'll see if in the next few days I actually read Shadow or come back in another year and reread this again. Shrugs.
Anya goes to sleep in her flannel two piece moose print pj's only to wake up as a prisoner of humanoid boar like aliens on a slave space craft. More than that, she and nine other captured Earth females are expected to breed with alien gladiators whether they want to or not. Refusal will get the guilty person's head blown by slave collars they are now wearing.
Time to wakey wakey Anya.
Turns out it's all real as Anya is shoved into a cell with an alien humanoid male who resembles a lion, tale and all. Though he seems to minimize the time it takes to complete a breeding episode and make it as gentle as possible, his demeanor is otherwise animalistic and cruel which is understandable as he's the #1 ranked gladiator.
With no hope of escape or ability to take over the ship, Anya is forced to accept her fate until hope arrives in the form of a telepathic 3 foot elf like alien that the captain has taken as a pet.

New author/new series. I believe this is a contemporary (though I can't confirm) SciFi alien abduction erotic romance start of a series installment that has been done in multiple ways and scenarios - abducted by slavers plot. I do want to include, for those with triggers, that there are scenes of non-consensual sex (breeding) though the actual scenes are filtered to include only minimal aspects of that. However, there is a follow up scene that could be disturbing as it includes information on past sexual abuse. Consider yourself warned.
Saw this come across my feed and felt for the purchase price it was worth checking out. A new to me author, it was a solid read but without any real surprises or content that separated itself from other similar themed stories. I really would have appreciated more depth or maybe a blind side or two. One non-spoiler example is a pirate attack scene. I had to wonder what ever became of the pirate ship itself? Attention to details and follow through make or break a story for me.
Secondary characters. The author has set the stage for the remaining Earth females and even alien gladiators to be featured in future installments. This is dicey as readers already have gotten a taste of the intial stages of those characters so it's going to be interesting to see what can be built on.
My issues. For the purchase price I received a solid story though the lack of depth in the world building and character development was problematic. I kept hoping for a secret diamond in the rough element that would elevate this story to more. Say a pilot who was secretly a crown prince or a captured prisoner who was a billionaire. Something that would make sense of a future home base for the crew of misfits. Maybe it's more that I want my HFN to settle me emotionally? Whatever.
ps.... for any reader who considers an alien lion like character to be paranormal, he's not. Zar does not change or shape shift. What he is is what he is. An alien species. All characters in this story and series are aliens. Just because they look different doesn't mean it's not normal for them and that WE are the paranormal beings...... Please don't add deceptive paranormal/shapeshifter tags.
This was a sweet quick sci-fi-romance it was kind of instalove but It was enjoyable enough. It could probably do with a bit more fleshing out though as the world-building wasn’t very elaborate but it was well written otherwise. Anya is kidnapped from Earth along with various other females and wakes up as a slave on a spaceship. Each female is then placed with an alien male for breeding purposes.
Anya finds herself sharing the cell of a feline type alien called Zar. He’s very lion-like and has been a slave his whole life born into captivity he is a gladiator who fights in arenas for whoever owns him at that time. The plan is to breed the woman before selling them on and neither have any say in the matter. Despite this I didn’t find this a dark read Zar is an absolute sweetie and try’s to make things as easy as possible for Anya.
The characters apart from the main ones we’re not that distinguishable and the story itself did feel quite simplistic. On a brighter note there’s a lot of steamy lion action with this one. From here Anya gets everyone on board and stages a mutiny which seems to go surprisingly well. There was no great surprises with this it was an easy light read that passed a couple of hours. I enjoyed it enough to maybe try the second book but it isn’t a masterpiece by any means.
DNF -quit at 65% I just couldn’t get into this. The flow is extremely slow, which didn't help to pull me in. The main characters are ok for the situation they are in, but nothing remarkable. but the premise of the story is just too harsh to be entertaining. The forced sex, practically rape -just to survive, was not an enjoyable thing to read. The general slave/captive vibe was too heavy for to long to want to continue. I want to enjoy a book, feel great when I’m done, not emotionally wrung out with the misery written. The bizarre humor interjected into this just does not make it better either. The relationships developing between the gladiators and kidnapped women just seemed forced & unrealistic. There were also a lot of gaps in the plot, or inconsistencies that just didn’t work. Definitely feel that I wasted my time on this book.
At my age, life is to short & my time to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
Well... it wasn't bad..but nothing too original either. The h was veryyy accepting of her situation. To be honest who knows how we would react in a situation when you are being abducted by aliens and locked with a lion man in a cell...maybe I would be the same as her. Anyways ... in the beginning the H was portrait as an animal and the aliens didn't gave Anya any chance to stay alive with Zar ..I don't understand why tho...he is nothing but sweet and gentle the whole story , so yeah... What was a bit weird is how Anya reacted to his fur ... like " ohh I love his fur on my vajayjay" blah blah blah...Truth to be told, Zar is indeed a lion-man , with whiskers, tail and all. "He’s the perfect merger of man and cat. The perfect combination of hard muscle and soft fur. The perfect union of lithe movement and prodigious strength" In conclusion I did enjoyed this. The whole slave revolution ,the other pairs and their will to be free was a good bonus to the story. I want Shadows story cos I am a sucker for bad boys :)
I was recommended to read this book by the Facebook group Romance with Aliens who look like Aliens. This is such an interesting and funny story. It’s exactly how I would react in this situation. Poor Zar his life and friendship made me cry ugly tears. I would have liked to know more about his people. I can’t believe this is a new author! Wow such great work and so imaginative. I’ve read a lot of alien romance and I am impressed. I love the multiple POVs. I am most definitely going to keep reading this author’s work. The excerpt for the next book made me laugh so hard! I can’t wait
This series has lots of potential so I'm hoping it gets better with following books. I did enjoy Zar and getting to know more about this horrific past.
I was in the mood for total escapism and being a fan of SciFi romance I decided to give this new-to-me author a try with the first book in a series, Galaxy of the Gladiators.
A group of 10 women were stolen from earth and this is the story of one of them. Anya, along with a group of women were somehow taken in the middle of the night and end up as slaves aboard a space ship. They are each put in a cage with a Gladiator slave and ordered to ‘mate’. Anya is thrown into a cage with Zan, a humanoid being with definite feline features. Although not cruel while ‘mating’ there is no kind of warmth or anything. But Anya senses a kindness in Zan and with the aid of a communicator implanted in all slaves, she is able to communicate and is slowly attracted to him despite the horrific circumstances. When she learns what the future holds for the ship of slaves, she slowly begins to think about escape for all of them.
Anya makes for a good heroine. She doesn’t allow herself to be a victim of circumstance and takes the initiative in escape. She’s open to learning more about this strange man she’s confined with and understands he’s just as much a slave of circumstances as she is.
And I really like Zan as a hero. He was born into slavery and has accepted his lot in life as a slave, a stud (and I mean the real kind – not a really hot guy) and the fact he could meet his end at any time while fighting in the ring. The reason he doesn’t want to get to know Anya, despite their forced intimacy is his fatalistic view of life. But when she reaches out to him and proposes they all try to escape, he finally has a glimmer of hope in his hopeless life. He doesn’t think they have much of a choice and that the odds are stacked against but finally he’s ready to try. And through this he really becomes a leader of this group.
As you can imagine, this book is pretty darn hot but it really fits the story and it’s not just sex for sex’s sake. This is one I can see me reading again.
*WARNING* contains explicit adult sexual situations Zar was born into captivity, into slavery. Zar feels like the walking dead, he can't afford emotions, he learned to lock them away a very long time ago. Zar has accepted the fights, but he is tired of being forced to breed. Anya went to sleep in her own bed and woke up on a cold floor staring at feet. Anya never believed in aliens, but she does now. This is such a great story. Anya is a strong female lead, not strength wise, but in the sense that she never gives up. The description of Zar was good enough to provide a visual picture. The story started out as a nightmare, but turned into something beautiful. I enjoyed this one alot. I will be reading Shadow's story in book two soon.
The story of Anya, abducted from Earth in the middle of the night. Clad only in moose pyjamas, along with several other girls. All are placed in cells with vicious male alien slaves.
Anya forms a telepathic link with the ships captain’s pet and orchestrates their eventual mutiny.
This is a classic space slave abduction story. I seem to be on a roll with these lately. There’s some slight dub/con. But there is also a sweet romance.
This was quite a simple, light and fluffy tale. I enjoyed it. I loved Zar’s furriness! He was pretty hot for a lion alien. It had a big HEA and I’ll probably read the others.
Buddy read! Total trash but we didn’t have high expectations to begin with. The comments in book club are hilarious and I for one need a book like this every once in a while for a good laugh. And occasional torture for others.
I marked ‘Challenging’ as in challenging to believe anything that is written.
‘Dark’ due to rape. Pretty much every slave character was part of rape.
‘Informative’ as an example to other aspiring authors- do not ever write like this! Awful.
‘Sad’ due to the missed opportunity to write something pretty cool!
Who are the people that rated this highly? Shame. Shame!
"I thought aliens from other planets were the stuff of sci-fi movies and National Enquirerabduction stories." Somos duas, and yet here we are...
Captured from Earth Anya finds that she is to be impregnated by a Galactic Gladiator then sold as a two-for-one slave. This is the story of Anya and her gladiator and how they were saved.
Interesting story told only in the world of the ship they’re on. Future stories are the other gladiators on board finding their mates.
I admire the writer's talent, and I love the protagonists, but damn, 90% of this book is so depressing. Maybe it's just me, and the dark times we're living through, but I was miserable reading this. I need a joyful escape. It does end happily, so at least there's that. Excuse me, but I'm off to find some sunshine somewhere.
I have not read any work from this author before but I really enjoyed this book and will probably continue to read her books. I always enjoy a good alien sci-fi romance. This book was a typical alien romance in regards to the woman being a human abducted from earth and ultimately falling in love with an alien. Now the twist in this book that I haven’t read in others is the fact that the alien she falls in love with is also a slave alongside with her. So they are both slaves who are being forced to breed but as the days pass, they start to open up more to each other and eventually fall in love while planning an uprising to free themselves and their fellow captives. I would have liked to have read an epilogue with the 2 of them a few months down the road where they have a new home and a baby on the way but the author had different ideas.
I didn't start this series at the beginning but I'm happy to find myself at the start of this amazing series, now. Obviously, I can't compare to the original edition of this story but I can say that this anniversary version unfolded at a great pace. The characters were very diverse and in a horrible situation. Zar was closed off from his emotions but time with Anya showed him that he really wasn't living like that. Careful plotting led to their rebellion and love bloomed in a very steamy fashion ;P Expect action and danger to be woven around that romance to keep you on the edge of your seat, throughout. Good fun!
Anja is abducted and next thing she knows she is being shoved in a cell with a alien gladiator and told either you two mate or you die. Well ya get down to business, regardless of you want to or not. However, she isn't one for taking things without pushing back and quickly starts to plan a mutiny and overthrow of the slavers ship. First in the series it sets the stage nicely for the next books...
"Zar" by Alana Khan marks a mesmerizing debut into my world of this author's works. With a narrative that skillfully navigates sensitive subject matters, Khan captivates readers from the very beginning, leaving an indelible mark as a masterful storyteller.
From the opening pages, readers are drawn into the extraordinary journey of Anya, a human kidnapped from Earth and thrust into an alien world. The clever interplay of survival and forced companionship forms the foundation of the story, setting the stage for a unique bond to flourish between Anya and Zar, a gladiator warrior with a lion-like humanoid form.
Khan's ability to address sensitive themes with nuance and grace is commendable. The author's approach showcases the depth of research and empathy, allowing readers to navigate the challenges faced by the characters in a thoughtful and meaningful manner. As the relationship between Anya and Zar evolves, their shared struggles and their growing bond become central to the narrative, making their connection all the more authentic and emotionally resonant.
The world-building in "Zar" is nothing short of impressive. Khan paints a vivid and imaginative alien landscape, immersing readers in a realm that is both foreign and captivating. The integration of inventive details and cultural nuances adds layers to the story, making it an immersive experience that goes beyond the pages.
What sets this novel apart is its unpredictability. The plot takes unexpected twists and turns, keeping readers engaged and invested in the characters' fates. The absence of clichéd angst further enhances the narrative's authenticity, ensuring that every emotion felt by the characters is genuine and relatable.
In conclusion, "Zar" is a remarkable debut that showcases Alana Khan's prowess as a skilled author. The combination of well-constructed characters, intricate world-building, and a genuine exploration of complex themes makes this book a must-read. For those seeking a tale that balances excitement, emotions, and a touch of the otherworldly, "Zar" is a gem that deserves a prime spot on your to-be-read list.
I read a lot of science fiction romance. It's one of my favorite genres. I especially love the books that develop realistic characters who don't all look human. Creating a world and language specific vocabulary, too, causes me to fall into that universe more completely.
Now there are some stories that are bleh fine, but they can't hold my attention for longer than a few chapters before I have to be entertained with a game or such. This was NOT the case with Zar!
I love Anya, the female protagonist. Sure is shocked and overwhelmed by her new slave status, but she adjusts and works at not falling apart. I think all of us women would like to hope to believe that we'd also get on with the business of living one day at a time. So she finds a way to connect with Zar, her cage mate. Their coexistence allows them to grow close enough to plot and trust. But their ideas wouldn't have worked without the other minor characters. That's what I really liked, except, ya know, for the fabulously, richly written sex scenes. "Steamy" doesn't even cover it! Whew, is it hot in here, or what! Someone bring me a cold, frothy mug of beer!
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE a well written sex scene, but, come on romance writers, there has to be a fascinating storyline behind it; and vice-verse, story without even sexual tension is more bleh. The story of Zar and Anya provide it ALL!
I couldn't put it down, not even to go steal the computer away from my son. I was/am enthralled with the universe Alana is creating. I really want to know what Tyree's story will be, but Shadow is up next, and Alana assures us that he won't continue to be a wanker, ass-hat. Tyree is coming though, and I've already purchased Shadow and gotten his free prequel by signing up for Alana's newsletter. Yes, I really do want to get more news from THIS author. Anywho, the others are on my KU wait/want list for future KU buys. Thanks Alana for writing a book that totally engaged ALL the points I'm looking for in a fantastic read!
Revisiting this series after stopping two books in a few months ago. I really liked the first one but then Book 2 was kind of meh (extra disappointing bc I was really looking forward to the ‘bad boy cyborg with anger issues who needs to learn how to be vulnerable and accept love’ and I remember it just falling kind of flat?). Book 3 was also just ok for me; but 4-6 were great and there have been a lot of other solid entries after that (I just finished #13, which might be one of my favorites of the series). I re-(speed)read Zar and still love this lion man. He ends up being my favorite recurring character in the following books, with my two favorite running gags/quirks being
Overall I’d recommend this series if you’re looking for some alien gladiators traveling through space and falling in love with their mates. There’s a good variety of settings and plots: spaceships, mansions, planets with varying levels of civilization and technology, survival, rebellion, escapes, rescues, natural disasters, renaissance fairs, and all kinds of different mating rituals and cultures. Most of the books have made me both laugh and cry at various points (I love a good book cry!), and there’s a lot of good steam, too!
I wanted to read some trash, saw this on KU (got 3 free months, why not).
There's a difference between wanting to read some real trash romance and reading some real shit. This, was shit. I didn't even try to finish.
Day 1: Woman is kidnapped by aliens. Day 2: Woman and lion dude are forced to fuck. Woman meets small alien, can mind read speak telepathically. She just so happens to be captain's pet. Day 3: Woman upset lion man doesn't seem to enjoy forced copulation. Small alien and woman plan rebellion. Day 4: Woman and lion man fuck, for really reals. Woman ropes lion man (born slave) into escape plot.
I just can't with this. Like her second day she's felling jelly belly that the dude that is forced to have sex with her finishes as quickly as possible. And she just so happens to be the only one the captain's pet alien has ever been able to speak telepathically so. *EYE ROLL*
