Two-time Reader's Favorite Five Star Read (Bronze Medal Finalist)
I only bought this collection for Ashley Mcleos short and it was magically awesome, I then went on to read all the other shorts and I have to say they all left me wanting more.
I wasn't aware when I started reading this that it was samples of longer books. If I had been, I wouldn't have started reading it. The samples themselves were great, but I like to read a full book, or complete short stories. The first three stories in this book were samples only that didn't stand alone. Very disappointing so I stopped at that point. I wish it had been made more clear that instead of true stand alone short stories, these were basically chapters from a longer story but definitely not stand alone.
My review is for A Demon Born’s First Love by Ashley McLeo.
A Demon Born’s First Love is about a girl, Iola, and her classmates. All of Iola’s classmates are afraid of her because she is a demon-born witch. Iola never wanted to go to the witch’s academy but she didn’t want to disappoint her mother.
Because Iola was different from her classmates they picked on her all the time by playing pranks on her. They laughed at her, called her names, made fun of her.
A new boy, Leo arrives at the academy, and Iola’s worst enemy, Melissa likes him and becomes very jealous when she sees Iola and Leo together. Melissa wants to hurt Iola and let her know all at the same time that Leo belongs to her. Melissa plays a very bad prank on Leo which in turn hurts Iola.
Can Iola forgive Leo for what he has done? But the real question is, has Leo done any wrong? Is Leo to blame for what Melissa did? To find the answers to all these questions you will have to read Iola’s story in A Demon Born’s First Love which is a part of the Magic Academy: Year One’s magical collection of love stories.
A Demon Born’s First Love is a magical tale about hurt, hate, love, and magic. I think everyone could learn a few things from Leo. Leo knows that you have to get to know someone before forming opinions of them. Because what is on the inside is not always what is on the outside. It’s like the saying you can’t judge a book by its cover.
I'm making a list of the stories I've read out of this collection, and giving notes on some of them. It should be noted that this is not a short story collection as described, as many of these are excerpts from novels. Hence my low rating. In addition, a lot of these stories feel like I'm reading the same thing over and over. I picked up this collection because of JA Armitage and I liked her story, but not the rest.
1. The Hidden Forest by Megan Linski and Alicia Rades Makes a good short story. Interesting main characters.
2. Dragonslayer Class by AJ Flowers
3. A new Heritage by Angel Leya
4. A Demon Born's First Love by Ashley McLeo Not a fan of how this handled love potions. The boy gets coerced into kissing a girl because she slips him a love potion. This girl is the enemy of main character. Then, MC gets mad at the BOY, and he apologizes to her. Not cool.
5. Imdalind Academy by Rebecca Ethington
6. Night Bloom Academy by Anna Santos
7. Reaper: The Academy by Jen L. Grey
8. The Golden Dragon by JA Culican I thought this would be a short story, but it was just the first five chapters of her book, which was disappointing.
1.The Hidden Forest - Megan Linski and Alicia Rades 2.Dragonslayer Class 101: A Dragonslayer Academy Story - AJ Flowers 3.A New Heritage - Angel Leya 4.A Demon Born’s First Love - Ashley McLeo 5.Imdalind Academy - Rebecca Ethington 6.Night Bloom Academy - Anna Santos 7.Reaper - The Academy - Jen L. Grey 8.The Golden Dragon - JA Culican 9.Izzy’s Insight - Nicole Zoltack 10.Her Majesty’s Secret Fugitive - Jackie Owlett 11.Merry Chris Witch - CK Dawn
Most of these feel like sample chapters rather then short stories. They are not bad but not what I expected.
|I picked this up on the 'zon last year, and only now have started to read it.
While it appears to be a short story collection, and much of it is, this book also offers a glimpse into a variety of talented authors' academy worlds through excerpts from longer works.
It's a nicely varied set of lead ins and glimpses of these different worlds. It's suited to a wide range of readers and I found it enjoyable.
Oddly enough, it's not listed on the 'zon anymore so I could not share a review there as well.
There wasn't anything wrong with most of the short stories & some were intriguing enough to make me click the link to get the follow up book!! That's where my issue was with this box set, except for a couple of the stories, NONE of the books are available, not even for pre-order😳😟 I'll never remember the names of them so I found it really frustrating!!👎
Such a shame because there were some very interesting reads included 🌟
While reading this, I felt weird. I can't describe it but m,y feel was weird. I also found it slow and could hold me to read it straight through. (which I do with a lot of books) Read at your own peril.
This truly was a good buy! There were so many new authors that I hadn't read before and each of them had their own twist of a magical theme! Great book exposing new characters and new adventures.
An anthology of short stories and snippets from stories. Stories are well written and some of the stories I will be on the lookout for. All in all, good book worth the read.
Great intro to authors you may not know. I love magic school reads and this gave a small taste of stories from several writers which wet the appetite for more. Really enjoyed this book.
fantastic collection that I impulse bought but wow it was a bargain, Plenty of very entertaining stories here and those authors aren't too shabby either, let me tell you!
A great collection of stories about magic and the adventures of the people who are learning magic. These stories introduce you to several authors you may not know.
Would have been better if more of the stories had been complete. There is also several editing and quality issues. Overall, a good introduction to many different stories but not exactly a good anthology. Hopefully they continue to produce content and further refine their objectives.
What a fun collection of short stories that introduce you to magical and fantastical schools--which are anything but boring. From Tinker Bell to dragons as teachers, witch's spells to vampire ambitions to magical creatures, these stories are the perfect extra-curricular assignment.
Obviously, as a fellow author of the anthology, I like my own story, but I've picked a list of favorites from the other authors (in which I had no hand :). In no particular order:
--A Demon Born’s First Love --Imdalind Academy --Izzy’s Insight --Dragonslayer Class 101: A Dragonslayer Academy Story
I've got short descriptions of each story below, including my own, for those that are curious. This is a fun collection if you like short stories, and a few will probably leave you wanting more. And you can't beat the price. ;)
The Hidden Forest by Megan Linski and Alicia Rades - Imogen finds a wall in the forest that she can't get around--and it's rendering her magic useless, too. What's on the other side?
Dragonslayer Class 101: A Dragonslayer Academy Story by A.J. Flowers - A dragon slayer has to go back to school to prep for his latest assignment. But when his shard of Excalibur is awakened by a nosy teacher, it transports him into a new assignment, one that will test his resolve.
A Demon Born’s First Love by Ashley McLeo - Being a demon-born witch comes with plenty of stigma, which is why Iola would rather NOT go to summer classes at the witch's school. Still, she wants to make her mom proud, and her best friend did say she saw Iola meeting a new guy...
Imdalind Academy by Rebecca Ethington - Sia is determined to not only enter the gauntlet, but win, earn the kiss of the eternal, secure her magical heritage, and attend Imdalind Academy. Too bad there are so many Drains competing this year...
Night Bloom Academy by Anna Santos - A human must keep up with the challenges of her otherworldly classmates if she's to prove she can handle the challenges of her role to the princess.
Reaper: The Academy by Jen L. Grey - Christina has a strange encounter with a dying kitten, and gets a close-up with the council she so distrusts.
The Golden Dragon by J.A. Culican - Finding out you're part dragon is one thing. Finding out you're completely unique to the dragon world opens up a whole new set of questions.
Izzy’s Insight by Nicole Zoltack - Izzy's first day of witch school doesn't go quite as expected, but her natural curiosity and determination to learn may just get her into more trouble than she realized.
Her Majesty’s Secret Fugitive by Jackie Owlett - Fire has always followed Sierra, an arsonist bent on destroying her at every turn. Not even becoming a drifter can keep her safe, but when she's accused of being the arsonist, Sierra's world becomes a lot more dangerous.
Merry Chris Witch by C.K. Dawn - Chris is under magic probation for using magic underage in the human world. Which means he's going to the public supernatural school, separated from his friends his old witch school. And now it's nearly Christmas, which is Chris's least favorite time of year. At least, until he meets this new girl...
A New Heritage by Angel Leya - Adam is so ready for his fangs, but when daddy tells him he'll have to go to vampire school instead, Adam is determined to forge his own way and earn his fangs without his father's help.
Actually enjoyed this collection and looking for the second set! This collection gives you a sneak peek into each Authors academy ( or academy like) series! Some were more in depth than others, but each gave you a feel for everyone’s writing style as well as the direction each series focuses on. Easily read in a day, I believe this is great exposure for each series! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
This set of short stories/ lead ins to these author’s works is nicely varied. Suited to younger as well as older teens, there is a good selection for the targeted age groups.
This book is full of previews of books, the first few chapters of each book pulls you into their worlds. I wanted to buy every book!!! If you are curious about different genre to read, this will help you to decide.
