He’ll do anything to find his brother's killer….

His final opportunity…

On an unsanctioned mission, Scottish NCA officer Hamish Ballard tracks his brother's killer across the ocean…until he hits a dead end at Adams-Larsen Inc and Associates, a supposed PR company. Owner Jillian Larsen knows more than she admits, and he'll do anything to uncover her secrets, even fake an interest her. He’s got one week to complete his goal. But his attraction is all too real and using her when she was just a name in a report was easy, but now he's falling hard for his foe.

Her first responsibility…

Jillian Larsen's purpose in life is helping people who are in jeopardy disappear and she has never betrayed a client. When a Scottish hottie accuses her company of hiding a criminal, she has no intention of revealing her client’s whereabouts or giving in to her inconvenient attraction for the sexy pain in her ass. But what does she do if the woman she relocated turns out to be a criminal? When her business partner vanishes along with their complicit client, can she use Hamish to track them down without risking her heart?

Their only chance…

He needs her resources. She needs his intelligence. Working together is the only logical choice, but it means jeopardizing everything.

This is a 50,000 word enemies to lovers romantic suspense. The third book in the ALIAS series featuring a badass heroine and a swoony Scottish hero.

USA Today Bestselling Author Lisa Hughey started writing romance in the fourth grade. That particular story involved a prince and an engagement. Now, she writes about strong heroines who are perfectly capable of rescuing themselves and the heroes who love both their strength and their vulnerability. She pens romances of all types—suspense, paranormal, and contemporary—but at their heart, all her books celebrate the power of love.

She lives in Cape Ann Massachusetts with her fabulously supportive husband, two out of three awesome mostly-grown kids, and one somewhat grumpy cat.

I’d like to start out by saying what I liked about this book. Jillian Larsen, the heroine, is a business owner. She’s not just a business owner, she’s a business owner who made a conscious choice to choose the right thing over the proper thing, suffered for it, and is carrying on without a lot of fuss or self-pity.

Not a lot of self-pity. More on that later.

The hero, Hamish, has an interesting backstory. It turns out he’s the twin brother of a celebrity. Said celebrity was only a celebrity if you’re into rugby, which doesn’t come up often since the entire novel takes place in the US, but it does come up. It comes up once, but it does come up. His brother’s death occupies almost all of Hamish’s thoughts, but his brother’s life in no way overshadows him.

The villain of the piece – without giving away spoilers – is a woman, which isn’t something I see a lot of in romantic suspense. Granted, in the real world, the kind of person who commits the kind of crime that gets turned into a romantic suspense novel is usually a man. (Not all men, yes, I know. Moving on.) Still, it’s refreshing to see the acknowledgement that we’re just as capable of violence and evil as the men are.

The writing is excellent. It was easy for me to visualize every setting, every scene. There are some fun moments, which are absolutely necessary to break up the seriousness of the story.

I did have some issues with the book. I think some of my issues are less specifically with Vanished, because they come up over and over again when I read m/f romance.

First, Hamish (the hero) is always right. He is right about the main villain; he is right not to trust the other villain. He is right about Jillian’s colleague and he is right about whether or not they should sleep together. And if Hamish is right, Jillian must be wrong. Jillian must be wrong about the main villain’s virtue. She must be wrong about her boss, because Hamish must always be right.

This isn’t the case with all romance novels, but it’s a standard I see in a lot of heterosexual-centered entertainment and every time I see it it’s like nails on a chalkboard. In every conflict, it is the woman who must give way and when the plot calls for someone to be wrong, it must be the woman. Seriously, even shows like House Hunters do it. I was sitting there reading this last night, and the author probably isn’t any better or any worse than anyone else about it, but I was still hitting my head against the wall.

Every conflict, every “twist,” was predictable. If there was a difference of opinion, if there were two ways something could go, Hamish would be right, and it would be Jillian who would have to re-evaluate, be cut down to size.

Which brings me down to my next issue. Hamish describes himself as deeply driven, and he is in fact deeply driven. He’s got a powerful motive to do what he does.

That said, if someone bugged my office, planted a tracking device on me, followed me everywhere despite my having clearly told him not to, interfered with my livelihood, and constantly tried to assert his dominance over me, I certainly would not sleep with him. If I had Jillian’s experience with making people disappear, I would probably murder him. Sex would not be on the table, unless it was a means to overpower him.

But Jillian, despite having the strength to do the right thing in the face of overwhelming pressure and having a long career in law enforcement, doesn’t want to be tough. She wants to be soft and nurturing, because… reasons, I guess. And then suddenly it makes perfect sense to sleep with the guy she knows bugged her office.

Again, banging my head against the wall here.

I felt bad for Hamish with regards to his brother’s death. That said, the guy has a serious problem being told no, especially when women are the ones doing it. I’m not saying he’s a rapist – he’s very careful to get Jillian’s consent when they’re being sexual.

He overrides her in literally everything else, but at least he’s a decent man in that.

His boss is a woman. She tells him to drop his obsession with finding the person he blames for his brother’s death. He decides he doesn’t have to listen to her and traipses on off to America. Jillian – a woman – tells him she’s not going to work with him, but he decides he’s just going to override her and follows her around until she gives in.

Some people call this persistent. I call it creepy, obnoxious, and deeply in need of a good boot to the head. Possibly several. But the narrative in this book is that Hamish always knows what’s best, so I’m just going to be glad he’s not part of my life and move on from there.

Some people are absolutely going to love this story. We’ve got a lonely, type-A heroine who gets fulfillment from her relationship with a man many will view as “alpha.” The characters didn’t’ work for me personally, but I still got a lot out of the suspense aspects and had a lot of fun with the premise.

This is a story that I have been waiting quite a while for. Jillian always fascinated me and hearing her background was rather sad and very lonely. It makes you understand why she had trouble making connections. Hammish was the perfect match for her. This story did keep you guessing. It had intrigue, suspense, and action at the end. My only complaint about the story is that certain themes were too repetitious, especially for the first half of the book. For example, how many times do we have to be reminded that Marsh is missing; or how many times do we need to be reminded of your guilt because you felt you weren’t there for your brother; and the list goes on. It made the story a bit annoying after a while. However the story did end well. 3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed this well written, stand-alone story. The characters are great. The enemies to lovers angle was nicely developed. I, along with the female character, Jillian, did not initially like the main male character, Officer Ballard, though, the reader and Jillian eventually warm up to Officer Ballard and find he can actually be quite helpful. The suspense keeps you turning the pages. HEA. Recommend! Definitely reading more by this author.

This is the first book that I have read by this author but definitely not the last. There is danger, romance, intrigue, mystery and twist and turns that you don't see coming. The characters were so suited and real that you feel like you are living through everything with them. I definitely recommend you read this book as it is so well written and worth reading.

Vanished is a good read. I like the characters and the dynamic between them. It's always fun to read about a hate to love romance. The characters are likeable, engaging and intelligent. The story is a solid suspense ride that's got drama, surprises and heart. I enjoyed this book overall and recommend for anyone interested in enemies to lovers.

A very enjoyable read. The story moved steadily with interesting characters and a good background mystery, with an excellent balance between mystery and romance.
Having read the previous books in the series, I enjoyed learning who was the real character behind Jillian’s icy facade as the partner of the firm and observing the change in relationship from enemies to lovers with the tormented ‘Scottish Hottie’.
I was also pleased to finally find out what had happened to Marsh.

This is the first book that I have read by this author but, it definitely won't be the last. This was a great, fast paced romantic suspense. It had a great plot but, the storyline was character driven. Hamish and Jill were endearing and realistic characters. I also loved many of the quirky and endearing secondary characters. I would love to read Jake's story.I would love to read the next book in this intriguing series and I would definitely recommend it.

Excellent, very well written romantic suspense. It has the perfect balance of intensity, action-adventure, mystery and steamy romance. This plot is so gripping, that I couldn’t put this down. Great characters, I really like the development of some trust in one another to build on their instant attraction. Both are independent and intellectual in their individual fields so he needs her just as much as she needs him. Really enjoyed their interactions and their very interesting story. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.

This is a romance wrapped in a mystery. Deception, and murder are on the table. So where is the bad guy? This story starts in Scotland, but the romance is all in the USA. Really who could turn down a "hot scott"!?

This story has it all. Humour, action, and sparks and steam. I really enjoyed this story from start to finish.

If you are looking of a cliched trope of a read, this is not the novel for you. If you are however looking for an exciting female protagnist, matching wits with a devious female antagonist, by all means pull the chair up, grab your beverage of choice and dig in, because this novel is one hell of a ride. I enjoyed almost everything about this novel, pity I didn't have the luxury of reading the previous novels in this series, (to be amended stat). I'm not giving away any spoilers, this is an action, romance adventure from the very first hook.

I think I enjoyed this book most out of the series so far. I found myself imagining Hamish's Scottish accent when he spoke while picturing Gerald Butler.
The story can be read as a standalone but follows on from the previous book where Jillian's partner Marsh is MIA. The disapperance of Marsh intercepts with the case of Hamish's murdered brother and the suspect he has tracked to the States. In protecting her partner, Jillian and Hamish start off as enemies but soon realise they can help each other. This book has all the incredients for a good Romantic Suspense... mystery, drama and chemistry between the lead characters. I look forward to the next book in the series where it looks like Marsh may get his out story.

For me worth 3.5 stars

It took me a while to get into the story. The run-up to the investigation into the disappeared Brianne took its time when it was already clear that the two main characters were attracted to each other. Once in the story the tension rises quickly, the story held me. Sometimes you saw developments coming, but I thought the effect was nicely structured.
I loved Jill's character. A woman who stands up for herself and is not guided by other emotions than sometimes her own insecurities that she tries to hide. A woman who is loyal to the people around her.

Hamish goes to the USA to find the woman he holds responsible for the death of his brother. He works for the Scottish police department but they tell him he if he continues to pursue this he will loose his job. So he takes a holiday to the U.S. When he contacts the company where is the last place he has any information on her. He`s told they don`t know who he is talking about and to leave. He is convinced that the Owner he spoke to is lying. Jillian knows she can give no information out because they are the ones who gave her the new identity. But things do not always appear as they really are and people lie. This is a great story. I really enjoyed reading and found it hard to stop until I reached the end.

I think this book is the best of the series.Romance, mystery, danger and resolution of the question of where is Marsh.? Love finds Jillian, with the Scottish detective.
Looks like Marsh is going to get his out story from the teaser at the end.

Our heroine owns a business which makes people in need of protection disappear. Our hero is tracking his brother's killer. They collide when the killer might be one of her clients.

This is book three in the series and it works fine on its own. There is a continuing thread from the previous books, but nothing that got in the way of this story.

This is a romantic suspense story, through and through. The intrigue and action, to my mind, drive the story, with the romance coming in second, which works just fine for me. The plot also has several twists and turns which keep things interesting. Our characters are well developed and, in general, I like them a lot. I did feel that our tough and resourceful heroine gave into the hero a little too easily and our hero is a bit too obsessive, but otherwise felt they were a good pairing. Overall, the story was very enjoyable and kept me interested all the way to the end.

Recommended.

Hamish Ballard will do what he must to seek justice for his beloved twin. Tracking the person he holds responsible to the U.S. he encounters Jillian who well may be able to aid in the apprehension of the criminal who has wrought such devastation. Jillian has built a formidable business, helping people who need to disappear. Hamish wants her to help him, but gives little reason for her to trust him. An uneasy arrangement finds the two working together, as they remain guarded. Despite the mystery and danger surrounding them they grow closer. The story has drama, emotions and an attraction neither Jillian or Hamish anticipated. I enjoyed the book though there weren't any big surprises, which I would have liked.

The initial premise of this doesn’t make sense. If a woman was able to create such a flawless identity that set off no red flags with their super high-tech checking system, why did she need to use this ALIAS company to create a new identity and hide her away or whatever? And how was Officer Hamish able to discover the identity she used when she applied to this company to make her disappear/relocate, yet this company weren’t able to discover the real identity of this woman? This stupid opening made the plot entirely predictable, not that I cared to waste my time to find out.

Dull, repetitive, cringey. DNF!
