JT Lawrence's short story collections always deliver the goods.
Each one features compelling characters involved in engaging plots while addressing social issues with nuance, often capturing vastly different genres and themes, and I simply can't move on from a story without finishing it.
After reading enough of Lawrence's short story collections, I always anticipate some shocking twist ending, yet somehow I'm still surprised every time.
My favourite thing about Lawrence's stories is the writing. Every word feels precise and selected to best serve the story.
Each collection is better than the one before and this one was no exception.
Almost done with the series and this is the first book I enjoyed all but one story. And even then I'm not picking. I think my favorite was the last 2 of the book. Getting curious if the author will release a book 7? And I've realized I've learned quite a bit of just little things but things I wouldn't have ever known about South Africa and terminology used there. I've been enjoying learning a little here and there about somewhere new.
I don't know why I'm still surprised that Janita can write about basically any subject and I would love it. The stories are once again truly remarkable and each one kept me engrossed and not wanting to stop. My favourites are Little Sparrow, Sisters and In the Hands of God.
The other collection of short stories I listened to by this author was better then this one. These were not as spooky and unsettling as described! Still a fun thing to listen to while you work!
I enjoyed this collection very much. Each story opened a door to a new life, perspective, age, gender, genre and view of the world. For all the darkness that's contained in these 12 pieces, there is merriment, mystery and intrigue, but more than any of this there are truly relatable humans - and remarkably interesting robots - that kept me hooked and coming back to listen to more all day. Just as skilled as JT Lawrence is at writing books, so Roshina Ratnam is equally adept at narrating them and this material, with its abundant variety of characters, contexts and genres is nothing she can't tackle - and tackle well. Roshina is well-suited to JT's books, and I look forward to hearing from her. It's a solid 5 from me!
