FIRST IN A NEW SERIES!Charlie Stark, assistant undertaker, is standing in a grave the day notorious outlaw Angel Blunt rides into his life. Blunt talks to Mr. Henson, Charlie’s mentor, like he knows him, but Charlie knows that can’t be. John Peter Henson is a good man who would only spend time with someone like Blunt the day he put him into the ground. When Mr. Henson doesn’t answer Blunt’s questions even after being tortured, the outlaw leader shoots the undertaker and shoots Charlie, killing the old man and leaving Charlie to die. After being pulled from the grave by Deputy Maggie Buchanan, Charlie tries to find out more about Mr. Henson now that he knows Mr. Henson hadn’t always been Mr. Henson.Angel Blunt has left men in Pecos, Texas, who follow Charlie around, men who are ready to finish the job Blunt thought he’d finished.Unwilling to give up Mr. Henson’s secret and tarnish his good name, Charlie tries to put the pieces together himself. Maggie Buchanan knows he’s hiding something and she’s on his trail as well. Together, they turn the tables on Blunt’s outlaws. Charlie ends up in possession of a treasure map to Mexican gold that may just get him killed. That map is the only thing that gives him a chance at settling the score with Angel Blunt, something he intends to do.
Titles can be deceiving, while the story is about a young man who had worked as as assistant to an undertaker, it is a well written and ingteresting story. The main characters are Charlie(ex-undertaker) and Maggie(ex-sheriffs deputy) team up to go into Mexico to hopefully recover stolen gold. This is a good story that is well written and full of action. Guess I am an old romanic, but it would have been better if Charlie connected with Maggie on a romanic level. Would anticipate that there will be followup books on these two in the furure.
Looking forward to reading about Stark and Buchanan and their Bail Bond enterprise that they've set up in the town of Pecos. After reading this adventure you know you won't be disappointed. Lots of western actions, but you feel the United States is moving progress, the east and the west connecting with the arrival of the railroad, making it easier to get to other towns, cities.
A CJ. Stark &Buchanan (1) Westetn/An Undertaker/A Gunman/Revenge
CJ. has. penned a Stark And Buchanan western novel. The primary character in the storyline is an undertaker who for some reason has become a target to an aging gunfighter. The undertaker had been shot, dumped into a grave and left for dead. He survived and attempts to get away because he had no idea what he has done to have a gun fighter after him. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Young Carlie Stark was taken in by the local undertaker, Mr. Henson, till the day he was killed!
Charlie Stark was standing in a grave that he and Mr. Henson were preparing for later in the day when they heard hoofbeats. Mr. Henson looked up and told Charlie that trouble was on its way. Of course, Charlie did not know who the men were on that fateful day, but as he laid there in the grave with Mr. Henson laying on top of him, he knew he would never forget the name, Angel Blunt. He also did not know what he would do now, and he passed out.
After the sheriff’s daughter, Maggie pulled him out of the grave, the doctor patched him enough to stand when he found out that Mr. Henson’s place had been burned down. Standing there looking at what had been his home, he decided that he was not leaving, and the story begins.
Join Charlie as he becomes friends with Maggie, and she changes his whole life…
What did I like? Wow, what an emotional ride from falling in a grave after being shot, losing your mentor, and becoming friends with the only person that he never figured had ever given him a second thought.

One of the Best Westerns Ever! While most westerns pretty much follow one of the traditional themes (good guys conquer bad guys, area bullies subdued by hero, etc.), Mel Odom sets a new benchmark of full-blown characters and scenes with a variety of entertaining directions that come together! This is possibly the most enjoyable westerns this reader has ever read!
OK. You have me hooked, and then you go and leave me hanging. Does he ever wise up enough to ask her to marry him? I read western a lot, but I have never been enthralled with a character like l was Buchanan and then you have no follow up!!
It's rare that an author can write about wounded souls without it being too depressing to read. Mel Odom excels at his art. I'm hoping the series is long and he writes quickly.
I've never read about a woman like this but with what I have experienced I can see it happening. People change, some good and some bad. There is sometimes a fine line between justice, revenge, and the law. Recommended for adult readers who like bloody action, mystery, treasure, and deep friendships.
From the very beginning, this story was very riveting. There are several Sun plots. There are also wicked me. It was all about gold. The good guys managed to catch the murderers. Well done.
A riveting story of extremely flawed people that found a way to help each other as others guided them in their journey. Look forward to the next episode.
