Shem is part of a ragtag band of resistance fighters and criminals who goes on an uncover mission to steal vital information from a high-ranking official of a totalitarian government. The mission naturally goes awry and places Shem in dire straits.

Cass Kim does a good job of creating a fully-formed character with Shem. His simmering rage over the fate of his family and a drive to get answers to questions related to that incident drive him and make him a relatable character.

Kim does a nice job of world building. She offers a glimpse to a broader story that leaves you curious to know more.

I'm not crazy about the abrupt cliffhanger ending, which is why I docked it a star. It made the story feel incomplete. It does not really function well as a standalone work because so many plot threads are left dangling in the name of manufacturing a series instead of writing a complete story.

The Promising Beginning of a new Space Opera!

I like this author's prose and knack for creating nuanced and deep characters. This book sets up a story of a band of resistance fighters (The title of the book) as they rebel against a Draconian government in the far future.

Not to give away too much - the protagonist Shem is sent on a secret-infiltration mission to obtain data from a high-ranking official. But, he has a backstory and his own reasons for rebelling against the authorities.

The book is an exceedingly quick read with lively prose and a nice background. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series.

I'd never read a space opera before, and I wasn't even sure I knew what it was until I started reading The Rallyist Cycle: Shem Series: Part One. Once I did, I felt like I had come back to something familiar, and yet all new!

The Rallyist Cycle: Shem Series: Part One introduces us to a dystopian universe and a new rag tag group of revolutionaries. The story slowly reveals details of the universe, which is something I truly love; I can't stand a story that front loads to much information. The pace always runs at a good clip, too, so you won't have a chance to be bored, and the characters are also just interesting enough and just flawed enough for me to want to know more.

The only drawback is having to wait for more of the story. After doing a little digging into this author's background, it seems like Cass Kim can keep delivering more volumes pretty quickly and I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment.
