Killer 'cane: The Deadly Hurricane of 1928: Or, Hell Hath No Fury Like A Hurricane from Mama Nature
When I was assigned the deadly natural disaster of the Okeechobee Hurricane for a podcast assignment for Parcast, I knew the only way to really understand what happened on September 16th, 1928 was to read about it in a book. And this WAS THAT BOOK.
Robert Mykle manages to bring it all: the facts, the human drama, the real, true stories. It was everything. I felt intimately connected to the survivors. I felt thrilled and afraid and nervous. He manages to cover the storm from its beginnings all the way to its deadly end and it was fascinating and riveting and touching. These people were NOT ready for what they faced and everything that happened can now be explained.
Just like the area of Florida where this hurricane hit, I will forever be affected by what I read and the real, human stories of people trying to stay together, of people who lost everything, and of people who fought against all odds to survive. This book inspired me so much, that I began looking further into this disaster and other disasters to see what happens when Mother Nature brings her wrath against humanity. Riveting and tragic all in one! Mother Nature waits for no one.
