The conclusion of the two-part murder-mystery in which Kindaichi must crack the case on the run as the trail of clues lead police to one suspect, Kindaichi.
Definitely not as good a conclusion compared to the beginning sections, this is a decent story but not a series high point. Hang tight while I get a bee in my bonnet about how it was released again and then it’s back to the usual stuff.
Seriously though, just switching to a second book to read this part of the case ends up feeling like the energy is being sucked out of the room from the get-go. I hate it when Case Closed ends a volume partway through a mystery and it’s equally as bad here, wrecking the narrative flow.
On the plus side, one thing I do really like about this particular story is how hard it leans into its setting. This wouldn’t have been a point in its favour when originally published, but filtered through 2020’s eyes I have such affectionate nostalgia for a simpler time.
An adorable floppy disk is the story’s MacGuffin, along with appearances from a case for a video cassette (ask your parents, kids) as well as a pager (ask them again, then stop bugging them and go outside). A pager!
I will say that, retro value aside, the pager’s involvement in this volume is a hell of a stretch though, and makes Superintendent Akechi look less like a genius and more like a borderline psychic.
The actual solution is a little wonky and predicated on the killer having the world’s softest shoes to avoid leaving any traces of their presence when they enact their plan (the physics are fine, but no way do those shoes not scratch or leave marks). On the other hand, I do think this one, more than some other Kindaichi instalments, does give you the clues to solve the case relatively fairly.
I guess it’s kind of fitting for an inelegantly packaged mystery to have an inelegant solution. Not my favorite, but the chase parts make up for the ho-hum nature of the murders.
2019 reread: Upon finishing this case, I thought the pace was too fast. And considering I already know who the killer is from the very start, it took away the enjoyment of the mystery. This case was particularly memorable because of the escape trick the killer use to vanish from the library. Took down my rating to 4 stars.
