Kindaichi does The Fugitive, which makes for an entertaining change of pace, even if the follow-up murders to the first one are somewhat, um, less than subtle. This is a story of pursuit first and a murder mystery second and while it’s a decent shake-up of the formula, it’s not the series at its finest.

An incredible bastard gets killed (this series has a lot of those character types) and Kindaichi happens to have apparently been on the scene when he died and all clues point to him. Cat and mouse games follow, which become particularly fun once noted smug aficionado Superintendent Akechi gets involved.

We also get the introduction of the little brother of Kindaichi’s murdered classmate, who is basically a carbon copy of him. For somebody who died in a vicious attack, they sure do mine a lot of ridiculous comedy out of that death.

3.5 stars - this is out to entertain and it does it well. I rounded it down because of the boneheaded decision to split this into two separate books by Tokyopop. Buying half a mystery is a ludicrous ask of anybody, but it’s pretty much par for the course when you consider how they treated the series in general when it was being published.

Final aside, Kenmochi’s line after somebody is offed with a golf club is about one step and a Who song removed from being the opening to an episode of CSI: Miami. Yeah.

It is rather annoying to see Kindaichi get chased around by the police . To be honest it was kind of boring to see the cycle of people get killed . Usually all the deaths are unique and the killing methods are simple which is why I loved the Kindaichi series . In this book however , even though it seems like multiple murder happened , It was only focused on one , and that makes me disappointed .

2019 reread: Kindaichi's naughty behavior this time brings trouble as he was accused as the suspect of a killing in a hunt to get printing copyrights for a famous author's new book. The case is rather fast pace and the timing between the killing is too short as if it's happened in span of 2-3 days. Still, the little too detailed information are just impossible to get if this case was real.

A good book, but the fact that it's needlessly split over two volumes knocks a half-star off.

The subtitle for this volume ought to be "Despite his 180 IQ, Kindaichi does everything possible to make himself look like a serial killer, it's honestly pretty sad."
