Kudos to Eleanor Swanson. In this suspenseful family tragedy, she renders in affecting detail the existential mesh of human interaction in which our intention to protect others unleashes the anguish we sought to avoid. This is a skillfully and poetically rendered story of love and its reverberating loss, and of loyalty, sheer endurance, and of healing. Swanson is an adroit raconteur of the human heart.

This was riveting! Swanson tells the powerful story of one family's quest to find truth, meaning, and a way to go on living
in the wake of the father's murder trial. Although Noel Colgrove is acquitted of murder, there are too many mysteries surrounding the incident, and each family member deals with the unknown in different ways. I couldn't put it down until I reached the end when the final truth was revealed. I am looking forward to reading Swanson's newest book of short stories: Little Houses.

I loved the scene descriptions and plot twists in this book. The twists kept me guessing and I wasn't expecting the book to end the way it did. I found myself rooting for and being able to identify with the characters, who are very well developed, conflicted, flawed and human. I found the book very hard to put down once I started reading it.
