Janiyah Henderson may be an adult, but her dad doesn’t see it that way. Granted, she’s enjoying her post-college life of little-to-no responsibility, but when her dad announces at a family meeting that she can’t handle working a “real job”, there’s only one thing to land a desk job and prove him wrong. When her brother’s best friend, Fredrick Jenkins, needs a new assistant, she knows she’s the perfect candidate. So what if she’s had a crush on the conservative accountant since she was nine? She’s the last woman Freddy would fall for. But Fredrick is far from impervious to Janiyah’s charms. Though he can’t help but be attracted to her, he knows Janiyah is more interested in eating his cereal and teasing him than viewing him as more than the good guy next door. When he offers her the job, he can’t imagine her giving up her late mornings and colorful outfits for 8:00 a.m. meetings and pantyhose for too long. But as Janiyah excels as his employee, he fears he’s in danger of falling hard for a woman he shouldn’t care for. Pretty soon the attraction they’ve tried to ignore boils to the surface. And after Fredrick shows Janiyah the man behind the numbers, she’s ready to show him that she’s just the type of woman he needs.
Wow, I’m just blown away by how much I enjoyed this story. It was a great opposites attract story. Janiyah has had a crush on her brother’s best friend, Frederick (or as she calls him, Freddy), for the longest. When she was 17, she tried to give him her virginity, which ended disastrously. Since then, they made a nonverbal pact never to speak of the situation again.
Freddy is an atypical hero. He’s 5 feet 10 (yes, a normal-sized hero) and a “boring” accountant, but there’s nothing boring about this man, and definitely not in the bedroom.
Williams did an excellent job with the characterizations of the hero and heroine. I had a very clear picture of who they were—not only physically, but personality-wise. As I read it, I believed in their platonic friendship, but their internal musings are where you get to see their true feelings for each other. Janiyah was free-spirited, quirky, a moocher, and downright hilarious. Freddy was serious, logical, and careful about his future. They obviously balanced each other out.
There was humor and lots of smoldering chemistry. When they finally hooked up, the love scenes were hot but tasteful.
Freddy absolutely infuriated me. I can not stand someone who is so hot and cold when it comes to love.
Janiyah worked hard to prove that she could always rise to the occasion no matter what her family and associates thought. Her being faulted for not being so straight laced was a letdown. Then for everyone to make her feel bad about the changes she made after their criticisms UGH!
Cute as hell friends to lovers romance between a straitlaced accountant and a free-spirited digital assistant. He's her older brother's best friend to boot.
My first encounter with this author, and I have to say that it was a nice change to find a romance that featured African American characters that weren’t characterized by an urban theme or setting, and not overwhelmed with ‘street appropriate’ language. While there are several urban authors that I adore, I also want to see stories from the other perspectives, those stories from people who aren’t headline news but should be.
A good romance feels real and solid, with characters that you can relate to, and their differences from you (financial, religious, and cultural) are solidly presented but it is the similarities that draw you in. We all want love, acceptance and happiness, and we all have obstacles to overcome as we seek that perfect person. Romance should celebrate finding love and the differences in relationships, no matter the race or color of the characters. Synithia Williams manages to provide an entrée into a developing relationship between two characters that speaks to every romance reader, and that presents us all with a new way of seeing the people around us.
Janiyah is a bit spoiled and headstrong, wanting to have it all but not necessarily dedicated to working for it. She enjoys her free time, and with her father willing to supplement her expenses, she isn’t ‘required’ to finish growing up and take responsibility for her life. Fun loving and flirty, she is the outgoing girl who is the center of attention and often speaks or acts before she thinks things through.
Fredrick (or Freddy as Janiyah calls him) is a few years older, and as the best friend of Janiyah’s brother Aaron, he knows the little spitfire well. He finds her interesting and attractive, but far too much like his mother in behavior and desires than he wants. Fredrick wants a woman who will be happy with him and want to work together for a successful life, and he doesn’t think that Janiyah is capable of hard work or controlling her desire for luxuries. Watching his father “lose his mind” over his mother, and keep the family in debt as he bought ever-more luxurious items to keep his mother happy, he won’t be caught in that trap.
These two have a long history, and there has always been an attraction on Janiyah’s part. But, Fredrick remembers the spoilt and tantruming little girl, sees the young woman all too happy for Daddy’s help with her bills, and well, it IS his best friend’s little sister. Every moment of attraction that Fredrick has is quickly cooled by one or another of those images, and his reminder that he will not behave as his father did.
Early on, it is clear that a strong attraction exists, but the relationship is a series of baby steps. Janiyah has to reveal her true self, and Fredrick needs to make peace with his misconceptions and start to see her, and himself in a new light. Several interactions and moments where the ‘real’ heart of them both come to light, and the reveals and pacing are perfectly suited. You really KNOW these characters and start to cheer them on – waiting for them to take that last leap of faith and go for it.
Williams uses the secondary characters and the expository moments in a perfectly constructed story. While the secondary characters serve only to fuel the insight we are gaining on the new couple, they don’t overreach their purpose, and help to flush out the story. They don’t interfere with the main story arc that is Janiyah and Fredrick’s budding relationship, and the arc shows a solid progression from tentative to steamy, without much fluff or filler that would only distract. A story that many romance lovers need to read – this is a book that is carefully crafted to give maximum smiles to readers.
I received an eBook copy of the title from the publisher for purpose of honest review for Tasty Book Tours. I was not compensated for this review. All conclusions are my own responsibility.
This book held a lot of laughter and love! Janiyah and Freddy were too cute together. It took them a while to get it together but I enjoyed the little cat and mouse chase they did until they got it right! I can’t wait to read David’s story! I know he have a lot to say! Great job to the author!! This family standalone series started out great!
Janiyah Henderson (virtual assistant) may be an adult, but her dad doesn't see it that way. Granted, she's enjoying her post-college life of little-to-no responsibility, but when her dad announces at a family meeting that he’s selling his automotive dealerships and she can't handle working a real job at Henderson’s, there's only one thing to do: land a desk job and prove him wrong. When her brother's best friend, Fredrick Jenkins (accountant, CEO), needs a new assistant, she knows she's the perfect candidate. So, what if she's had a crush on the conservative accountant since she was nine? She's the last woman Freddy would fall for. But Fredrick is far from impervious to Janiyah's charms. Though he can't help but be attracted to her, he knows Janiyah is more interested in eating his cereal and teasing him than viewing him as more than the good guy next door. Being with her reminds him of his parents’ flighty marriage and he doesn’t want to go there. When he offers her the job, he can't imagine her giving up her late mornings and colorful outfits for 8:00 a.m. meetings and pantyhose for too long. But as Janiyah excels as his employee, he fears he's in danger of falling hard for a woman he shouldn't care for. Pretty soon the attraction they've tried to ignore boils to the surface. And after Fredrick shows Janiyah the man behind the numbers, she's ready to show him that she's just the type of woman he needs.
Awesome! I love the Henderson family. The brothers are so protective of their sister, Janiyah. But because of her creative personality, Janiyah comes across as impulsive and flighty. As a result, she feels disrespected. Frederick has loved Janiyah since they were young but he's seen what happens when a woman can twist her man around her little finger. Take his parents for example. His father is drowning in debt because he can't say no to Frederick's mother and her shopping addiction. They are about to lose their home and his mother wants to buy a boat!!!! But is it fair, for Frederick, to make Janiyah pay for his mother's sins?
Synithia Williams is an excellent writer. She does a great job of bringing her characters to life flaws and all. However, I almost put this book down several times while reading it because I was so frustrated. Freddy and Janiyah literally spent 75% of the book running from each other. The fear, indecisiveness and downright stupidity almost drove me crazy. I’m scared to get caught up reading another book of SW. I truly read for entertainment and the level of stress and frustration these characters brought out defeats my whole purpose of reading. The ending was good, however I’m not sure if it was good enough to offset all of the frustration leading up to it.
Janiyah Henderson and Frederick Jenkins had been best friends for a long time. In fact they lived in the same building across the hall from each other. They finally acted on their true feelings for each other. There were lots of ups and downs but ultimately they came together. It was a great story.
Janiyah & Fredrick were fun and exasperating. She is in living color, charming & energetic, and he's calm, cool & collected. This was a very entertaining story. Mrs Driggers steals the show. LOL 😆.
A fun read. Janiyanh finally got the love of her life Fredrick Percival Jenkins in spite of him thinking he would turn into his father. Janiyanh will always be fun and colorful. Mrs. Triggers was my favorite
This is my first foray if I remember correctly into the romantic world of Mrs. Williams. I gave it 5 stars because but was a truly life inspiring romantic read. On to book 2.
In the beyond did not know if I would the book but as I kept reading. It became more and more interesting to see the plot with its twist and turns. Of course I love a happy ending not a suspense ending.
I have read all of Synithia Williams' books and have yet to be disappointed. She's a great writer and I love that her stories are about relatable characters dealing with real-life situations. I love that the drama never takes away from the romance.
Just My Type is the story of Janiyah and Fredrick (Freddy as Janiyah calls him).
Fredrick, who is about 4 years older than Janiyah, is her brother, Aaron's, best friend since they were kids.
Janiyah has always been somewhere between infatuated and in love with Fredrick. She confessed her love when she was 17 and asked him to be her first but he turned her down, of course. From that point on, she's kept her feelings locked away, though they remained just beneath the surface.
Initially, Janiyah comes off as somewhat of a spoiled baby of the family and a little flighty. She makes her living as a virtual assistant to circumvent being tied down to a 9-5, corporate job. Although she has her own apartment, her father still supplements her income. She wears loud colors, is flirtatious and impulsive.
Fredrick is the complete opposite. He owns his own accounting firm, is somewhat of a nerd and is highly responsible. He is also jaded by the circumstances of his upbringing. Although he was brought up in a home with two loving parents, he learned early on that they were always on the brink of a financial disaster due to his father spending frivolously on material things to keep his mother happy.
Fredrick made a vow to himself that he would never be with a woman who caused him to lose his good sense the way his father has always been with his mother. He has decided he needs a stable, responsible woman to settle down with. Someone wholly unlike Janiyah.
The problem is that Fredrick is just as attracted to Janiyah as she is to him. He fights this attraction strongly despite her best efforts. When she realizes he wants her, she tries to break him down but he sees too much of his mother in her. When it comes to Janiyah he sees himself doing anything to please her, including making bad decisions like his father.
I love the way the story evolves. Although we get to see early on how strongly their feelings are for each other, they don't jump right into a relationship. We get to see who Janiyah really is and it's not what you think in the beginning.
Fredrick's convictions make much more sense when we see his interactions with his parents.
This story feels very real and is told in a way that engages you from the very beginning. There was no fluff or filler. Every scene made sense and fit into the storyline. The supporting characters were interesting and only hung around long enough to make the story complete. They didn't take away from the main characters in any way, which is a huge problem for me in many of the romances I read.
The love scenes were tastefully written but just close enough to erotic to spark some fire.
I'm hoping to hear more from one or two of the supporting characters in another installment. I can definitely see a story with one of Janiyah's brothers.
I highly recommend this book and looking forward to more from this author!
Just My Type was my first read by Synithia Williams and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Janiyah Henderson believes she has the ideal life after college. She works as a virtual assistant where she sets her own hours and spends her earnings freely. She feels she has accomplished the American dream, that of having very little responsibility and living across from her brother’s best friend. Her quest for independence is evident, however, she lacks the drive to obtain knowledge of current events and comes across as a “joke” to others.
When a family meeting is called and her father tells her she is unable to handle a real job, Janiyah does what any person would do, she set out to prove him wrong. She is tired of people not taking her seriously and strives to rectify the situation. In steps Fredrick Jenkins, Janiyah’s next door neighbor and her brother’s best friend. He has been around for years and Janiyah has secretly been in love with him since high school. Janiyah seeks employment at Fredrick’s accounting firm and also tries to gain access to his heart. Does she succeed? Readers will need to pick up a copy of Just My Type to find out.
Ms. Williams did a great job with the character development of both Janiyah and Fredrick. Janiyah’s character did appear to be flighty and impulsive whereas Fredrick was the laid back, conservative next door neighbor. These two were total opposites, but the attraction was apparent on both sides. Fredrick worked very hard to not act on that attraction because of some issues he was dealing with and the fact that Janiyah was his best friend’s sister.
There are a few scenes in the book that will have readers laughing as well as shaking their heads. They each have issues they must work to resolve and overcome before they realize their feelings. The story flowed very well and will keep readers’ interest in the outcome of this couple’s journey. Overall, a good read.
Why I Read This Book: Best friend’s brother/sister trope is a favorite of mine.
In a Nutshell: I thought this story was okay. I have some issues with the heroine.
The Set Up: Freddy and Janiyah have known each other since they were kids and currently live across the hall from each other. Their relationship becomes something more.
What I Liked: I liked Freddy. I think he was trying to do what he thought was the right thing. He is attracted to Janiyah but doesn’t want to act on it for a couple reasons.
The serious scenes where Freddy wasn’t avoiding Janiyah and she wasn’t pretending everything was good were pretty wrenching for me. He doesn’t know if he can trust her after seeing her in action all these years. She just wants to be taken seriously and wants Freddy to love her for who she is.
The power play between them when they first get together—“Freddy,” “no, Fredrick”—was hot. They had great chemistry.
I liked the flow of the book. Intertwining her family with Freddy and Janiyah’s changing relationship. And Freddy and Janiyah’s romantic relationship with it’s stops and starts was well done.
What I Didn’t Like: I wasn’t a big fan of Janiyah. I think she needed to grow up when it came to her family and love life. She wanted to be taken seriously but still acted immature and was still taking money from her dad. She eventually gets there but it was rough going for me for most of the book.
Overall Impression: Just My Type was an okay story for me. I liked Freddy. I was rooting for Freddy and Janiyah to get together in the end.
This is my first read from this author, but it will not be my last.
Fredrick & Janiyah have known each other since they were kids. When Janiyah was seventeen, she tried to lose her virginity to Fredrick, but he turned her down. Janiyah was heartbroken by his rejection and as the years passed by, she decided to keep her feelings for Fredrick hidden because she believed that they were not meant for each other & would be better off as friends, especially because they are nothing alike. Fredrick is a square & Janiyah is a free spirit.
Janiyah is tired of being seen as a joke by her family & friends & is determined that she is capable of taking care of herself and working a real nine to five. She applies for a job at Fredrick's accounting firm as his assistant. Despite of his efforts to keep Janiyah at arms length, Fredrick is having a hard time viewing her as only his best friends little sister and neighbor. This becomes especially difficult after he hires her as his assistant.
Fredrick & Janiyah's story had the perfect blend of humor, romance, & steam. I love how they built on their friendship some more before jumping into bed but when they finally did.....it was HOT!
I really enjoyed this book & I hope to see more books featuring Janiyah's brothers.
I loved this one! Janiyah and Frederick have known each other forever and are good friends, even living across the hall from one another. I love the alternating pov so you know what they're both thinking and how they see one another, because they are both clueless. It is fun that as the reader you know the whole story while they are each in the dark. It is great how they balance each other. At first glance they seem wrong for each other, but they actually complement one another very well. Frederick is very serious and doesn't want to make his father's mistakes while Janiyah is a bit flighty and knows how to have fun. Once again, Synithia Williams makes me feel all the feelings. A perfect romance read.
Janiyah has had a crush on Fredrick for years. As a teenager she acted on those feelings only to be shot down. Since then, she has been dating one guy after another. Each still hold a flame but neither acts on their feelings. Fredrick thinks that Janiyah has the potential to hold him down financially like his father is with his mother. Janiyah thinks that Fredrick only see her as a type of little sister. When they both can no longer hold up the facade of friendship the story really heats up. And the way he makes her say Fredrick instead of Freddy...oh my LAWD!
This was the perfect light romance! I've always been partial to stories where the H/H have a history and this book was no exception. The story was very well written with quite a few laugh out loud moments. Both Freddy and Janiyah were very likeable characters though Janiyah was my favorite. She had me cracking up with her antics and her "virtual assistant" job. :-)
I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Loved it! Although I found myself wanting to shake Freddy and Janiyah, the chemistry between them was great, and the love scenes were HOT! I liked that Freddy was 5'10, an accountant, and slightly nerdy; nice to see the 'regular' brothers get some love.
Really cute love story with lots of heat. Don't miss it!
Can't wait to see what's next from this author. Love her writing style!
The relationship between the two main characters was very entertaining. Lifelong friends afraid to enter into a relationship for fear that it want last. Trying to fight the inevitable and realizing that you have no choice or control over your feelings. Very sexy and hot read extremely romantic
This was a good read. I enjoyed the authors vivid descriptions, the sarcasm and friendly banter between characters, and the lightness of the read.
I overall enjoyed the characters although the dialogue amongst characters seemed unbelievable at times. In the event of spoiling, I will not divulge details, but overall a good read.
this was an okay read. while I appreciate angst in relationships these two just got on my nerves. the storyline was awesome however I like to be a part of the happy ending after enduring the back and forward moments with the couple.
