'I thoroughly recommend it. It's a sort of fireworks display - but with words.' ANTHONY HOROWITZ
Four unrelated brutal deaths. No motive. No clues. But this a mere harbinger of the horror waiting to be unleashed. The Gates of Hell are opening and only The Gatekeeper can close them and prevent Lucifer inspired global carnage. With the countdown to Armageddon fast approaching, Nick Gold, TV’s cynical, irreligious ‘Paranormal Detective’ must face his own, and some very real, demons in a race across the world in the not-always helpful company of an American ball-busting lawyer, Lesley-Ann Trobe. The chase, as they say, is on!
The Gatekeeper by Russ Kane is a creepy tale that had me at the cover’s tagline “In Hell, everyone can hear you scream..” Kane’s anti-hero, Nick Gold is a lapsed Christian, who thinks he’s an atheist since the death of his girlfriend. What he definitely is, is the host of ‘Paranormal Detective’ an independent British Television show that visits supposedly haunted places and gives the viewing public what it wants, a bit of the heebee jeebee’s once a week. He’s good at it, too. One day, a viewer named Joanne gets in touch with him and he finally relents to meet with her (even though he thinks her mad). She tells him her dead brother killed husband while they were on holiday in Turkey. He thinks she’s madder still, but agrees to research it a bit. He’s not really a paranormal detective, but it can’t hurt the show to have a look. Once the research starts, he finds out Joanne isn’t the only one experiencing these assaults. A woman in America is facing the death penalty for alledgedly eating her husband’s face and killing him. A Russian was placed in an asylum for swearing demons came out of a drill site. What Nick starts to come across in his research tells the side of him that is the former Theology Student Joanne’s story rings true. He concocts a plan to get his boss at Good Foot Productions to back all the research travel. To Nick’s astonishment, he excitedly does. Nick begins to travel, meeting as he goes: an angel, his dead girlfriend, a crude American Attorney (aren’t they all), a journalist, and other creatures, some soulless, some not, some will die, some will not. Nick will also meet The Gatekeeper. I loved this book, I hope Kane writes a sequel. Kane leads me to believe that somewhere there is a genetics lab in a dark London alley and they combined the DNA of Poe, William Peter Blatty and Peter Straub and suddenly there was Kane. Get this book, put on a pot of your favorite caffeinated beverage, turn off the phone, tell everyone you are gone for the night and lock the door. You will want to finish this in one go! I did it in 7 hours because I had interruptions. .bah! I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Currently at 25% and loving it! Horror meets Kaned Laughter... spot the clever Kaneisms as you go along; Sympathy for the Devil? Maybe. Will let you know when finished. Glad I’m in 40* heat and not dark and dreary UK- keeps the ghosties away....
