- writing was, for a lack of a better word, stilted and repetitive (especially the smut scenes)
- wasn’t aware mack was a widow, had i know i wouldn’t have read this.
- like i mentioned, the writing was repetitive. can’t tell you how many times ellie would say she couldn’t be responsible for ruining a marriage AFTER already doing something with mack just for it to happen all over again and end with her saying the same thing.
- mack dreams of his wife a couple of times after sleeping with ellie, says his wife was the love of his life and has never loved another women, mentions how ellie has a couple of characteristics that remind him of his wife, says that elllies scent reminds him of the way his wife smelled, and when he learns that ellie loves this island that mack and his wife used to visit, he says that he wants to take ellie to the same pubs and restaurants him and his wife would go to and even wants to sleep with ellie in the same cottage he used to sleep with his wife in
- while i believed that mack did love ellie, i didn’t enjoy the moments when it felt like the only reason mack loved ellie was because she shared similarities with his wife
- smut scenes weren’t that great. each time they did something together mack would say the same things and it honestly just sounded awkward or unnatural to me. (not sure if anyone will understand what i mean by this)
- mack and ellie are both grown adults and yet they were complete idiots especially towards the end of the book
- it wasn’t until the last 30 pages that mack finally admitted how he felt so the majority of the back was just a constant back and forth with the both of them saying to themselves that they couldn’t be with the other which was just frustrating
- the plot progressed slowly just for everything to be wrapped up quickly in the last 30 pages and one major point of the story was wrapped up in the last half of one anticlimactic chapter
- annoyed by the epilogue. it ended with her father telling her congratulations for making it as a reporter, which he didn’t believe she would be able to do. not only that but when he had disowned her he called her a whore after believing the lies of a potential client, andrew, over his own daughter. the last time he saw her he, yet again, didn’t believe anything she had to say about andrew and you’re telling me all it took was a weak congratulations and no apology for what he said to her for her to forget about it ??
Overall, for a story with a majority of five star ratings, I was left disappointed and underwhelmed.
