Troublesome Roommate

Rate this book
Roommate Wanted: Looking for someone to share my crappy apartment. Bonus points if you are a hot guy with rocking abs.

The last part was a joke. Biggest mistake of my life.

When I opened my door to my new roommate, I never expected him to be exactly what I had asked for.

Hot? Very.

Tall? Check.

Gorgeous eyes? Blue, and check.

Rocking abs? Check.

I thought I had scored the jackpot. But what was the first thing he said to me?

"Move."

Now I hate my new roommate and he hates me too.

It doesn’t matter. I will just continue my life as if he isn't here, shirtless and roaming around our apartment. I have other things to focus on, like the new job I am starting tomorrow to clear off my crushing debts.

First day of work and who do I bump into?

My freakin' roommate.

And the worst part?

He's my boss.

This is my first read by this author. To be honest, I’m pretty much middle of the road with this book. I didn’t dislike it but it didn’t wow me and there were too many things that just felt off. It has a good premise, but the characters were inconsistent in their behavior towards each other. Kevin seemed all in from practically the time they meet but when Audrey gets on board with it just a few days later he’s all whoa whoa whoa too fast .. so that was weird for me as a reader. We’re reading an insta story so it felt off. No one should be shying away from feelings too soon in an insta story, imo. The conflict to the story was presented as a big secret of sorts but when it all came out, it was just there. Like the story itself had an air of anticipation to some big reveal and then … nothing. That felt off as well for me.

I think the book could have done with maybe a better beta/editing team. Everything that threw me off about this story would have been caught by a beta reader. But despite all of this, I didn’t not enjoy myself while I read this book so there’s that …..

This is my first time reading this author and I really enjoyed reading this book. The plot is interesting and it’s well written. I liked the authors writing style and thought she created some nice characters. It’s a nice pleasant read only taking a couple of hours to read cover to cover so not too long. If you are looking for a romance book to spend a couple of hours with then this could easily be the book for you!

So I was given the ARC copy of this book by the author and I am going to write an honest review.

When I first started reading this book, I had low expectations. But as I kept reading, it got me hooked and realised it's actually my cup of tea. The relationship between Audrey and Kevin is well-developed. What caught my eyes is Zane. His appearance always makes me laugh and smile. Zane is such an amazing friend anyone could ever have, which low-key makes him my favourite character. The friendship chemistry between Zane and Audrey, is insane lovely. Him being her best friend who goes through ups and downs alongside with her is definitely a friendship goal.

This one won't be any trouble for you to read!!
Zane and Audrey are friends and live together, they are both tight on money and decide to bring in a third roommate, Zane's old friend, Kevin. Audrey thinks Kevin is a jerk but can't dwell on it as she has to get ready for her new job. Imagine her surprises when her new boss turns out to be her new roommate. Will she ever look at him as anything other than a jerk, especially after so many failed relationships in her past? Will Kevin be able to break through and show Audrey she's worth everything? This is a great book, filled with love, angst, secrets, a gay best friend and a HEA. Enjoy!

This story started off great and was moving along pretty good until the ending. Audrey and Kevin both are coming off breakup, Audrey has had more than her fair share. When they first meet it’s not the best circumstances. Kevin is ride Audrey is not feeling him. It doesn’t help when she finds out he is her new boss.they start a relationship. Audrey is insecure and keeps second guessing everything. The big fight and secret reveal were a bit of a let down. Loved Kevin and best friend Zane.

There are so many things right with this book that I have trouble giving it 3 stars, but a few things held me back from making the jump to 4 stars (there was a moment there where I thought it was leaning towards 5 stars, but the ending ruined any chance of that happening). Let me start by explaining the premise - Audrey is a woman in her twenties who has struggled with a few things in the past few years. She keeps falling for her boyfriends, only to find out that she was way more invested in the relationship than they were. On top of that, she has a mountain of student loan debt and tends to rely on alcohol to self-medicate. To save money, her best friend and roommate Zane (100% gay and 100% endearing) decides to invite an old friend to come be their third roommate. Kevin doesn’t make a great first impression, so Audrey takes an instant dislike to him, even though she finds him incredibly sexy. Unfortunately for her, Kevin turns out to be her new boss, so avoiding him - both in the office and at home - is not an option. As they spend more time together, Audrey realizes that Kevin might not be so bad, and things go from there.

I will admit, the vast majority of the story is great. I grew to love Kevin as a character, Zane was a fun addition, and the chemistry was definitely there. It’s a steamy book, but not overwhelmingly so. And the relationship was developed nicely. However, the book loses points at the beginning and the end for me. As I started reading the book, the writing felt a little clumsy, and when Audrey is described as being a romance novelist who isn’t all that successful, I couldn’t help thinking that the book might be something of a self-portrait. But as the story moved along, I really got into the characters and put that behind me. It was the fight at the end of the book that threw me off the most. Up until that point, I liked Audrey as a character, but oh boy did the fight really change my opinion of her. No spoilers here, but wow. Before that, it had only been a few brief comments from Kevin that rubbed me the wrong way, but Audrey really trumped that with her reaction to the fight. Overall, I would certainly read more from the author. While there is room for growth, I enjoyed the vast majority of the book.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback and review.

The first thing I wanted to address was that the description of the book doesn't seem to exactly match what happened. The description started out with: “Roommate Wanted: Looking for someone to share my crappy apartment. Bonus points if you are a hot guy with rocking abs.", but in the book the ad is never mentioned and the new roommate, Kevin, is actually her current roommate, Zane's, childhood friend that he's kept in touch with. The ad needs to be removed from the description, because it’s pretty misleading and the story is completely different than what I expected.

As far as the story goes, I definitely liked the overall idea. The whole roommate dynamic is always fun, plus adding the boss dynamic made it a double whammy. I liked Audrey and Zane’s quirks and their friendship. I was lukewarm about both of the main characters, but thoroughly enjoyed both Zane and Sam, two of the supporting characters. Kevin's mom was likable as well. I personally felt that both Audrey and Kevin could use some more character development. Especially because Audrey obviously has some pretty extreme self esteem issues and is quite emotionally immature. The readers would probably benefit from more background about how she became that way. I feel like the main characters didn't get to know each other that well and that meant as the reader, I never got to know them on a deeper level either. I do think there are two ways this could be easily addressed and really make the story more lovable for readers with similar mindsets to mine. The first would be to add more background about Audrey's obvious issues. The second would be to minimize her blow up and instead make her a more sane and functioning adult.

I really wanted to love the story, but I just couldn’t get on board with the emotional immaturity or the lack of character development. There are also some serious editing issues, maybe the worst editing I’ve ever seen.

I can definitely see that Chloe Grey has potential to grow into an extremely successful author. She clearly has creative and original ideas. If she just continues to develop her unique style and focuses more on character development, she will write some amazing books, which she can have professional edited.

I’ll definitely be keeping my eye on Chloe’s work!

This was my first book I've read by Chloe Gray and I was pleasantly surprised by how hooked I was on the book in the beginning. I'm not a fan of most Contemporary Romance novels, but I enjoyed this one. I thoroughly enjoyed Zane, the gay best friend. He was very well written and was a breath of fresh air. I know some critique the emotional issues the main character struggles with, but it's refreshing to have a character that isn't perfect. I do agree, however, that her emotional instability gets overwhelming by the end of the book.

Since it's part of the blurb, it shouldn't be a spoiler, but I was a little put off by the new roommate becoming her new boss. To me, it just wasn't very believable that such a relationship would be allowed in a workplace in this day and age. Even though he owned the company and was more than just a manager, it would be a Human Resources nightmare, which distracted from the believability of the story. My main critique though is some of the controlling mannerisms of the boss/boyfriend. Personally, I prefer strong female leads and Audrey is anything but. Kevin though just has these little red flags that made me cringe and want her to run away as fast as possible. I was on pins and needles waiting to see if he would turn out to be an abusive person. It never came to it, but I still cringed every time he would boss her around outside of work. For example, Kevin demands that Audrey does not drink throughout the entire book without any explanation, until you reach the end when there's a short one sentence explanation. I just felt like there was so much buildup to a character development piece that it turned out to be such a letdown. I also think the story is a self-portrait and I wish she had chosen a different profession than an author. The loop back to the title at the very end was a bit too much for me. It ended up being a bit of a groaner.

Overall, the potential is there. Gray has some fresh new ideas that will help her with writing future books. And she may convert people to read more Contemporary Romance. Yes, there is absolutely room for improvement, but I'd be concerned if there wasn't in her second published book. I'm interested to see what she comes up with next.

I have always said I'm not a fan of insta-love, BUT I keep contradicting myself. THEY ARE SO ADDICTING!!! Now, Audrey and Kevin weren't exactly insta-love, but it sure was insta-LUST! These two had the best sparks from day one!

I really loved Audrey's character. She's trying to be an adult, get a good job, pay off loans, all of the things none of us want to do. I also loved how she wasn't perfect. Audrey had a pretty major flaw in this book and it wasn't a pretty one. But, that helped her be so real and relatable! So knowing all of this, and seeing her instant reaction to Kevin, it was hysterical! Between her nickname for him and having to work for him, this could have easily been the series of unfortunate events! BUT Audrey was so strong, and wasn't going to let an attraction getting in the way of her making money and living that adult life. Major kudos to her, because NO WAY could I have worked in that situation.

Then we have Kevin. At first I thought he was a total dick, but of course, he wasn't. I really loved the little things he did for Audrey. THEY WERE ADORABLE! Really, he was adorable. His reaction to Zane was hysterical too. There were so many misunderstandings between everyone, it made for some really entertaining parts. Above the entertaining, his doting on Audrey was my favorite!

I LOVE secondary characters, and man did she hit the nail on the head with Sam and Zane! They gave this story so much! Between the juicy details these two wanted, and gave, and the banter, they were so perfect. They added the perfect amount of interest to this story.

For being a newish author, Chloe did such an amazing job! I really loved this book from beginning to end. There were so many things that kept the wheels moving, she had the perfect amount of emotions, she had some really stupid moments for the characters, and she had such real scenarios. I loved alllll of those things! It really made for a well rounded story. I love when a story has many layers and many emotions, it just makes it so complete. Kudos Chloe, it was amazing!

This is my first book by newish author Chloe Grey and I really enjoyed the story. I’m a big fan of insta-love stories and when you add in the boss/secretary aspect it heats up the story ten-fold. Zane and Audrey are best friends and looking for a new roommate to help with the oh so expensive rent in NYC when Kevin, a childhood friend of Zane’s gets in touch looking for a place to live.

Audrey isn’t too sure about this guy especially when Zane doesn’t too much about him since they haven’t remained close friends since middle school. What we find out when he arrives is that he’s tall, sexy and somewhat abrupt in his people skills. This of course doesn’t sit well with Audrey but she’s trying to ignore this as she’s getting ready to start her new job….where she discovers that her new roommate is her new boss! Let the clichés begin!!

Kevin can’t quite believe his “luck” when he sees that Audrey is his new secretary and he can’t wait to take their somewhat of a sniping back forth relationship to yet another level because let’s face it, they’re totally attracted to each other and need to act on it!

I loved the characters and the heat they had for each other. Zane and Audrey are a total riot sometimes and then we have other secondary characters like Marcus that just add to the story. The only thing I would’ve loved to see more of is some backstory on Audrey as she definitely has some self-esteem issues that I’m sure have stemmed from her previous relationships but it seems like there’s definitely more to the story than what we’ve been given.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and would definitely read Ms. Grey again in the future.

I love a good roommate book, especially with so much suspense from the unknown of Kevin’s issues. I had this awesome author contact me and I couldn’t wait to read this book!

Audrey seemed so much like me it felt weird at times to read. So many insecurities she had I knew I had from before getting married. The need to be loved after being hurt so many times is overwhelming. Plus the amount of debt you have looming over your head doesn’t help the self esteem when you have to reuse clothes over and over. I felt a huge connection to Audrey up until an awful thing happened and her heart got broken... she pissed me off something fierce. I wanted to strangle her and slap her until she saw reason because holy fuck was that childish!! 🤬 Zane (her best friend) seemed to have struggles of his own and I couldn’t help but be curious to find out if we would know more!

Kevin is a bit of the unknown and I was quite scared the build up wouldn’t be what I imagined his secrets being would... while they weren’t the spewing your drink all over the person sitting in front of you, they were pretty epic and upsetting. I worried about so many things with this man because he seemed so secretive and I was scared he would do something epically horrible.

I loved the writing style and even just reading from Audrey’s point of view, which I usually don’t, but it all came together very well. I love most of everything about this book and couldn’t put it down!! Romance, hot sex, fun gay roommate and incredibly hot boss what more could you need! 😍

What a cute story from Chloe Gray! Audrey, a recent college graduate, and Zane are roommates struggling to pay the bills while living in expensive New York City. When Zane and his middle school friend Kevin reconnect and is looking for a room to rent, it is the perfect solution to their problems. When Kevin moves in, there is definite chemistry between him and Audrey, but after a terrible past with dating she is trying to stay away from relationships. Audrey feels her luck post grad is turning around after she lands a full time job that will pay the bills as a secretary, but is in for a big surprise her first day – her boss is none other than Kevin! As the pair continue to get to know each other in and out of the office, they develop and then act on their growing feelings. There was a ton of miscommunication, assumptions, secrets, and jumping to conclusions between Audrey and Kevin, and I felt the bulk of the book was sorting through all that and could have been shortened with the omission of some of that. Other than that, I actually felt the storyline was cute and unique compared to similar books. This was my first read by Chloe but won’t be my last!

This was a really great story and I truly enjoyed the journey that the author took me on. I liked the fact that the characters have flaws, they're not perfect and they make stupid choices sometimes. Audrey is living with her best friend, Zane, who happens to be gay. They are struggling to pay the bills so they have an old middle school friend of Zane's, a guy named Kevin move in with them to help with the bills. Then Kevin finds out his new secretary is Audrey and things kind of heat up between these two. But Audrey has been hurt before and is afraid to try another relationship and Kevin is keeping secrets so things aren't working out so well. They struggle to navigate their new relationship and you'll have to read the book to find out if they can make it work. The only reason this book did not get five stars is because I truly did not care for the fact that Audrey was so pessimistic and expected way too much from Kevin, way too fast. Otherwise this was a great read and I do recommend it.

This is a brilliant story. The writing is not great, always using "my boyfriend" "my boss" etc. instead of Kevin's name gets to be a bit too much. What really makes this great, and keeps you turning the pages, is trying to figure out what Kevin is hiding. Kevin rents a room from an old schoolmate, who happens to also live with Kevin's new secretary. Kevin wants her immediately, and is so angry when she opens the door, he's rude to her, then ignores her. Once he finds out that she's single, he's determined to win her. Audrey is done with men, all they do is treat her like dirt or cheat on her. But she can't seem to resist Kevin. But Kevin is hiding things, but there's no hint as to what it is until the end, and it wasn't what I thought it was, not even close. It's a must add to your TBR list.

This book was given to me by the author for an honest review.

In this roommates to lovers story, bestfriends Audrey and Zane take on a third roommate to save money. When an old friend of Zane's, Kevin moves in, he does not make a good impression on Audrey.

Audrey starting a new job the next day finds herself with Kevin as her new boss. Both are equally surprised. The more time they spend together, the stronger the attraction and a relationship begins.

This is a quick read. The relationship between Audrey and Zane is so sweet. Zane is such a great addition to the story. The story had plenty of steamy scenes, Zane is the perfect bestfriend, Kevin is sweet and alluring. The only part I had trouble with is a big scene at the end and Audrey's behavior. I did enjoy the epilogue, as it brings the story together.

Very good romance
Very good romance, well written, with good characters but maybe a little simple on the length. I thought there would be more action because of Marcus's character, but eventually even if his presence hides a secret, the consequences are less terrible than I thought.
The story begins with Audrey discovering that her second roommate is none other than her new boss, Kevin, who already as a roommate is unpleasant. She tends to fall in love very quickly, if not too fast, to the point that she does not want to try anything for fear of having broken heart again, and drink a little more.
Slowly, but surely, Kevin traces a path to her, but at the same time remains surrounded by mystery.

I started off loving this book in a 5 star way, but then Audrey developed some seriously uncharming mental issues, and it was all I could do to finish it. It is really a shame because this could have been a wonderfully endearing story. I’m not trying to even imply in the slightest that mental health stuff can’t be loveable, as we all have our issues afterall, but it could have been handled much better than this shallow, stereotypical, paranoid, drama queen, yo-yo portrayal. All the other characters had their flaws but retained their humanity, aside from Marcus, whose character and all subsequent dialogue also seemed forced and absurd.

Refreshing and Truly Wholesome Modern Romance

I am an avid reader of many genres, modern romances being one my favorites. Too often the plots are predictable and the characters boring. This refreshing new novel by this amazingly talented author kept my attention with her great story telling and a really hot sex scenes. WOW.

From an awkward beginning of meeting a rude new roommate, later finding out he's your hot desirable boss to becoming friends and then lovers, it had me going throughout.

I especially love Chloe's 1st person writing style so we can know her main character, Audrey Hemlock, journey from hate to love to hate and back.

I truly recommend this to all my fellow romance readers and look forward to.the next Chloe Grey novel.

I really enjoyed Troublesome Roommate by Chloe Grey! Kevin and Audrey had sizzling chemistry and I found myself cheering them on from the beginning. Audrey and her best friend Zane share an apartment to help with the rent, they add a third roommate- Kevin, Zane's friend from middle school. From the description, its obvious that Kevin is a hottie. Even Zane is interested at first. Until he feels the sparks between Audrey and Kevin. If living together isn't complicated enough, Audrey learns that her new crush is her new boss! Is there connection strong enough to survive Audrey's insecurities and the the secret Kevin is keeping from them? This is a book I highly recommend.

It was enjoyable and entertaining and what stopped it being a 4 star was that even though I had liked Audrey she annoyed the heck out of me at the end and I also felt like she was a little to needy, yes she had bad experiences and that was understandable but at times I did want to slap her. Then we have Kevin, who is the new roommate who is utterly hot and ends up being her boss, you knew that was coming and considering that Audrey had jerks of boyfriend you could see why Kevin keeping secrets would worry her, and why was he so secretive, well grab a copy and find out.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I enjoyed this story about Audrey and Kevin. Audrey and her roommate/best friend Zane are getting a new roommate. Kevin was Zane's friend when they were 14 but stayi in touch. When she first meets Kevin he's kind of a jerk, he thinks Zane and Audrey are together. So image her surprise when she starts her new job only to find out he's her new boss as well. She's had bad lick with guys in the past so she is scared to start a new relationship with Kevin. Love the sparks between them. But misunderstandings and secrets cause trouble.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this, and I really highly HIGHLY recommend it.
Really fantastic imperfect but charismatic characters and a loveable gay best friend that I think EVERYONE needs in their life. I wish Zane was real, seriously.
It starts off as a bit of a slow burn, but with really great chemistry - and from about page 80 increases rapidly to about a 5/5 chilli pepper rating!
The character development is worth it though, and a really satisfying ending.
I would rank this book TOP out of the equivalent books in the same genre/heat level that I've read in recent history.

This was a very nice romantic read. The story was good and quite realistic. The characters all had flaws which made the story believable and relatable. There are numerous very sensual scenes contained within the story. Over the course of the story the two main male and female characters experienced ł gamut of emotions. Over the course of this story the two main male and female characters evolved and matured.

Bad money management.

Audrey Hemlock writes books and is interviewing fir a new job.

Bond, Kevin Bond is her new roommate. They don’t get off to the best start. But I loved that he read her books and wanted to know if her characters had a boy or a girl.

Oh, and he’s her new boss.

But Kevin is keeping a secret. Why is he living with Audrey and Zane if he’s a wealthy business owner?

I enjoyed their relationship and the fiscal realities.

I enjoyed this story of Audrey and Kevin, it is fairly uncomplicated with just a few twists and turns which was pleasently surprising! Sometimes it is really nice to read a book that is not full of intrigue and dark themes! Audrey and Kevin have a wonderful chemestry, and her best friend Zane is a lovely caracter in the mix! I thought the story well written and I got a good feel for all the caracters and the environment they were in!

Chloe Grey is a first for me and one to be on the lookout for from this talented author. I loved that it is not your usual romance but one filled with comedy and friendship. She shows us how Audrey is nervous of letting her heart out and the thought of rejection again. These are things we all have in common and boy Chloe Grey really hits how with Audrey. These two are hilarious and boy so much sexual foreplay it was fun to see what will happen.

Love Zane! We all need a friend like that. Love Kevin - so swoon-worthy. I have trouble with the heroine's lack of fortitude. She was a troubled, broken heart - which actually makes this story pretty realistic. I just wish she had more redeeming qualities - the reason Kevin fell for her, or why she deserved Zane's friendship.

I can't wait for the author's next book - I received this copy as an ARC.
