I meant to review the book 黑齒 but it’s so new that it’s not in Goodreads yet ! This is a collection of horror/supernatural/ unsettling short stories set in contemporary Hong Kong society. It weaves in everyday scenes from the pandemic with mythological and fantastical elements from ancient Chinese and Japanese folklore. I enjoyed it but definitely had to refrain from reading it by myself at night.
The other interesting observation I had was that the reading voice in my head kept switching between Cantonese and Mandarin during my reading of the book. Because of the number of conversational dialect depicted, a large fraction of the book would not make any sense when read out loud in mandarin. However, given that my reading speed is faster when the voice in my head is in Mandarin, I find myself switching incessantly between the two, which makes for a rather schizophrenic reading experience.
