KNOCK KNOCK... HE'S AT YOUR DOOR

Karen Rainey lives a sheltered life on the edge of the city. For the last five years, she has rarely left the home unless it was unavoidable. She has her food and anything else she needs delivered to the front door. She works from home to avoid venturing outside.

But Karen isn’t agoraphobic. She’s terrified of her ex-boyfriend, Zach, who is serving a life sentence in prison for a string of bank robberies after Karen testified against him. With the constant threat that Zach might send someone to find and kill her, Karen keeps a low profile.

To aid her in paying the rent each month, Karen takes in the occasional housemate, opting for students from the local university. Her current housemate, Beth, is a young student who has no idea about Karen’s past.

But when a mysterious package is left on her doorstep, it sends Karen’s world into turmoil.

Has Zack found her?

Isolated and frightened, Karen befriends Beth but refuses to tell her everything about her past.

Trapped inside their home, Karen and Beth soon begin to lose their minds.

But is the threat really outside or is it closer to home?

He's At Your Door is a must-read psychological thriller and is perfect for fans of authors like Mark Edwards, Shalini Boland and John Marrs.

HE'S AT YOUR DOOR by ALEX SINCLAIR

Karen is a Virtual Assistant, working strictly from her home. All windows are barred ... there are 4 locks on the door. She has a security camera app on her phone ... her entire property is fitted with surveillance equipment and sensors.

What is she afraid of?

Someone knows who she is ... and where she lives. She's received a package with a single sheet of paper with a note written in Latin .... Death makes us all equal.

Who is she afraid of?

She has a go-bag ready at a moment's notice. It's filled with clothing, money, a fake passport, and pepper spray. It's been in her closet for 5 years ... maybe now is the time to flee.

This is an exceptionally well written suspense. The palpable tension starts on the very first page and never lets go. There are twists and turns that I never saw coming and leading to a totally out of the blue surprising ending.

Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books for the digital copy of this extraordinary psychological suspense/thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Karen is agoraphobic, she has only left her house 3 times in the last year and then because she had no choice
She works from home as a virtual
assistant and has little contact with the outside world
But Karen isent agoraphobic, her life is her choice, but why? and why has she installed so much cctv and security in her house, what secrets is she hiding? Or trying to hide...
And who is knocking at her door?.....and leaving threats, what has she really done in her past?
All is revealed in this claustrophobic psychological thriller and of course nothing is as it seems
I found the ‘crux’ of the matter quite easy to work out and quickly ( but then I do read a fair bit 😎 ) and also couldnt stand Karen, but then you werent meant to, and you will see why!
I read this book very quickly and was pretty sure of the outcome, but on this I was wrong and it is quite a brusque and unexpected ending, more than that would give it away
An acceptably written tense book

The timeline in the book is set over a 24 hour period so as you can imagine it’s a very intense twenty-four hours. You would be surprised at exactly how much can transpire in the space of twenty-four hours, and Alex has really squeezed so much suspense, twists, and holy crap moments in there.
Girl, Have You Not Seen SE7EN?!

When Karen got the package all I could think of in my head was the famous line from the movie SE7EN when Brad Pitt shouts, “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!” If you haven’t seen that movie, I won’t spoil what is in the box, but WOAH. I felt the same when reading this.

I mean, is there really anything worse than a creepy ex? Well, yes clearly there is, a homicidal creepy, stalker ex is so much worse. It’s enough to make you want to lock your doors, change your number and delete all your social media accounts. This guy, Zach, is one warped little dude.
Let’s Not Meet

Are you a Reddit fan? If so, you’ll know this is a line used in Creepypasta subreddit’s and this is exactly what I thought of when I read this book. It really is a tale of let’s never meet, Zach.

The girl has serious security, I don’t want to give too much away as it’s 100% something you need to read, but if your like me and love books like this you make mental notes in your head of what you would do, the security you would have and so on.

You always think you know what you’d do in a situation like the one the main character Karen finds herself in, but in reality, you never do unless it happens to you (which I hope it never does) and this book really does make you think.

“Holy shhh… what if this were me?”

I didn’t want the book to end! Yet another book to add to my “to read again” list. I just wish I had all of Alex’s books as I’d 100% read them all one by one and there aren’t many authors that I can honestly say I’d do that for other than Patricia Cornwell, Lee Childs, Jeffrey Deaver, and good old Stephen King.

This is one intense and dark novel, being locked away in a house with someone unknown outside stalking you. What could be more terrifying? Karen has to lock herself away from the world, she has no choice, until one night a mysterious package turns up on her doorstep. What has turned her world even more upside down?

I have loved Sinclair’s writing since I read The day I lost you I have been obsessed with the claustrophobic feeling you have when you read his books. He’s at your door is another enclosed story just to amplify the terror that the main character feels. Stuck inside must be the worse feeling ever, especially when you control is taken away from you. Sets my teeth on edge just thinking about it.

He’s at your door is set over a 24 hour period, which is why it is so intense, so much happens! You have no time to catch your breath at any point nor does the book want to let you. From trying to find an elusive wire to the phone signal being jammed and power and water being knocked out all right at the start you do not know how this is going to end.

The story grips you from the opening pages and does not relent even at the end! I have no relief, no satisfaction but that makes this ending even more perfect. Not everything can be a happy ending.

Another book by Sinclair and another book he has just has blown me away. I adore his writing, he knows how to get into a woman’s mind and he knows how to scare his characters. I can not wait to see what is next.

What exactly could be behind someone living in a house like Fort Knox with security features, locks and planned methods of escape for if the worst should happen. After building the perfect exfiltration kit and having received a death threat Karen feels it's the right time to find a new safe space and although the concept is one that has been done to death Karen's enigmatic character carries the whole story and the mystery surrounding who she is, what she's done and who is after her and for what keep the tension piercing the pages and will have you feverishly turning the pages for answers.

It must be hell to live like this with one eye looking over your shoulder constantly. Is there an issue that the paranoia could destroy you as a person? What about family? So many questions and the answers are revealed towards the end of the book making for a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoy mystery and plentiful suspense this is one of the best I've read in recent months. You will think you know where it's heading but there are certainly some interesting moments along the way which I didn't see coming. Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC.

Firstly I really like the cover. No frills.. just what it is.. a good cover and I’m not one to comment on covers too often.

For five years Karen has locked herself away from the world as much as she can. She works from home and when she needs to she lets out a room in her house preferably to a student.

Karen has locked herself away as shes terrified of her ex boyfriend Zach who’s in prison after Karen testified against him.

When an unexpected parcel arrives life does downhill for Karen and her housemate Beth.

I found this to be a well written story that I enjoyed. I’ll certainly be looking to read more from this author in the future.

"He's At Your Door" by Alex Sinclair is a fast paced psychological thriller. The chapters are short and snappy which made me want to carry on reading 'just one more!'
The story focuses on 3 main characters - who should we trust? Who should we believe? Who should we like? and Who should we feel sorry for?......
This is a new author to me, I enjoyed the book. I tried to have as few breaks from it as possible so I could find out how the "situation" would be rectified as soon as I could!
4 stars for an entertaining and enjoyable read.

What are you afraid of?”

Karen Rainey is scared to leave her small 2 bedroomed flat, she has only left 3 times in the past 5 years….she works from home as a virtual assistant and from time to time takes a flatmate to help with bills and expenses….

She is paranoid about security and has CCTV around the property and 4 deadlocks on the door. One night there’s a knock on the door, the camera shows a man in a hoodie…..so scared she cannot think, she keeps watch until he leaves, but what was that he left behind?

A note in Latin…Omnia mors aequat….. “Death makes all equal.”

Karen’s flatmate, Beth arrives home and helps calm her down……Karen confides some of her past to her friend……but then the man comes back and is watching their home….has her ex found her….or is something darker happening?

I can’t say too much more about the actual story, but needless to say this is intense, scary and thought provoking. Revenge is sweet isn’t it ? It will make you feel better and make all right with the world again won’t it?….

I read this in one sitting due to the fast pace and incredibly immersive writing by Alex Sinclair…….it grabbed me with both hands and just wouldn’t let go until the stark, emotion packed ending…..a stunning read.

....

When I heard that Alex Sinclair was releasing another novel I was thrilled as I have read his previous books and loved them all. This book did not disappoint. He’s At Your Door is full of twists and turns, and surprises that you will not see coming. I loved how the story kept me guessing to the very end, and it was such a gripping thriller it was a pleasure to read.

Trapped in their home, Karen and Beth who are roommates slowly feel like they are truly trapped forever and cannot escape. Prisoners in their own home, with a man outside who wants to get into the house, they feel like they have no where to turn. Will they be able to escape the man that is outside their door or will he eventually get inside their home? What does the man want with them and who exactly is he?

I loved how the novel was written from Karen’s point of view and how we learned about her past that lead her to who she is today. She feels trapped in her own home, and although she isn’t agoraphobic, she does not leave her home. She orders in food, works online, and rarely ever goes outside – all due to her past and her ex Zach, who is in prison serving a life sentence. I cannot imagine living a life where you feel trapped in your own home, never to go outside.

A gripping novel, that will leave you reading page after page and guessing the whole way through.

Really enjoyed this, especially the first half which felt like a really good horror film. Second half wasn’t as good as I guessed that Steven and ‘Beth’ were related to the little boy. I thought that was quite predictable. I liked the eye for an eye premise, shame Marie died at the end I was hoping for them to realise that another death wasn’t the answer. Will def read more from this author.

This book left me wondering, are there really people this clueless in the world? If so, I feel so very sorry for them..

Next I’m moving to the ending.. after such great thought and detail went into the storyline, how can it end so abruptly?

One of the most depressing books I've ever read. Keep asking myself why I didn't give up after the first chapter, may be because I hoped it would improve, unfortunately it didn't. The main character is trully despicable.

Predictable

Overall, an ok read, but incredibly predictable. I had it figured out near the beginning of the book. Not the worst thing I’ve ever read, but can’t really recommend.

Skipped to the end

This was such a grind to read, I kept waiting for it to get good, I skipped the last bit as we knew all the players and the very likely outcome. Boring.

Nope, not for me. This was a really slow, boring book to me. I figured out the “twist” way too early. Normally, that doesn’t bother me as long as it is still entertaining. This one wasn’t.

This is a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Full of tension !!

Karen has locked herself away, in her own home, for 5 years. Everything she does is via her computer so she doesn’t have to venture out of her secure house. There are bars on her windows and five locks on her door. The only real person Karen interacts with is her lodger, student Beth. But all that is about to change.

One day a parcel arrives and within it is a letter written in Latin. Karen takes this as a threat from her ex Zach, who is in prison after Karen testified against him. But then Karen’s lifeline is cut, there is no signal on her phone and her WiFi is blocked. Things suddenly escalate and Karen finds herself in deep water, trying to protect herself and Beth from the stranger outside.

A tense fuelled read with a few twists to keep you engaged. A great book for anyone that likes psychological thrillers !!

I was thrilled to receive the ARC for this book and must say I find it an intriguing read. It is very thought provoking and made me wonder how I would react in the circumstances that the main three characters found themselves in. Karen, who has locked herself away for five years and afraid to go outside her own front door after giving evidence in a trial, is a character you may want to empathize with...I didn't. However Beth, her student housemate I warmed to in a strange way, even when she showed her true colours later in the book. An unexpected parcel left by a stranger...the same stranger keeping watch on her house....but why? It all adds to Karen's paranoia. Strange things begin to happen in the house and the two young women get scared...they need to get out, but can they escape?...and who is the man at the door? An enjoyable read with a steady flow of tension that keeps you turning the pages. A few hidden surprises with an unexpected ending.

A claustrophobic story with only five characters in total. On many levels it poses the philosophical question “What would you do?”

If you’ve never tried to walk ‘in another man’s moccasins’ this book will leave you cold. Well written and tortuous, I couldn’t say I enjoyed it. Not a ‘who dunnit’ but definitely a question of who paid the bigger price....... will stay with me for sometime.

This novel at times is not an easy read mainly due to the nature of the three main characters : you as the reader are unable to empathize with them. There are times when you feel you should however their actions and choices hold sway over you. The story overall is good and well paced and although it is set during just 24 hours, you are taken back to the reasons and events leading up to this point. It can be uncomfortable reading however in doing so challenges the reader to ask themselves what they would do in the same situation.

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the ARC to review.
