Luz Ballesteros is grappling with the reemergence of painful memories of her lost family and Senior Chief Roy Thompson is still mourning the suicide of his lover when they meet in the wild and hedonistic Subic Bay, Philippines. Against the backdrop of past tragedies and current desire, they are ensnared in a web of love, murder and espionage over one weekend.
I was stationed in Subic Bay two times over a four-year prriod. I spent some time in Sunny's on Gordon Avenue and actually lived in Barrio Barretto for about three years. I've spent many Monsoon nights in the BGU drinking by candlelight. This book reflects truly the conditions of Olongapo and the way things happened in Subic and the the Barrios. It brought back both good memories and things better left forgotten. Fleet sailors probably won't grasp the nuances but "station dito" guys will! A good read to "take you back".
I was stationed in PI during the same years as the author. A lively story kept my attention, not wanting to put the book down. All details coincide with my memories of Cubi Pt, Subic, and Olongapo liberty. BZ, well done!
I was a Special Agent with NCIS and assigned to the office at Subic Bay at the same time the author was there. If you were not there, you would not be able to relate to the interesting culture of Olongopo City and its sole purpose to exist, unlike anywhere else.
I was stationed in the Philippines a total of 6 years, plus deployed out of Subic on a couple- three ships and while stationed in Taiwan, Guam and Diego Garcia I spent my vacations there. During my earlier years I even earned a patch that said, "200 Missions Over Shit River". I spent some time in a lot of the places that Scifries mentions in the book, plus a lot of places that it appears Scifries "changed the name to protect the innocent". I've been all over Angeles City, Barrio Barretto, Subic (City) and Olongapo. Scifries' writing put me right back over there.
Having been in the Navy and in the PI it was fun to take a trip down memory lane while reading this book. Good effort for a first time writer. I think you will find it interesting with a nice little twist even if you have not been to the Philippines or were not in the Navy. Give it a try.
