Falling for the hot vampire who is responsible for the whole mess? Well, maybe.
After Isabel is sacrificed in a dark witch's circle, she doesn't believe she's dead. Her school headmistress sends her to Dead Academy, where dead and undead things roam the crypts beneath the marble halls. Isabel has to adapt to poltergeist paper tornados, cranky gargoyles, fashion-challenged vampires, and Vlad, the boy who liked her before she died and he turned undead, but now can't stand the sight or smell of her. Being sixteen has never been so tough.
When the demon inside her starts hunting down the witches who sacrificed her, it's a race to find out who killed her, again, before the demon takes over her soul and the world.
Once upon a time…
No, this isn’t that kind of story. There isn’t really a happily Ever After, because who can be happy when they’re dead, but still have to go to school? Amiright?
I wasn’t always dead. Yeah, not much better, but at least it’s factual. Let’s run with it.
I can’t wait for my daughter to get just a little older so that I can have her read this and everything else that Ms Whicker writes. It’s a beautifully written coming of age story with romance, zombies(kinda), mad scientists, vampires, and morals. What’s not to love! If you can remember your first love(it’s even more awesome if you married that guy like I did), how hard it is to grow up and how easy it is to be mean, read this and enjoy! Seriously, I have a major fan girl crush going on here. Love her books!!!!
Okay read. Could use another edit as there are still some issues. The dialogue is also all over the place, making it hard to follow at times.
For my clean readers: violence-murder, kidnapping, gore descriptions are mild, but gross nonetheless. Romance- some kissing. Language-I don't think there was any.
Isabel Dreary is a normal teen. She goes to a normal school and has a normal skating rink job and a normal cat that follows her around everywhere. She doesn't get along with her mom, her best friend likes to pump people full of formaldehyde, and there is a boy she doesn't really have her eye on. He's kinda weird, but they kinda vibe anyway. Then, one night at the rink, she takes out the trash and dies. And wakes up not breathing. In a fresh shallow grave.
Instead of going on a brain eating rampage, Isabel goes to school. And is kicked out of the school for being dead. The principal sends her to the local Dead Academy (aka Hollingshead) where the principal there informs her of her new state. Isabel makes friends with a poltergeist, frenemies with a gargoyle, and angry eye contact with a vampire.
I really liked the characters in this book, I thought they were quite interesting however I was confused for about 75% of the book. I couldn’t follow the conversations or plot at times, the flow was a little weird however it still wasn’t a DNF for me. Quite enjoyable.
If you’re looking for a heart warming dead girl story this is for you. While trying to find her killer, Izzy learns what it means to really live whether you can breathe or not. Highly recommend this cute high school romance/mystery/adventure.
One thing about all Julian Whicker novels….. they are weird, in a delightful way. Hard to predict and sometimes hard to follow, yet they still somehow captivate. I do, however, wish our protagonists weren’t always so young.
The writing could have been better. Overall it was fun to read but at one point it got really boring. It's perfect for teenagers, I think they'll enjoy it if they like the creatures of the night.
I liked this story enough, but not as much as some of the other series by this author. The premise is that a regular girl is turned into a zombie and discovers that there's a whole magic-users world under her nose that it seems nearly everyone she knows is a part of. She has to move to the dark magic school, and she discovers lots of people are vampires and witches. And that she was murdered and has a vengeance-seeking demon inside of her. It gets complicated fast. The characters are likable enough, but the story didn't quite win me over.
