All aboard! With the railroad up and running, Mason Flynt and his band of mages turn their attention to the dwarven kingdom of Orebane that lies in the frigid northern Draconis Mountains. But treacherous terrain is not all they’re up against. In order to get the dwarves to agree to their new trade agreement, Mason will have to prove his mettle against deadly cave dragons, towering ice giants, and the Master pulling the strings behind the scene. The temperatures might be dropping, but the heat is on.
Dwarves are Noble, but Don't Have Siege Weapons Shoshanne gets "fully" integrated into the team, as they continue the railroad construction heading into the Dwarven kingdom in the mountains. Eventually, they are met by the dwarves, who are initially defensive and hostile. They are doing huge construction work building in the mountains, and tunneling through some.
Expecting the Master's meddling, Mason is looking for shared enemies he can help the dwarves with, and after some negotation discovers they have been beset by ice giants. Mason helps them build ridiculously oversized trebuchets to fight the giants. Deployed in battle by inexperienced operators, they still manage to hit whatever they aim at (a bit implausible). Why not just cannons given Mason's already introduced firearms and gunpowder?
Dwarves have lots and lots of gold and gems. Literally everything seems to be made of gold and decorated with gems. Very over the top. Dwarves == pimps.
Aurora is a hero fighting ice giants (fire mage is extra goodness in the cold mountains.
Ice giants have weird icle storm attacks, and almost unlimited numbers. Eventually Mason leads the dwarves to the lair of the giants, and finds the gem channeling the Master's control over them, and destroys it.
One of the other fire mages (not part of the core group) is apparently kidnapped, but it turns out she was mind-controlled by the master and made to first sabotage the Dwarven stronghold, then come to the ice giant lair to direct the attack against Mason, the group, and the dwarves.
A lot of the second tier characters get moments to shine, for instance one of the other fire mages creates a huge fireburst in the sky that wipes out many enemies at one time.
This ice giants are vanquished, the dwarves have a big feast and give mason a powerful magic gem, and the alliance is cemented.
I can't believe I'm still continuing this series. I just realised (noticed it earlier, but it now clicked) that the protag's name is lazy and on the nose. An earth mage named Mason (someone who works with stone) Flynt (some type of rock).
This was meh. More focus is on adding new flesh to the bedsheets than the protagonist getting stronger.
I wonder where the protag is getting his gun powder from. He still hasn't found a way to use his gun without powder, even though the covers show the gun glowing like it is powered with magic.
I will read the sequel just because. I'm sure if this "Master" turns out to be a girl, he will just sleep with them and everything is forgiven.
I like how the covers tell which girls will be sidelined in the novel, by them being absent.
Prepare yourself for another action packed story from Eric Vall. Mason and his crew have fought their way through Illaria and Cedis while laying the train tracks that will unite the countries. Now they are going into the Dwarven territory of Orebane. To say that they are not welcome is to understate the case but Mason is determined to win them over. Even if it means taking on an army of Ice Giants! And don’t let’s forget about his harem! This is every man’s fantasy! I have to say that the description of the halls of the dwarves made me think of particularly gaudy casinos. 18+
Really enjoying this series, it is one that jumps to the top of my reading wait list when released. It’s a fun and sexy story, the sex has taken more of a back seat to the storyline and most sex scenes are now fading to black fairly early. The world building via train lines continues, attempting to connect the human territory with the dwarves. Throw in treacherous mountains, angry dwarves and many battles with possessed ice giants and the team has a lot to deal with in this book.
So Flint and crew make for the dwarves and end up having to help them as well. Seems the Dwarves have problems like everyone else hanDling might be the answer. Using his earth knowledge and magic to help the Dwarves may give Flint the trade and alliance he wants. Along the way he must charm his beautiful ladies and protect his friends. More of the same really. But this is why we like the series. Love the ladies and love inventive solutions. More please and soon... As usual!
Battles are won and lost, but always better on the winners side. This holds true when the humans reach out to their neighbors that are dewarves that are being attacked by monsters. It's hard to be friends with a race that gates you, yet Mason succedes where others have failed. This was fun reading about his growing Harem that was just sexy enough without being gross. Looking forward to the next installment.
3 stars, I like and dislike this series/book at the same time. Some aspect of the book I really enjoy but I just can't help but feel that this series could have been just some much better. ah... oh... well if you liked the other books I am sure you will like this one as it is pretty much the same. It was okay and I will continue with the series but I feel it will never break into a 4 star series and is even having issues getting a 3.5 now.
More action (heh) abounds in this latest foray into the Flynt landed in. New friends, new enemies, new places, more fights, more magic, and even some castle storming. All accompanied by his beautiful and talented ladies. Pure pulp fantasy harem action fiction, and great fun.
Mason and his team take the railroad into the Dwarven nation of Orebane. Here they are met with the hostility of the isolationist Dwarfs. Mason must exercise his diplomatic skills to forge a tentative alliance to fight the ice giant minions of the Master. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
I don’t like leaving these reviews because I’m not good at expressing how good the book was. I can say that I love this series. The characters are great and the way that they interact together is so much fun. I couldn’t put it down and I can’t wait for the next book.
Mason and his friends continue building the railroad and continue thwarting The Master's actions even while they try to figure out what he is really up to. This is an excellent continuation of this story.
I appreciate the fact that this series keeps chugging g forward with one revelation after another. The characters are well rounded and I'm excited to see where the story takes me. Keep it coming.
This is more about the world than the magic which was a nice change. This is a good book. You should read it. I like the story. The characters are fun. I like the harem addition
I enjoyed reading this book although for some reason not as much as the previous books in the series. I hate to admit it but I almost got a little bored about three quarters through the story, just when the climactic battle with the ice giants started.
Another good edition to the series but I can’t help but wonder why he isn’t magnetoing these beasts. Looking forward to the water, light, and Or dark harem member to make an entrance next book.
Building upon the characters and lore from the prior books we have a great addition to the series and I cant wait for the next book. Keep up the great work!
When the majority of authors seem to be attempting to outdo one another with gritty, dark, and devious; Eric Vall's series are a nice enjoyable alternative. Worth buying to read and maybe re-read.
The story continues. The plot continues to expand. The story does harem elements and adult situations. I enjoyed the story and reading straight through the available books (currently book #10).
This series is going string so far. Although I would have liked for a little more sex and a little less about the Ice Giants. Please put a picture Shoshashon on the cover. She sounds beautiful.
Overall the book was good but it did not grab my attention like the previous book did. It was good with decent pacing and the action scenes are fun to read.
This is such a good continuation. The story flows together spectacularly and each character, main and side, is well fleshed out. I’m looking forward to book 5.
The whole dwarves history got me super engaged from the beginning to the end, I’ve been catching up with the books and I plan to continue with the next.
If they removed all the cringy harem stuff this would be a great book series. Unfortunately large parts of it reads like it's written by a horny 12 year old..
If you’ve read the first 3 books then you know how good this series is. Book 4 is even better. Can’t wait to see what happens in Nalnora when Mason and crew meet the elves!!
