Images of Reflections Inspired by Lilias Trotter goes beyond the biographical facts of Lilias's life-Victorian-era artist, protege of John Ruskin, ground-breaking social worker, missionary to Algeria, inspirational author-to ponder the deeper meaning of her life. Some 60 devotional reflections start with a short Trotter quotation, often selected from unpublished diaries, and a full-color Trotter watercolor. Miriam Rockness-who as biographer has lived and breathed and absorbed the world and mind-set of Lilias for the past thirty years-then shares contemporary-life reflections that complement and match the spiritual insights of Lilias herself. This expanded (volumes 1 & 2) edition of Images of Faith is newly designed for easy devotional access and features additional content, opening vistas to Images of ...Joy, God, Redemption,Spiritual Growth, Prayer, Service, Refreshment, and Faith. A spirit-inspiring read for Lilias admirers and a compelling introduction for those who have not yet made her acquaintance. Here you'll find profound devotional reflections that bridge our "now" with Lilias Trotter's timeless art and classic spiritual insights.
I have read many devotionals through the years in conjunction with the Bible. This one is the best of all of them. I first heard of Lilias Trotter when I bought my granddaughter the children's book about her: Lily: The Girl Who Could See by Sally Oxley, Tim Ladwig with Miriam Huffman Rockness. While waiting for it to arrive, I watched the movie/documentary about Lilias Trotter's life Many Beautiful Things(2015)(You can view it free on YouTube). Miriam Huffman Rockness is integral to the film and all the research on the late artist and missionary's life. The Lord spoke an urgency and determination to Miriam's heart in preserving the legacy of Lilias Trotter. Without Mrs. Rockness, I believe Lilias Trotter's art, journals, and mission work would have lingered and disappeared into relative obscurity. God made Lilias Trotter special and she lived her life for His glory and service. After watching the film, I downloaded Lilias Trotter's Parables of the Cross on Kindle. I loved it, but the kindle version didn't contain the artwork she'd completed to go with this book. Her art and her words go hand-in-hand. It left me wanting something with both. I decided to order this devotional. This is a triple blessing! It has excerpts from Lilias' journals and writings plus her artwork at the start of each devotional plus a daily devotional inspired by these. Miriam Huffman Rockness brings application to today and ties it to her own life of service. I know Lilias and Miriam will have great talks in eternity. Thank goodness we still have Miriam. I will be reading more of the books the Lilias Trotter Legacy group makes available.
I loved this book. I read it slowly like a devotional soaking in the truths about which Lilias Trotter was inspired to write and sketch. Miriam Rockness shares how Lilias’ impressions impacted her life and writes out what she learned. It’s a great lesson in meditating on what you’re reading to squeeze out all the good in it. Honestly, I didn’t want this book to end. I enjoyed every chapter. The sketches are beautiful too!
