The Hellennium #2

Spartan Beast

Rate this book
The war between Athens and Sparta is over.

But not for Demosthenes of Athens, who has but one purpose: kill every Spartan. In his possession is a weapon that might achieve it, the living, unstable weapon which fell from the stars, Thalassia. At present, she lies dead, but that is sure to change. Demosthenes will need her help, for Sparta has a weapon just as deadly in the form of Eris, the white witch who takes her name, not without reason, from the war-god's slaughter-loving sister.

The Hellennium takes place in an ancient world depicted with brutal realism, weaving threads of cosmic SF into bloody and graphic historical fiction.  At the heart of the series is the ever-evolving, dysfunctional relationship between Demosthenes and Thalassia, whose 'anti-romance' is destined to leave a trail of slaughter and ruin down the centuries.

If you're a fan of David Drake's Northworld series, or Gene Wolfe's Soldier series, you'll want to join Demosthenes and Thalassia as they cut a bloody path of destruction through the ancient world. Frequent readers of David Weber, David Gemmell, Michael Moorcock, and even Bernard Cornwell have also found much to love.

A Smashing Success

P.K. Lentz follows up the incredible Athenian Steel with this superbly exciting, unpredictable and savage tale of ancient Greece under the influence of two individuals from the far distant future, trapped in our world. Watch Athens and Sparta transform into something you wouldn't recognize, and our history along with it. What an amazing adventure - like Northworld in the Peloponnese on steroids. Too much fun to read fast.

Demosthenes, former General of Athens and Geneva / Thalassia, enhanced human are planning on annihilating Sparta in vengeance for killing Demosthenes' wife, Laonoame. On the opposing side, Brasidas, Polemarch of Sparta uses Eden's / Eris' knowledge to slowly conquer Greece, but he battles political enemies inside Sparta reluctant to change which might be the bigger challenge.

Between the sneak attacks, new technology, combat, revolts, assassinations, duels, battles, slaughter, vengeance and basic violence this is just one of the ways this book can be enjoyed: ancient military battles, strategy and tactics with a twist.

Just think what would happen if two antagonistic advanced humans from our far future landed back in the Cradle of Civilization. How much damage could they cause? What would it do to the development of human society, art, technology, culture, history? It would blast everything to smithereens, but what's left after the carpet bombing is in the capable hands of Mr. Lentz and that's what's in these books. Messin' with Greece.

Note for Readers: As some of you are squeamish, there is both GORE and SEX in the story - quite a bit of both. It is not gratuitous, but it does make this an 18+ book.

Note for Author: Should the title been plural? I can think of more than one candidate. Two thumbs up on the epilogues. Love Malcolm and Sav. The wolves were teasing.

If you want to start a series that will start you looking up historic facts about not only Ancient Greece, but their neighbors, their enemies and simply having flights of fancy how history could change, THEN READ THIS SERIES.

Highly Recommended by 5 out 4 Readers!.

The sequel is even better than the original. P.K Lentz really unpacks the details and shows us a rollicking good adventure and a heart warming love story with plenty of sex and gore.

In this episode Demosthenes, former general of defeated Athens and Thalassia, enhanced human from another time and dimension, work towards annihilating Sparta in vengeance for killing Demosthenes' wife, Laonoame. On the opposing side, general Brasidas, uses Eris (Thallasia's former star ship crew-mate and now nemesis) as a weapon to overthrow the traditional Spartan establishment and slowly conquer Greece.

Lentz treats us to political intrigue, assassinations, beach sex, hoplites battling with both conventional and advanced weaponry, visits to brothels, skulduggery, double crosses, naval warfare and special operations on a roller coaster-like ride to a smashing conclusion.

Some may also enjoy the way the relationship between Thalassia and Demosthenes evolves beyond the love-hate we see in Athenian Steel. The trash talk between Demosthenes and Brasidas is good as well.

"You are a small man, Demosthenes. You have no vision. She is wasted on you!”

“If by vision you mean the desire to control the destinies of others, then you are right, I lack it,” Demosthenes answered...." I wanted only peace and happiness. You took them from me.”

Demosthenes might not have been happy, but you will be if you pick up this book.

The story was well written and exciting to the end.

Checked back in to the Hellennium weirdness to see how Demonsthenes and the crew fared after the fall of Athens. Perhaps a bit too much science in the balance compared to the fine mix of history, science and sex in the first book, but it didn't lack for slaughter; including half the main characters, so there is that. Some really fine characters too, the guys and gals that get hacked are not one dimensional, even the black-helms.

Perfect reading when in confinement, be transported in a great Spartanian war 400 BC!

Time traveling scenario, immortal life, women strength, cavalry, an Athenians landscape. An ending of peace and thruce and a United country could have been an alternative scenario.

Keeps your attention

Good book, nothing deep but it's engaging and fun to read. I wish they would allow half stars or I would have given it 4.5.

This sequel to Athenian Steel continues the alternative history of Greece's Peloponnesian War period driven by two multiverse refugees. No shortage of action and political intrigue.
