Tyche Forever

Rate this book
When someone kills your buddy, it's time for a road trip.

October Kohl no longer captains the Emperor's Black. He's spent his time since the war drinking whiskey. When a courier arrives carrying a message from an old friend, he knows it's time to saddle up. The AI Algernon joins him.

What they find defies belief: an ever-young crew aboard an ancient starship. The Immortal carries a dark secret. The Ezeroc have a new weapon: they offer us life eternal.

Kohl and Algernon race across the stars in a borrowed starship. Empire Navy insurgents working with the Ezeroc stand in their way. If they can't find the Ezeroc's forever-young technology, humanity will surrender to the enemy willingly.

October Kohl's faced worse odds. He's never done it sober.

Richard Parry has worked as a senior marketing manager in one of the world’s top tech companies, but it wasn't all cocaine parties. His debut novel Night’s Favor and its sequel Night’s Fall have been shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award “Best Novel” category.

His ever-growing list of novels spans urban fantasy, cyberpunk, and space opera, featuring flawed heroes, sharp dialogue, and a healthy dose of action. His Night’s Champion trilogy follows an alcoholic-turned-werewolf saving the world, while Future Forfeit explores a neon-drenched cyberpunk future where hacking the system is just the start. Meanwhile, Ezeroc Wars throws readers into the deep end of an interstellar war against a swarm species that doesn’t take no for an answer. Across over 20 novels (and counting), Richard delivers stories packed with heart, explosions, and the occasional bad decision.

Richard lives in Wellington with the love of his life, Rae. They have cats, who chase birds. The birds, who have the power of flight, don’t seem to mind.

“You’re delivered from the womb naked and screaming, and it doesn’t get better from there.”
“I have met the most beautiful things in all creation, and they are human.”
I missed Tyche and her crew! What an amazing and exciting road trip with Al and Kohl! Tyche Forever joins an ensemble cast facing immeasurable obstacles, combining elements of different sci-fi subgenres, from space opera to hard Sci fi, add a dash of mystery and intrigue and you get an explosive pack, overwhelming, action packed, fast paced, no respite and gruesome fights with the Ezeroc(these aliens I didn’t miss, lol).
The writing in this book is excellent, with fantastic setting descriptions, clever dialog, and some unexpectedly profound observations about humanity. An Excellent and fantastic read, as always with Richard Parry!

This was one outstanding scifi story that grips you and makes you want more. The characters are something else. Loved it

Killer aliens, augmented super-soldiers, and sarcastic A.I.s. Despite the near overwhelming risk of pastiche fatigue, this was a fun book to read. Parry did a good job of balancing the whole mess and gave us a solid first book in the series.

It's a gas to read, and I won't risk spoiling anything for anyone else. Grab a copy as soon as you can.

Review of Tyche Forever - An Ezeroc Wars Story by Richard Parry

Latest book of space opera series with humans and AIs searching for the downside of the fountain of youth - 4 stars

I had trouble sorting out the characters by name but still turned pages quickly.

This was a knock-em, sock-em fighting adventures with the humans being considered "meat socks" by the AIs. Humans were the preferred food of the alien Ezerocs.

Starting in a bombed out San Francisco church, a message gets through that October Kohl is needed to rescue his sometime friend, Shig Ishikawa, on some not-yet charted outpost in the galaxy.

The first of many ion blaster shootings takes place in the church so you know that nothing is sacred and life is cheap.

Tyche Forever is a fun romp for the reader but tough on the characters.

While there is a way to shed years of age, it does not seem to add to the life expectancy.

There are at least five more books in Richard Parry's series. Buckle up.

This is without a doubt one of the very best Tyche series stories, if not the best sci-fi of its kind period, that I’ve ever read.
The author, Richard Parry, continues to excel in his world building, character exploits, action sequences and all around technical believe-ability.
This does take place far in the future so the weapon systems, the navigation and engineering are superb in the story’s context which doesn’t make the reader suspend his belief.
That terminology has recently surfaced (within the last year) and I hate it. Suspension of disbelief or something like that. Hogwash! Either you like something or not. Are you not entertained? If not then find something else to do.
Anyway, the characters we’ve grown up with throughout the Tyche universe continues to impress.
It’s not all roses though as there are times I personally wanted to either choke the author or cry or both.
This tale had everything I’ve grown to expect from Mr. Parry’s imagination and even more.
The enemy has evolved to the point where I really thought this would be the last book and it still could be, but our beloved characters have evolved also, just not all of them and maybe not enough. I honestly question how the human species will survive in the end. Tyche’s crew got their asses kicked. When I say asses, I’m talking about mules Amazon....
There’s still so much more that can be told in this long running series and I for one hope Mr. Parry decides to continue to ultra-entertain us with more, much much more.
I can’t talk anymore in any detail about this particular story without possibly giving away even more spoilers than I might have already. I don’t think I have, but....
Let me just say that I can’t imagine not having a Parry book to read in this current timeline and onward.
But since there’s going to be an obvious downtime lag here then I’m certainly going to head over and start reading his brand new six book YA Tyche series. It’s about the main protagonist’s backgrounds, when and where they grew up, etc.
I know they’ll all be excellent books and I’m sure I’ll enjoy them, but I personally, honestly need more of the current conflict also.
There, I’ve said it. Now I only hope Mr. Parry reads my wishes and takes them to heart, even in light of the fact that there are thieves out there that have brought plagiarism to light for many authors and have hurt the industry, especially the wonderful indie authors. Okay, I’ve said my piece on that issue.
(But something should be done about it!)

Mr. Parry never ceases to amaze me with his intellect, imagination and humor. He’s truly an artist at what he does.
Even though we’ve never met in person, I consider him a good friend. We’ve known each other for years now, all because I decided to one day pick up one of his stories to read, his original million page “Upgrade”, now a part of one of his other superb series, the future forfeit series. (it’s not really a million pages, but it was rather long, but I liked it that way. Who isn’t sad when an excellent book comes to an end? The original had a lot of love to give!)
He’s since remastered “Upgrade” and made it so much better along with a whole new cyberpunk series around it, but that’s a whole other rant, but believe me, it’s equally excellent.

I will end this with saying I simply don’t have the vocabulary to describe how good Mr. Parry is at writing science fiction.
If action, great characters, Starship’s, battles, aliens, fantasy and so much more is your bag, then you owe yourself to read Tyche’s entire universe.
This particular story just upped the ante, that’s all and that’s saying a lot.
Thank you Richard for your continued excellence!

Awesome road trip with Kohl and Al! I so enjoy the exploits of the Tyche crew, whether together or individually. I felt all the anxiety and adrenaline of our friends whilst reading this book. The action kept me on the edge of my seat. Had to read it straight through, as I could not put it down. I eagerly await the next part of this adventure! Note to self: Head on a swivel; Remember to look UPWARD!

*I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

On one meat hand, you don’t really need to know about the previous Ezeroc Wars novels in order to enjoy this story: it is sheer adrenaline action and cynical badassery; lasers and space battles; alien face-huggers and hi-tech enhancements. On the other prosthetic hand, there is clearly a ton of backstory with these characters and this universe and it seems daft not to fill yourself in on it before embarking on the latest adventure. With this in mind I have added the author’s recommended reading order graphic to the bottom of this post.

The story starts with October Kohl, drunken grumpy arsehole on a reluctant rescue mission. As the plot unfolds, Kohl accrues a motley band of angry, sarcastic and/or bravely terrified teammates and together they kick arse across the cosmos, sending traitors to the Empire and Ezeroc roaches scuttling for cover. Well, not really. In fact they mostly attack and try to kill them. But in a world of nanite technology, high-powered prosthetics and super-I AI, even death can be up for debate!

It was a bit hard to get much of a feel for the ‘meat sock’ characters as they were in perpetual battle-motion for most of the story and therefore lots of action and not much time for heart-to-hearts. I’m guessing that, as recurring characters in the series, a lot of character development has happened in previous story arcs and I’m just late to the space party.

In contrast, I immediately loved Algernon (the AI) and the sections seen from his point of view were my favourites. He has such a distinct voice and mode of thought, and the author has really captured a fascinating blend of affection and detachment that makes for an entertaining and unpredictable character.

I recommend the Tyche/Ezeroc series for anyone who loves space rogues, alien invasions and laser battles. That… that’s everyone, right?!

This here’s a perfect opportunity. Kohl found his balance, then roared, charging her. Her eyes widened and she brought the knife up in her meat hand. Kohl slammed it aside, slugged her across the jaw, and wore a staggering haymaker from her metal arm for his troubles. She swapped the knife to her prosthetic arm. He narrowly missed being eviscerated as she swung for his stomach. He blocked a second strike with his rifle, the blade lodging in the battery. Electricity arced to her metal arm, but she grinned like it didn’t matter.

Ezeroc and August and Algernon, oh my!

Temporarily allowing two characters who have not had a lot of prime time coverage in the earlier Ezeroc Wars novels, and giving Tyche’s main characters a chance to catch their breath, this one feels both fresh and familiar at the same time.
Chad Forradel is a spymaster for the Empire, who has had better days (albeit not all that many). Saveria Complex has a backstory that requires that the reader has a good memory for keeping track of a large number of references not exactly rife with details about how she has come to be in this current setting.
As the second instalment in the three-part Tyche’s Fallen component of the Ezeroc Wars, it provides additional pieces to the puzzle that started with Tyche Lost, and hopefully, will be resolved in Tyche’s Crusade, which I have ready and waiting on my Kindle.

October is an ass, Al is sarcastic and a little naïve, together they are awesome.

October is 100% convinced he's 1000% better at killing bugs than anyone else, this series may well prove whether he's right or bug food, either way its an awesome start to an awesome sequel to an already awesome series.

I haven't read one of Richards books I haven't loved this is no exception, but the wait for the next one may kill me.

But the quicker you buy it the quicker he'll write the next one for me so come on hurry up and just buy it, you know you want too.

The brilliance continues

The war may have ended, or maybe not, but the adventure continues with the same brilliance. More character development and more action, keep this wild ride going. Is it a trap and if so, for who?

This is a fabulous series of books and each one is different to the last so no chance of getting bored by repeated storylines as with so many series. New characters in this one to love, or hate, and plenty of things to keep you wanting to read to the end.
