The Amplifier Protocol

They called me an amplifier. And they had bred me, raised me, and trained me to be a killer with preternatural precision. I was capable of taking, holding, and transferring power that wasn’t my own with a simple touch. Skin-to-skin contact. Along with four others of my generation, I could infiltrate any magical organization, extracting whoever or whatever I’d been ordered to extricate. Then I could destroy all evidence of our passing presence. They had made me. They directed me. Controlled me.Then they tried to kill me.-----------------The Amplifier Protocol by Meghan Ciana Doidge is the prequel novella (40k) for the Amplifier series, which is set in the Adept Universe along with the Dowser, the Oracle, and the Reconstructionist series. I'm reading the books of the Adept Universe in the right order which means I have read quite a few already (and liked them) before reaching the Amplifier Protocol. This one was a massive disappointment for me.
I found the mass of character names rather confusing and couldn't get into the story.
The main character is very unlikeable for me and I struggled to keep up with her because I was just not interested in what she had to say.
The author keeps repeating herself over and over. The whole thing could have been a ten page character introduction and not a whole novella. I actually regret having spent money on this.

But because I liked her other books, especially the oracle series, I'm hoping the next book in line will make me change my mind about the Amplifier.

I hate giving bad reviews on books. I really do. But I couldn't get my heart around the Amplifier Protocol, I disliked every chapter except the last 2. I found it to have too many words without getting to the point. In fact, I skipped a number of the middle chapters and didn't miss a thing.

I will not be continuing with this series. That being said - I absolutely love EVERYTHING else Ms. Doidge has written, and will not give up on her other series.

This new series is promising to be outstanding! Unlike most authors who write multiple series in the same genre, MCD is able to give these characters a completely different tone and texture than her previous series' making them wholly unique. That's a talent all in its own.

This prequel is excellent with action right from page one. I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Prequel novella to Diodge's new Amplifier trilogy. This is a MUST READ before reading book 1. Book 1 of the trilogy starts 7ish years after this one ends, but this provides the complete back story of the major players in the new series. It's awesome and has me crazy excited for the new Amplifier books.

I received this, along with title .5, in a giveaway from the author.

This new series is set in the same world as Ms. Doidge's books about Jade - but that was not easy to discern for much of this one, because the very narrow world in which our protagonist lives wasn't structured in the same way, or filled with the same types of people. Little by little we are allowed to see that it is the same world - but that this world now (apparently rather suddenly, to the reader) a whole new Nemesis. It is not difficult to assume that the characters in the Jade stories will eventually morph into something that fights this new-found enemy that apparently existed all along, we just didn't know about it.

(I haven't read the very last Jade story. Perhaps it mentions this "new" evil)

I found this one hard to get into, and the protagonist hard to like. I found the slaughter somewhat gratuitous, which is unfortunate because it bores me. Included in the version I was given is the .5 title as well, which I may like better when I get around to reading it.

I got this free from Amazon quite some time ago and never got around to it.

After a slew disappointing zombie books that all ended up in the DNF pile I thought of this one as a possible pallate cleanser and I'm glad I went for this.

This novella felt almost less like a novella and more like a whole book, not as much in the amount of pages but story wise.

Socks was a very interesting character, her feelings and the way her powers shaped her view of the world around her fascinating since she's not been all that exposed to the real world but kept like a dog in a kennel.

Despite that she has shaped her own morality, helped by her empathy and it makes for a good read and a great intro into a series.

This got me hooked so I'll be reading the rest of the series asap.

Boring

I couldn't even finish the first chapter. To much description and it seemed so jumbled. Not a fan of war stuff and this book I wouldn't recommend at all unless you want to to to sleep.

Update: I did finally finish this book. And honestly, I thought that amplifier 0.5 was so much better. It was actually a story instead of a bunch of backstory rammed into an escape. Amplifier 0.5 concentrated on Emma and Christopher who are Amp5 and Cla5. The pace of this novelette was much more relaxed, and more of a cozy mystery feel than the chaos of amplifier 0.

Amplifier 0 did get better in the last two chapters.

I’m at 31% of the way through and I just don’t know if I wanna keep reading this. It is so tedious and heavy with the details and low on action/plot advancement. The entire first chapter was a rescue/battle scene where there was a demon and everyone either got injured or killed or betrayed. Then the entire chapter 2 was her waking up in a room and basically just gave a rundown of her injuries and her slow tedious recovery. Then chapter 3 was an annoying telepathic communication with her team, where basically nothing is still happening. Looks like in chapter 4, she’s about to break out of the room, but I just I don’t even know if I can keep reading. Everything that the character thinks is an info dump because it is massively explaining all the abilities of all the characters anytime something happens and is so bogging the flow of the story down that my brain just wants to implode. And the character just seems like an annoying know it all, the way she explains everything. And I’ve also grown tired about how an ability or thing is explained but then there’s a caveat, a but… And she explains something contrary that will get them out of the situation or explain a way how they’re magically able to do something they shouldn’t have been able to do.

Note: #0 and #0.5 bundle

The team was engineered for speed, strength, healing, and intelligence. They were named Cla5, Amp5, Nul5, Tel5, and Tek5. All five had a five as part of their name as they were the fifth generation. The three letters were short for their dominant magical abilities. They were a team that did the Collective’s tasks.

I liked this book. A nice blending of science and fantasy. The science is a little stretched, but nowadays, it is closer to reality than fiction. The fantasy described is wonderfully written. Not having read this setting before and understanding that this is not the only series based upon this setting makes me want to read this and the other series. It is just a shame the team had to break up.

0.5
Emma Johnson, AKA Socks, AKA Amp5, the leader of the team, and Christopher, AKA Knox, AKA Cla5, had traveled together and finally ended up in a small town in Canada. A place they wanted to call home. A place to call home, but they needed to be active in the community to become a part of the community. A community that so far did not trust the duo because they had been secluded, but then local RMCP, Officer Reynolds, a female shifter, asked for their help in finding a mundane.

For those who like Urban Fantasy or Paranormal novels, will like these reads. I give each prequel (0, 0.5) five stars out of five stars.

This is a pretty big departure from my much happier, snarkier characters from the Dowser universe. As a set up, I hope we get somewhere... else when the series begins "for real."

We start this journey (which includes book 0 and short story 0.5) with a bunch of no-name, genetically engineered adepts who are essentially different strike teams. While the teams are made up of some "regular" adepts, there is a group of "special" ones that are generally just weapons. Things go bad (as they often do) and the order of things gets... blown up. Pretty literally.

I found it kind of hard to identify with any of the characters in the first story (book 0). While book 0.5 gave them a little more humanity, I think I'm going to take a breather between this and book 1. Book 0.5 had a bit more of a murder mystery feel. There's adepts plus the super duper ones and they are forced to navigate the mundane world where I'm slightly more comfortable. I liked the end result, but I really did not like Emma. We'll see where she heads in future installments, because I am absolutely allergic to quitting a series.

If you like UF, you will love this book!

I absolutely loved this book! As the start of a new series, I have to say it rocked! Emma is a deeply flawed chitchat is doing the best she can with what she has. She was born to be a weapon and she's quite a scary one, but even she knows that there is something wrong with the way she and the others in her group were raised. I don't want to give spoilers, so I won't get into the plot, but it was an adrenaline rush getting through Amp 0. Amp 0.5 is included and it shows just what an amazing series this is going to be. I can't wait for her next story in this series!

I read all of Doidge's other books (in the Dowser universe) before starting The Amplifier series. I was turned off by three things - these books didn't seem to share any characters with the other series, I didn't like the sexy covers, and every other main character had redeeming qualifies and something that was appealing. How can we get to know and like "Amp5?"
The answer... keep reading. Now that I'm halfway through the Amplifier series I am in love with these books. I'm going to rate them by how much I enjoyed each particular book, and I didn't like this prequel very much, but it's short and worth the effort.

This was a very fast paced book with completely different characters and settings than the Dowser series. Even though it was listed as an extension of that series, it really is not related. There were maybe one or two very vague references within this series and it would have been better to list as a stand-alone series to prevent confusion for the reader. It took me a full book and a half of this series to realize this series is not going to tie in to that ... a bit disappointing.

But read as a stand-alone series, it is good! Lots of action, some surprises, emotion. Its all there.

A very different adept story.

This was a novella and short story setting up a new series by Meghan Diana Doidge. It starts with how Emma came into existence, she and four others were created and used because of the strength of their magic. The novella tells how they escaped and the short story tells how Emma and Christopher came to live in their home in Canada and become part of the community. This is a very different kind of adept, I am excited to see where these characters are going and if they will meet the adepts of Vancouver. On to the next book.

Although this was, in parts, an exciting story it was also very difficult to follow. This was because the characters had effectively 3 different names - a forename, a surname, and a laboratory name. The laboratory name was something like Cla5 for the clairvoyant on the team. These latter names are used in the first few pages of the story without reference to "real" names, and as the real and laboratory names are used interchangeably in the same sections of the book, the story became very confusing in parts.

Each time we start a new series in this world, it is a jarring experience. Now we find a group of engineered beings, created as a team to do the bidding of a nefarious council. But they didn't count on the bonds between the Five or their ability to fight in their self interest. Once they escape and go their separate ways, Emma and Christopher find a new life away from violence. But can they continue to live in peace.

This series is a part of the Dowser world, but we don't see much of it in this book. There are plenty of completely new challenges to keep these characters busy.

Really enjoyed

I'm surprised by how much I loved this story. I read one other book by this author and really didn't like it. I didn't have high hopes for this second try of same author. But I ended up loving this story. I loved how strong the fmc is. I love the relationship btn the fmc and Christopher. I love the relationship of the five and their experiences in an intense battls. And the way we could easily measure the growth of the fmc via a time passed plot device. Loved. Definitely won't hesitate to read this author again.

Ooo! New Characters!

The joy and excitement of meeting new characters from Meghan Ciana Doidge is perfection. Each character is brought to life so sweetly that when one dies, he is missed. But these characters are so rich and real, the reader wants to meet them, join in their adventures. And when Meghan introduces new characters, the magic begins again! Can't wait to read more!

This new series will be a challenge, since it introduces an entirely new cast of characters, who operate quite differently than we have seen before, and at a very accelerated pace. Not only do these characters seem disconnected from each other, (allies one day, adversaries the next), they seem able to disconnect from their own emotions as well. To the point that this is the most unlikable cast, with the possible exception of Christopher, that the author has ever introduced.

Powerful Backstory to the Series

This moderately short story provides a powerful introduction to the The Five. The story is packed with action and character development. The world view develops along with the story.

The protagonists are troubled and interesting. You grow invested in their future and their attempts to find out who they are and to gain their freedom.

I look forward to the rest of the series.

I haven't read any books in this world so I was clueless. Started Deamons & DNA and was completely lost until one of the reviews recommended to start with this. Annoying that it's not mentioned anywhere. This book consists of two parts - the first one is verrrryyy violent and I didn't really like it. It explains the world to some extent, but not enough, and I'm sorry I didn't start with previous series in this world. The second part was much better and I actually started liking the MC.

Very absorbing book with really imaginative writing, fantasy and magic plus science fiction all in one package. The main character who is now Emma is really good and you can only empathise with her as you read your way through the events that lead up to the freedom of the five. Having destroyed their prison and split up she is now free to pursue her life with Christopher as her brother and their demon dog Paisley. Engrossing and entertaining throughout and well worth reading.

3.5⭐️

This series is part of a longer series called the Adept Universe. I tried reading it chronologically but have failed both times I have started. Bit I was more intrigued by this book. So I went ahead and started on this book and I loved it. Though there are a lot of parts unexplained, obviously because they will be as the series goes along, I quite enjoyed this prequel to the actual story. I liked knowing where our main characters come from and am looking forward to their adventures.

Good read

I enjoyed this book the characters were interesting and it was a nice easy read. I used it waiting at school and to pick up and put down throughout my day.
I liked the premise and the whole idea of the team of killers born and trained for one purpose.will be buying more in the series.

The Amplifier Protocol

Wolverine came to mind as I read these two prequels. The DNA manipulation, the absolute control required to keep not only one, but five creations both in control and ignorant. Finally, the death they wielded at the command of their creators until they were no longer “needed”.

I really enjoyed this story but made the mistake of listening to the audiobook. It took me 5 attempts to get through it as the narrator made the choice to use a low, mostly monotone voice for the main character. I kept drifting off and having to restart. Will read rather than listen to the rest of the series.

This book is a prequel to the series and shows us how the team was formed and how they broke free of the Collective. It was very interesting to see their beginnings. I love the way MCD weaves a story. She puts so much thought and effort into her characters. If I have yet to convince you to start her series, then I’m failing at my task here.

This book is finally very different from other adept universe books and right now not sure it’s caught my attention to continue the series if it doesn’t lead into the other characters. I understand not wanting to sound the same all the time but also I feel readers enjoy specific authors for a reason so we shall see. I already have books 1 and 2 so might as well check them out
