Fresh from adventure and fed up with the Rooks' company, Twist and his friends break off into the world together, self-sufficient and unfettered. Freedom, however, comes with its own risks and now an old enemy is close on their heals.

After learning some quite startling information about his own past, Twist now finds himself struggling to accept the knowledge that evil fairies not only exist, but that they are after his personal ruin. So far, Twist's and Jonas's magical charms have been able to hide them from their enemies, but now the fairies are magically listening to everything said on Earth, waiting for anyone to accidentally reveal Twist or Jonas to them.

The Rooks can offer them no protection, and Aden has proven himself untrustworthy. And so, Twist and his friends have chosen to strike out alone. All of them now carry fairy invisibility charms, and Kima’s son Pahmut is well acquainted with the magic of the fae. The only question now is whether they truly can protect themselves, or not.

Twist and his companions will need to rely on each other through this difficult time, and build a life that they can sustain. Travel with them as they venture forth, and find out first hand if they can survive, yet again.

Book 9 and I find myself as enthralled by this steampunk adventure story as I was at the start. I love the characters of Twist, Jonas and Myra and this time round after escaping from both the land of fairy and the hands of the Rooks they are looking forward to some downtime, however they soon discover this is not to be, as they embark on yet another scary adventure, this time traveling in their own air machine which Myra bought for them using her magically enhanced purse. They took on Quay their old time enemy, who had tried a couple of times to sell Myra, the clockwork princess, and soon to be Twist's bride to others. Jonas takes pity on the man who had been his previous captain, and who had taught him much about pirating, when he finds him drunk and all alone. Traveling also with them is Kima and her son Pahmut, who they had saved from the land of the winter fae. Now they find out they are once again being persecuted by Storm, the satyr who had taken the place of Pahmut for so many years, with the intent of serving his dead master by killing Twist and Jonas together to bring his master Jack Frost back. They travel wearing the invisibility charms the gypsy mama had made for them, yet Storm could still find them traveling through their dreams. This was a most scary and intense book, I love that Jonas is changing, it seems that Twist is having this effect on him. I also love that he and Arabel, his sister get better acquainted and leave each other on better terms this time round. I cannot wait to continue reading what must be my very favourite series this year and cannot recommend this highly enough. Reading this is sheer pleasure.

Just a fun yarn

Emily Thomson creates a fantasy world that brings you in a little at a time, as you accept magic, dragons, genies, satyrs, fairies, like they are an everyday occurrence. Throw in the steampunk overlay and she keeps me anticipating what will happen as I turn the page.
