Temporary Insanity

Rate this book
Sleeping with the enemy never felt so good.
When Paul Davenport comes face to face with the man he caught in bed with his boyfriend years before, it's hate at first sight. Well, second sight. Indy should be apologizing, not flirting. Except the gorgeous barman is completely oblivious to their paths ever having crossed before.

Despite his feelings, Paul's powerless to resist the full-on charm offensive that follows. It's fine though. It's just sex. No emotions. No getting to know each other. Just a bout of temporary insanity that's sure to run its course once the simmering passion starts to wear off.

Only what if it's not? Indy's nothing like the man Paul expected him to be from his past actions. What if they're perfect for each other and Paul's just too stubborn to see it? Forging a relationship with him would require an emotional U-turn Paul might not be capable of making.

There's a thin line between love and hate, and Paul's about to discover just how thin it really is. He can't possibly be falling for the man that ruined his life. Can he?

Warning: This book contains hate sex—sort of, lots of banter, and a pink elephant. No, really it does. Actually, two elephants.

Please note: Although this book is in the Temporary series, it occurs during the same timeline as A Temporary Situation. Therefore, both books can be read as standalones and in any order.

What a good read! The author does a great job of playing up the push me pull you aspect of the story. Paul shouldn’t be attracted to the man he caught in bed with his boyfriend years ago, but he is, no matter how much he tries to deny it. But the barman doesn’t remember their paths ever crossing before which is another source of irritation for Paul. What follows is a funny story that has the guys eventually in each other’s arms but what a great journey they take to get there. Temporary Insanity is such an apt title. Paul is irrational and not thinking straight, but for me, that added to the humour. And isn’t it true that in life, you do occasionally do stupid things, think stupid thoughts? I felt very sorry for Indy who was a saint to put up with all Paul’s crap. As an example of a story where you want to bang heads together but only because the author led you in that direction, this was perfect! There are laugh out loud moments, great character development and a rip-roaring pace. I really enjoyed it.

Fun book, I enjoyed it!

So you do not have to read the first book in order to read this one - although it did make me want to read book 1 anyway ;)

So this takes place around the same time as book 1, and for Paul it has been 3 years since he caught his now ex in bed with another man, said other man who just so happens to now be working in the bar that Paul frequents because it is near his work.

Paul instantly hates Indy, and it is understandable at first, and even after awhile. And yes, Indy was telling the truth that the ex didn't tell him he was with someone, but Paul did not know him so how can he know if that's the truth?

Paul does keep onto that "hatred" and is in denial for a long time, and it did start to get annoying when Indy gave him about 2 chances to tell him that he had feelings for him and that he was jealous of Indy possibly dating someone else, and Paul did not take it. It was frustrating, but then it made it oh so awesome when Paul had an epiphany and realized what an idiot he was being - with the help of his friend Dominic from the first book, unintentionally.

These two had good chemistry together, and I could see them falling in love with page after page, and I love where they end up. Even with Paul's asshole-ishness, most of the time Indy found it amusing, so then I found it amusing because Indy wasn't bothered - until near the end when Indy wasn't playing anymore and Paul was being an idiot.

There was a plot point given that I don't quite understand if it was necessary and it felt like an extreme reason to give for why Indy did what he did 3 years prior. And given that nothing truly came of it, I didn't see the point of it.

But overall this was a fun read, and I enjoyed it. The two MC's had great chemistry and I did like them both - even with Paul being a bit of a dick at times, and obstinate AF. This didn't feel like enemies-to-lovers though, because Indy never hated Paul or saw him as an enemy. It only works if they both hate each other ;)

So two thumbs up from me! Recommended! And I will be putting the first in this series on my list as well.

“Hate sex. God, I could hate-sex him so good. I could hate-sex him against the wall. In the shower. On the floor. I could hate-sex him so hard he’d be feeling the depth of my hate for him for the next week.”

This is such a cute enemies-to-lovers romance. It’s funny, hot, sweet, and sexy. It makes falling on the dick of the guy your ex cheated on you with seem like a really good idea—and that is the mark of a good book my friends!

— enemies-to-lovers
— mailroom guy/bartender
— sweet, low angst
— hate sex
— British setting

Well, this was a funny and sweet treat after my very heavy recent read. I’ll start my review with the same quote as Nelly did, because it just is so good.

Hate sex. God, I could hate-sex him so good. … I could hate-sex him so hard he'd be feeling the depth of my hate for him for the next week.

Turns out Paul is pretty bad at the whole hate-sex thing. It was actually pretty cute. I really enjoyed reading Paul & Indy's story.

Paul: Sqrry. Just seen mcssages. Diid you get home ok? Didn#t mean to dich you. Sorry. Rquly soory. X X X X X
Perfect. I'd even managed it without any spelling mistakes.

**********
So why did I give it such a low rating then. Because there was so much unnecessary content that was not even remotely important for the story that I had to skim page after page. It annoyed me pretty hard. And I can not even understand why the author did it anyway.

See, there is another book in the series - A Temporary Situation - and the author said at the beginning that these stories occur at the same time so you can read both in the order you want to. And I was intent on reading the other one too.

That was until I discovered that the author was telling half of the other story in this book already - I assume to fill the pages. So now, there is absolutely no need to pick the other one up and on top of it I’m being annoyed. I would’ve been perfectly fine with a novella if there just wasn’t anything more to tell in this book.

I have to admit I don’t recall much about Paul from Dom and Tristan’s story so if you haven’t read it, this should stand alone just fine. There is some wonderful humor and wit in the authors writing and parts of the story are touching. The characters are fleshed out quite well and Paul and Indy’s relationship with their families is layered with enough pathos to add depth to the narrative. Sex scenes are shown and paced well. Dom and Tristan’s story runs mostly concurrent with this as well. That said...

I have a completely personal reaction to this book, for much the same reasons I disliked book one. I read this because I was hoping for a difference beyond Paul having a better reason for disliking Indy than Dom did with Tristan. I generally like enemies to lovers but not what I see as grudges carried to the point of ridiculousness. I ended up disliking Paul a lot and his turnaround less than convincing because it was too sudden after his cruelty to Indy, making my view of Indy ambivalent for excusing it too easily. It’s a judgment call and other readers won’t see it in that way. I did waffle on the rating because there are funny moments that would typically put this well above average but the trope handling just grated on my nerves too much. I think I’ll pass on a third volume for this series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

With laugh out loud humor, an incredibly quirky, but endearing side cast of characters, and a smoking hot bad boy, H.L. Day sends down an incredibly entertaining new novel with Temporary Insanity. While this book is part of the existing Temporary series, it apparently runs concurrently with the other stories and can really be read as a standalone. I have not read any others in this group and had no problem following the story line. (Believe me when I tell you I will be purchasing both the other books—I am hooked!)

Even though Paul holds onto his anger for as long as he can, Indy is a master at wearing him down. Employing a teasing tone while continually pushing against Paul’s admittedly weak defenses, Indy proves again and again that he is the man for his grumpy, snarly enemy with benefits. From the gifting of a pink elephant to persistent come-ons, Indy is a hard one to resist and Paul doesn’t really stand a chance, especially not when workmates Russell (the hilariously chaste virgin) and Gabrielle (think gum-snapping, no boundaries gal pal) are intent on getting Paul laid. Honestly, this ensemble cast was just marvelous together. With delightfully humorous dialogue and insanely awkward situations galore, this novel was outstanding.

I struggled at times with Paul, thought that Indy was crazy for obviously caring. They did have good chemistry and were suited and this author makes me like characters and situations that I sometimes balk at with other authors. Sexy, funny, really easy to read and enjoyable. You can read Temporary Insanity as a standalone, although it runs the same or similar timeline as the MCs from the first book - which I haven't read.

Temporary Insanity takes place at the same time as book one of the series only it revolves around Dominic’s friend Paul. Indy, the new bartender at the place Paul frequents is making serious heart eyes at him. Paul’s throwing hate eyes back. (Are hate eyes a thing?) Three years ago, Paul walked in on his boyfriend with Indy and has not forgotten how he felt. If anything, time has only made him more angry. Even worse, Indy doesn’t even remember who Paul is! When Paul refreshes Indy’s memory, he has no time for his apologies or explanations. The problem? Indy is seriously hot. The solution? Obviously some good old fashioned hate sex. Nothing could possibly go wrong with this right? 😉

I liked this one at least as much as book one. It’s hard to top Tristan but Indy was equally dreamy in different ways. This is such a fun series. Lots of crackling banter, tons of steam and a pink elephant that will make you swoon. I can’t wait for Russell’s book.

This is great entertainment, first and foremost, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I do love the enemies-to-lovers trope, and even if there’s way less (if any) animosity on Indy’s side than on Paul’s, there were sufficient sparks to keep me happy. While I get Paul’s initial prickly behaviour, I’m not sure why he keeps it going for so long when a simple conversation could have sorted the awkward situation.

However, ultimately, this didn’t matter, as it made a great scenario and a good read.

What could be more awkward than accidentally running into the guy who cheated with your boyfriend and ruined your relationship? How about if said guy has no idea who you are? I was cringing for Paul when he walked up to the bar and realized why the guy looked familiar. Except, of course, the last time he saw the man he was riding Paul’s ex-boyfriend. Awkward.

Paul waits for “…guilt, followed by a string of abject apologies.” Except Indy likes the look of Paul and flirts but doesn’t remember him, other than a “You know, it’s weird, sometimes I think you look slightly familiar. Have we met before?” I could sympathize with Paul – it was a life-changing event and Indy doesn’t even remember. “Just over three years ago, I came home to find you in bed with my boyfriend. His name is Stephen, in case it happens to you a lot and you can’t remember which one it was. So that’s probably why I seem so familiar.” While Indy gives a “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry”, I was super irritated that he was pretty blasé about it. “…three years is a long time. Can’t we put it behind us and move on?”

I very nearly gave this book three stars because I couldn’t figure out why Indy kept pursuing Paul in the wake of their past and Paul’s rudeness to him. Glutton for punishment? “Because you don’t like me and you can’t forgive me for making a stupid mistake years ago.” I had to step back, though, and consider that Indy was not the guilty party in that affair. The ex was.

With the advice of Paul’s new friend, Gabrielle, he goes on a hunt for hate sex with Indy. Which, I should say, he’s really bad at. Especially since there are times when he does wonder if Indy and Stephen did the things he and Indy were doing. “So how did I compare to my ex?” Indy isn’t having it though, “Can’t we forget about it: Or at least find some way to move past it? We’re good together.”

We get a lot of denial on Paul’s part. It is sex only, no feelings, he doesn’t like Indy, his tattoos, his attitude, nothing. Umm, hmmm. “I didn’t want to see him that way though. That was the path to madness, to feelings I couldn’t entertain.”

There is a secondary plot woven here regarding Paul’s friend, Dom, and the boss of the company, Tristan. They have a book, completely focusing on them, Temporary Situation which I haven’t read. I don’t think you need to in order to enjoy this book, as it appears both stories are happening at the same time. I will now go back and read Temporary Situation.

It was entertaining to me how he was giving advice to Dom and considering him stubborn for his treatment of Tristan and he was so blind to his own situation. Indy gives so many opportunities for Paul to admit they have more than sex but he is twice as stubborn as Dom. Even when Indy gives up, he gives Paul a chance to make it right. Paul, of course, flubs it entirely and makes everything so much worse.

The side characters, Gabrielle, Paul’s virgin friend Russell, Dom, Tristan and Paul’s family play important roles here and are fully fleshed out characters. Paul’s issues with his family seem real and so frustrating. Being forced to attend lavish parties, attending holidays where he really isn’t wanted and doesn’t want to be there, having the whole family not listen or understand what he wants. It added to the story and to understanding Paul. Getting to know more about Indy’s past added depth to his character. And the elephants? Just made everything better.

The book sets up the next one in the series, obviously going to focus on Russell, shy, virginal Russell. “You’re never going to believe what he’s been up to and who with.” Teaser successful, because I want to know what he’s been up to and who with! I thoroughly enjoyed the humor in this book and the writing really worked for me.

Edit (08/31/2019): Having just re-read A Temporary Situation, I'm of the opinion that if you intend to read both, regardless of the declaimer that you can read them in any order, you should read A Temporary Situation first. Paul makes a few appearances in A Temporary Situation, all of which are included in Temporary Insanity. Indy is only referred to as the bartender and never by name. Other than Paul showing a reluctance to go to their normal bar, the barman flirting with him and Paul telling Dom that said barman is the same man he caught with his ex, there is no further mention of them... which makes sense, as Dom has no awareness of Paul and Indy being in a relationship until after the events of A Temporary Situation. However, there are a few key events surrounding Dom & Tristan in A Temporary Situation that are referenced: . You won't by any means be lost by reading this without reading A Temporary Situation (other than knowing who John Stone is, as he is only mentioned once in Temporary Insanity). But, you will definitely know about a few key moments in Dom's and Tristan's story that will kill any surprise factor. Also, I think Paul's few appearances in A Temporary Situation show just as much, if not more, character than what is shown in Temporary Insanity.

2 stars, 2.5 if I'm being particularly generous.

It's been more than a year since I read A Temporary Situation, so I can't say that I recall Paul or Indy. I don't even know if Indy was mentioned in it, to be honest.

Now, this book has the following disclaimer:

Please note: Although this book is in the Temporary series, it occurs during the same timeline as A Temporary Situation. Therefore, both books can be read as standalones and in any order.

Though I admit to not remembering a lot of the finer details of A Temporary Situation, there are more than a few references to events in Dom & Tristan's relationship that are mentioned in this book that could be slightly spoiler-y if you haven't read it first. I do think that I may re-read A Temporary Situation to see how much of Paul & Indy are in it, but my personal opinion would be that if you intend to read both books, read the first one first. If you only want to read this one, you'll manage just fine.

As to the story itself, I can't say I was crazy over it. And I think what it comes down to is a) I don't feel like you get a great since of who Indy is, since Paul spends the first half of the book pretending he has no interest in Indy and b) I don't think the chemistry between these two comes off the pages like I felt it did with the first book. And if I had to add a third thing, it would be Paul being so stubborn as to admit he has feelings... if he was in his early 20s as opposed to his late 20s, it may not have been so annoying, but come on.

Paul and Indy are two extremely adorable guys. Flawed af especially Paul. He is boyish, stubborn, honest and in denial. But what goes on in his head is just... I wanted to squeeze him, hard! Indy is wonderful, insistent, funny, clear as water and insanely persistent.

Hit on by the beautiful bartender, Paul growls at him, he hates this man.
He broke up with his partner three years ago, after finding him in bed with... yeah this man.
Indy doesn’t know about this and doesn’t stop trying to hit on Paul.

Paul doesn’t want to know anything about Indy, he just wants hate sex.
And that’s exactly what’s happens. Delicious hate sex. Afterward gone and heading home.
They both know this is just about getting off. Until it’s getting complicated when Indy likes to get a step further with him. No, no, nope! that’s not what Paul wants! No strings! Ughh!

My goodness, I loved this story, it was so well balanced, humorous, explosive, steamy, endearing and with all the right emotions. All the bossy attitude, from both sides, was just extremely enjoyable, Two most delicious, quite vanilla kind of men. Both extremely funny in a smart way, strong-headed and immensely engaging. The whole story was just my kind of thing, written in a captivating way, fast-paced, well-formed sentences and extremely enchanting.

Highly recommended

Ps.
I skipped through the Dominic and Tristan parts as much as possible, because I bought the story about them immediately when I’d understand there was a story!! And I didn’t want to read any possible spoilers, I’ll read those parts later. I can’t wait to start that one!

To trzeba to spróbować mu wyjaśnić i ruszyć dalej.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Paul is a bachelor, aided by the infidelity of his cheating ex, when Indy spots him at the local pub. The guy is dead set on getting in Paul's pants. There's only one problem, Indy is the guy Paul caught sleeping with his ex, and he doesn't seem to remember Paul, at all.

The sarcasm and banter are fun. I'd say this definitely fits in the category of enemies to lovers. There are some jumpy bits. It's weird how dead set Indy is on getting with Paul initially, despite Paul being totally standoffish. His moods are mercurial. It's explained a bit by his backstory, but the transitions -- his  initial interest and later disappearing act -- could use just a touch more filler to ease the transition from interested party, to breaking things off, to relationship, well, you get the picture.

But, like most H.L. Day books, I was immediately hooked by the banter and the intensity of the characters. I enjoy the realism. Bad things happen to good people. Good people make poor decisions. The main characters are flawed and real. Indy is such a sweetheart, you just want Paul to get it together so they can have their hea, asap.

I also blame the author for the fact that I'm looking for a pink elephant plushie on Amazon.

I haven’t read the first book in this series but seeing as they occur in the same timeline you’re given just enough backstory for it to be a standalone, and not be an annoying recap of the entire first book, which is a big plus.

I liked the setup. I liked Paul dealing with his confusion, hate and attraction. I liked Indy’s persistence. I liked the insanely cute drunken “hate-sex” that was full of some terrific banter. It kind of lost me around the middle where Paul is a bit of a tool but he made up for it in the last third. This was fun but didn’t go too deep. It’s the kind of thing you need after a heavy read but isn’t too angsty.

I loved the writing in this fun, witty and all round entertaining story of Paul and Indy.
Paul had an instant dislike of sexy Indy after a quick and awkward meeting 3yrs prior.
India's constant flirting with Paul gets on his nerves.
A slow burn sort of enemies to lovers. I was kept fully engaged in the story the whole way through.
This was my first book by this author. I just one clicked Dominic and Tristans book.
Happily recommend.

I can personally say whenever I want a Rom-com to grace my day off, I can turn to author H.L. Day for that. Given how much I enjoyed her Temporary series thus far, I am glad I got my greedy hands on this book.

I was not expecting to get this book so soon, but boy am I glad to have it. It was good catching up with Dom and Tristan and reliving their relationship as it played out simultaneously as that of Paul's and Indy's.

Told in Paul's point of view, the readers got to experience his emotions, his thoughts and his crazy friends [Russell, whose book I am now dying to read and the incorrigible no-filtered Gabby who was a world of information and knowing how to solve problem] and the family that just couldn't understand him.

For Paul, Indy was the man who'd cheated with his ex. So it reasons to stand that he had a place of animosity in his heart for the man who had ruined his relationship. So imagine his surprise when the green eyed Indy continuously flirted with him as if nothing was amiss. When Paul should have been running like the devil was after him, he found himself entangled with Indy time and again, even after all is revealed. Were these two meant to be? Or was the past going to be the one thing to make them plead temporary insanity?

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author through LesCourt.

This was so cute!!! I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Both main characters are fun and have great personalities (although Paul has a very mean streak & a bit too bitchy and if I squint I can kind of see why his ex did what he did). They make sense together. I didn’t really understand the importance of the supporting characters. I feel like the author wanted them to be more important than they actually are. They’re supposedly good friends of Paul, the main character, but the relationships didn’t translate for me. Also characters descriptions need work in this book. I don’t really know what anyone looks like except Indy has green eyes, piercings and tattoos. Cause that’s repeated over and over And over again. Regardless, cute book. Glad I picked this up

I don't know if this situation happened to me I could be as forgiven as Paul. But seemed like Paul's was okay with it.
The stubbornness I can understand, it was denial. Though at some point, Paul was testing my patience with his denial.
As much as I wanted to love this story, this was just an okay read for me.

***Possible Spoilers***
I enjoyed Temporary Insanity. It is a great addition to the Temporary Series and follows along the same lines in that it is hilarious and touching.
Paul and Indy have a past that keeps them at odds for much of the story. Except when they are having hate sex, that is. I didn’t realize that hate sex was a thing or that it could be so hot. That’s some spicy stuff. Mmmmmm.
Indy is a beautiful character. He is open, honest, cheerful, stronger than he knows, and sure of his place in the world. He refuses to give up on Paul until he has made every effort to win him over.
Paul is an interesting character. He is laid back and comfortable with his outlook on life. He doesn't put much effort into his professional life, and his personal life isn't something he is stressing over either; until Indy. Paul is torn about his feelings for Indy but refuses to entertain the notion of a romantic relationship with him. It is hate sex all the way.
The snark and banter between these two and with all the other characters kept me laughing. It eased some of the pain of the more serious scenes they struggled thru.
I was so glad when Paul finally woke the -F- up and realized that even as they were hate sexing all over the place, they were also getting to know each other and falling in love. I wanted to pinch him several times. Ugh. But now, I am confident and satisfied with their HEA.
There is a nice flow to the book, and the premise is sound. It is well thought out and executed, and the characters are well fleshed out. Everyone involved in the book has a part to play, and they enrich the story happening around them.
It was nice seeing Tristan and Dom again. They are characters that I will never tire of.
The rest of the secondary characters are well placed, entertaining, funny, and supportive of the storyline. Paul’s interactions with them were hilarious and made me want to see more of them.

3.5 stars. I didn't read the first book in the series but don't feel as if I missed anything. One of my biggest issue with the book is that Paul treats Indy like crap and Indy keeps coming back for more. Indy was the guy that Paul found in bed with his ex. Even though Indy had no idea that the ex had a boyfriend, Paul takes out his anger and nastiness on Indy. My second issue is the sudden change in Paul, one minute he is hating Indy & then the next he wants Indy and Indy is like, okay. I didn't like what basically amounted to verbal abuse being just pushed aside. There were moments that cracked me up and once they are past the "hate" & you forget the abuse, it was a cute sweet read.

This is book 2 in the series, but the books happen concurrently, so you could read either first. I do think this one would spoil the first one for me, but not too much. Luckily I had already read the first one and reallly enjoyed it.

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, and this book pulled it off well. They didn’t instantly become ok once they started sleeping together, which is a personal peeve of mine, there was still plenty of animosity keeping the tension high.

I like a good anti-hero, but Paul was more jerk than I really care for, so it put me off some. But at least Indy wasn’t a doormat and didn’t let him get away with it. I do love that while they grow in the relationship, neither of them changes, and they love each other just the way they are. Not a huge fan of the conflict at the end, just not my thing, but it worked ok.

I loved getting to see Dom and Tristan’s relationship from the outside, it was cool to see a different perspective. Russell didn’t work for me, I’m not crazy about gossipy ppl, but since he might be the next book, hopefully I can learn to like him.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy.

Paul goes to a bar and sees the guy he found his ex cheating on him with. There is instant hatred on Paul's part. Unfortunately Indy doesn't feel the same way, because he is flirting like crazy with Paul. How these 2 got together at all was a little surprising considering how much Paul wanted to hate Indy and how much he tried to sabotage their potential relationship. I wondered at times what it was that made Indy really want Paul and keep coming back. Once Paul started to finally get his head out of the clouds, it was nice to see them connect. While this could be a standalone book, I found that I enjoyed already knowing about Dylan and Tristan as I read this. It referenced incidents that happened in their book, and I liked revisiting them.

I've waited so long for Paul's story...We got a good insight to him in Tristan and Dom's book....Indy was just perfect for him and I loved him from the start....I really thought they were good together like Indy said.....There's a certain part in this concerning Tristan..I'll not say what happens but I swear if you don't smile and laugh at what he does then you need to re-read his book..I love Tristan and this is so something he would do...Paul and Indy (love that name) are just adorable together....I'm hoping for a certain young virgins book next and will patiently and hopefully wait x
