…An enemy in retreat …A new world to protect …A new potential ally on the horizon …A new chance to go on the offensive
The Dusahn have taken a massive blow, and with the Aurora’s improved jump range, Captain Scott and the Karuzari Alliance can finally keep them at arms length.
Now, a previously unknown world may hold the key to defeating the Dusahn, and possibly even to bring peace to the entire galaxy.
The question is…Can they be trusted?
"A Price Too High" is the 12th episode in Part 2 of the Frontiers Saga: Rogue Castes. Episode 13 is coming soon!
Born in 1960 and raised on an overdose of television, NASA, and science fiction, Ryk Brown has worked as a cook, rock guitarist, stage lighting technician, and paramedic. He currently resides in Northern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. By day he fixes computers, and by night he creates stories. Having spent his entire life "thinking stuff up", the advent of digital publishing has finally given him an excuse to write it all down and share it with others. ("Others" meaning someone other than his poor wife and daughter.) A long-time fan of all things science and space, his goal is to write and publish an on-going series of sci-fi adventures. To be set in his own version of humanity's future, his characters will explore the vast reaches of the galaxy, and perhaps even the universe. He invites you all to join him on this journey through his vivid imagination.
I am amazed that Mr. Brown is able to keep coming up with exciting new episodes of his Frontier Series. This is episode twenty-five in total and number twelve in the second section. I have enjoyed the series. I started reading the series because Mr. Brown was a local author here in the Monterey Bay Area. He has since moved away. Years ago, my mother encouraged me read local authors whenever possible. I have discovered some exciting reads following that advice.
The book is well written. The plot twists and turns. The characters are interesting. The author adds some new characters in each episode and sometimes eliminates other. As usual, Mr. Brown writes excellent space battle scenes. I enjoy the regular characters and feel like they are now friends I visit periodically. I found the ending a bit of a surprise. I am looking forward to the next installment.
I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is eight hours and nine minutes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book. I am happy that Kafer has narrated all the books in the series. I hate it when a series has a variety of narrators. I also enjoy listening to Kafer’s voice. Kafer is a voice-over actor and has narrated many audiobooks.
Abit like the title, the price is too high for a book which has an awful lot of padding, when entire pages are just speech without any real description of what is going on. I used to love this series and looked forward to each release but no longer. I had hoped the writing would evolve as most writers do but i have found in this case its more like devolve. The potential is still there, the characters are still there but seem to have gone very wooden and don't seem to come out of a set pattern. Come on Ryk rather than getting a book out every 3 months make it a year but have more descriptions going on, cut down the speech and let the character grow again.
When the author killed Nathan at the end of the 1st series I had my doubts about that decisions. When he brought back him as a clone I laughed so hard. But the 1st series was good, and overall, the 2nd was also ok. Then in the previous book, the option came up, to solve an intergalactic war with a hand-to-hand duel. I was like, "wow, a new low compared to the death/clone thing". It didn't happen (yet). And now, with the "twist" in the last 20% of this book... And with a very bad quality of writing at the same time. Maybe it isn't a good idea to stretch a series into 30 books?
More miss than hit. The story line has started to go stale, this book broke no new ground and the ending was telegraphed long in advance. Its a real shame but in comparison to earlier works this is a lame duck.
This episode of Frontiers Saga probably deserves 5 stars. I'm not giving it five stars though, because it SPOILERED me into thinking that SPOILER was SPOILERING, and that's just now something you should do to your readers without some foreshadowing.
It's a really good book, though. The various story arcs are extended and some new ones are added. The characters are true to form throughout. The action is evenly mixed with intrigue to give it an exciting pace that kept me wanting to read just a little more.
The only negative is the surprise that isn't a surprise. I can't say any more than that without spoiling the whole book, and I want people to read my reviews and find them useful, not hate me. So, this one will be shorter than most. All I can say is that if you've been reading the series, keep reading. It's been terrific so far, and I believe it will continue to be so.
I give this one 4 stars and call it a Just For That You Don't Get Five Stars Read! Happy Reading!
Ryk Brown is a prolific writer, and I've been following his work for about the past decade. Every time he releases a novel, I ponder how long I should delay before cracking it. Captain Nathan Scott has a universe to preserve and a species to prolong, despite the fact that mankind finds all sorts of new ways to try and destroy all that it has become. In "A Price Too High," the 12th in the second Frontiers Saga, Scott's Karuzari alliance finally gets a bit of a break. Of course, Brown never makes it easy. The threat remains, and it's likely to grow. But Scott has recruited a potential ally that may pay big dividends. This being a Brown novel, the stakes are high and the expectations of this ally even higher. Scott finds he must pass a test, one he knows he has no chance of attaining. He's the man, though. He can do it. And Brown has that way of building up to the climax that always satisfies. He's also the man. I love his books.
What an excellent book, great writing. This book was full of twists and turns, it pulled on your heartstrings, it made you laugh cry and cheer. There are so many twists and turns in this book there are things you won’t see coming. If you have not read this book I urge you to do so, if you haven’t read the series I urge you to start from the beginning at episode one you will not be disappointed. Just think of it this way you will not have to wait months for the next book. And you also have this book to look forward to which was excellent if those reading the series have not read this yet do so.
I don't usually give reviews,if I like a series i buy every one as they come out, this series has been fantastic, characters have come and gone, Nathan and his crew are interesting and their character development has been steady and believable , we've followed them all with their own issues and challenges, the variety and depth of the fight sequences and 'bad guy's have been enough that this series rates as one of my all time favourites, long may it continue, cheers to Na-Tan
This episodes of this saga was on par with previous ones. But I gave it only a level 3 because after more than 25 episodes I have tired for the story, the jumping, the many characters and the constant space battles. This episode seemed to have more gore and mayhem than many of the previous ones. I did find the illusion played on Nathen and Jessica at the end of the book interesting. I thought at first that the saga was coming to an end. So the saga continues but I think I will move on to something else.
This book was one of the best of the series. I only hope Dylan becomes a more permanent part of the future story. Great story, awesome battle scenes, made me finish the whole book in record time. Can't wait to see what future tech sprouts from the new planet. Thank you Mr Brown for such a great series that NEVER fails to entertain! Highly recommend this and all Mr Browns works.
I Love these books thank you, I am a cancer patient wth is was a life saver for me, when is the next one coming out,
Like the Sims and the people, Val was a mass he was a lot of fun, and cam. With her rules, mash an like we're the best when it came to flying, the mash family are the type that everyone wants to have with them always helping an not a fuss from them at all, I do thank that Jess an Nathan should have gotten. Together more. Again thank you.
There are a few literary techniques, or method of story teller that I really dislike. I won't tell you which ones because they are very present in this book. Yet... Ryk Brown managed to used it without annoying me too much. Only a little bit. The way he used it was quite effective and I'm surprised by that.
I hope he doesn't use them again, because that will completely destroy my interest in the series.
I almost want to punch you in the chin right now, Ryk. But I have to admit you were brilliant at taking me along this particular journey. You keep delivering these stories and I'll keep gobbling them up in less than a day. I would rank this as one of your best in this particular series. Bravo, sir. I salute you.
In reality this was confirmation that our ‘hero’ really IS the ‘man’ we have come to believe in. This was a unique experience in presenting it the way the author chose and while its unique style makes it a great read it does have the effect of making the story go on longer than necessary.
I thought this one was one of the better books from part 2. It just seemed to move along at a better pace. I was slightly disappointed with the way the twist unfolded. I felt it cheapened the writing somewhat and made me feel like I wasted a lot of time reading through the rest of the story. I was also sad there wasn't anything about the Sol sector.
I have lots of books to read but I pass them all up for another by Ryk. I can't put them down. I am reluctant to start the " Return " since that seems to be the last available to me and, once done, I anticipate a severe withdrawal.
I have been reading sci-fi for 60 years and have never been so enthralled.
Much occurs in this exciting and nail biting episode. Battles to try and save the Rogen system and Orswella. But the title of this book carries great meaning. Pain and loss is throughout this book in varying degrees. All of this leads to the tragic final pages of this book. Exceptional is the only way to describe this book.
Did I see that coming? Maybe. Did I guess we'd see something like this 2 books ago? Yeah. Did I shout with joy every time they talked about it? Yes, yes I did and if you're the lady that rolled her eyes and honked at me to go at the green light, I'm sorry-not-sorry 😂
Also cried twice. Screw you Ryk for making me care so much about these friendships! 😍😂
As Nathan seeks to weaken the Dusahn, protect the Alliance, and gain new allies, he hears of SilTek, a country/Corporation with amazing abilities in artificial intelligence. Using their AI, the Aurora takes on four battleships and defeats them. But how do you make an alliance with an entity only interested in profit? If Nathan can’t figure it out, no one can!
One after the another the episodes keeps on improving. The emoTional element was way too high, excellent handling of the situation. One of the books where you are enjoying the book with each para, where you can smell and feel being part of the storyline. 💯
Ryk, I had all but decided to give up on this series because your writing seemed to have lost direction. Yes you do write a great fight scene but where are the characters that we as your loyal readers have become attached to? Introducing new characters is great but not if they have no personality! You write stories and leave so many threads dangling... This last episode was interesting but totally detached from the core of your series story. Your complaints regarding Amazon and Amazon Unlimited are understandable, however, you need to remember that you got your start as a fledgling writer on platforms such as this. I discovered your books on Amazon! I have nearly 3000 purchased books in my library, and yes, I have purchased your books. Yes, I am also an Unlimited reader. If I test a book on unlimited and like it enough to purchase it, I do. One point you have overlooked is that each time an Unlimited reader chooses to re-read your books, it is considered as another purchase and you receive credit for that down load. If I purchase your book I can read it 100 times for the same purchased price. Your series books inspire us as fans to always go back and re-read prior episodes to refresh our memories. Eliminating that source of revenue may not be the Rosy future you dream of. Also, I am a discriminating reader. I refuse to purchase what I consider "short" books. Almost ANY book under 250 pages falls into that category. If you plan to sell books with out an umbrella, you need to actually sell a book! I calculated the average pages of each episode in Part 1 and compared it to the average pages of each episode so far in Part 2 and found that in Part 2 not only is the quality of the story declining, the average number of pages are also declining by as much as 75 pages per book. You want to make more money but you are willing to sacrifice your product to do so? I have been loyal, I am attached to the main characters of this series but I need a real book, with real people and a real storyline achieving a real goal and making progress towards a specific direction. Can you do that? If not, I may not be one of the fans that will follow you forward into a disjointed, confused future in Part 3 where you hope we will buy your books and we hope you will be able to churn out at least 200 pages of nonsensical fight scenes. You need to get back to the quality and quantity of product you produced in Part 1, even if it takes you longer between series because otherwise you will loss readers.

The continuing saga, what a ride! Potential new allies, ongoing struggles with the Dushan. Nathan goes through a rollercoaster of emotions, loss and problems to forge new alliances.
When you are mentally losing something your pain is real and the emotional pain is great. This book posits the what if this happened, how would you really react?
Liked how the author got through the story without not saying too much and giving us a place of imagination. Sometimes I would want to have a bit more story. So many unexpected turns and the end - always getting better from book to book.
As usual, Ryk serves up another winner. I’ve been along for the ride since the beginning and also as usual, I can’t wait for the next episode! Please don’t burn out Ryk! Take a vacation or two, chill out , recharge, and come back soon! Thanks!
I just finished this book and for the first time in a long while I got happy, mad, sad, and many more emotions while reading this book. I could not put it down.
